The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series consists of the BMW F30 (sedan version), BMW F31 (wagon version, marketed as 'Touring') and BMW F34 (fastback version, marketed as 'Gran Turismo') compact executive cars. The M3 model (designated F80) was introduced in 2014 and is powered by the S55 twin-turbocharged straight-six engine.
In March 2019, the BMW 3 Series (G20) was released as the successor to the F30. But the F34 fastback model continued to be available until early 2020. Later, it was replaced by BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé (G26) in June 2021.

I DROVE MODERATELY TO MY DESTINATION. THIS DISAPPEARED AFTER STOPPING FOR 6 HOURS. THEN DROVE 200 MILES HOME NO ISSUES. NEXT DAY WARNING CAME BACK ON AND NOW CHECK ENGINE ICON IS LIT. DROPPED IT OFF AT DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. AS NOTED IN A PREVIOUS COMPLAINT POSTING, THIS IS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE, JUST NOT CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE (YET). $4,000 WAS QUOTED FOR REPAIR. NOTED 18,000 GAS ENGINES WITH RECALL FOR HPFP FAILURE. THE DEALERSHIP PRIOR TO MY ASKING ABOUT ANY MANUFACTURER LIABILITY IN THIS STATED HE HAD SEEN 4 PREVIOUS CASES. AFTER I ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY TSB ON THIS ISSUE, HE BACKTRACKED AND SAID THEY SEE 10'S OF THOUSANDS OF CARS A YEAR AND THIS IS A VERY LOW PERCENTAGE FAILURE. DIESELS ARE RARE IN US. I WOULD ARGUE THAT 4 DIESEL HPFP FAILURES OUT OF A MINISCULE NUMBER OF DIESEL BMWS SOLD IN USA WOULD BE A SIGNIFICANT FAILURE RATE.

- Summary: ON THE MORNING OF THE MAIN INCIDENT I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK AND THE ENGINE SUDDENLY DIED. I WAS ON A ROAD THAT WAS NOT HEAVILY TRAVELED AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE, THOUGH NOT EASILY, AND MADE IT TO WORK. IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON WHEN I HAD A BREAK I WENT TO THE PARKING GARAGE AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE CAR SO THAT I COULD DRIVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET IT CHECKED OUT. IT WOULD NOT START AT ALL AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED. THE MAIN PROBLEM TURNED OUT TO BE A FAILED FUEL PUMP, AND APPARENTLY IT DISINTEGRATED TO THE POINT THAT SHARDS OF METAL WENT THROUGH THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM LEADING TO THE NEED FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL INJECTORS AND COMMON RAIL, A $15,000+ REPAIR. EVEN THOUGH GASOLINE-POWERED ENGINES HAD BEEN RECALLED LESS THAN ONE MONTH PRIOR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DEALER BLAMED THE FAILURE ON THE FUEL THAT I USED.

- Summary: BMW North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 320i, 320xi, 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi, and ActiveHybrid3 vehicles manufactured October 20, 2011, to June 22, 2015, 2014-2015 328xi Sports Wagon vehicles manufactured March 21, 2013, to March 17, 2015, 2014-2015 328d, 328xd vehicles manufactured June 28, 2013, to April 21, 2015, and 2014-2015 328xd Sports Wagon vehicles manufactured July 5, 2013, to April 21, 2015. The affected vehicles may have been programmed with new software that inadvertently makes the front side marker lights inoperative in conjunction with the parking lights or the headlights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: If the side marker lights do not illuminate, the vehicle may be less visible at night, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will upload revised software to correct the issue, free of charge. The recall began on October 7, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or by email at [email protected].
