The Kia Soul EV (also known as Kia e-Soul) is an all-electric subcompact hatchback manufactured by Kia and based on the Kia Soul. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official range for the 2020 Kia Soul EV is 243 miles (391 km).

Deliveries of the first generation began in South Korea in May 2014. European sales began in July 2014. Sales started in the U.S. in October 2014; initially it was sold only in California, Oregon, and several Eastern states with the largest EV markets and infrastructure including New York, New Jersey and Maryland. Global sales exceeded the 10,000 unit milestone in January 2016, with Europe as the leading market with 6,770 units sold. Germany was the leading European market with 3,853 units sold through December 2015.

A second generation was introduced in 2019 for the 2020 model year, sold in both Europe and Canada. It was delayed until 2021 for the US market.

Common 2017 Kia Soul ev problems

The Kia Soul EV, particularly the 2017 model, has been subject to several recalls due to various issues. One of the most significant problems is the roll-away risk, which can occur even if the vehicle is in Park mode. This issue is caused by the intermittent failure of the parking pawl in the Gear Drive Unit (GDU), which can be triggered by damage sustained to the parking mechanism. This problem has been known since July 2020, and Kia has been working on a solution since then. As of December 2023, 6,262 Kia Soul EV models are affected by this recall, including those manufactured between July 15, 2014, and September 28, 2018.

Another issue reported by owners is the malfunctioning sunroof, which has been a persistent problem in the 2017 Kia Soul Plus 2.0-L 4 Cyl model. One owner reported that the sunroof has never worked reliably and required a repair cost of $1,230. However, the owner decided to close it manually instead.

The Kia Soul EV has also been subject to theft, with one owner reporting that their vehicle was stolen. The owner expressed concern about the ease of stealing a Kia Soul EV and called for a recall to address this issue and reimburse them for the expenses incurred.

In addition to these issues, the Kia Soul EV has been subject to other recalls. For instance, Kate Walton-Elliott's Soul EV was recalled for a battery recall, which was not fixed correctly the first time, leading to a recall for the recall. This issue can result in unintended vehicle movement when the gear shift is in Park mode and the parking brake is not applied while the vehicle is powered on

Overall, the Kia Soul EV has had several issues that have affected its reliability and safety. While the simplicity of the powertrain in electric vehicles generally makes them more reliable than internal combustion engine vehicles, the Kia Soul EV has had its share of problems. However, it's important to note that Kia has been proactive in addressing these issues and issuing recalls to ensure the safety and satisfaction of its customers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-06
  • VIN: KNDJX3AE7H7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Application of the brakes causes complete vehicle shutdown along with message to check electrical system. Brakes appear to fail for a brief moment, then mechanical brakes kick in. Car has zero power until stopped and restarted. Problem is reproducible a high percentage of the time provided the brakes are pressed more than just lightly or briefly. At nearly full charge, this defect can also be triggered by just the engine brake (which is triggered every time your foot is taken off the accelerator). Appears to be an electrical short circuit of some type. Other faults occur upon application of power, shifting engine into low power or turtle mode at any level of battery charge.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
  • VIN: KNDJX3AE9H7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The 2017 Kia Soul EV+ vehicle turned off coming down a steep hill (at the bottom of the steep hill is both a school bus stop and and entrance/exit to a condominium community). When the car shut off all power steering and power brakes were lost, making control of the vehicle very difficult and unsafe. The dealer reported finding a code for the battery overcharging but cleared the code and did not offer any explanation. This has happened multiple times including when I was videotaping the dash to document irregular discharge occurring from the battery. Similarly the vehicle will be driving fine (at any speed) and suddenly lose power and only go 20mph (known as limp mode), a very dangerous situation driving at highway speed and then trying to avoid an accident due to sudden vehicle deceleration. This problem started occurring after a Battery Management System patch was applied by the dealer for a Kia Recall related to battery safety (overheating and fire issue) in July 2023. Upon pickup from the dealer it was immediately evident the car still had the rapid battery discharge issue and this was further documented with Kia USA case #[XXX]. The next dealer was able to reproduce the excess power discharge problem in November and after 3 weeks I was told a battery replacement would be provided per the 10yr/100K warranty the vehicle carries (my vehicle has less than 50K on the odometer). Since November there is no time estimate on when the battery will be replaced. It would appear that the Battery Management System patch (applied to my car in July) and to many other Kia Soul EVs, somehow damages the battery as there are now hundreds of Kia Soul EVs awaiting battery replacement across both the United States and Canada and no promise of when a replacement battery will be forthcoming and it appears Kia has no solution for the BMS issue at this time. Kia says it will refund up to $39.40/day car rental cost AFTER the warranty work is completed (more $ out of my pocket)! ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
  • VIN: KNDJX3AE1H7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: This is an update of the below. I have had several email exchanges with Kia Customer Service. They contacted the dealer and report that they could not get a response from their own dealer! They said I could try another dealer if I want. I asked for a recommendation of a dealer that would be responsive and got no further communication. Meanwhile, my car continues to show low charging pattern, which the recall warns is a symptom of a fault. ====================================== Received an "Important Safety Recall" notice from Kia recall number 23v218 in May 2023. This indicates my Kia Soul EV by VIN. The notice warns of a possible short in the main battery that can cause a fire. The notice says Kia is working on a remedy and that another letter will follow when the remedy is ready. No second letter yet, as of 9/13/23. The recall notice states that if in the meantime owner experiences "incomplete high voltage battery charging, loss/fluctuating vehicle EV battery range" to seek assistance from nearest authorized Kia dealership. My vehicle experienced rapid decrease in range, down below 60% of the full range over a period of weeks. Most recently charging the vehicle (using two different chargers) causes the circuit breaker at my home to trip, something that has never happened before. I contacted Kia America by phone and email. They said I should take the car to the dealer. At the dealer I describe the problem, show the recall notice. They say they cannot execute a remedy and that in order to have the battery checked I need to leave the car with them indefinitely. Service said some cars have been waiting 6 weeks for a diagnostic. So I have a recall notice, my car is experiencing a warning symptom, and I cannot get the dealer or Kia to take reasonable action.

  • VIN: KNDJX3AE5H7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2017 KIA Soul EV battery has not been holding a full charge since the beginning of April. The dealer was notified in early May that the charges were seeming to cut off early & provided with a log of charging/driving. We waited, then were told that a replacement battery would be ordered, installed, & considered under warranty. Diagnostic tests were run, we were advised. We were told that the car was safe to drive, although with about 50% of the mileage available (50-51 miles). The final paperwork (vehicle registr.) copy was filed on May 18. Now we have received a safety recall notice. I am afraid to drive the car, having seen news of what loss of life can happen a fire breaks out while driving! My dealer has not offered me help with an interim rental car to date, although I have requested this several times, specifically yesterday - June 6, 2023. At this writing, I have been told that "the battery is on order, however, no specific info on shipment date or date expected" is available. "It will come on the barge," was the last statement, hard to believe in this day & age of electronic records. I have stopped driving the car, have talked with my insurance company, & will call the dealership again about the matter. I am most unsatisfied. I have a record of numerous calls back & forth with my KIA dealer, service dept. manager.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-11
  • VIN: KNDJX3AE3H7
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY ALL ELECTRIC HAS A B MODE TO SHIFT IN. SIMPLY PUT IT ENGAGES THE GENERATOR FULLY WHEN YOU LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL SO YOU CAN GENERATE ELECTRICITY. HOWEVER, WHEN YOU DO THIS THE CAR BRAKES QUITE QUICK, SO QUICK IN FACT THEY CALL THIS TYPE OF DRIVING ONE PEDAL DRIVING DUE TO THE FACT YOU VERY SELDOM TOUCH THE BREAK EXCEPT FOR A FULL STOP. THE PROBLEM IS THE BREAK LIGHTS DON'T GO ON UNLESS YOU PUT YOUR FOOT ON THE BREAK. MY CONCERN IS THE CAR BEHIND ME. IF HE IS NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND DOES NOT REALIZE I AM SLOWING DOWN AT SUCH A RAPID CLIP BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN, ITS ALMOST THE SAME AS HAVING DEFECTIVE BRAKE LIGHTS. MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO HAVE THE BREAK LIGHTS COME ON WHEN YOU FOOT IS FULLY OFF THE GAS PEDAL TO AVOID AND REAR END COLLISIONS FOR ALL CARS THAT HAVE THIS FEATURE. THANK YOU

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-09
  • VIN: KNDJX3AE3H7
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE LOCKED DOORS CAN BE OPENED WHEN DRIVING. THIS IS AN ALL ELECTRIC VEHICLE WITH NO KEY TO REMOVE FROM THE IGNITION AND NO NOISE FROM THE ENGINE AND VIRTUALLY NO FEED BACK THAT THE CAR IS RUNNING EXCEPT BY LOOKING AT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. I PULLED INTO A CONVENIENCE STORE PARKING LOT AND WAS DISCUSSING WITH MY WIFE WHO WAS TO GO INTO THE STORE. HER DECISION WAS I HAD TO GO INTO THE STORE. WITH OUT THINKING AND WITHOUT PUSHING THE BUTTON TO SHUT OFF THE CAR. I OPENED THE LOCKED DOOR AND STARTED GETTING OUT WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING AND IN DRIVE. LUCKY I WAS QUICK ENOUGH TO GET IN AND STOP THE CAR. YES I SHOULD AND WILL BE MORE CAREFUL BUT I FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS HAZARD THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THE IRONY OF THE THING IS WHEN YOU START DRIVING THE DOORS LOCK, AND WHEN YOU PUT IT IN PARK THEY UNLOCK. A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY BUT AT LEAST YOU KNOW WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH A ROBBER CAN'T RUN UP TO THE CAR AND GET IN. I THINK ALL EV'S SHOULD HAVE LOCKS THAT DON'T UNLOCK UNTIL YOU PUT THE CAR IN PARK THANK YOU.

Negative 2017 Kia Soul ev car reviews

  1. Zion Friesen 2024-06-15

The 2017 model may not be the best fit for everyone. However, I have found that with regular charging, it meets my needs well. While I have experienced a slight decrease in mileage after six months, I have found it to be a reliable vehicle overall. Although I have expressed my concerns to Kia, I have not received a response. I believe that this car can be a great fit for many people, but it is important to consider individual driving habits and needs.

  2. Diamond Aufderhar 2024-05-29

After bringing our Soul home, we noticed some clear oily liquid all over the area where we parked our KIA. We immediately contacted our dealer, who unfortunately told us that it was impossible since the Soul-ev did not use any oil. However, we took the car in and they were stumped. They asked us to leave the car in for a few days to evaluate the situation. It has now been in the agency for five (5) days and when we called to check today, we were informed that the car had a leak of some sort and they did not know from where. My wife agreed to wait for a call back and we are still waiting. Meanwhile, my beautiful paved stone driveway has oil damage to it and my car is still in the shop. I can only give it three (3) stars for reliability. It's worth noting that obtaining parts can take a while, and the dealer's favorite saying is

Positive 2017 Kia Soul ev car reviews

  1. Deron Torphy 2024-07-19

I drove a Nissan Leaf for three years before getting my new Soul EV+ last month, and so far, I'm really enjoying it. This is my second all-electric vehicle, and while it has some key differences from the Leaf, I really appreciate the positive aspects of it. Unfortunately, the cargo space isn't nearly as capacious as that in a Leaf, and the hatchback release on the key fob only releases the hatchback, which can be a bit annoying when I have to unlock the doors after I've already unlocked the hatch. However, the extended range is noticeably better than my 2013 Leaf, and the driver-only AC, as well as the ventilated seats, are huge energy savers. The UVO EV Services are functional, if not entirely well-executed, and I do wish I could exit the car with it turned on without it beeping as loudly and for as long as it does. Some volume and duration control would be much appreciated. The ride quality is sporty, and it handles excellently on both city and highway roads. Parking is quicker since the backend isn't as extended as the Leaf. I'm excited to take it on our first extended trip to the coast this weekend!

  2. Laverne Kovacek 2024-06-05

We purchased our 2015 Kia Soul EV in April 2020 during our COVID-19 quarantine (with plenty of time to shop around). We use it for all our local travel, while still keeping our 2006 Toyota Avalon for long day trips. We're thrilled to report that we've reduced our monthly gas expenses to just $40, and we haven't seen a significant increase in our electric bill. This has been one of our best purchases, or should we say investments. We're excited to see where our EV journey takes us!

  3. Ezra Schiller 2024-03-26

I'm so glad to hear that you love your car! It's great to know that it's roomy and versatile with the split seats. It's also fantastic that you don't have to worry about 'range anxiety' and that charging it overnight is much more convenient than stopping at a gas station. Plus, it's great to hear that your electricity bills haven't increased significantly either.
