Hyundai Ioniq electric problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.

The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.

From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.

Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

Common Hyundai Ioniq electric problems

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric has been a popular choice among EV enthusiasts due to its affordability and efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints and investigations.

  • Risk of Power Relay Fire: Some Ioniq Electric vehicles may suffer from a faulty power relay that could, in extreme circumstances, catch fire. Hyundai dealers are to replace the power relay and inspect the power cable and relay assembly for any damage and replace if necessary.
  • EV Charging Issues: Several owners have reported issues with EV charging, including problems with battery warming and pre-conditioning, slow charging speeds, and issues with charging ports and connections.
  • Software and Electrical Problems: Complaints have been made about software and electrical issues, such as occasional 12-volt battery death, which seems to be worse if the car is parked with less than about 20% remaining traction battery charge.
  • Noises and Leaks: Owners have reported various noises and leaks, including issues with the AC, ABS sensor, and cabin air filter. While these issues may not be unique to the Ioniq Electric, they are still concerns that owners have faced.

Despite these issues, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric has a relatively good reliability record, with most problems being fixed under warranty according to participants in reliability surveys. It is essential to stay informed about any recalls or issues related to your specific model and address them promptly to ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

Hyundai Ioniq electric 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-21
  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-25
  • VIN: KMHC05LH2HU
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The steering is "sticky" causing the vehicle to zig-zag, rather than track straight, especially at highway speeds. If you take your eyes off the road for a second, the vehicle will veer into other lanes. It requires constant vigilance beyond what is required for normal driving to remian in your lane. This is a well-documented issue online involving the ball bearings and lubrication of the intermediate shaft of the steering column.
Hyundai Ioniq electric 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-14
  • Date Complaint: 2023-05-19
  • VIN: KMHC75LHXHU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Just before 3 PM on Sunday, 14MAY, my Hyundai Ioniq had been charging for a few hours as usual and I heard a circuit breaker "pop". I went outside to check on my car, and my car had started smoking. I immediately unplugged the charger and after the smoke cleared, found that both the charger I purchased months ago and the charge port on the Ioniq had melted. This rendered both items unusable. This is available for inspection. If I had not been home while the car was charging, if the car was inside, or if this had happened at any public charging station, this could of course cause any number of issues, from fire, to being exposed to the carcinogens of the burning/smoking plastics of the port and charger. The vehicle has been inspected by a GEICO insurance adjuster as well as Annapolis Hyundai.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-16
  • Date Complaint: 2021-12-30
  • VIN: KMHC05LH8KU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The 12v system in my vehicle is defective, resulting in the vehicle failing to operate. Since I have only operated it about 4 times, i am unable to state whether the issue would occur while the car was being driven. I have had the car checked by the dealer twice, and it is now at the service department with an unknown date for "repair". The diagnosis from the second dealer service department directly conflicts with what the first dealer service department said. Additionally, I have discovered that this is a known issue with this vehicle model, and Hyundai has failed to address it. I have filed a formal complaint with Hyundai, as the vehicle is still under manufacturers warranty. Incidentally, there is a newly issued recall that I suspect is related to the 12v system, as well.

  • Date Complaint: 2021-11-05
  • VIN: KMHC75LD2KU

  • Summary: I have put around 31K miles in my car. Day before yesterday ( Nov-2 ) when I was driving back home from work, suddenly I heard a noise. I pulled over and stopped the car. when I got down and checked, I noticed exhaust system or something similar to that fell off and touching the road. I have seen similar issues posted in Hyundai Ioniq forums https://www.ioniqforum.com/threads/very-dissapointed.37027/ https://www.ioniqforum.com/threads/first-issue-exhaust-fell-off-at-21k-miles-2019-phev.35092/ I will attach few pictures that I took during this incident.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-16
  • Date Complaint: 2021-09-16
  • VIN: KMHC75LH3KU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When ABS engages briefly on a wet surface, there is an incomplete transition from regenerative braking to friction brakes, resulting in a hard pedal that does not actually engage the brakes. This is very dangerous and I have experienced this loss of braking force multiple times when stopping in the rain and a tire is on a slippery manhole cover or crosswalk line. Braking force is reduced significantly for a second or two until the friction brakes are engaged. If the vehicle is rolling in Neutral, the friction brakes work as designed with no delay. It is only during normal driving when the regenerative braking is involved that this issue can be replicated.

  • Summary: The traction battery on my Ioniq 2020 went bad after 3 months. The diagnostic panel warned me of an electric issue and the range dropped drastically. The dealer changed the battery no questions asked. My vin wasn't part of the recall. I wonder if the recall should have included a broader range of vehicles.

  • Summary: THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO COMPLAINT NUMBER 1# 1360258 SUBMITTED IN SEPT. IN PARTICULAR, I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE DEALERS REPLACE A WATER PUMP AND RELATED ASSEMBLIES FOR A TOTAL OF 3 REPLACEMENTS SINCE AUG. THIS WAS THEIR EFFORT TO DEAL WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ISSUES THAT HAVE RESULTED CONTINUED INCIDENTS OF ERRATIC AND UNCONTROLLED APPLICATION OF THE REGENERATIVE BREAKING (NOT BY DRIVER), SHUTTING OFF OF ANY ABILITY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WHILE DRIVING, AND COMPLETE SHUTOFFS OF THE CAR WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAYS, I.E. ALL LIGHTS OFF, NO RESPONSE FROM INSTRUMENTS EXCEPT FOR BREAKING TO A STOP. I REALIZE YOU MAY BE SHORT HANDED DEALING WITH COMPLAINTS, BUT I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY CONTACT SINCE FIRST REPORTING THIS AND WAS WONDERING IF I SHOULD EXPECT ANY? OR IS THIS ONLY ONCE YOU HAVE SO MANY RELATED COMPLAINTS TO INVESTIGATE? OR PERHAPS YOU NEED SOME MORE VERIFIABLE DOCUMENTATION OF THE EVENTS? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-15
  • Date Complaint: 2020-09-21
  • VIN: KMHC75LH5KU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD 4 INCIDENTS SO FAR OVER THE LAST MONTH, ALL LASTING UNDER 5 SECONDS. IN EACH CASE, THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SWITCHES TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM THE USER. THIS PRESENTS AS WHAT FEELS LIKE A LEVEL 3 (STRONG) BRAKING WHEN NONE WAS ON AND NO FOOT IS NEAR THE BRAKE, OR IF THE REGEN BRAKING WAS TURNED ON (IN ONE CASE TO LEVEL 1), IT SHUTS OFF MOMENTARILY. DURING THESE INCIDENTS, THE BEHAVIOR IS ALSO IRREGULARLY CHANGING BETWEEN FOR EXAMPLE HARD BREAKING (LEVEL 3) FOR A SECOND AND THEN FLUTTERING IRREGULARLY BETWEEN HARD AND LOW LEVELS. IN ONE INCIDENT, THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF (AND STAYED IN NEUTRAL) AFTER AN INCIDENT HAPPENED WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THE CAR THEN GLIDED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AS NORMAL. IN EACH CASE, THE INCIDENT OCCURS WHILE IN MOTION, NOT TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT MAY BE CURRENTLY SET ON DIFFERENT LEVELS OF REGEN BRAKING (IT'S HAPPENED BOTH IN LEVEL 0 (NONE) AND 1 (LOW). THE BEHAVIOUR IS NOT HOWEVER TRIGGER BY MANALLY CHANGING THE REGEN LEVEL BUT SEEMS TO JUST SPONTANEOUSLY HAPPEN WHILE SMOOTH DRIVING. MOST CASES OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS BUT ONE OCCURRED ON A SMOOTH HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 60MPH. NONE OF THE INCIDENTS HAVE CREATED AN ACCIDENT AS I WAS NOT VERY CLOSE TO ANY CAR IN ANY CASE. I DO HAVE TWO INVOICES FROM SEPARATE CAR DEALERS LOOKING AT THE PROBLEM. IN THE FIRST CASE, THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ERROR CODES BUT THEY FOUND THE WATER PUMP WAS LEAKING AND REPLACED THAT (PER A TSB). FOLLOWING ANOTHER INCIDENT I TOOK IT TO A SECOND DEALER WHO ALSO DID NOT SEE AN ERROR CODE NOR COULD FIND A PROBLEM. THIS, EVEN AFTER THE "EV" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON FOR A FULL DRIVE TWO DAYS PREVIOUS.

  • Date Complaint: 2020-08-31
  • VIN: KMHC85LH9HU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: IF YOU ARE SLOWING DOWN WHILE REGENERATING, THEN NEED TO SPEED UP YOU CAN'T. THE ACTIVE FLAP SYSTEM LIGHT COMES ON AND MAKES THE CAR GO INTO A LIMP MODE. IT CORRECTS ITSELF ABOUT A SECOND OR MORE. HAVING TO SPEED UP FOR THE LIGHT THAT WAS RED AND NOW GREEN CREATED A DANGEROUS SITUATION. I COULDN'T GO.

HOW MANY OTHER BUYERS WERE MISLED BY THE WINDOW STICKER AND SOLD A CAR WITH MORE EXTENSIVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT THAN WHAT THEY ACTUALLY RECEIVED? SHOULD HYUNDAI RECALL THE VEHICLE TO INSTALL THE DEVICES AS ADVERTISED AND SOLD OR REIMBURSE THE BUYERS FOR THE DIFFERENCE AND THE LESSER VALUE CAR SOLD? MY CAR WAS STATIONARY AND NO MALFUNCTION KNOWN YET, BUT LACK OF ASSIST FUNCTION MAKES THE CAR LESS SAFE THAN REPRESENTED WHEN SOLD TO ME.
