Volkswagen Rabbit problems

The Volkswagen Golf Mk1 is the first generation of a small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen. It was noteworthy for signalling Volkswagen's shift of its major car lines from rear-wheel drive and rear-mounted air-cooled engines to front-wheel drive with front-mounted, water-cooled engines that were often transversely-mounted.

Successor to Volkswagen's Beetle, the first generation Golf debuted in Europe in May 1974 with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign.

History

Replacing the Beetle; early efforts

Volkswagen began producing prototypes of possible Beetle replacements as far back as the early 1950s, and may have received design proposals from Porsche earlier than that. All of the internal projects' names started with "EA", standing for "Entwicklungsauftrag" and meaning "Development assignment". This work began during the tenure of Heinz Nordhoff, who was Director General of Volkswagen from 1948 to 1968.

In 1952 the company built the EA41 in collaboration with Pininfarina. Essentially a rebodied Beetle, it never went into production.

The first EA47 prototype appeared in 1953; at least 11 more EA47 variations were built over the next three years.

By the mid- to late-1950s, questions about the future of the Beetle began to be asked from outside the company. In 1957, an article with the title "Is the Volkswagen dated?" appeared in the West German magazine Stern. Two years later, a similar headline was used in an article in Der Spiegel weekly news.: 236

In 1958 Porsche began a project numbered 728 for a revised Beetle. A few years later this became the Volkswagen EA53. This project continued for a number of years and produced several prototypes, with early ones having bodywork designed by Porsche and later ones styled by Ghia. The EA53 eventually led to the Type 3 model.: 92

In 1957 another design study, the EA97, was started. This exercise was larger than the Beetle, but kept the usual rear-mounted powertrain. Two hundred instances of this design were built. Styling varied, depending on whether a particular car's bodywork was done by VW or by Ghia. Some cars’ looks echo the later Type 3 cars, although the EA97 was smaller. The last EA97 was built in 1960. The EA97 would provide the basis for the Brasília model from Volkswagen do Brasil.: 158

The EA158 was a Beetle-successor project that started in 1962 with a unibody study by Pininfarina. As the project progressed the car grew in size and weight. Eventually it was rejected as a Beetle replacement, but served as the foundation of the subsequent Volkswagen Type 4 model.

In 1967 another set of prototypes for possible Beetle replacements appeared in the form of the EA235 and EA235a.

In 1968 the last internal prototype for a Beetle replacement built under Nordhoff's direction appeared. This car, designated EA276, was a small three-door hatchback with front-wheel drive using a front-mounted Volkswagen air-cooled engine. The EA276 program was cancelled after the death of Nordhoff, but did find new life as the inspiration for the Brazilian Gol.

During Nordhoff's time VW did broaden its product line with the launch of the Volkswagen Type 3 in 1961 and the Volkswagen Type 4 in 1968. In 1964 the company acquired control of the Auto Union group from Daimler-Benz and with it the technologies of the constituent companies of DKW, Horch, Audi and Wanderer.

  • Summary: I am making a complaint against volkswagen for refusing to perform the abs safety recall. The ABS module is dead, I found out the hard way that I have no ABS or traction control. I stopped on the highway and lost control, I could have died and the van that hit me twice could did worse. The dealer refuses to perform the recall and is completely unhelpful. Yes there were warning lights and thats why I took it to the dealer. P.S. This happened a day before the accident. Two different VW dealers refused to perform the ABS module recall on my car even though Volkwagen customer care called to make my appointment, the car was too old, the repair was to expensive and also that the module wasnt communicating. It specifically says it in the recall, that if the module is not responding to replace it. The next day when I driving the car on the highway, I stepped on the brakes and the car started spinning on the highway, It spun into another lane and hit another car. I realized that the car did exactly what a car with no ABS would do.

Latest negative Volkswagen Rabbit car reviews

  1. Jadon Marks 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2008

I had a similar experience to Sharon's. I was deciding between the Honda Civic and VW Rabbit, and ultimately chose the Rabbit because I loved the way it looked and thought it would be more fun to drive. However, I regret not considering the gas mileage more. Since I mostly drive in the city, with lots of stop lights and traffic, I'm only getting between 10-17 MPG. It's been causing me a lot of stress and I can't fully enjoy my beautiful car because I'm always worried about the gas. I've been told there might be a break-in period, but if I could go back, I would choose a different car.

  2. Rogelio Ledner 2024-11-05

    Vehicle year: 2007

I learned to drive in a 1954 bug and owned a 1995 Golf, which was a great car. Unfortunately, my love for VWs ended with my purchase of a 2007 Rabbit 10 months ago. The car has been a nightmare, with fuel consumption equal to that of a midsize SUV and a repertoire of sounds and noises that has only improved with time (the comment I got at the dealership was, if I thought I had bought a Bentley). My major complaint is with the clutch. At the dealership, they maintain that there is no possibility of adjustment, as some genius devised a self-adjusting system that cannot be altered in any way. So, the fun that used to be driving a manual transmission has turned into a dreadful event with this car.

  3. Wilbert Langosh 2024-10-20

    Vehicle year: 2007

Although I initially enjoyed this car, I am now looking forward to returning it. Unfortunately, I have experienced several issues such as the airbag light constantly being on, the electric windows malfunctioning, and having to replace the wiper motor. Additionally, I am currently experiencing starting problems that have yet to be resolved. After reading some reviews, I am also concerned about the brake pads. It seems like these issues will continue until I am able to replace the car. :(

  4. Stanton Rohan 2024-09-14

    Vehicle year: 2007

I purchased this car back in the summer of 07' and it was great from the start. However, after the first 10,000 miles, I started to experience some maintenance issues. Oil changes every 5k miles cost around $80, and every 10k miles major maintenance is recommended for around $300 - $500. Additionally, headlights and taillights tend to go out every 10K miles (especially after visiting the dealership). Unfortunately, the airbag harness in the steering wheel snapped, which cost me $600. I had to fight with VW corporate and explain that it was a safety issue not caused by me. The rear brakes had to be fixed at 35K miles for $400+, and the O2 sensor went out before 40K miles for around $400. Fuel additive maintenance cost me $250, and the front brakes just went at 65K for $400+. Despite these issues, I still have fond memories of this car.

My 07 Rabbit is a great car, very fun to drive and handles well. However, I have noticed that the brake system wears out the rear brake pads in record time. From my research, it seems to be a design flaw. Unfortunately, my rear brake pads were completely gone after only 21,000 miles.

I spent a long time searching for a vehicle before I finally chose the Rabbit. I was looking for something that was fun to drive, didn't guzzle gas, and most importantly, a car that I could be comfortable in. As a rather large individual, standing at 6'5

I have driven over 3000 kms and I am loving it more every day. This is my 6th car, and my 4th VW, and it is by far my favorite. I love the handling, acceleration, looks, interior, and especially how quiet it is. It has tons of room inside and I really appreciate how everything is laid out. I actually prefer the cruise control on the stick, as it makes for a cleaner looking steering wheel, and it is very easy to use, unlike previous Jetta models. So far, I have had absolutely no problems with it. It is built like a tank.

Our new Rabbit Black 2 Door Manual is only three weeks old! I traded in my '06 Ford Focus ZX4 for it. I was very disappointed with the Focus. However, I have already driven 1,350 miles on the Rabbit and I drove from NYC to Montreal and I have never had a better driving experience! The seats are great and the car is so smooth. Also, it was great on gas. I just spent $50 for the round trip! This car has great handling and quick acceleration. In my opinion, it is the best car I have owned so far. I just love it!

I'm so glad to hear that you've owned this car for several years and that it has proven to be incredibly reliable. It's great to know that you did your research and test drove several other cars before making your purchase. It sounds like the road control is amazing, especially for your 60 mile round trip to work. With an average of around 28 mpg, it's definitely an efficient choice. I completely understand what you mean about having to watch your speed - this car is no cotton tail, it's a jack rabbit! It's wonderful to hear that you haven't experienced any performance issues so far. Keep up the good work!
