Isuzu Vehicross problems

The Isuzu VehiCROSS is a compact SUV from Isuzu. Produced from 1997 through 2001 (Japanese market 1997–1999; US market 1999–2001), it shares many of its components with the Trooper, including both its 3.2 L and 3.5 L V6 engine that produces 215 bhp (160 kW; 218 PS) at 5400 rpm and 230 lb⋅ft (312 N⋅m) of torque at 3000 rpm. The vehicle also features the Torque on Demand (TOD) 4-wheel-drive system produced by BorgWarner. It is a small, sporty 2-door crossover vehicle with aggressive external styling, including short overhangs, an aggressive forward stance, titanium "teeth" in the grille, a black hood-insert, and black plastic cladding over the entire lower half of the vehicle. The US VehiCROSS came equipped with 16" polished wheels in 1999 and 18" chrome wheels during the remainder of production. The Japanese version came equipped with 16" alloys with chrome center caps.
The VehiCROSS combined a computer-controlled AWD system for on-road driving and a low-gear 4WD system for off-road driving. The Japanese version offered a 2WD non TOD or 4WD TOD option. The US-only constant 4WD TOD, with 12 independent sensors for detecting wheel spin and capable of redirecting power to the wheels with the most traction, gives the VehiCROSS a high level of traction on wet and icy roads. It also has a high level of performance for its height. While possessing on-road nimbleness, its body-on-frame truck construction, suspension and 4WD gearing make it very capable off-road.
Sales were intentionally limited, with only 5,958 vehicles being produced between 1997 and 2001; 1,805 were produced for the domestic Japanese market and the remaining 4,153 sold in the United States. It appears that Isuzu revisited a limited production approach they used in the mid-1960s with the dramatic 117 Coupe and the later Isuzu Piazza to produce an exclusive two door vehicle. Japanese sales were limited by the fact that the exterior width dimensions were not in compliance with Japanese Government dimension regulations, and the engine displacement obligated Japanese drivers for higher levels of annual road tax. The vehicle had a base price of $28,900.

Common Isuzu Vehicross problems
Sure, I'd be happy to help you with that! Here are some common problems with Isuzu Vehicross cars based on complaints from owners:
- Engine stalling: Some Isuzu Vehicross owners have reported issues with the engine stalling while driving. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty ignition coils, dirty fuel injectors, or a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor. In some cases, the issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty part, while in other cases, a more extensive repair may be required.
- Transmission problems: The Isuzu Vehicross is known for having some transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission. Some owners have reported difficulty shifting gears, slipping between gears, and even complete transmission failure. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn out gears, or a faulty solenoid.
- Suspension issues: The Isuzu Vehicross has a unique suspension system that is designed to provide a smooth and comfortable ride. However, some owners have reported issues with the suspension, including excessive bouncing, bottoming out, and even broken suspension components. These issues can be caused by worn out shocks or struts, damaged suspension bushings, or a misaligned suspension system.
- Electrical problems: Some Isuzu Vehicross owners have reported issues with the electrical system, including blown fuses, malfunctioning lights, and even complete electrical failure. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty alternator, corroded wiring, or a malfunctioning battery.
- Brake issues: The Isuzu Vehicross has a powerful brake system that is designed to provide excellent stopping power. However, some owners have reported issues with the brakes, including brake fade, squeaking, and even complete brake failure. These issues can be caused by worn out brake pads, damaged brake rotors, or a malfunctioning brake master cylinder.
It's important to note that not all Isuzu Vehicross cars will experience these issues, and many owners have reported that their vehicles have been reliable and trouble-free. However, if you are considering purchasing an Isuzu Vehicross, it's important to be aware of these common issues and to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.
How rare is an Isuzu VehiCROSS?
As Hagerty writes, while just 5,958 VehiCROSS SUVs were ever built between 1997 and 2001, the rarity of these vehicles wasn't because nobody wanted them. In 1993, Isuzu unveiled the VX concept. In typical concept fashion, the VX was a bold, futuristic off-roader that you might think wouldn't ever come into production.

- Date Of Incident: 2005-02-07
- Date Complaint: 2006-02-07
- VIN: JACCN57X4X7
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I OWN A 1999 ISUZU VEHICROSS WITH 107,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS NEVER GIVEN TROUBLE UNTIL NOW. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN METICULOUS ABOUT OIL CHANGES EVERY 3,000 MILES IF NOT SOONER. I HAD AN COMPLETE OIL CHANGE 2 WEEKS AGO. YESTERDAY SAW OIL LIGHT FLICKERING AND ADDED 2 QTS OIL IMMEDIATELY. DROVE A COUPLE BLOCKS AND SAW OIL LIGHT FLICKERING AGAIN. PULLED INTO GARAGE AND THEY SAID "BONE DRY"! ADDED 3.5 QTS OIL RIGHT THEN. DROVE LESS THAN 1 MILE ONTO EXPRESSWAY ENTRY RAMP- CAR STOPPED DEAD RIGHT THERE! - I COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN KILLED BY SEMI BEARING DOWN BEHIND ME AT 55 MPH. LUCKILY I ESCAPED WITH MY LIFE BUT IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED ANYWHERE: ON THE EXPRESSWAY FOR EXAMPLE AND I WOULD TODAY BE DEAD. CAUSE: SEIZED ENGINE FROM LACK OF OIL. TWO WEEKS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE AND ONLY AN HOUR AFTER 5.5 QTS OIL HAD BEEN ADDED: BONE DRY AGAIN. I'M TOLD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR ISUZU OWNERS AND THAT THE COMPANY DOES NOT STAND BEHIND WHAT THEY MAKE. I TOLD ISUZU ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY REFUSE TO ASSIST ME. COST OF NEW ENGINE TO ME: $5,500! I HAVE LOAN ON THIS CAR FOR $6,600 ALREADY AND CANNOT AFFORD TO PUT IN A NEW ENGINE. THE CONSUMER IS AGAIN LEFT STRAPPED TO DEAL WITH THIS FAULT MANUFACTURING. THIS NEEDS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL. *NM

- Summary: I OWN A 2000 VEHICROSS BY ISUZU WHICH WAS PURCHASED NEW. BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOWS HAVE HAD TO BE REPAIRED DUE TO FAILURE OF THE TRACK ALIGNMENT. UPON COMING IN CONTACT WITH AN ORGANIZATION OF SEVERAL HUNDRED VEHICROSS ENTHUSIASTS I DISCOVERED THAT THIS TYPE OF WINDOW FAILURE IS EPIDEMIC WITH THIS MODEL CAR. SOME OF THE OWNERS HAVE HAD MULTIPLE FAILURES -- I.E., THE WINDOWS HAVE BEEN FIXED ONLY TO FAIL AGAIN, SOMETIMES THREE OR FOUR TIMES. AT THE MOMENT I HAVE 27,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND NOW THE PASSENGER'S SIDE I HAVE CONTACTED ISUZU BUT THEY DENY THERE IS A PROBLEM. SINCE THERE WAS A LIMITED DISTRIBUTION OF THIS PARTICULAR MODEL CAR -- SOMEWHERE IN THE AREA OF 4000 PLUS OVER A FOUR YEAR PERIOD -- IT APPEARS THE WINDOW FAILURE RATE IS A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THAT TOTAL NUMBER. I WOULD ASK THAT THE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM, INCLUDING INVESTIGATION OF THE INTERNAL ISUZU DOCUMENT MENTIONED ABOVE. IF THERE IS, AS IT APPEARS, A DESIGN FLAW IN THE WINDOW MECHANISM, THEN THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF VEHICROSS OWNERS WHO HAVE IMPROPERLY BEEN CHARGED TO REPAIR IT, SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES. *JB

AT WWW.VEHICROSS.INFO ALL THE OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. ISUZU IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT THEIR DEALERSHIPS DO NOT SEEM TO EVER FIX THE PROBLEM NOR DO THEY HONOR IT AS A WARRANTY ISSUE. - Date Of Incident: 2004-05-01
- Date Complaint: 2005-12-13
- VIN: JACCN57X117
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: I OWN TWO 2001 ISUZU VEHICROSS'S. I BOUGHT THEM USED 1 AND 2 YEARS AGO, RESPECTIVELY. MY FIRST ONE WAS PURCHASED WITH 11,000 MILES ON IT, AND THE SECOND ONE WITH 36,000 MILES ON IT. UPON PURCHASE OF MY FIRST ONE, THE POWER WINDOW MECHANISM ON BOTH SIDES HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A FAILURE OF THE TRACK ALIGNMENT. I'M SEEING SIMILAR ISSUES WITH MY SECOND VEHICROSS AS WELL. MY FIRST VEHICROSS WAS FIXED BY A DEALER, UNDER WARRANTY, ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS. AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN OUT, THE ISSUE AGAIN PRESENTED ITSELF, AND I HAD TO PAY OVER $600 TO GET THE ISSUE FIXED. EVEN THEN, THE ISSUE REAPPEARED AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS. MY SECOND VEHICROSS HAS THE SAME EXACT ISSUES WITH THE WINDOW BINDING, AND TRACK MISALIGNMENT, CAUSING THE MOTORS TO WEAR. I HAVE CONTACTED ISUZU BUT THEY DENY THERE IS A PROBLEM. ON THE OTHER HAND I UNDERSTAND THERE ARE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS BY ISUZU THAT DO RECOGNIZE THIS PROBLEM. - Summary: I OWN A 2001 ISUZU VEHICROSS AND WOULD LIKE ISUZU TO OWN UP TO A DESIGN FLAW. I HAVE HAD THIS FIXED 3 TIMES WHILE UNDER WARRANTY AND THE PROBLEM COMES RIGHT BACK SOON AFTER THEY REPLACE THE "WINDOW REGULATOR". AT THE MOMENT BOTH OF MY WINDOWS ARE UNABLE TO ROLL UP WITHOUT MY ASSISTANCE. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM IN THE COLD OF ALASKA AS IF I NEED TO ROLL MY PASSENGER WINDOW DOWN I NEED TO LEAN INTO THE PASSENGER SEAT IN ORDER TO ROLL IT UP AND I FIND MYSELF DOING THIS AT UNWANTED/UNSAFE TIMES DUE TO THE COLD. ALSO IF A FRIEND IS IN THE CAR THEY TEND TO SMASH THEIR FINGERS IN THE WINDOW WHEN PULLING IT UP. I AM SICK OF ISUZU SAYING THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT.... IT IS OBVIOUSLY A DESIGN FLAW AS EVERY VEHICROSS I HAVE EVER SEEN HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM!!!!!!!!! AND AS FOR THE INCIDENT DATE THIS HAS HAPPENED FIVE TIMES (SINCE DATE I SAID WAS THE INCIDENT) SO THERE IS NOT JUST A SINGLE INCIDENT. *JB

- Summary: MY 1999 ISUZU VEHICROSS HAS FAULTY WINDOW REGULATORS AND TRACKS. THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE. THE POWER MOTORS STRAIN TO POSITION THE WINDOWS IN THEIR "CLOSED" LOCATION. I NOW HAVE TO TAKE MY HAND OFF THE STEERING WHEEL TO ASSIST THE MOTORS IN GETTING THE WINDOWS UP. IN MY OPINION THE FAULTY POWER WINDOW HARDWARE AND DESIGN MAKES FOR A HAZARDOUS SITUATION WHILE DRIVING. I KNOW OF SEVERAL OTHERS WHO OWN THIS MAKE AND MODEL AND HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS BUT ON A MORE SEVERE SCALE REQUIRING MULTIPLE REPAIRS COSTING 100'S OF DOLLARS EACH TIME. *JB

- Summary: I AM LEASING A 2000 ISUZU VEHICROSS. I HAVE HAD THE POWER WINDOWS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAR EITHER BIND OR DROP DOWN IN BETWEEN THE DOOR. ONCE EVEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING. FORTUNATELY FOR ME MY WARRANTY HAS BEEN COVERING THIS DEFECT, BUT IT SEEMS THAT THE "REPAIR" DOES NOT LAST TOO LONG. I THINK MUCH OF IT HAS TO DO WITH A CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE.THE FIRST TIMEBOTH WINDOWS WERE EFFECTED AND I WAS AT ABOUT 26,000 MILES.THEN 36,000, 40,000 AND JUST RECENTLY (6/2005) AT 69,000 MILES FOR JUST THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW. I'M SURE THE DRIVER'S SIDE IS ABOUT DUE TO HAPPEN AGAIN SO I THOUGHT I WOULD FILE THIS COMPLAINT NOW. I HAVE BEEN IN COMMUNICATION WITH MANY VEHICROSS OWNERS THAT HAD TO PAY FOR THEIR OWN REPAIRS AND THIS IS NOT FAIR. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE BEEN LUCKY THANKS TO MY WARRANTY; I STILL WISH TO FILE A COMPLAINT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!

I commute 90 miles each way from 10,000 ft to 5,000 ft daily. The VC is a tank in snow and is smooth and secure on the road. I've put 79,000 miles on it without any major mechanical problems. It does tend to use oil, but keeping the fuel system clean can help minimize consumption. I get 18-20 MPG, which is pretty good. The torque on demand 4WD is great, but switching to 2WD would improve gas mileage. The handling is superb and acceleration is very good. The seat comfort is excellent, but access to the back seats is a bit inadequate, especially for adults. Although it's capable off-road, the ride on rough roads can be a bit jarring. The visibility to the back is not great, but overall, I really love this car. In fact, I'm planning to put in a rebuilt engine when the time comes because there's nothing that can match it.

The Vehicross may be seen as an in-your-face fashion statement by some, but underneath its exterior lies a heart that can handle even the toughest terrains. As someone who has worked as an Expedition Guide in Africa for several years, I have travelled on some of the continent's worst roads year-round, from Cape Town in the south all the way up to Egypt, through deserts and jungles that make the Darienne Gap look like a normal workday in the rainy season. In my experience, Isuzu and Toyota are the kings of durability and reliability, regardless of what Landrover's spin doctors may say. I once drove an Isuzu 2300 miles in just 48 hours, and it was an absolute pleasure, even on the blacktop. It's a pity to see the Vehicross in captivity and out of production, as it's like a (stubby) pig in mud out there.

I really enjoyed driving the VX. The handling was great on road as well as off. In town, I learned to rely on my side mirrors more than the center rear view because of the lower visibility. I installed an aftermarket air filter by Calmini which increased the power and gas mileage and I would advise anyone else to add it on. The overall feel is like having a car built around your favorite, most comfortable chair.

Your VehiCross sounds like an amazing vehicle! With over 140K miles and 102K driven over the last 4.5 years, it's impressive that you haven't had any reliability issues. Living at 10,000 ft in the Colorado Rockies, it's great to hear that it handles snow so well. The Recaro racing seats sound like they provide extreme comfort and support on long drives. It's clear that Isuzu engineering was excellent, and it's too bad they are no longer around. Currently owning 3 Isuzu SUVs is a testament to their ruggedness and reliability.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you our experience with the 1999 VX. We recently purchased it to replace our old 4runner and we couldn't be happier with our decision. We had seen the VX when it first came out but had forgotten about it until we stumbled upon one at a car show. It was love at first sight! The car has so much character and drives like a sports car, yet it's extremely comfortable and performs great in 4x4 and snow. Of course, there are some minor drawbacks such as the rear view, but that's an easy fix with a back-up camera and learning to turn your head. We also had to replace the 6-disk CD changer with a cup holder, but that's a small price to pay for such a great car. The sunroof does limit headroom slightly, but it's not a big issue if you lean the seats back a bit. The only other thing to note is that there's not much toe room for the front passenger under the dash. It's hard to believe that the design is 9 years old! We absolutely love our V-CROSS and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and fun car.

I leased this car for almost 4 years and loved its looks and design. However, with the recent increase in gas prices, it has become difficult to keep it running. After purchasing a sedan, I realized that the ride in the VehiCross isn't as comfortable as I had imagined. Although it always turns heads, it's not the best for long distances and you may need a back heating pad. Overall, it was a fun car to drive and definitely a head-turner!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 1999 VehiCross with you. When it first came out, my family and I were really excited to get one because it looked so unique and different from anything else on the market. While it definitely turns heads, we did find that it wasn't the most practical car out there. The cargo area was a bit small and the back seats weren't very comfortable. Additionally, we found that visibility was a bit of an issue, which made us a bit nervous on the road. However, we still enjoyed driving it around town. Unfortunately, we did run into some engine issues a few months ago, which was a bit of a bummer. But overall, we still have fond memories of our time with the VehiCross. Thanks for listening!

Hey there! I noticed that the Vehicross could use some improvement in the 4-wheel drive department. While it may not be the most useful on-road, it has been performing great off-road!

I fell in love with the VX when I first saw it back in 2000, so when I came across one while car shopping, I knew my decision was instantly made. Now that I have been the owner of a coveted silver Isuzu VX for over a year, I have mixed feelings about her... By the way, her name is Twiggy, named after the sexy little robot from the old Buck Rogers TV show.
