- Model: Subaru Loyale 1990
- Report Received Date: 1995-05-24
- Manufacturer: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: THE FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLE RELEASE BUTTONS CAN BREAK. THESE RED PLASTIC RELEASE BUTTONS ARE MARKED "PRESS." IF A BUTTON BREAKS, PIECES CAN FALL INTO THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE BUCKLE TO OPERATE IMPROPERLY.
- Consequence: THE SAFETY BELTS WOULD NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO AN OCCUPANT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CHECK THE CONDITION AND OPERATION OF BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES AND CAREFULLY INSPECT THE RED RELEASE BUTTON FOR ANY BREAKS OR CRACKS. THEY SHOULD ENSURE THAT BOTH BUCKLES ARE OPERATING PROPERLY BY INSERTING EACH LATCH PLATE INTO ITS BUCKLE, TUGGING ON THE BELT TO MAKE SURE THE LATCH IS SECURELY LOCKED, AND THEN PRESSING THE RELEASE BUTTON. THE LATCH PLATE SHOULD POP OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. IF EITHER RELEASE BUTTON SHOWS A SIGN OF BREAKING OR CRACKING OR IF EITHER BUCKLE FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY, OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CONTACT THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BUCKLE REPLACED OR REPAIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER IS DEVELOPING A REMEDY DESIGNED TO PREVENT FAILURE OF THE BUTTONS THAT ARE NOT CURRENTLY BROKEN.
- Model: Subaru Loyale 1991
- Report Received Date: 1994-03-23
- Manufacturer: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
- Summary: WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN CONTINUOUSLY UNDER EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES (-22 DEGREES F.) AND HIGH HUMIDITY WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE TRANSMISSION BREATHING (AIR) VENT CAN BE BLOCKED DUE TO MOISTURE FREEZING AT THE OIL LEVEL GAUGE. IF THIS OCCURS, PRESSURE INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION CASE WILL INCREASE AND PUSH OUT THE REAR OIL SEAL, CAUSING TRANSMISSION OIL LEAKAGE. THE LACK OF LUBRICATION CAN BURN THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE TRANSMISSION, CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO SEIZE AND THE VEHICLE TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP.
- Consequence: SUDDEN STOPS WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING CAN CAUSE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS TO BE THROWN AROUND THE VEHICLE AND CAUSE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL WHICH CAN RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE OIL GAUGE PIPE AND MODIFY THE OIL LEVEL GAUGE (DIPSTICK) OR REPLACE IT, DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF DIPSTICK IN THE VEHICLE.

I had never considered a Subaru Loyale before, but I bought it to save miles on my PT Cruiser. I am pleasantly surprised by the value-to-fun ratio. It's a 90 4WD 3-speed auto wagon that I purchased for $700 from a small dealer with 99,400 miles. It has no oil leaks, starts every time, and the 4WD works wonders on snow, mud, and even some curb and grade hopping. There is lots and lots of room, and while it's not fast, it gets the job done without any questions.

The Engine is amazingly reliable and still going strong. It starts every time, even on the coldest of days. Additionally, the air blows colder than my brand new Nissan Altima.

Hey there! I bought this car for a beater rally with my friends (under $1000). It sounded funny - the shady seller said it's because it has a boxer engine - so I had to redo the timing to make it run on four cylinders instead of four. But guess what? I did the 5500 km to Yukon with no major problems! Sure, the clear coat has come off in spots and the springs are very soft, but overall, not a bad car.

I've been driving a Subaru for 3 years now. The 4X4 is absolutely wonderful, it can get you out of any snow accumulation with ease.

I remember my parents buying a brand new car in 1992. Although it had four-wheel drive, it wasn't always able to pull through the snow due to its small amount of horsepower and torque. Unfortunately, it was also slow and had high RPMs at highway speeds, which made it quite boring to drive. After my parents paid it off, they decided to get rid of it. Overall, it wasn't the most exciting car to own.
