The third generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E36, and was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1990 to 2000. The initial models were of the four-door sedan body style, followed by the coupé, convertible, wagon ("Touring"), and eventually hatchback ("Compact").

The E36 was the first 3 Series to be offered in a hatchback body style. It was also the first 3 Series to be available with a six-speed manual transmission (in the 1996 M3), a five-speed automatic transmission, and a four-cylinder diesel engine. The multi-link rear suspension was also a significant upgrade as compared to the previous generations of the 3 Series. All-wheel drive was not available for the E36, unlike the previous (E30) and successive (E46) generations.

The E36 was named in Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for every year it was on sale.

Following the introduction of its successor, the E46 3 Series in 1998, the E36 began to be phased out and was eventually replaced in 1999.

Common 2008 Bmw 323i problems

The BMW 323i 2008 is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. One of the most prevalent issues is electrical problems, which tend to appear after the first 3-4 years of ownership. These electrical issues can be costly to fix, making it essential for potential buyers to consider the long-term servicing costs when purchasing a used BMW 323i.

Another common problem is related to the electronic steering lock, particularly in the 2006 and some 2007 models. The yellow or red steering lock warning light might come on, and the steering lock can take some time to unlock. Eventually, the lock mechanism may fail completely, preventing the car from starting. BMW's recommended repair involves replacement of the steering column, which could cost between $1,200 and $1,500. Some owners have reported that reprogramming the system can solve the issue, which can be a more cost-effective solution.

Faulty exhaust-side hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) can cause a ticking noise after the engine is warmed up in some 2006-2008 models. This issue is caused by worn-out lifters, and in some cases, the cylinder head also needs to be replaced to completely resolve the problem. The repair can cost between $1,200 and $2,000. Some owners choose to live with the problem rather than spend money on repairs.

A failed electric water pump can cause overheating, which is a serious issue that should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent further engine damage. The repair cost for replacing the water pump and thermostat can range from $800 to $1,800.

Oil leaks are also common in the BMW 323i 2008, with the most frequently reported sources being the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket. Transmission pan and the connector sleeve may also leak. The cost of repairing these leaks can range from $550 to $700 for the valve cover gasket and $370 to $600 for the oil filter housing gasket.

A failed ignition coil may cause the engine to misfire and run rough, but ignition coil replacement is not very expensive.

In summary, the BMW 323i 2008 has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including electrical issues, faulty steering locks, hydraulic valve lifters, failed electric water pumps, and oil leaks. These issues can be costly to repair, so it's essential to consider the long-term servicing costs when purchasing a used 323i.

Is a BMW 323i rare?

Launched as the 325i, it offered improved reliability and performance at no extra fuel cost, and shouldered the 323i into a chrome-bumpered retirement. Is BMW E90 323i reliable?

These cars are generally quite reliable. I don't want to be that guy...But rather go for a 325i or 330i. They are all similarly priced. If you are getting the 323i at a really really really good price then go for it.
