D2 (Typ 4D; 1994–2002)
Development
In 1982, Ferdinand Piëch signed an agreement with Aluminum Company of America. The objective was to design and develop a car that would be substantially lighter than any other vehicles in its class (to compensate for the fact that standard all-wheel drive was around 100 kg (220 lb) heavier than competitors' rear-wheel drive). In the late 1980s, it was decided that the target vehicle would be a successor to the V8 (Typ 4C) flagship introduced in 1988. By 1990, a final design by Chris Bird and Dirk van Braeckel was chosen and frozen for series production in mid-1991. In September 1993, the Audi Space Frame (ASF) Concept was unveiled at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) as a D2 Typ 4D prototype in polished aluminum. Pilot production began in December 1993 and development ended in early 1994, at a total cost of $700 million (£418.1 million).

AT THE FIRST OCCURRENCE TO EACH ME AND MY WIFE, WE WERE ABLE TO CONTROL THE ACCELERATION WITH THE BRAKE TO BUY SUFFICIENT TIME TO GATHER OUR WITS AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, THOUGH IT WAS SCARY. NOW WE KNOW TO APPLY THE BRAKE AND PULL THE MAT BACK, REPLACING IT ON ITS PEGS ONCE WE STOP. AFTER THE FIRST OCCASION, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL AUDI DEALER IN DANBURY, CONN. THEY KEPT IT FOR THREE DAYS, HAD IT INSPECTED BY "CORPORATE" PEOPLE, AND IN WRITING CONCLUDED THAT EVERYTHING WAS "OPERATING AS DESIGNED AND INTENDED." THE SERVICE WRITER AT THE DANBURY AUDI DEALER TOLD ME THAT AUDI FELT THE PROBLEM WAS THE FLOOR MAT, AND SUGGESTED I PURCHASE HEAVY WINTER-TYPE MATS. You won't believe how amazing this luxury sedan is! It's even better than the BMW 700 series and the Mercedes Benz S series, which I've also owned.

The back seat, also known as the 'living room', is incredibly spacious, allowing passengers to really stretch out. It's so comfortable that most passengers fall asleep within the first 10 minutes of the drive. The interior compartment is beautifully designed, with a refined layout and a grand suede headliner. The handling is exceptional, surpassing even my 2002 A6 4.2, which is most likely due to the adaptive suspension.

I have loved the A8 since the D3 model was first shown. I waited patiently for the pricing to drop to a level I could afford (preowned). I have had my CPO car for 4 months and 5K miles, and I still love it. Although it is not as reliable as my 98 Lexus GS400 which had almost nothing go wrong with it after 145K miles, I still think it's a great car. I just had a number of things replaced at the 45K mile service, such as the trunk hinges (common problem), parktronic sensor, airbag sensor, and one softclose door sensor. Even with these little problems, I still love the car. No serious issue that will leave you stranded, but still something small that requires a trip to the dealer. I do not regret my choice, regardless.

I purchased the A8 to replace a BMW 740I and I have never regretted my decision. The fit and finish, ride comfort, overall performance, quiet ride, and responsiveness of the A8 have made me happy for the last 3 and a half years. Although I experienced a couple of electronic issues in the first 3 months, I have simply changed the oil and replaced the tires. Now, I am ready to downsize to a smaller sedan and I will definitely head straight to my Audi dealer for the new A5.

I have been the owner of this car for almost four years now. Unfortunately, the electronics in the car have been quite problematic. Despite having taken it to the shop over a dozen times, the issues still persist. However, I must say that many of the problems are not constant and only occur episodically. For instance, sometimes the lights won't go off unless you restart the car and drive it around for a few minutes before turning it off. At other times, it will indicate that a tire is low on air pressure when it is actually fine. I have decided to dispose of it and switch to a Lexus. I would not recommend buying this car as its reliability is not up to par.

The car is great, but I've been having some trouble with the NAV and radio shorting out. Audi has acknowledged the issue and is working on a solution, but as of now, there is no fix. It seems that only a few mid-year models are affected. We also purchased the Audi phone, but unfortunately, it hasn't lived up to our expectations. The sound quality is poor and it feels like a waste of money.

This sedan is fast and good-looking, with plenty of room inside. It also has good gas mileage, especially on the highway. However, the nav system and MMI operation can be a bit annoying, and the transmission is a bit quirky.
