Buick Riviera problems
The Buick Riviera is a personal luxury car that was marketed by Buick from 1963 to 1999, with the exception of the 1994 model year.
As General Motors' first entry into the personal luxury car market segment, the Riviera was highly praised by automotive journalists upon its high-profile debut. It was a ground-up design on a new GM E platform debuting for the 1963 model year and was also Buick's first unique Riviera model.
Unlike its subsequent GM E platform stablemates, the Oldsmobile Toronado and Cadillac Eldorado, the Riviera was initially a front engine/rear-wheel drive platform, switching to front-wheel drive starting with the 1979 model year.
While the early models stayed close to their original form, eight subsequent generations varied substantially in size and styling. A total of 1,127,261 Rivieras were produced.
The Riviera name was resurrected for two concept cars that were displayed at auto shows in 2007 and in 2013.

Buick Riviera 1998
- Date Of Incident: 2016-09-21
- Date Complaint: 2016-09-21
- VIN: 1G4GD2210W4
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: IT STARTED OUT AS A SMALL OIL LEAK, BUT I RECENTLY NOTICED THE LEAK HAS EXPANDED SIGNIFICANTLY. IT'S DIFFICULT TO PINPOINT THE LEAK, BUT AN OIL PAN UNDER THE CAR SHOWS SIGNIFICANT PUDDLING OF OIL. A SEALER/CONDITIONER DOESN'T APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED. WHILE ONLINE, I NOTED THAT THE 3800CC 3.8L ENGINE SEEMS NOTORIOUS FOR THIS PROBLEM, AND OTHER MODELS OF GM CARS APPEAR TO BE SUBJECT TO A RECALL. NOT SO THE BUICK, WHICH TO ME, HAS THE SAME ENGINE. GIVEN THAT IS IS KNOWN NOW, I'M CONCERNED THAT THIS LOW PRODUCTION VEHICLE WAS LEFT OUT OF THE RECALL AND SHOULD BE INCLUDED. PUDDLE OF OIL PHOTO ENCLOSED. THIS CONDITION IS MOST NOTICEABLE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY.
Buick Riviera 1998
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-11
- Date Complaint: 2016-09-21
- VIN: 1G4GD2210W4
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO, WHEN FUELING MY VEHICLE, I NOTICED A PUDDLE OF GASOLINE IN THE VICINITY OF THE LEFT REAR WHEEL, INLINE WITH THE FUEL FILLER DOOR. I HAD NOTED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SUBSEQUENTLY CAME ON AND CODE 0440 (OR A VARIANT OF THAT, I CANNOT RECALL WITH 100% CERTAINTY. WHEN I HAD SOME FREE TIME, I STARTED INVESTIGATING THE EMISSIONS CODE AND DECIDED TO CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WORKING FORWARD. WHILE LOOKING AT THE FUEL FILLER NECK, I NOTED A GLINT OF FRESH STEEL BEHIND THE TIRE. UPON REMOVING THE TIRE, I NOTED A HOLE IN THE FILLER NECK THE SIZE OF A US QUARTER. SINCE IT'S A FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENT, I INVESTIGATED WHETHER I COULD GET A REPLACEMENT PART (TO NO AVAIL). MY FIELD EXPEDIENT FIX WAS TO WRAP THE FUEL FILLER INTAKE STEEL PIPE WITH A COPIOUS AMOUNT OF DUCT TAPE AS A TEMPORARY FIX UNTIL I COULD SEE IF A JUNKYARD WOULD YIELD A NEW PIPE. NO SUCH LUCK IN FIND A PART THAT DIDN'T HAVE A HOLE OF SORTS (SEE ENCLOSED PHOTO'S OF 'REPLACEMENT' OFFERINGS. MY INVESTIGATION LED ME TO CONCLUDE THE WEAR IN THE PIPE WAS CAUSED BY WHEEL HOP, PRIMARILY WHEN ROLLING OVER SPEED BUMPS AT A SPEED HIGHER THAN RECOMMENDED, CAUSING THE REAR WHEEL TO "HOP UPWARDS" AND COME IN CONTACT WITH THE PIPE. GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF SPEED BUMPS IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD, THE LIKELIHOOD OF THIS HAPPENING IS CONSISTENT THE LOCATION OF THE DAMAGE AND THE INNER EDGE OF THE LEFT REAR WHEEL. I'VE ENCLOSED PICTURES OF A 'REPLACEMENT' PIPE THAT WILL HAVE TO BE EPOXIED TO CONTAIN VAPORS AND PREVENT FUEL SPILLAGE UNLESS A PRISTINE PIPE IS FOUND. GIVEN THE EMISSIONS ISSUE ALONG WITH FUEL SPILLAGE WHEN FUELING THE VEHICLE, THERE'S A HIGH LIKELYHOOD OF FURTHER DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARD. I'D RECOMMEND A METAL SHIELD BE RETROFITTED TO PREVENT CONTACT FROM THE LEFT TIRE AND THE FUEL FILLER NECK

- Summary: WELL FOR STARTERS THE CAR HAS 131,000 MILES ON IT AND CLEAN INTERIOR. BUT....THE DRIVERS SIDE POWER SEAT INCLINE DOESN'T WORK, THE BLEND BOX OR AN ACTUATOR IS BAD, THE CRUISE CONTROL DOESN'T WORK, AND THE AC COMPRESSOR IS LOCKED UP. BUT.... THE WORST PART IS THE OIL LEAK COMING FROM THE FRONT VALVE COVER. IT IS SPILLING OUT ON MY EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND SMOKES BADLY. I JUST READ GM HAS A RECALL ON ALL THE L67 3.8L SUPERCHARGED MOTORS IN GRAND PRIX AND REGALS AMONGST OTHER MODELS WITH THE 3.8L BUT NOT THE RIVIERAS. CAN THE RIV GET SOME LOVE TOO. I LIKE THE CAR BUT ALL THESE PROBLEMS AND A HIGHWAY SHUDDER AT 65-73.....👎👎😢😢👎👎👎😩😩😩😩😩

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like it's really easy to handle and gets great gas mileage. It's great that your wife loves it too, especially with the sloping hood that she finds appealing. It's always nice to have a car with a good history, and it's great to hear that you're so happy with it that you're even considering buying another one. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I just purchased my 2nd Riviera. It's a Florida car that I purchased from the original owners in their 90's. It's an immaculate 92 with 70,000 miles. I'm thrilled to be back in a Riveria. The unique styling, plenty of power and nice options make it a joy to drive! 😊

I have over 150000 miles on this car, and it still runs beautifully. I'm a traveling salesman, and the company wants to get me a new car, but I don't want one. I love this one too much. From the heated leather to the supercharged V6, this car has it all. My sunroof is always open, and the stereo system in this car is great. When I'm home, my 17-year-old boy loves to drive it. I'm going to keep this car until it costs me too much to get a new one!

The 1998 Riviera has been an excellent car in all categories, except for the unfortunate paint job. Despite this issue, I have been thoroughly impressed with the vehicle's performance, even after being in two minor accidents. With just regular maintenance and a replacement of the rack and pinion steering, the car has held up remarkably well. It's a shame that GMC did not stand behind the factory paint issue, but I remain confident in the overall quality of the car.

My Riv is like the most perfect mate who you just know is going to break your heart someday. Our rocky romance was immediate, but thank God for GM-Certified warranties! Fast forward 12 years and I'm still as much in love with her as back then. Even more so because for the past 10 years all she has required of me is feeding and the usual changing. I've grown to listen and know her like none beforehand. She might not be the most nimble and quickest of athletes on the asphalt, but she pampers me with an uncompromised ride, comfort, economy, and timeless styling. With 220K+, our days together are numbered and there goes my heart.

This car has great pick up and is perfect for freeway driving, although it may have a little trouble with handling. The exterior design is decent, but it is a bit too long.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it almost 2 years ago and I was so excited about it! Before buying it, I had it checked out by a mechanic who said it was a great purchase. However, over the past two years, I've had to replace many expensive parts and the fuel mileage isn't great (although my car is supercharged). On the bright side, the car feels very sturdy and safe, which is a great feeling. In my opinion, if you're considering buying this car, I would only recommend it as a collector's item since it's no longer in production. Thanks for listening!

I'm so glad you're considering a 1995 Riviera! I bought mine with only 26,000 miles on it and it was trouble-free for a while. However, between 45,000 and 70,000 miles, I did end up spending about $5,000 on repairs. Despite this, I absolutely love the styling of this car, and it's fast and has a great ride. On the highway, I was able to get an impressive 25-27 mpg. If you do decide to get one, just be prepared to spend some money on maintenance and repairs. It's definitely worth it though! I sold mine in July of 2003, but luckily they're still very reasonably priced if you're interested in buying one.

I bought this car from a lovely little old man who had driven it for under 43000 miles. Since day one, I have been supporting my local mechanic's kids' college education. Unfortunately, I have had to spend over $3000 on repairs in just two years. The air conditioner went twice (I'm in Florida!), the transmission, intake manifold, and more. Due to my experience with this car, I am hesitant to purchase another American car.

It's a great car! The only downside is that the gas tank door tends to rust before any other part, for some reason. Unfortunately, there aren't many in the bone yard, so I spent a whole day trying to find one.
