The Lexus IS (Japanese: レクサス・IS, Hepburn: Rekusasu IS) is a compact executive car (D-segment in Europe) sold by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota, since 1998. The IS was originally sold under the Toyota Altezza (Japanese: トヨタ・アルテッツァ, Hepburn: Toyota Arutettsua) nameplate in Japan from 1998 (the word Altezza is Italian for 'height' or 'highness'). The IS was introduced as an entry-level sport model positioned below the ES in the Lexus lineup.

The first-generation Altezza (codename XE10) was launched in Japan in October 1998, while the Lexus IS 200 (GXE10) made its debut in Europe in 1999 and in North America as the IS 300 (JCE10) in 2000. The first-generation models were powered by a straight-six engine and available in sedan and wagon variants. The second-generation IS (codename XE20) was launched globally in 2005 with V6-powered IS 250 (GSE20) and IS 350 (GSE21) sedan models, followed by a high-performance V8 sedan version, the IS F, in 2007, and coupé convertible versions, the IS 250 C and IS 350 C, in 2008. The third-generation Lexus IS premiered in January 2013 and includes the V6-powered IS 350 and IS 250, turbocharged IS 200t/300, hybrid IS 300h and performance-tuned F Sport variants. The IS designation stands for "Intelligent Sport".

First generation (XE10; 1998)

Produced as a direct competitor to the luxury sports sedans of the leading European luxury marques, the XE10 series Toyota Altezza and Lexus IS was designed with a greater performance emphasis than typically seen on prior Japanese luxury vehicles. The engineering work was led by Nobuaki Katayama from 1994 to 1998 under the 038T program code, who was responsible for the AE86 project. Design work which had been done in 1995 by Tomoyasu Nishi was frozen in 1996 and filed under patent number 1030135 on 5 December 1996, at the Japan Patent Office. At its introduction to Japan, it was exclusive to Japanese dealerships called Toyota Netz Store, until Lexus was introduced to Japan in 2006. The Japan-sold AS200 Altezza sedan and AS300 Altezza Gita correspond to the Lexus IS 200 and IS 300 models respectively, as sold in markets outside of Japan. The Lexus IS' primary markets were North America, Australia, and Europe. The Altezza Gita was a hatchback-station wagon version sold in Japan and was known in the US and Europe as the Lexus IS SportCross. The AS300 Altezza Gita was the only Altezza with the 2JZ-GE engine; in export markets this engine was available in the sedan models as well as the Lexus IS300 Sedan.

Summary: THE DASHBOARD OF MY 2020 IS350 THAT I HAVE HAD FOR LESS THAN A MONTH IS ALREADY SCUFFED. I WAS SIMPLY TRYING TO SWIPE A PIECE OF HAIR OFF OF THE DASH AND IT LEFT A SCUFF ON THE DASHBOARD THAT WILL NOT COME OUT. I AM DEVASTATED AS I SPENT $50,000 ON THIS CAR AND HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN IMMACULATE CARE OF MY VEHICLES; HOWEVER, SIMPLY WIPING THE DASH HAS CAUSED IRREVERSIBLE SCUFFS. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, I DO SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER LEXUS OWNERS HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. IS THERE AN EXISTING RECALL FOR THIS THAT CAN BE EXTENDED INTO THE 2020S? Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2010-2016 4Runner, 2003-2006 Tundra, 2003-2013 Corolla, 2009-2010 Corolla Matrix, 2004-2005 RAV4, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2011-2013 Sienna, 2008-2012 Scion xB, 2008-2009 Lexus IS-F, 2007-2012 Yaris and Lexus ES350, 2010-2017 Lexus GX460, 2002-2010 Lexus SC430, 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2015 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. Although some people say it looks like a compact car, I still think it's a first-class ride. Of course, it does come with a higher price tag, but I plan on keeping it for at least 5 years. The vented front seats may not be as effective for cooling as expected. It's important to avoid spilling anything on the seats as it may be absorbed into the material. While the stock stereo has a great midrange, the bass can be a bit boomy and distorted. The ride can feel a bit unusual as you can feel the road and bumps, yet still feel somewhat disconnected. When driving at decent speeds, there may be some understeer, and the VDIM can be intrusive, kicking in earlier than necessary. It's worth noting that the VDIM can only be turned off by holding the off button for 7 seconds when the car is not moving, which can be a bit frustrating. If you experience any back pain, even occasionally, driving this car may be uncomfortable. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving this car and had high expectations for it.

The exterior of the car looks great and it has a lot of power. However, the interior falls short. As a 2014 model, Lexus missed the mark, especially when it comes to modern electronics. Some of the design flaws include: the compass pointer appearing to point in the opposite direction, poor map utility, no change holder for coins, a cup holder that is too narrow for anything other than a small cup, no designated spot for your phone, missing featured buttons on the radio such as the Scan button, no memory setting for seats/mirrors, poor turn signal design, poor dash display, and muffled radio highs. We hope that Lexus will take these issues into consideration for future models.

Although I have owned three Lexus vehicles, my experience with the 2006 Lexus IS350 has been disappointing. Despite being a reliable car, I have encountered issues with Lexus's warranty, particularly with the 'sticky' dashboard and door panels melting, which poses a safety hazard. Despite contacting Lexus, I was only offered a dashboard cover as a solution, which does not address the underlying issue. The door panels were quoted at $800 per door, which is not a reasonable solution. As a loyal customer, I am disappointed that Lexus has not lived up to its claim of 'pursuit of perfection.' While I appreciate the reliability of the car, the quality defect and lack of satisfactory customer service have led me to reconsider my loyalty to the brand.

I've noticed a lot of posts comparing Lexus to BMW, and I'd like to ask BMW owners to specify when they're reviewing their car - is it before or after 50,000 miles? Personally, I've owned a 3 series, 5 series, 2008 X-5 4.8 L, and a 2014 X-3. Unfortunately, in 50% of my BMWs, I experienced major mechanical issues in or around 50,000 miles. I never expected to choose a Lexus over a BMW or Mercedes. BMW has always been the market leader, but after driving the Lexus, I have to wonder why. The Lexus is everything and more than the BMW 335i, and it's almost $12k less when fully loaded. The performance is excellent, it's quiet, and all the controls are in the right place - it's perfect. If you're considering a performance-luxury small sedan, I would definitely recommend this car.
