The development of the car began in 2013, led by Toyota chief engineer Hiroyuki Koba. The C-HR is built on the same TNGA-C (GA-C) platform as the E210 series Corolla and positioned between the Yaris Cross and Corolla Cross in Toyota's crossover SUV lineup since 2020. According to Toyota, the C-HR is a mixture of hatchbacks, B-segment SUVs and compact car platform, and has been described as a coupe crossover.

Production model
The production version of the C-HR was unveiled at the March 2016 Geneva Motor Show and started production in November 2016. It was launched in Japan on 14 December 2016. It went on sale in Europe, Australia, South Africa and North America in early 2017, and in Southeast Asia, China and Taiwan in 2018. The name C-HR can stand for either Compact High Rider, Cross Hatch Run–about or Coupe High Rider.
Initial production was in Japan and Turkey. The 2018–2020 model year North American-spec C-HR is imported from Turkey.

- Summary: Bought this vehicle brand new in 2018 from Toyota dealer and took it to all scheduled maintenance intervals at Toyota dealerships, including the 50,000 mile service at 48,000 miles in 2024. At 48,800 miles began hearing a whining noise from the engine. Took it to dealer at 48,882 miles and was informed I would need a new transmission with a quoted repair price of $8,900 USD. Search of C-HR forums and NHTSA reviews shows this to be a common and recurring problem. Dealer told me I was outside of my warranty based on the age of the vehicle. Dealer suggested I contact Toyota corporate for assistance as this is extremely low mileage for such an extensive repair. Toyota corporate only confirmed that the age of the vehicle was outside of warranty, offered zero assistance with repair costs, and indicated it would be an "out of pocket expense". This CVT is clearly an issue and could create an unsafe condition for drivers who are completely not expecting a Toyota powertrain to fail so early in its life. The fact that Toyota refuses to acknowledge, or provide assistance, is a travesty considering the reputation of the brand.

- Summary: My wife was driving the vehicle after taking it from its service around 58,000 miles and started hearing whirring noise coming from the front of the car and after returning from an overseas trip, I looked at it and thought that the wheel bearing was going. The mileage was only 59,003 miles. So, I scheduled a diagnostic service at the Green's Toyota of Lexington dealer, paid for it and Toyota and was told me that the transmission pump was failing, at 59,235 miles, but since the car was over 5 years old, which I purchased on 11/17/2017, warranty ended even though the car did not reach 60000, and that the cost estimate was $13,000+. I took it to a Power Transmission shop for a second option, paid for another diagnostics, and they stated that the transmission bearing is failing, and the transmission needs replacements, and that the cost estimate, for a remanufactured transmission, was $8,000+. I called Toyota, submitted report, C-HR Forum chats documentation that show other owners having issues even sooner, and they stated that since the car Power Train warranty was up, they could not do anything. And now I am seeing here over 112 complaints about the same issue when Toyota only recommends, on their maintenance manual, to change the transmission oil at 60,000 miles, not even an inspection before...., and the dealer that maintains my car looked at it around mileage 58,000, did not say nothing and scheduled the next service for 63,000 with no mentioning. So now, I have a $13,000 bill to pay to replace the transmission on a car that I paid $25,000+ for, but now only worths $19,000 and Toyota is taking no responsibility for this CVT transmission issue. Now, I have to fix and trade this car because I am afraid the transmission will go again, and I no longer have a warranty. I could have been in big trouble if I had continued to drive this vehicle as when the transmission would have gone it could have been anywhere. - Summary: When the driver of the vehicle is coming to a stop a loud whine is coming from the transmission area caused by the paper filter cartridge inside the transmission housing being plugged causing damage to the transmission due to no maintenance as indicated by the manufacturer. The manufacturer has indicated the transmission is bad and needs replacing after hearing it in the parking lot, but has also indicated this is a sealed system and does not need servicing... so which is it? The car industry gets to tell their customers that a wearable part does not need to be serviced any longer, but needs to be replaced when it fails from no service. The transmission has an actual paper filter cartridge inside the transmission and the only way to replace it is to remove the transmission pan, but was told this was a screen and not a filter. Since vehicle was out of warranty, the filter was ordered and replaced by removing the transmission pan and found the filter to be plugged. After replacing all parts including fluid with Toyota Genuine parts, the damage has already been done. Metal shavings were all over in the pan as captured by two magnets Toyota places in the transmission pan, yet this is a sealed system and does not need servicing only replacement after warranty goes out. Manufacturer needs to realize ALL wearable parts need servicing and let their customers know this information in the vehicle manual(s) because if these transmissions fail at highway speeds, damage, injury (including death) will be the result from a plugged non-serviceable/sealed filter. Will be splitting the plastic filter housing to inspect the filter media, but from the two openings where a portion of the media can be seen, it is completely plugged.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."
- Consequence: If the EPB cannot be applied, there is an increased risk of a vehicle rollaway if the vehicle is parked on a hill without being placed into "Park."
- Remedy: Toyota has notified owners, and dealers will update the programming of the skid control ECU as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2017. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is H0W.

This thing caught my eye and has not failed to impress. All the extras have made this the most fun vehicle I have ever had. I believe that reviewers who say it has problems accelerating haven't put the car in sport mode. In sport mode, it flies. The Toyota safety package is what sold me on this though. The other comparable crossover SUVs don't offer nearly what Toyota has standard here.

I purchased a used XLE Premium about 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love it! Despite reading some discouraging reviews, I have had no issues getting up to speed and merging into busy traffic on my daily commute. While my previous car had a faster V6 engine, I actually prefer this car due to its impressive safety features, particularly the blind spot monitoring. It handles beautifully and is both fun and comfortable to drive. The only downside is that it can be a bit noisy on the highway.

I have owned several Toyota models in the past, including three Corollas, two Prius Cs, and a Prius. As a result, I have come to expect excellent quality, dependability, and mileage from Toyota. The C-HR is a great-looking sub-compact SUV that performs relatively well in Sport Mode. It comes with standard safety features such as Lane Departure Assist/Accident Prevention, Pre-Collision Avoidance, and Emergency Braking Assist. Additionally, it offers standard creature comforts such as an Auto-Dimming Rear-View Mirror, 18” Alloy Wheels, a Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel, and Soft-Touch Interior Materials. However, I find it odd that the car does not offer satellite radio or navigation. Personally, I prefer using my portable Garmin to any factory-installed navigation system. There are two things about my C-HR that are not consistent with what I’ve come to expect from Toyota. Although I understand that there may be some issues with the first year of production of any vehicle, I did experience an unlikely event of a repair with just 1100 miles on the car. There was a banging noise when I turned on the AC, and apparently, a screw had come loose. The service department replaced the fan motor and housing, and the repair was covered by the factory warranty. Other than that, I have noticed that it takes very delicate feathering of the gas pedal to achieve decent gas mileage. The best I have averaged is 37 MPG on a trip to the vet with my kitty, when I was going out of my way to be as gentle as possible. The worst I have averaged is 18 MPG, which is unacceptable for a four-cylinder Toyota in 2018. I am aware that mileage improves after the first 1500 miles, even more so after the first 15000, but 18 MPG is for V8s. Overall, the C-HR is a great-looking, safe, and fun sub-compact SUV. Although it is not the best Toyota I have ever had, I am still under 1600 miles, so we will see.

I have recently acquired my first new car since 2007. Although it was advertised to get 27-31 MPG, I have found that it only gets 14-17 MPG. The acceleration is slow and the braking is noisy and grindy. Additionally, the ride could be smoother. However, after test driving the car and picking up another of the same model a few days later, I am confident in my decision to lease this vehicle for the time being.

Despite maintaining it well with the Toyota care package, it failed suddenly at 76,000 miles. The dealership has quoted me $9500 to replace it, which is quite expensive. The bearing in my transmission went out at 63K miles. Unfortunately, Toyota would not warranty the part as it was 3K miles over the 60K mile warranty. It seems that this is a common transmission issue with the C-HR that Toyota has yet to address. Before purchasing a C-HR, it may be worth doing some research.

This car is definitely a looker and a great value for the money! It's the perfect size for me and my occasional passengers, as well as for carrying larger items. It has a sporty yet classy vibe, which I love. While it may not have all the latest features of some other cars, it's unique and stands out from the crowd. However, I do wish the gas mileage was better and that it had a bit more power. If it had the same specs as the Camry or Honda Accord, I would definitely make this my top choice!

The transmission failed in my Toyota CH-R at 78k miles due to an internal issue. Upon researching, I discovered that many Toyota customers have experienced the same problem. Although some were fortunate enough to have it happen during the warranty period, many faced the same issues as I did. The mechanic quoted me $8,900 for the replacement and suggested that I contact Toyota to discuss the issue as it was a defect within the transmission. Despite multiple calls, Toyota refused to take any responsibility as the car was out of warranty. However, the certified Toyota mechanic confirmed that this is a known issue with the CH-R's transmission and recommended a new transmission replacement. Although the cost is high, it is the best solution to avoid future problems. It is unfortunate that Toyota is not taking accountability for this issue, but I am confident in my decision to replace the transmission. I advise caution when considering purchasing a Toyota CH-R. Despite my negative experience, I remain confident in Toyota's overall quality and will continue to consider their vehicles in the future.
