2011 Audi R8 problems

The Audi R8 is a mid-engine, 2-seater sports car, which uses Audi's trademark quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. It was introduced by the German car manufacturer Audi AG in 2006. Production ended in the first quarter of 2024.

The car is exclusively designed, developed, and manufactured by Audi AG's private subsidiary company manufacturing high performance automotive parts, Audi Sport GmbH (formerly quattro GmbH), and is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo and presently the Huracán platform. The fundamental construction of the R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame, and uses an aluminium monocoque which is built using space frame principles. The car is built by Audi Sport GmbH in a newly renovated factory at Audi's 'aluminium site' at Neckarsulm in Germany. At the time it was introduced in 2006, the R8 became the first production car with full-LED headlamps.

First generation (2006; Type 42)

The Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car (designed by Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig) first appeared at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show and the 2003 Frankfurt International Motor Show. The R8 road car was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006. There was some confusion with the name, which the car shares with the 24 Hours of Le Mans winning R8 Le Mans Prototype (LMP). Initial models included the R8 4.2 FSI coupé (with a V8 engine) and R8 5.2 FSI coupé (with a V10 engine). Convertible models, called the Spyder by the manufacturer, were introduced in 2008, followed by the high-performance GT model introduced in 2011. The Motorsport variants of the R8 were also subsequently introduced from 2008 onwards. An all-electric version called the e-Tron started development but would only reach production stage when the second generation model would be introduced.

6-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx described the R8 as "the best handling road car today".

The car received a facelift in 2012 and a new model called the V10 Plus was now added to the range. Production of the Type 42 ended in August 2015.

Positive 2011 Audi R8 car reviews

  1. Johnny Collier 2024-11-29

I recently compared the R8 to the Porsche GT3 and, while some hardcore fans may disagree, I found the GT3 to be too extreme for anything other than the track. On the other hand, the R8 is an absolute joy to drive on a daily basis and turns heads wherever it goes. Let's face it, when it comes to cars, nobody really cares about a Porsche. One downside to the classic styling and subtle changes over the last 50 years is that it just doesn't stand out. The R8, on the other hand, is a real head-turner. It's even more beautiful in person and it delivers amazing performance. I did consider the V10, but despite what some car press may say about the 4.2 being underpowered, I found it to be perfectly balanced.

  2. Niko Hartmann 2024-09-13

The Audi R8 1st Generation is truly a work of art on wheels! It's the best daily driver sports car on the market even 7 years later. The car is easily adaptable to making the V8 into a howling muscle car or with many aftermarket add-ons a showpiece worthy of any high-end car show. From a practicality view, it most definitely blows the doors off any Lambo and is much less common than any Porsche. The corvettes of 2009 don't even compare to the drivability and road-hugging capability of this unique car. Anyway you look at it, the 1st Gen R8 will take your breath away and if not careful take you up to an easy 90mph before you see the rotating red lights of your local's finest coming up behind you. Coupe or convertible, you can't go wrong with owning an R8.

  3. Samson Klein 2024-08-14

The R8 is a beautifully designed, engineered, and built car with every option offered. The engine is incredibly smooth and revs like a 4-cylinder, yet has the power of a V-8. Handling is great thanks to its mid-engine and low polar moment. The car is so confidence-inspiring that you'll want to push it to its limits through every curve and turn. While V-10 power might be welcomed, the car is very well-balanced and quick with the V-8. To extract maximum power and fun, you'll need to keep the revs up past 4000. The seats are the best I've felt in an exotic car, as comfortable as my A8L. There's plenty of comfort for two, but not much space for things. Footwell space is also minimal, especially on the passenger side.

  4. Oren Welch 2024-08-09

The Audi R8 is an exceptional car that I have had the pleasure of owning. Its stunning design never fails to turn heads at every intersection, and its performance is nothing short of superb, placing it in the Supercar category. Audi treats its R8 customers like royalty, and the luxurious interior and impeccable fit and finish only add to the overall experience. It is a versatile car that can be driven daily, and with no modifications, it can easily transition from the street to the track. While the R-Tronic transmission in auto mode may not be the best, the paddle shifters in manual mode make it the best transmission I have ever driven. As a daily driver, it gets around 19 mpg, but on the track, it's a different story. During my one track day, nothing was able to pass it. Overall, the Audi R8 is a car that I highly recommend owning.

  5. Maximus Hirthe 2024-07-23

Porsche 911 turbo's and Ferrari F430's are truly amazing cars, and I was actually considering buying one of those. However, I ended up getting my R8 and I have absolutely no regrets. From the moment I laid eyes on her on that showroom floor, I was mesmerized. The car is truly spectacular. It's no surprise, really, since Audi is the largest car manufacturer in the world with vast experience and success in rally, touring car championships (DTM) and last but not least LeMans. The R8 is a championship-winning LeMans derived car, and it's truly a dream come true. Of course, there is a lack of space, but if you're looking for a supercar, you're not looking for practicality. There is no such thing as a perfect car that does everything, but if you want to live the dream without having to sell your kidney, and if you want a smile on your face every time you start that engine, then the R8 is the car for you!
