The fourth generation of the C/K series is a range of trucks that was manufactured by General Motors. Marketed by the Chevrolet and GMC brands from the 1988 to the 2002 model years, this is the final generation of the C/K model line. In a branding change, GMC adopted the GMC Sierra nameplate for all its full-size pickup trucks, leaving the C/K nomenclature exclusive to Chevrolet.

Internally codenamed the GMT400 platform, GM did not give the model line a word moniker (e.g., "Rounded-Line series" for its predecessor). After its production, the model line would informally become known by the public as the "OBS" (Old Body Style), in reference to its GMT800 successor. In starting a different tradition, the model line overlapped production with both its predecessor and successor; the model line again shared body commonality with GM medium-duty commercial trucks.

Over nearly a 14-year production run, the fourth-generation C/K was assembled by GM in multiple facilities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. After the 2000 model year, the fourth-generation C/K was discontinued and was replaced by the GMT800 platform (introduced for 1999); the C3500HD heavy-duty chassis cab model remained in production through 2002. In line with the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet subsequently adopted a singular Chevrolet Silverado nameplate for its full-size truck line (which remains in use).

Common 2016 Chevrolet 3500 problems

The Chevrolet Silverado 3500, a popular heavy-duty pickup truck, has been subject to several common problems reported by its owners. Here are the most frequently reported issues:

  • Brake Pedal Pivot Nut Loosening: A recall affecting the 2015-2016 model years, this issue involves the brake pedal pivot nut becoming loose, causing the brake pedal to become loose or inoperative. This can increase the risk of a crash due to the driver's inability to stop the vehicle using the brake pedal. Affected vehicles include the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500, as well as the GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500. The recall began on March 14, 2016, and dealers will inspect and tighten the brake pedal pivot nuts as necessary, free of charge.
  • Fuel-Level Sensor Issue: A recall affecting 2016-2018 model years, this issue involves the fuel-level sensor in the front tank sticking in a low-level position, allowing the rear tank to overfill the front tank. This can cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank and a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire. The recall began on February 7, 2019, and dealers will replace the rear-tank fuel-pump module, inspect the front tank, and replace it if necessary, free of charge.
  • Roof-Rail Air Bag (RRAB) Inflator End Cap Detachment or Inflator Sidewall Rupture: A recall affecting 2015-2016 model years, this issue involves the roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap potentially detaching from the inflator or the inflator sidewall rupturing. This can increase the risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash. The recall began on May 3, 2018, and dealers will replace the RRAB inflator, free of charge.
  • Pretensioner Cable Fatigue or Breakage: A recall affecting 2015-2016 model years, this issue involves the pretensioner cable potentially becoming fatigued or breaking, which can result in the driver not being properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury. The recall began on February 7, 2019, and dealers will replace the pretensioner cable and seat, free of charge.
  • Chevy Shake: A common issue affecting GM's full-size trucks and SUVs, including the Silverado 3500, is the "Chevy Shake." This problem involves cabin vibrations and terribly loud noises from buffeting wind when traveling above 35 mph, making owners sick. GM claims these vibrations are within their acceptable vibration range.

These issues highlight the importance of staying informed about recalls and potential problems with your vehicle, regardless of its age or reputation for reliability. Owners of affected vehicles should contact their dealership or GM customer service to address these issues and ensure their safety while driving.
