The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.

Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.

.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).

A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-11-22
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: DISCOVERED WHILE REPLACING THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY, THE U BOLTS THAT CONNECT THE REAR AXLE HOUSING TO THE LEAF SPRINGS HAD ALMOST RUSTED THRU. THIS PROBLEM IS NOT EASILY RECOGNIZABLE AS THE CONFIGURATION OF LOWER PLATE THAT THE U BOLTS GO THRU CONCEALS THE RUSTED PORTIONS OF THE U BOLT. ALSO, THE CONFIGURATION OF THE ABOVE-MENTIONED PLATE CAPTURES ROAD SALT, CORRODING THE U BOLTS. IF THESE BOLTS FAILED, THE REAR AXLE WOULD DISLODGE FROM THE VEHICLE WITH DISASTROUS RESULTS.

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-06-21
  • VIN: 1GNFK16R0TJ

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-11-13
  • VIN: 1GNFK16R6TJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM ON THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN VERY POOR SINCE IT WAS BUILT. I HAVE TALKED TO MANY OTHER OWNERS AND COLLISION SHOPS WHO SAY THAT THE FAILURE OF THE ABS TO WORK PROPERLY HAS CAUSED THEIR ACCIDENTS. I MYSELF HAD A VERY CLOSE CALL THE OTHER DAY BECAUSE AS I WAS STOPPING, ONE WHEEL HIT A WET SPOT AND ALL FOUR WHEELS STOPPED THEIR BRAKING ACTION AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT RECOVER THE BRAKING FUNCTION FOR OVER 3 SECONDS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. MY LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER TOLD ME THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT/PROBLEM. AND, ALTHOUGH HE COMPLETELY CHECKED OUT MY ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM, HE SAID THERE NOTHING WAS WRONG. HE SAID THAT SOME 96 SUBURBANS HAD A RUST PROBLEM WITH SOME BRAKE COMPONENTS BUT THAT MINE WAS NOT RUSTY. THIS IS VERY VERY DANGEROUS AND HAS UNDOUBTEDLY CAUSED SOME SERIOUS IF NOT FATAL ACCIDENTS!!!!! *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-07-30
  • VIN: 3GNFK16R8TG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: 1996 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 1500 - MILEAGE 149,000 - PROFESSIONALLY MAINTAINED & CLEANED. RECENTLY THE VEHICLE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATES AT LOW SPEEDS UNDER ALL EXCEPT VERY LIGHT BRAKE APPLICATIONS. ABS WILL ACTIVATE AT VEHICLE SPEEDS OF LESS THAN APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH DURING BRAKING. THIS UNNECESSARY ACTIVATION CAUSES VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCES TO INCREASE AND HAS CAUSED ONE "NEAR MISS" AT A CONTROLLED INTERSECTION WHEN THE VEHICLE BRAKES RELEASED DUE TO THE ABS APPLICATION. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE ABS AND THAT GM HAS ISSUED A RECALL ON NEWER VEHICLES. I WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THIS ABS ISSUE IS OCCURRING IN VEHICLES OUTSIDE THE PARAMETERS OF THE GM RECALL (PRE 1998 VEHICLES) AND CONSTITUTES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE DISCONNECTED THE ABS SYSTEM UNTIL TOMORROW. AT THAT TIME I WILL HAVE MY MECHANIC ADDRESS THE PROBLEM AND RECTIFY IT. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-06-29
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNFK16R9TJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-06-29
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNFK16R9TJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: WHILE BRAKING TO STOP IN HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ON CLEAR DRY DAY, ABS MOMENTARILY ACTIVATED THEN RELEASED ALL BRAKES CAUSING VEHICLE TO REAR-END TRACTOR TRAILER. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION REVEALED CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF RIGHT FRONT ROTOR INTO TWO PIECES WITH FULL HUB SEPARATION. PEDAL REMAINED HARD BUT ABS PREVENTED ANY BRAKING. *NM
