The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.

As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.

The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 1984 Toyota Pickup problems

Common Problems with the Toyota Pickup 1984

The Toyota Pickup 1984 is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has some common problems that owners may encounter.

Rust and Damage

One of the most common problems with the Toyota Pickup 1984 is rust and damage. The bed of the truck is particularly susceptible to rust, which can be caused by exposure to the elements and road salt. If the bed is in poor condition, it may need to be replaced or repaired. Damage to the underside of the truck can also be a problem, particularly if the vehicle has been used off-road or in harsh conditions.

Timing Belt and Valve Cover Gasket Leaks

The timing belt is a critical component of the Toyota Pickup 1984's engine, and it can be a source of problems if it is not properly maintained. The timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles to prevent it from breaking and causing serious engine damage. In addition to the timing belt, the valve cover gasket can also be a source of leaks, which can cause oil to leak onto the engine and cause damage over time.

Brakes

The brakes on the Toyota Pickup 1984 can also be a source of problems, particularly if the vehicle is used for towing or has large, heavy tires. The brakes on solid-axle vehicles may not provide sufficient stopping power, particularly if the vehicle is heavily loaded. To improve braking performance, larger calipers and vented rotors can be installed, along with a larger-bore master cylinder.

Transmission

The L-series transmissions used in the Toyota Pickup 1984 are not as strong as later-model W-series transmissions. They are prone to bearing failure and have a short length, which can result in a steep front driveshaft angle. To address these issues, a stronger transmission can be installed, or the driveshaft angle can be adjusted to reduce stress on the transmission.

Steering

The steering components on the Toyota Pickup 1984 can also be a source of problems, particularly if the vehicle is used for off-roading or has large, heavy tires. The frame around the steering box can crack due to stress, and the starter brushes can wear out over time, leaving the vehicle unable to start. To address these issues, a kit can be installed to reinforce the frame around the steering box, and starter contacts can be replaced to improve starting performance.

Electrical Problems

Electrical problems can also be a common issue with the Toyota Pickup 1984. These problems can range from blown fuses to corroded wiring and contacts. To diagnose and fix electrical problems, a multimeter can be used to test fuses, wiring, and contacts. If a fuse is blown, it will need to be replaced. If the wiring or contacts are corroded, they will need to be cleaned or replaced.

Starter Relay

The starter relay on the Toyota Pickup 1984 can also be a source of problems. If the starter relay fails, the vehicle may not start, or it may only click once when the ignition is turned. To fix this problem, a new starter relay can be installed, or a cheaper Ford starter relay can be used as a replacement.

Air Conditioning

The air conditioning system on the Toyota Pickup 1984 can also be a source of problems, particularly if the vehicle is used in hot weather or has a worn-out compressor. To improve air conditioning performance, the compressor can be replaced, or the system can be recharged with refrigerant.

In conclusion, the Toyota Pickup 1984 is a reliable and durable vehicle, but like any vehicle, it can have common problems that owners should be aware of. By addressing these issues promptly, owners can ensure that their Toyota Pickup 1984 remains in good condition and provides reliable transportation for years to come.

TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-29
  • VIN: JT4RN50RXE0
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A USED VEHICLE WITH NEW LEMANS CHAMPION SE TIRES ON IT (P185/75R14) APPROXIMATELY FIVE YEARS AGO. I ONLY DRIVE THIS VEHICLE OCCASIONALLY (11,000 MILES IN 5 YEARS). ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO THE VEHICLE STARTED PULLING TO THE RIGHT AS IF IT WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT. RECENTLY, WHILE I WAS AWAY AT WORK, THE LEFT FRONT TIRE SUFFERED AND EXPLOSIVE FAILURE WHILE SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY. IT LOOKS LIKE A HIGH SPEED SEPARATION. I EMAILED THE MANUFACTURER WITH PICTURES AND THE RESPONSE WAS A COPY OF THE WARRANTY INFORMATION (12 MONTHS). MY MAIN CONCERN WAS THAT THE TIRE'S STEEL BELTS SEPARATED WHILE SITTING STILL. IF IT HAD HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ONE CAN IMAGINE THE RESULTS. I IMMEDIATELY PURCHASED NEW TIRES, DIFFERENT BRAND, AND TOOK THEM TO MY MECHANIC FOR INSTALLATION. HE INFORMED ME THAT ANOTHER ONE OF THE TIRES HAD STEEL BELT SEPARATION ALSO. AS I DESCRIBED THE VEHICLE PULLING TO THE RIGHT WHILE DRIVING, HE EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY THE ONE TIRE ON THE LEFT FRONT HAVING A LARGER DIAMETER DUE TO STEEL BELT SEPARATION.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2000-10-01
  • VIN: JT5RN55D5E0
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: CONSUMER STATES OVER TIME, PART OF THE AXLE SHAFT ONTO WHICH THE BEARING IS FITTED BEGINS TO BECOME THINNER, IN THE SAME MANNER THAT A CYLINDRICAL PIECE OF PLSTICENE WOULD BECOME THINNER IF ROLLED BETWEEN THE THUMB AND FOREFINGER, THE BEARING GRADUALLY BECOMES LESS AND LESS TIGHTLY FITTED ONTO THE AXLE SHAFT, THE FIRST SIGNS ARE A CLUNKING NOISE HEARD WHEN TURNING OR GOING OVER BUMPS, THEN SCRAPING NOISES ARE HEARD FROM THE REAR BRAKES DURING TURNS, BOTH AXLE SHAFTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED, IF THE SYMPTOMS ARE IGNORED, THE BEARING BECOMES SO LOOSE THAT IT BEGINS TO ROTATE AROUND THE AXLE SHAFT, CAUSING THE SHAFT TO OVERHEAT AND BREAK WHILE THE VEHICLE IS UNDERWAY. *SLC
