The Mazda CX-90 is a full-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Mazda. It is the second vehicle to use Mazda's rear- and all-wheel drive with longitudinal engine layout categorized as Large Product Group after the CX-60. The largest Mazda SUV to date, the CX-90 replaced the CX-9.

A version with two-row seating, while retaining the same bodywork, body length and engine options is marketed as the Mazda CX-70. The CX-70 was introduced in January 2024, featuring minor styling differences compared to the CX-90.

Overview

The CX-90 was revealed on 31 January 2023, for the North American market, while a release in the Australian and Middle Eastern markets occurred later during 2023. The CX-90 is available with a choice of six, seven, or eight seat configurations. The CX-70, the two-row variant with five seats, was revealed on 30 January 2024 in North America. The CX-70 differs from the CX-90 by its front and rear bumper designs, black exterior accents replacing chrome, unique wheel designs, and differing interior colour scheme options.

With the use of the rear-wheel-drive-biased large vehicle platform, the CX-90 and CX-70 are placed into the brand's internal "Large Product Group" category. According to Mazda, the CX-90 addresses many of the weaknesses of the CX-9 such as its small interior space.

The CX-90 and CX-70 are also equipped with the Kinematic Posture Control technology, a feature originally developed for the 2022 MX-5 Miata and also present in the similar CX-60. The software suppresses the vehicle's body lift during cornering to improve stability and traction, helping occupants maintain a natural posture.

The CX-9 was discontinued in North America, replaced by the CX-90 and CX-70. Like its predecessor, the CX-90 will not be sold in Japan (despite being built there) or Europe.

Common 2024 Mazda Cx-90 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2024 Mazda CX-90, several common problems have been reported:

  • Transmission Problems: The multiplate wet-clutch transmission in the CX-90 has been a point of concern for owners. Complaints include a hiccup or jolt at low speeds, leading to a need for smoother acceleration. Owners have noted issues like shuddering, hesitation, and stuttering, especially after a full stop and at slow speeds. Mazda is urged to refine the drive experience to ensure smooth acceleration at all speeds.
  • Interior Quality and Software Updates: Despite positive feedback on the interior quality, owners have highlighted issues with software updates and a laundry list of problems. Ghost alerts, drivetrain noises, and a range of software updates and bulletins have been mentioned. The plug-in hybrid variant specifically faces challenges, including weird drivetrain noises and alerts for non-existent objects around the vehicle .
  • Rear Suspension Concerns: Some CX-60 vehicles have experienced unsettled rear suspension affecting both the plug-in hybrid and diesel versions. Mazda is addressing this by fitting revised rear dampers to new vehicles to counter the effects of a bouncy and unsettling ride. Vehicles built before September 2023 are being retrofitted with these revised dampers .

These reported issues highlight some of the key concerns that owners of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 have faced. From steering and transmission problems to interior quality and rear suspension issues, addressing these issues is crucial for Mazda to ensure customer satisfaction and maintain the reputation of their vehicles.

Negative 2024 Mazda Cx-90 car reviews

  1. Stanley Brekke 2024-10-04

Hi there! I've been the proud owner of the CX90 PHEV for 2 months and 10 days now. Recently, I noticed that when I charge the car to 100%, the battery only has a range of 19 miles instead of the initial 26 miles. I took the car to Gunther Mazda Ft. Lauderdale and they explained that the electric range can fluctuate between 16-26 miles depending on various factors such as temperature, driving pattern, and load on the car. While I understand that these factors can affect the range, I was hoping for a more consistent charging experience. I have reached out to Mazda of North America and am waiting for their response to help clarify and resolve this issue. I believe that the car should charge to 26 miles +/- 1 or 2 miles, as advertised, to ensure a reliable driving experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

  2. Alexys Champlin 2024-10-01

I was really looking forward to renting one of these cars, as I drive around 30 different cars per year. While the car drove fine with 6240 miles on it, I did notice some issues with the build quality. The gear shift knob rattled, the hood appeared to be skewed to one side, and the gas fill cover felt like a flimsy piece of plastic. It took me a few minutes to figure out that the car had to be turned off before the cover would release, which was a bit inconvenient given that I rented the car in NW Iowa during a bitterly cold day with a 25 mph wind. Turning off the car made for a chilly reentry. Despite these issues, I still have a soft spot for the Cx5. However, I do feel that the CX 90 could use some improvements in terms of build quality.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my thoughts on the different vehicles I test drove. I found that the turbo premium plus version of the vehicle drove beautifully and had a nice interior, but it was quite expensive at over $53,000. On the other hand, the Kia Telluride with similar features was just over $40K and was bigger, while the Kia Sportage Hybrid was also priced at $40K. I hope this information is helpful to you!

  4. Erwin Rosenbaum 2024-08-23

This car is a safety hazard and should be recalled immediately. I experienced a dangerous incident where the car decelerated from 65mph to zero within seconds, leaving me stranded on the freeway. Despite being given a loaner car, the same issue occurred again, with sudden deceleration on the freeway. This experience was extremely frightening and I have lost all confidence in Mazda. We are currently in the process of working with them to receive a refund.

  5. Ned McDermott 2024-06-03

Hello, I purchased a CX90 Preferred Plus last July 2023. Unfortunately, I damaged the underneath by hitting something while driving, which damaged the hybrid battery. Thankfully, my insurance covered the repair cost. However, the problem is that the dealership doesn't have any hybrid batteries available, and my SUV has been sitting in their parking lot since October 2023. I am disappointed about this situation. I have a question: if you don't have the necessary parts available, why sell the car to the customer? Accidents can happen to anyone at any time. I would appreciate it if someone from Mazda customer care could help me fix my SUV and get the hybrid battery as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and attention.

Positive 2024 Mazda Cx-90 car reviews

  1. Jeremie Hickle 2025-01-27

I've been driving my CX-90 Preferred Plus for a few weeks now and I wanted to share my perspective. I traded in my 2020 Honda Passport, which had similar horsepower but different torque. There are a few quirks that I've noticed, such as the hybrid system for starting the car, which took some getting used to. It's a bit jittery for a brief moment, but it doesn't really bother me. The charging pad is a bit sensitive, so you have to make sure you place your phone just right. There's not a ton of storage space for stuff, but that's not a big deal. On the plus side, the driving dynamics are simply awesome. The steering, braking, and acceleration are very responsive. The interior is well put together with nice touches, even at my lower trim. This car is way more responsive than the Honda Passport with similar horsepower. I know the torque is what is really pushing this, but still, what a difference. The ride quality is nice with pretty comfy seats (I'm 6'1 and a bit on the larger side) and I have no issues with the seats. The interior is quiet and there are ample outlets. The 3-row seats are usable, which is all I cared about since I'm not putting someone back there all the time. In conclusion, if you value driving dynamics over utilitarianism, then the CX-90 might be a good option. If you want more loading space, there are better options.

  2. Lonnie Breitenberg 2025-01-14

After shopping around for over a year, we finally found the perfect SUV for us - the new Mazda CX-90! It has exceeded our expectations with its high reliability and build quality. The sporty luxury SUV comes with second row heated captains chairs and ample cargo room behind them, making it the perfect fit for our family. We opted for the regular turbo, which gives us 320 lbs of torque immediately on regular gas. We love the stylish look of the CX-90 in Artisan Red, with Turbo Premium Plus options. We test drove it and bought it immediately. It's like a big AWD turbo Miata! We've had it for a month now and we're absolutely in love with the looks and handling. Even our kids love the captains chairs!

  3. Darrell Fahey 2025-01-12

I purchased my CX90 on 9/25/2023 and I still have a smile on my face. My wife and I are in our mid-70s and this was the perfect SUV for us. As a Mazda fan, I still own a 2013 Miata MX5 convertible as my fun in the sun toy. The Preferred Plus trim was perfect for us as we needed a second-row bench seat, which is not available on upper trims, for our dogs. With 280hp, it has more than enough power for highway merging and has ample passing power when needed. Like all Mazdas, this is a driver's vehicle with great handling, good power, and fantastic fit and finish. I test drove the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade, which were okay, but none of them drive like the CX90. While those have more cargo space and legroom in the third row, it was not a necessity for us. I traded a 2018 VW Atlas V6 I had for 5 1/2 years and it was cavernous like the other 3 I test drove. However, none of these are a driver's vehicle like the CX90. The turbocharged 3.3-liter at 280hp uses regular gas and gets better gas mileage than the others. If you want a mid-sized SUV that has more than adequate power, fantastic handling, and the best fit and finish of any vehicle in its price range, the CX90 is a real winner, especially in the Preferred Plus trim. It's both Zoom Zoom and superb handling all in one package. Personally, I don't have a single dislike.

  4. Ezra Mann 2025-01-09

I have a Platinum Plus PHEV and I absolutely love it! The interior design is fantastic, with all the necessary information, navigation, phone, Android Auto, and air conditioning settings being simple, easy to use, and cleverly designed. The seats are comfortable and the air conditioning is amazing. The only downside is that the battery EV only lasts for 26 miles, but driving in Normal mode balances it out. I needed a bigger vehicle for my big, gorgeous dog and beach equipment, and I'm so glad I chose this car. I appreciate that Mazda doesn't add a 5k surcharge or dealer ad on. Overall, I'm thrilled with my new car!

  5. Miller Schulist 2024-11-18

I can tell you love your Mazda! It's great to hear that it has been reliable for you and that the dealer was able to quickly resolve any issues. It's clear that you trust your Mazda to keep your family safe and that's really important. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!
