The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.

As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.

The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common Toyota Pickup problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Toyota pickup cars, several common problems have been identified:

  • Passenger Space Limitations: Toyota pickups are noted for having limited interior space, making it challenging to accommodate multiple passengers comfortably. This issue can be particularly inconvenient for families or individuals needing to transport passengers regularly.
  • High Maintenance Requirements: Toyota pickups, like the Tundra, have been described as high maintenance vehicles prone to breakdowns, especially older models manufactured before 2004. This can result in increased repair costs and inconvenience for owners.
  • Excessive Noise Levels: The Toyota Tacoma, a popular model, has been criticized for being excessively loud, with various engine noises reported by customers. These noises can be distracting and may indicate underlying mechanical issues that need attention.
  • Paint Fading Concerns: Owners have raised complaints about paint fading quickly on Toyota pickup trucks, particularly on Tacomas. This aesthetic issue can affect the vehicle's appearance and potentially reduce its resale value if not addressed promptly.
  • Weight and Handling: Toyota pickups have become heavier over the years, impacting their off-road capabilities and overall handling. The increased weight can lead to challenges in maneuvering the vehicle, especially in rough terrains or challenging driving conditions.
  • Electrical System Problems: Toyota pickups have faced issues with their electrical systems, contributing to the brand's reliability concerns. Electrical malfunctions can lead to various operational issues, affecting the vehicle's performance and safety.
  • Transmission Problems: Recent recalls have highlighted transmission issues in Toyota SUVs and pickup trucks, where certain parts of the transmission may not disengage properly, causing the vehicle to creep forward unintentionally. This poses a safety risk and necessitates software updates to rectify the problem.
  • Rear Axle Concerns: Specific to Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks, a recall was issued due to potential rear axle issues caused by a manufacturing error in certain models from 2022 and 2023. This problem could lead to retaining nuts loosening over time, posing a risk of parts separation and potential crashes.

These common problems reported by Toyota pickup owners encompass a range of mechanical, structural, and safety issues that can impact the overall ownership experience and vehicle performance.

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-01
  • Date Complaint: 2020-08-04
  • VIN: 4TARN01P8PZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I BOUGHT A 1993 4X4 TOYOTA PICKUP USED AND DISCOVERED IT IS RUSTED WORSE THAN ANY OTHER VEHICLE IVE EVER SEEN. THE FRAME IS RUSTED INTO IN MULTIPLE PLACES, THE BRAKE LINES HAVE RUSTED OFF AND I'VE LOST ALL BRAKES SO I CANT DRIVE IT AT ALL NOW. IT RUNS AND GOES GREAT OR WELL IT DID UNTILL FRAME BROKE AND BRAKES WENT OUT. APPARENTLY 1993 FRAMES ARE THE WORST FRAMES TO HAVE ACCORDING TO EVERYTHING IVE SEEN ONLINE. WHAT BOTHERS ME IS I HAVE A 1991 TWO WHEEL DRIVE TOYOTA TRUCK JUST LIKE IT AND IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY RUST AT ALL NOWHERE ON FRAME OR BODY. AND BOTH TRUCKS ARE FROM THE SAME AREA. THE 4X4 THATS LITERALLY A DEATH TRAP ONLY HAS 220000 MILES ON IT WHICH IS NOTHING REALLY. THE ONLY REASON I EVEN BOUGHT THE TRUCK IS BECAUSE TOYOTA TRUCKS ARE KNOWN TO GO 3,4,OR SOMETIMES 500000 MILES WITH HARDLEY ANY TROUBLE. I WOULD JUST LOVE TO B ABLE TO DRIVE MY TRUCK AGAIN, THATS ALL I WANT. THERE SHOULD DEFINITELY B A RECALL FOR EXTREME FRAME AND BODY RUST. IT SHOULDN'T B THAT RUSTY, IT'S LITERALLY THE WORST IVE EVER SEEN
Toyota Pickup 1984
  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-29
  • Date Complaint: 2020-07-15
  • VIN: JT4RN50RXE0
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A USED VEHICLE WITH NEW LEMANS CHAMPION SE TIRES ON IT (P185/75R14) APPROXIMATELY FIVE YEARS AGO. I ONLY DRIVE THIS VEHICLE OCCASIONALLY (11,000 MILES IN 5 YEARS). ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO THE VEHICLE STARTED PULLING TO THE RIGHT AS IF IT WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT. RECENTLY, WHILE I WAS AWAY AT WORK, THE LEFT FRONT TIRE SUFFERED AND EXPLOSIVE FAILURE WHILE SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY. IT LOOKS LIKE A HIGH SPEED SEPARATION. I EMAILED THE MANUFACTURER WITH PICTURES AND THE RESPONSE WAS A COPY OF THE WARRANTY INFORMATION (12 MONTHS). MY MAIN CONCERN WAS THAT THE TIRE'S STEEL BELTS SEPARATED WHILE SITTING STILL. IF IT HAD HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ONE CAN IMAGINE THE RESULTS. I IMMEDIATELY PURCHASED NEW TIRES, DIFFERENT BRAND, AND TOOK THEM TO MY MECHANIC FOR INSTALLATION. HE INFORMED ME THAT ANOTHER ONE OF THE TIRES HAD STEEL BELT SEPARATION ALSO. AS I DESCRIBED THE VEHICLE PULLING TO THE RIGHT WHILE DRIVING, HE EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY THE ONE TIRE ON THE LEFT FRONT HAVING A LARGER DIAMETER DUE TO STEEL BELT SEPARATION.

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-06
  • Date Complaint: 2018-12-10
  • VIN: JT4VN13D1P5
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE TRUCK IT MAKES A REALLY LOUD GRINDING/WHINING NOISE. FRAME IS BROKEN RIGHT UNDER THE BACK OF THE CAB AND FRONT OF THE BED FROM RUST CAUSING THE DRIVE LINE TO BREAK (GRINDING/WHINING NOISE). WAS TOLD BY MECHANIC THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH DRIVING BACK TO MY HOUSE FROM THE SHOP AND BEING FEMALE THE LAST THING I WANT IS FOR IT TO BREAK IN HALF AND BE STUCK ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. A COUPLE YEARS AGO I ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL LINES REPLACED BECAUSE OF IT RUSTING OUT AND CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK OUT. ANOTHER SAFETY ISSUE. BOTH OF THESE ARE SAFETY ISSUES THAT IF I DIDN'T FIND OUT COULD HAVE TURNED OUT REALLY BADLY BY EITHER FIRE, CRASH AND BOTH COULD HAVE CAUSED DEATH. WHY THIS YEAR OF TRUCK ISN'T INCLUDED IN THE 1995+ RECALL OF THE FRAME RUSTING IS BEYOND ME. TOYOTA KNOWS IT IS HAPPENING NOW THEY JUST NEED TO MAKE IT RIGHT.
