The Land Rover Defender (initially introduced as the Land Rover 110 / One Ten, and in 1984 joined by the Land Rover 90 / Ninety, plus the new, extra-length Land Rover 127 in 1985) is a series of British off-road cars and pickup trucks. They consistently have four-wheel drive, and were developed in the 1980s from the original Land Rover series which was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948. Following the 1989 introduction of the Land Rover Discovery, the term 'Land Rover' became the name of a broader marque, and thus no longer worked as the name of a specific model; thus in 1990 Land Rover renamed the 90 and 110 as Defender 90 and Defender 110 respectively. The 127 became the Defender 130.
The vehicle, a British equivalent of the Second World War derived (Willys) Jeep, gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility. Using a steel ladder chassis and an aluminium alloy bodywork, the Land Rover originally used detuned versions of Rover engines. The original Defender is still being produced in developing countries despite the arrival of the Land Rover Defender (L663).
Though the Defender was not a new generation design, it incorporated significant changes, compared to the series Land Rovers, such as adopting coil springs front and rear, as opposed to all leaf springs on the previous; except for retaining rear leaf springs on high capacity (payload) models. Coil springs offered both better ride quality and improved axle articulation. Adding a lockable centre differential to the transfer case gave the Defender permanent (on-road) four-wheel-drive capability. Both changes were derived from the Range Rover, and the interiors were also modernised.
Externally, a full-length bonnet and full-width integrated grille and headlights, combined with (finally) a single-piece windscreen, plus widened wheel arches that covered new, wider-track axles were the most noticeable changes. Initially the engineering department conserved a part-time 4WD system, like on previous models, but it failed to sell, and this option was dropped in 1984. While the engine was carried over from the Series III, a new series of modern and more powerful engines was progressively introduced.
Even when ignoring the series Land Rovers and perhaps ongoing licence products, the 90/110 and Defender models' 33-year production run were ranked as the sixteenth longest single-generation car in history in 2020.
In 2020, Jaguar Land Rover introduced the first all new generation of Land Rover Defenders, switching from body on chassis to integrated bodywork and from live, rigid axles to all around independent suspension. While starting at a higher base price, the new model brought significant improvements to on road dynamics over the old model, air suspension is available on most trims. The range was originally limited to just two wheelbase lengths before a third, the Defender 130, was announced in 2022. The new Defender series is only available in closed, estate car bodies.

We have been proud owners of Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds for many years. However, when we were shopping for a new vehicle in October 2023, we found that the quality was not up to the mark and the prices were high. Therefore, we decided to explore Land Rovers. We also own a Model Year 2019 Jaguar XE R-Sport that has been running flawlessly for five years and 60,000 miles. We were not concerned with the undeserved reputation of poor quality by JLR found in Consumer Reports, who lately have been pushing Eco cars over their prior pure vehicle reviews. During our visit to the local JLR Dealership, we saw a Defender 110 in Tasman Blue (also known as Royal Air Force Blue in the UK) with full Black Pack trim and 22-inch Black rims. The interior was full leather throughout and of very high quality. It had the P400 MHEV engine (an inline six-cylinder petrol engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged with Mild Hybrid 48V EV assist on launch) with a throaty exhaust that propels this 5400lb+ vehicle going 0-60MPH in only 5.8 seconds, which is impressive! If you are debating between the P250 2.0L 4-cylinder, the P400 MHEV, or 5.0L v8, we highly recommend the P400 MHEV, which sounds great, is faster off-the-line than the V8, and gets better MPG too. The Defender 110 sits way taller than our old Jeep Wrangler 4-door Unlimited, has a full pano glass roof with safari ridge windows, and fantastic rear seating too (I am 6'2

I've been a Land Rover owner for quite some time now. I recently picked up this truck that I had ordered back in November, and I must say, it's been a great ride so far. I'm really looking forward to taking it off-road!

I've driven every mid-size luxury SUV out there and I must say that the Defender is the best. It's rugged on the outside, but refined on the inside, providing a great driving experience. We needed more room beyond our BMWX3 and the back has more room than a BMWX5. The Pirelli tires, four-cylinder engine, and air suspension combine for a very refined yet stable ride.

I tested out the Defender and was hoping to buy one. The interior was perfect. If you're mostly driving on highways and around town, the Defender is a terrific choice. It was smooth and with air suspension, everyone will be happy. I have no negatives for the on-road driving experience. It even has a plug in the trunk for your coffee maker, which is perfect. However, if you plan to do some adventure driving, then there are a few drawbacks. The exterior of the Defender seems to be a confused mess. Is it a Range Rover trim or a luxury family adventure SUV? The styling of the exterior shows that JLR is confused as to why the Defender shouldn't just be a RR with a different hood decal. If the Defender stays on the pavement, the sleek exterior has no negatives and looks great. However, if you plan on driving off-road for a bit, then the sleek style exterior is not ideal because it's unlikely to be kept that way. I'm holding off on buying, hoping JLR fixes a few problems I had with it. First, the Defender has a glass roof. This is great for many, but not for me, given that I load the roof. JLR offers no choice on the glass roof, and the Defender is effectively a fishbowl on wheels. I'm not sure why JLR wouldn't want to configure a family adventure type SUV with a solid and reinforced metal roof? I'm not suggesting everyone would want that, but why not offer a solid roof to those that do? The second hesitation was the rim size. A Defender with 21Who knows, but from experience, many cars get stuck in the snow due to poor tire selection. It's not that the engine lacks power, but rather the tires don't provide the necessary traction to get unstuck. As anyone who drives in snowy places knows, snowbanks along the road can be hazardous if you get too close, so tire choice is crucial. While the fancy technology on the Defender is impressive - the low gearing and locking differential programs will keep you moving over anything - my hesitation was not on the tech side, but rather the reality that ultimately it's all reliant upon the rubber beneath it. If you can increase the durability of the tire and sidewall height, you'll never find yourself in a spot where using the traction control is necessary (as you'll be stuck long before you max out the tech side of Defender). Going beyond the technical capability of the Defender is not likely, so you have to wonder what surface is below the Defender that requires such capable off-road programming? What type of scenario requires the Defender to lock a rear differential? Whatever is suggesting you lock, I don't think you'd want to be on low profile street treads. That's the point - if you're locking, the ground below is telling the computer that Defender needs to, and whatever is under the tires, it's not the smooth and traction available pavement. The off-road technology is so far ahead of the basic rubber on the road that it's more likely the tires give out way before any of the off-road tech. This is one area I think JLR can improve upon - making Defender ready for 18There is a wide range of tire options available for 17 and 18-inch rims, but unfortunately, there are limited choices for 19-inch rims. It appears that JLR has designed and marketed the Defender to excel on the road. The driving and handling are exceptional, and the interior space is impressive, with ample room for personal items such as water bottles, coffee cups, and iPhones. The Defender truly stands out with its unparalleled vertical cabin height, which is unmatched by any of its competitors. However, taking a sleek SUV like the RR off-road, as well as the tire issue, may result in costly dents and scratches. Additionally, the windshield may be prone to cracking from rocks on the road. If you're looking for an adventure SUV that can handle rough terrain, the Defender may not be the best choice at the moment. However, I believe that JLR will eventually make the Defender more suitable for adventure drivers. For now, the Defender is an excellent choice for on-road driving, and it performs exceptionally well. It may not be the ideal luxury family adventure SUV for everyone, but it is a home run for those who prioritize on-road driving. As the market for family adventure SUVs grows, JLR may consider making adjustments to the Defender to cater to this niche market.
