The Dodge Colt is a subcompact car that was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors and marketed by Dodge for model years 1971 to 1994 as captive imports. Rebadged variants include the Plymouth Champ and Plymouth Colt, both were marketed by Plymouth.

The Colt was initially a rebadged variant of the rear-wheel drive Galant and Lancer families before shifting to the smaller front-wheel drive Mitsubishi Mirage subcompacts in 1979.

First generation (1971–1973)

Introduced in 1970 as a 1971 model, the first generation Dodge Colt was a federalized first-generation Mitsubishi Colt Galant. Available as a 2-door pillared coupe, 2-door hardtop coupe, 4-door sedan, and 5-door wagon, the Colt had a 1,597 cc (97.5 cu in) 4-cylinder engine. The unibody layout was traditional, front engine and rear-wheel drive with MacPherson struts in front and a live rear axle. Standard transmission was a 4-speed manual, with a 3-speed automatic being an option. The engine was initially rated for 100 hp (75 kW), but dropped to 83 hp (62 kW) in 1972 when manufacturers revised the method of measuring horsepower from gross to SAE net. For 1973, a GT hardtop coupe model was added featuring rally stripes, sport wheels, and a center console amongst other features. The Dodge Colt was Chrysler's response to the AMC Gremlin, Ford Pinto, and Chevrolet Vega. As a captive import from Mitsubishi, the Colt also competed directly with other Japanese imports, such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Datsun 1200.

Common 1992 Plymouth Colt vista problems

The 1992 Plymouth Colt Vista is a compact minivan that was produced by Plymouth, a defunct division of Chrysler. While the car has its fair share of fans, it is also known to have some common problems that owners have reported over the years.

One of the most common problems with the 1992 Plymouth Colt Vista is related to the front CV joints. The CV joints are responsible for transferring power from the transmission to the wheels, and they can wear out over time. In the case of the Colt Vista, some owners have reported that they had to replace the front CV joints twice. This can be an expensive repair, as it requires replacing the entire axle assembly.

Another common problem with the Colt Vista is undercarriage rust. This is a common issue with cars that are driven in areas with a lot of salt on the roads during the winter months. The salt can cause the metal to corrode, leading to rust. In the case of the Colt Vista, some owners have reported that the undercarriage has rusted out, which can be a significant safety issue.

The alternator is another component that has been known to fail on the 1992 Plymouth Colt Vista. The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and providing power to the car's electrical systems. If the alternator fails, the car may not start, or the electrical systems may not function properly. Some owners have reported that they had to replace the alternator twice on their Colt Vista.

The torque converter is another component that has been known to cause problems in the Colt Vista. The torque converter is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission. If the torque converter is not functioning properly, the car may not accelerate smoothly, or it may have difficulty shifting.

In addition to these common problems, the 1992 Plymouth Colt Vista has also been subject to recalls and technical service bulletins. For example, there was a recall issued in 1992 for the fuel tank filler pipe, which could crack and leak fuel.

Despite these common problems, the 1992 Plymouth Colt Vista has its share of fans. Some owners have reported that the car is reliable and has served them well for many years. However, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common issues and to budget accordingly for any necessary repairs.
