Pontiac Sunbird problems

The Pontiac Sunbird (also known as the Pontiac J2000 and Pontiac 2000) is a model line that was manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from the 1976 to the 1994 model years. Loosely deriving its name from the Pontiac Firebird, the Sunbird was introduced as the eventual replacement for the Pontiac Astre, replacing it entirely in 1978 as the smallest Pontiac (the later T1000 was slotted below it in size).
The first generation of the Sunbird used the subcompact GM H platform. Serving as the Pontiac counterpart of the Chevrolet Monza, the Sunbird was offered as a two-door notchback coupé and three-door hatchback and station wagon. The model was manufactured alongside the Monza, Buick Skyhawk, and Oldsmobile Starfire at Lordstown Assembly (Lordstown, Ohio), South Gate Assembly (South Gate, California) and Sainte-Thérèse Assembly (Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec), Canada.
The second generation of the Sunbird used the compact GM J platform. Serving as the Pontiac counterpart of the Chevrolet Cavalier, the Sunbird was marketed at various times as a two-door notchback coupé or convertible, three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon. The model line was manufactured alongside the Cavalier at Lordstown Assembly (Lordstown, Ohio), Ramos Arizpe Assembly (Ramos Arizpe, Mexico), and alongside the Buick Skyhawk and Oldsmobile Firenza at Leeds Assembly (Kansas City, Missouri) in 1982 only.
While not as long-running as the Bonneville, Grand Prix, and Firebird nameplates, Pontiac would use the Sunbird nameplate for 17 model years. After the Sunbird skipped the 1981 model year entirely, it was released as an early 1982 and renamed the J2000; the Sunbird name was returned for 1984. For 1995, the Sunbird underwent a substantial model update and was renamed the Pontiac Sunfire.

The 3.1L V6 engine and top-down feature make for a truly enjoyable ride. This car has a great look and is affordable to purchase. Additionally, it has a good resale value in the spring.

I bought this car when I was younger and it was the best decision I ever made. It was truly awesome! Although it did have some electrical problems towards the end, it always ran great. I never spent more than $1000.00 on it in the 8 years that I owned it, including normal maintenance. It was especially great in the winter. Eventually, I bought a grand prix for more room. I do regret giving up the best car I ever owned to my husband for the derby, but it took 3rd place! Overall, I absolutely loved this car. The only issues I had were with the ABS system and the heater switch, which was operated by a switch under my dash. If you can find a Sunbird in good condition, I highly recommend buying it!

I've been the proud owner of my convertible for twelve years now, having bought it used in '99. Although it's starting to show its age, I still love it dearly. Over the years, I've had it repainted and put a new roof on it, and it has even survived three accidents - two front and one side - with flying colours. Despite being a heavy car, it has always been a reliable ride, although the brakes on the back wheel have been a bit of a challenge. Unfortunately, the car has developed a few leaks over time, which have caused some damage to the gauges. Additionally, the air conditioning is no longer functional due to a leak, but considering the car is 20 years old, I'm not too surprised. Nevertheless, the car still runs like a dream and I have no doubt it will continue to get me where I need to go.

Great car! The V6 5-speed is a whole lot of fun to drive. It's reliable and great to drive. I wish they still made them! It could be better on gas, but that's probably mostly my fault. The car just sounds great going through the gears!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 'bird Gt. It has been treating me really well, even after driving it for 170000 miles without any rebuilds! Surprisingly, it still beats new cavaliers, sunfires, and almost any honda out there. The fuel mileage is decent, and although the ride can be a bit rough, I absolutely love driving this car. The 3.1 5speed combo is just great!

This car is great fun to drive, but unfortunately, it seems to have some mechanical issues. At 195,000 km, I've had to replace a few parts such as 5 alternators, 3 starters, 2 sets of shocks, and a water pump. Some other things are also falling apart. However, I still enjoy driving it.

I bought this car with only 16K miles and it was in near perfect condition. Unfortunately, it was sideswiped in an accident and never quite recovered. Despite a series of less-than-competent body and engine mechanics, and 60K miles, the car is still so-so. The body is still in good shape and the engine runs pretty well with the proper plugs. Before the accident, I absolutely loved this car, except for the seats which weren't too comfortable for long drives. It's okay for highway driving, but the mileage isn't great due to its weight. However, the weight is a good thing as it probably saved my life in the accident. The big lesson I learned is to find a GOOD mechanic. One who doesn't know what they're doing can ruin your engine.

Hey there! I recently got this car at a great price for cruising down to the lake with my buddy. Although it had been sitting for 4 months, we knew it had potential. We did some typical maintenance work like changing fluids, fixing the brake lines, and even added a new stereo. After some cosmetic work, it has become a reliable car for us. The top works great, and everything electric works perfectly despite its age. Plus, we get an impressive 30 mpg with the old 2.0 4 cyl automatic. It may not be anything fancy, but it definitely gets the job done. Just remember to take care of it, and it will take care of you!

This car has some issues that need to be addressed, such as shaking, rattling, and groaning. However, the convertible top is a redeeming feature that makes up for some of its shortcomings. The V-6 engine could benefit from more power, and the seats could be more comfortable. Overall, this car has potential and with some improvements, it could be a great ride.
