Eagle was a brand of the Chrysler Corporation following the purchase of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987 and marketed through the end of the 1998 model year. It was aimed at the enthusiast driver and promoted as more "European" than the automaker's similar models.

Chrysler took the "Eagle" name from the four-wheel drive AMC Eagle models that were introduced for the 1980 model year. This was the last of American Motors' wholly U.S.-designed vehicles and one of the first modern mass-production crossover vehicles. The Eagle name also appeared on several Jeep trim packages and unique models that included the J-10 pickup trucks, the wide-track Cherokee SJ, as well as the CJ-5 and CJ-7 models starting in 1976. American Motors also launched an entirely new front-wheel-drive sedan, the Eagle Premier that was developed with Renault, AMC's French partner before Chrysler purchased AMC.

Various imported and domestic-built vehicles were marketed, primarily by former AMC dealers along with Jeep products, until the brand was discontinued in 1998. The 1993 through 1997 Eagle Vision sedan sold in respectable numbers, with 115,699 built, while the sporty Eagle Talons were made in two generations from 1990 until 1998, with more than 200,000 produced. Most significantly, the Eagle Premier was the basis for Chrysler's successful series of "LH" models that were introduced for 1993.

Common 1986 Chrysler Eagle problems

The Chrysler Eagle 1986, also known as the AMC Eagle, is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners.

  1. Design and Style Issues: The Eagle's design was often criticized for being behind the times, with a somewhat baffling concept of a 4wd passenger car that was classified as a Light-Duty Truck by the EPA and a Multi-Purpose Vehicle by NHTSA, exempting it from some safety requirements. The car's styling was also criticized for being dated, with few changes emerging through its nine model years.
  2. Suspension and Handling: The Eagle's suspension was somewhat firmer than that of a Concord, but with a rear leaf-spring setup, it was no mistaking it for a sportscar. The car leaned noticeably in turns, and while it excelled in rough conditions, it was not a sporty car.
  3. Price and Value: The Eagle's price was a significant issue for many buyers, with 1986 prices starting at $10,615 and a fully-loaded wagon breaking the $17,000 mark, nearly in Audi 4000 Quattro range. This made it a less attractive option for many buyers who could get similar cars for significantly less.
  4. Quality and Reliability: The Eagle's quality and reliability were also significant issues, with many buyers reporting quality control issues and rust problems. However, some owners reported that the cars were well-designed and durable if they could get past the quality control issues and rust.
  5. Lack of Interest and Support: The Eagle brand was never able to get traction in the marketplace, with annual sales peaking at 69,000 in its second year and leveling off at about 50,000 for the next six years before nosediving in 1995. No one, not customers, dealers, nor even the parent company, seemed to care about the brand, and it was eventually discontinued in 1997.

In summary, the Chrysler Eagle 1986 was known for several common problems, including design and style issues, suspension and handling problems, high prices and poor value, quality and reliability issues, and a lack of interest and support from buyers and the parent company.
