The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series consists of the BMW F10 (sedan version), F18 (long-wheelbase sedan), BMW F11 (wagon, marketed as Touring) and BMW F07 (fastback/hatchback, marketed as Gran Turismo) executive cars and were produced by BMW from January 2010 (for the 2011 model year) to 2017, with F10 being launched on 20 March 2010 to domestic market and F11 in the summer of 2010. The F07 Gran Turismo was produced from early September 2009 to 2017, being launched in the domestic German market in late October 2009.

The F10 5 Series shares a platform with the F01 7 Series full-size luxury sedan and the F12 6 Series executive-sized grand tourers. The F10 generation is the first 5 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain, a turbocharged V8 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, a dual-clutch transmission (in the M5), active rear-wheel steering (called "Integral Active Steering"), electric power steering, double-wishbone front suspension, an LCD instrument cluster (called "Black Panel Display") and automatic parking (called "Parking Assistant"). A long-wheelbase sedan version (model code F18) was sold in China, Mexico, Turkey and the Middle East. Introduced in 2011, the M5 model is powered by the BMW S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The Gran Turismo (F07) is the first and only 5 Series to be produced in a fastback body style with a hatchback truck opening.

In February 2017, the G30 5 Series was released as the successor to the F10. G32 6 Series Gran Turismo (based on the G30 platform) succeeded the F07.

Common 2009 Bmw 550i problems

The 2009 BMW 550i has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most prevalent issues is related to the fuel system, with around one-third of the complaints submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concerning fuel issues. These problems include a gasoline smell, leaking fuel pumps, and oil leaks that can cause smoke to billow from under the hood and potentially enter the cabin, posing a fire risk.

Another common problem with the 2009 BMW 550i is related to the cooling system. The water-pump and thermostat are known to have problems, which can cause the engine to overheat if not addressed promptly. This issue is responsible for 25% of all mechanical problems in this model of vehicle, and if left unresolved, it can lead to more severe engine issues.

The air conditioning system in the 2009 BMW 550i has also been reported to have problems. Some owners have experienced the fan changing speed without any prompt from the controls and the system only blowing out cold air on the lower settings. This issue can impact the comfort of the vehicle, especially during hot weather conditions.

The E60 5 series, including the 535i, has been reported to have problems with its fuel pump system, resulting in poor engine performance, low power, and rough idling. This issue requires a full change of all the pumps, which can be a costly job.

In addition, worn tensioners and idler pulleys can make a squealing sound that rises from the engine bay. If not addressed promptly, this issue can affect the cooling system and cause problems with the alternator or power steering.

Finally, the timing chain in the M47/N47 engine is known to suffer from sudden snaps, which can render the engine useless. It is essential to check that the BMW 5 series has a full service that details the reviews and inspections that have been carried out on this part.

In summary, the 2009 BMW 550i has several common problems related to the fuel system, cooling system, air conditioning system, fuel pump system, and timing chain. These issues can impact the performance, safety, and comfort of the vehicle, and it is essential to address them promptly to avoid more severe problems.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2009 Bmw 550i.

2013-09-11
  • Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS
  • Summary: BMW is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2010 528i, 535i, 550i, and M5 passenger cars manufactured from March 1, 2007, through December 31, 2009. Over time, increased resistance at the taillight electrical contact points may cause damage to the ground terminal and housing of the connector resulting in an intermittent or permanent loss of functionality of one or more rear lamp functions (tail, brake, turn-signal, reverse).
  • Consequence: Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear lamp bulb carriers free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].
