Pontiac Sunbird problems

The Pontiac Sunbird (also known as the Pontiac J2000 and Pontiac 2000) is a model line that was manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from the 1976 to the 1994 model years. Loosely deriving its name from the Pontiac Firebird, the Sunbird was introduced as the eventual replacement for the Pontiac Astre, replacing it entirely in 1978 as the smallest Pontiac (the later T1000 was slotted below it in size).

The first generation of the Sunbird used the subcompact GM H platform. Serving as the Pontiac counterpart of the Chevrolet Monza, the Sunbird was offered as a two-door notchback coupé and three-door hatchback and station wagon. The model was manufactured alongside the Monza, Buick Skyhawk, and Oldsmobile Starfire at Lordstown Assembly (Lordstown, Ohio), South Gate Assembly (South Gate, California) and Sainte-Thérèse Assembly (Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec), Canada.

The second generation of the Sunbird used the compact GM J platform. Serving as the Pontiac counterpart of the Chevrolet Cavalier, the Sunbird was marketed at various times as a two-door notchback coupé or convertible, three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon. The model line was manufactured alongside the Cavalier at Lordstown Assembly (Lordstown, Ohio), Ramos Arizpe Assembly (Ramos Arizpe, Mexico), and alongside the Buick Skyhawk and Oldsmobile Firenza at Leeds Assembly (Kansas City, Missouri) in 1982 only.

While not as long-running as the Bonneville, Grand Prix, and Firebird nameplates, Pontiac would use the Sunbird nameplate for 17 model years. After the Sunbird skipped the 1981 model year entirely, it was released as an early 1982 and renamed the J2000; the Sunbird name was returned for 1984. For 1995, the Sunbird underwent a substantial model update and was renamed the Pontiac Sunfire.

Latest negative Pontiac Sunbird car reviews

  1. Eladio Windler 2025-04-15

    Vehicle year: 1993

I love my S-Bird! It's been with me for over 4 years now, and I've personally put over 60K on the odometer (currently at over 140K). It still runs great! In fact, for the last 2 years, I've only had to change the oil - that's all the maintenance it needed!

  2. Kenny Rogahn 2025-04-10

    Vehicle year: 1992

I met my wife when she had this car. I have been driving it daily and it has now covered 181,000 miles. I have done regular maintenance on it, including replacing the water pump and timing belt twice in the same year. The interior design is good, but there is a flaw with the ignition - it sometimes gets stuck and the key cannot be removed. At 174k, there was a short in the wiring to the wipers and headlights, causing the wiper washer to go off when the lights were turned on. The interior light has also stopped working. However, overall it is a reliable car as long as it is taken care of with regular oil changes, etc.

  3. Eddie Crist 2025-04-07

    Vehicle year: 1991

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 'bird Gt. It has been treating me really well, even after driving it for 170000 miles without any rebuilds! Surprisingly, it still beats new cavaliers, sunfires, and almost any honda out there. The fuel mileage is decent, and although the ride can be a bit rough, I absolutely love driving this car. The 3.1 5speed combo is just great!

  4. Miles Hagenes 2025-03-24

    Vehicle year: 1994

My Pontiac Sunbird was purchased used a few years ago, and we've had a few issues with it. Unfortunately, we've had to replace quite a few parts. Additionally, we've noticed that it tends to overheat if driven for over 45 minutes in town. However, it works perfectly fine for short trips to the store or church. If you're considering this car, it's important to keep these things in mind.

  5. Israel Haag 2025-01-09

    Vehicle year: 1994

This is a great car! It was the cheapest car with a V6 that we could find for my then girlfriend, now wife, and we've put over 85,000 miles on it since we purchased it when it was two years old. Besides normal maintenance, we've only had to replace the alternator, battery, and some sensor that I forgot the name of. Although the alternator and battery went out rather early (around 60K miles), it has run really well overall.

  1. Niko Volkman 2025-04-19

    Vehicle year: 1993

Does anyone happen to know the horsepower of the '92 Pontiac Sunbird with the V6, 3.1L? I'm trying to compare it to the new (2002) Pontiac Sunfire's ecotech engine (4 cylinder, 2.2L, 140 horsepower) that I'm interested in. Thank you so much!

  2. Rhiannon Hilpert 2025-04-17

    Vehicle year: 1994

Glad to hear that you're not experiencing any issues with your car! The 3.1L V6 engine sounds really powerful and impressive when you step on the gas.

  3. Frederik Hickle 2025-04-15

    Vehicle year: 1991

    It is comfortable and roomy.

  4. Sheridan Zulauf 2025-03-20

    Vehicle year: 1994

Work and drive very well. The design is cool and it is highly economical. With good maintenance, it will last forever. It has decent power for a 4-cylinder car. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a first car.

  5. Jan Wiza 2025-03-18

    Vehicle year: 1994

I bought my fully loaded Sunbird SE 3.1L-v6 in '96 when it had 30k miles. It has been an awesome car ever since. I get great acceleration from stoplights and for passing; the car also has a very smooth ride and great handling. Overall, this little car has been very good to me. So good to me that when I went looking for another car a couple of years ago, I ended up keeping my Sunbird because nothing else performed as well. The name of the game, folks, is maintenance. Keep up with your oil changes and transmission fluid changes and the other basic maintenance and chances are high your vehicle will do well.
