Cadillac Sts problems
The Cadillac STS (Seville Touring Sedan) is a mid-sized luxury 4-door sedan manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 2004 to 2011 for the 2005 to 2011 model years. A version of the STS was marketed in China as the SLS through 2013.
It was equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission with performance algorithm shifting and driver shift control.
Origins
The STS was the successor to the Cadillac Seville, which beginning in 1987 was available as an upscale performance-oriented STS (for Seville Touring Sedan) version.
While smaller than the full-size DTS, the more expensive STS was the flagship sedan of the Cadillac brand.

Common Cadillac Sts problems
The Cadillac STS, a luxury sedan produced from 2005 to 2011, has several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequent issues and their details:
- Camshaft Actuator Solenoid Valve Failure: This problem can cause a check engine light and drivability issues due to improper timing of the cams. The camshaft actuator solenoid valves control the flow of oil pressure to the VVT actuators. To prevent this issue, maintain the oil at the proper level and change the oil regularly.
- MAP Sensor Failure: The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor measures the pressure inside the intake. A faulty MAP sensor can cause drivability issues and a check engine light with a MAP sensor code. To fix this issue, locate the MAP sensor, disconnect the electric connector, remove the bolt, and replace the sensor.
- Passenger Presence Sensor Failure: This problem can cause the air bag light to be on with a code for the passenger presence system. The passenger presence sensor is located in the passenger seat and senses if there is a passenger on the seat for the air bag system. To fix this issue, replace the sensor.
- Steering Wheel Position Sensor Failure: This problem can cause the service stability light to be on on the dash and the ABS light to be on. The steering wheel position sensor is located at the base of the steering column and senses the steering wheel's position. To fix this issue, replace the steering wheel position sensor by following specific steps, including disabling the air bag system, removing the lower dash panels, removing the intermediate shaft, and sliding the sensor out.
These are some of the most common problems reported by Cadillac STS owners. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent some of these issues.

- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-25
- Date Complaint: 2021-12-13
- VIN: 1G6DK67V180
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The Cadillac Company sent me a letter several years ago informing me of a premature timing chain wear and the illumination of the Service Engine light. They knew about this defective engine problem but they did not recall the vehicle. Instead they extended the engine warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles. I have only 90,000 miles on my vehicle but I've owned it for over 10 years and now the check engine light is illuminated. The Cadillac dealer refuses to extend the warranty. This is a safety issue because if the engine were to fail the driver would also lose power steering and power brakes putting the safety of the vehicle occupants and others at risk. I believe that this vehicle and other GM vehicles with the 3.6 liter engine should be recalled and repaired at no cost to the vehicle owner.

I bought this car new in June 2006 for my wife and two middle school boys. Although the boys have grown and gone, the car is still in excellent condition with 108,000 miles and counting. Despite lots of short cold winter starts, which can really wear on an engine, we have had no problems. We used synthetic oil and changed it only every 10,000 miles. The ash tray covers (front and back) both broke off, and the bushings in the front suspension have moved out of place, so we do get some clunking noises over bumps. Both headlamps burned out within months of each other and were costly to replace because the whole front end had to come off. We are now on our third set of tires, but otherwise, we have had no issues. If you are looking at buying a used car, I would highly recommend this one. I hope to keep it for another 100,000 miles. Thank you, GM!

Congratulations on your new Diamond White Platinum Series STS! It sounds like an outstanding car with exceedingly comfortable seating, quick response, and superb sound system. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the outstanding fuel economy of 21 city and 25+ highway at 80MPH. Although the navigation system may be overly complicated and the voice recognition software problematic, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon. The strikingly stunning styling of the car is sure to turn heads and the outstanding road handling makes for a safe and enjoyable driving experience. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I have owned this car for 3 years and it has been great owning it. The car is vastly improved over the Eldorado I owned previously. The engine is strong and can redline with ease. The transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, making passing on the highway effortless. The suspension is smooth in touring mode and nice and firm in sport mode, without being harsh. The car is extremely comfortable and anyone can find a nice position to drive comfortably. It's a luxury car that offers great performance and value. All I have needed to do is replace the rear shocks outside of regular maintenance. Not a bad deal. All the electronics and power options work fine after 10 years. The interior and exterior have held up wonderfully, with no rattles, squeaks or noises. I am extremely happy with the STS V8 AWD. I recommend staying away from the V6 and going with either V8 STS. It truly is a driver's car that you can put the family in without giving up anything. When you're alone, you can drive it like a Corvette and when you're with the family, you can drive it like a Cadillac with all the comfort, great ride, and quality that comes with it. BMWs, Lexus and Mercedes of this age are nowhere near holding up like the Cadillac, especially in terms of the price to fix all the problems those cars have when they get to this age. Don't forget the price to fix them either! Cadillac prices for parts are much cheaper to replace than all those cars. I drove a S class Mercedes that was two years newer than my car and it felt like it was going to fall apart, total junk! My Cadillac drives like a two year old car, not a ten year old car. American cars get a bad rap, but I'll take a Cadillac over all those cars I mentioned any day. Maybe I got lucky and found a good one, but I don't think so. I think it is a well-built and engineered car.

My STS4 is called THE BLACK PANTHER because she is black (of course) and she gives the driver the feeling that she just wants to let loose and run fast and sleek. Her impression is very aggressive and she is. She has the 2nd generation NorthStar engine and it's mated with a fantastic 5-speed with overdrive transmission with instant response. She is also all-wheel drive. I love the comfort and luxury inside, making her not only powerful but also elegant and head-turning. She's a sport sedan built to compete with her European counterparts and beats all of them off the line in 0 to 60. Punch it and you'll feel an instant response and be pushed back into your seat at a force of .83 g's. I can also change the suspension between touring and performance mode. She's extremely dependable and fun to drive, making her perfect for car shows. I own a 95 Cadillac ETC with the 1st generation NorthStar engine, and I love it so much that when I retired her to show only, I wanted another Cadillac and definitely with a NorthStar engine. I found it in my STS4. I was lucky enough to find the rare STS4 with not only the NorthStar but with the 1SG package. There were only 1,000 built. It's a suspension, brake, and performance package. I've got the premiere wheels which I discovered is also rare. This is a car I will also not let go except when she's old enough to become another show only car. My car is all-wheel drive as the 4 in STS4 denotes. The longer I have her, the more I like her, and the more compliments I get from others. My only complaint is that she should have a 24-gallon tank as opposed to the 16-gallon.

This car is really impressive! It's like driving your living room down the road, but with high performance. It's so quiet and comfortable, and I've never owned a more reliable car.

I've owned two Cadillac STS's so far. The first was a 2005 with the V8, and the one I have now is a 2008. They're great cars overall, but I recommend staying away from the V8 Northstar engines. Unfortunately, at around 87,000 miles and up, the V8 Northstar starts experiencing problems. The issue with this engine is that the cylinder head mounting studs start to loosen due to corrosion and the material or metal used for the head studs that clamp them down. This leads to head gasket failure and even engine damage. While you can get the head gaskets fixed, the problem will come back after 30,000 miles or so, ultimately leaving you with a recurring and expensive problem. However, the V6 with 306hp is a nice luxury/performance car overall. On my 2005 car, the transmission started to give up on me. I think the 5-speed can barely handle the V8 power, whereas the 07 and up have 6 speeds that are more adequate.

I chose the STS because it met all our requirements when we were shopping for a used car: luxury, comfort, and affordability. Although the resale value is not great, we were able to get a better car for our money on the used car market. Overall, I really like the design of the STS, both inside and out. While some people prefer the CTS in terms of design, I personally prefer the more subtle look of the STS. Although I am not usually a fan of extended warranties, I would recommend that anyone considering the STS should look for one that is still under the factory warranty, or in the case of a 2005 or 2006 model, a factory CPO warranty, as there can be some minor issues that arise. It's important to take reviews with a grain of salt. While the 'high-end' stereo is not the best and can easily be outdone by a decent aftermarket one, it's still a great car overall.

I have owned two Caddies, including a 2003 Seville SLS, which was a perfect car. However, I must say that the 2006 model did not meet my expectations. The car's performance is sluggish, and it remains in 5th gear most of the time. Despite this, GM claims that it is up to specs. The Bluetooth feature is unreliable and frequently does not recognize my phone, and the voice recognition feature does not recognize anyone. Additionally, the gas mileage is only about 15 mpg. If you are considering a '06 STS V6 AWD, I would advise you to test drive it extensively before making a purchase.

I recently traded in my 1998 Deville for a 2006 STS 3.6 with 86,000 miles. It was a great car for the first year of ownership. However, around 96,000 miles, I experienced a misfire and ended up replacing the spark plugs. I ordered the parts online and did it myself, which saved me a lot of money. I didn't really experience any other issues until 140,000 miles, when things started to go downhill. The transmission became clunky when shifting from reverse to drive or when coming to a stop and then accelerating again. The LED taillights failed one bulb at a time, but unfortunately, I had to replace the entire assembly. The keyless entry also failed, and the interior chrome door handles peeled and could cut you if the wind took the door out of your hand. Additionally, the gas mileage for a V6 is poor, and it's not great in the Michigan snow. However, the Bose stereo sounds great, and the handling was excellent. It looks a bit sleeker than the CTS. If you're considering this car, I would recommend getting the V8 and being prepared for some issues. Despite these problems, I made it to 167,000 miles before trading it in for a Lexus LS430.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with your 06 STS. It's unfortunate to hear that you're currently experiencing some engine problems. I can understand how frustrating that must be, especially after owning a reliable Volvo for so many years. It's always disappointing when a car doesn't live up to our expectations. I hope that the repairs won't be too costly and that you'll be back on the road soon. On the bright side, your STS is a good looking car! Although it may have some downsides like limited storage space and a small trunk, it's still a great car to drive. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us!
