Although dubbed "quattro", the S3 uses a different "on-demand" four-wheel drive system. The Haldex Traction coupling adjusts the bias of torque distribution from the front to rear axle as grip requirements change - most of the time it operates as a front-wheel drive.
The S3 was sold in the United Kingdom, Europe, Mexico, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, but was not officially marketed in the United States.
The S3 was facelifted in 2000, where it was given one-piece headlights/indicator units, different front wings, rear lights clusters, and some minor upgrades to interior trim. There had been minor changes to the design previous to this, including digital clock on the dash.

I absolutely adore this car! I was lucky enough to purchase one of the first 2022 S3s to arrive at the dealership in October 2021. It's the premium plus package and comes with all the bells and whistles that a fully loaded Audi offers, except for the head-up display and dancing lights. The MSRP was just over $57K, but I managed to get it for a touch below MSRP (😊) and got a great deal on my trade-in. I've already driven close to 3200 miles and it's been an absolute joy to drive. It's quick, fast, handles like a dream, incredibly comfortable, and makes for an awesome daily driver. It also gets great mileage, looks fantastic, and is built like a tank. When I need to, it can go like a bat out of hell! I've owned a lot of nice cars, but this one is definitely my favorite. I was also considering a Golf R, but the interior and design of this car is worth far more than the options like the drift mode and extra few ponies Golf R offers.
