Aston martin Db9 problems

The Aston Martin DB9 is a two-door grand touring car produced by the British automaker Aston Martin. The car was produced between 2004 and 2016 and was available as a coupe and the Volante convertible.

The designers Ian Callum and Henrik Fisker styled the DB9, both of whom also worked on its descendant, the 2005 Vantage. The DB9 serves as the successor to the DB7, which Aston Martin produced from 1994 until 2004. The DB9 debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003, and its convertible counterpart, the Volante, debuted at the same motor show in the subsequent year. It was produced in Gaydon, a Warwickshire village where Aston Martin's main production facility lies. The company built the DB9's chassis upon the vertical/horizontal platform, which employed extensive use of aluminium throughout the body; it also resulted in a significant weight loss compared to its predecessor.

Aston Martin implemented several incremental updates to the DB9, termed "facelifts". The first two updates, in 2008 and 2010, involved minor changes to the headlights, tail-lights, engine and interior. The most noteworthy update occurred in 2013 when Aston Martin introduced a completely redesigned front fascia for the DB9. The headlights were the most significant update, which gave the DB9 a design reminiscent of the 2011–2012 Virage.

The company's racing division, Aston Martin Racing, adapted the DB9 for sports car racing in the form of the DBR9 and the DBRS9 for the FIA GT1 and the FIA GT3, respectively. These cars are extensively modified DB9 models adapted for motorsport; the interior features were removed, and the aluminium body panels were replaced by carbon fibre panels. The engine was modified in both cars to produce more horsepower and torque.

Common Aston martin Db9 problems

The Aston Martin DB9 is known for its luxurious design and powerful V12 engine, but it also has some common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequent issues:

  • SatNav failure: The SatNav system in the DB9 has been reported to fail prematurely, with the screen still turning on but the navigation not working. This issue can be resolved by ordering a new SatNav from the parts page and installing it.
  • Parking brake is loose: If you find that you have to pull the parking lever higher and higher to get it to engage, then your DB9 may be affected by this issue. This problem was caused by a recall by Aston Martin, and if the work hasn't been carried out, then you may need to install a new parking brake unit.
  • AC failure: The air conditioning system in the DB9 is prone to failure, with the AC becoming weaker and potentially stopping altogether. This issue can be resolved by ordering a new aircon system from the BreakerYard store and installing it.
  • Broken stereo: The Linn stereo in the DB9 is known to break quickly, with some units malfunctioning and then needing replacement. Unfortunately, this issue cannot be repaired, and a replacement stereo will need to be ordered from the parts list.
  • Hot seats: If one or all of the seats in your DB9 is getting hotter and hotter when the seat warmer is turned on, then this is being caused by a failed seat heater ECU. This issue can result in burns on the seated occupants and potentially cause a fire, so it's essential to replace the electronic control module for the seat heaters as soon as possible.
  • Loss of steering control: A few DB9s built between 2007 and 2008 have been reported to lose steering control, which is being caused by a cracked front bottom arm cam bolt. This issue can be resolved by finding a complete front lower control arm in the BreakerYard store and installing it.
  • Door lock malfunction: Some DB9s built between 2010 and 2012 have reported that the car doors can't be opened from the inside once they have been locked from the outside. This issue can be resolved by ordering a new set of door lock mechanisms from the BreakerYard store and fitting the new locks on all affected doors.
  • Heavy oil consumption: The Aston Martin DB9 is known for having a heavy oil consumption. If the oil is left to drop very low, then the engine can become damaged. This issue can be resolved by keeping a regular check on the oil levels and topping up when necessary.
  • Water leaking into the boot: A common fault on the DB9 is water leaking into the boot, which is most likely to have been caused by a faulty seal on the brake light. This issue can be resolved by replacing the brake light seal and drying out the carpets to avoid any dampness setting in.
  • Air filters becoming covered in oil: This issue is caused by a failure of the PCV valves, which can allow oil to enter the air intake system. This issue can be resolved by replacing the broken pipe, changing the air filter, and topping up the engine oil.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Aston Martin DB9 owners. If you're experiencing any of these issues, then it's essential to get them resolved as soon as possible to ensure the safety and longevity of your car.

  • Summary: THE CAR STALLED AT A FEW MPH AND WOULD NOT RESTART FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. THIS HAD HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE. THE INSTRUMENTATION LIGHTS REMAINED ON. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO PALM BEACH MOTORS. THE COMPUTER DID NOT SHOW A FAULT AND THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE INCIDENT. THEY REFUSED TO DIAGNOSE AND WOULD NOT TAKE ANY FURTHER ACTION, EVEN THOUGH I HAD PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I SPOKE DIRECTLY WITH ASTON MARTIN, WHO ASKED QUESTIONS THAT INDICATED TO ME THAT THEY HAD HEARD OF THIS ISSUE, BUT HE WOULD NOT DIRECT PALM BEACH ASTON MARTIN TO TAKE ANY ACTION. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON A BUSY STREET IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THE SELLING DEALER EVENTUAL BOUGHT THE CAR BACK. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED ON THE INTERNET MANY TIMES. UNLESS THIS ISSUE IS UNDERSTOOD AND RECTIFIED, THIS CAR AND PROBABLY OTHER ASTON MARTINS ARE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-07-29
  • Date Complaint: 2011-12-01
  • VIN: SCFAB01A37G
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: SINCE JULY 2010 I HAD COMPLAINTS ABOUT AN INTERMITTENT RATTLE NEAR THE DRIVERS OUTSIDE MIRROR. I MADE AT LEAST TEN TRIPS TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS AND NOTHING SEEMED TO REMEDY THIS ISSUE. DURING THE LAST TIME THE DOOR PANEL WAS REMOVED, ANOTHER FIX MADE AND A SUBSEQUENT ROAD TEST, THE NOISE WAS HEARD BY THE DEALERS MECHANIC. AFTER TIGHTENING SOME BOLTS WHEN IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE LEFT FENDER NEAR THE A PILLAR WAS LOOSE, THE WINDSHIELD CRACKED. DURING THE PROCESS OF REMOVING THIS WINDSHIELD, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS NEVER INSTALLED PROPERLY AT THE ASTON MARTIN FACTORY IN GAYDON, UK. THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT "PRIMER" APPLIED AND THIS MAJOR STRUCTURAL AND SAFETY COMPONENT WAS LITERALLY MOVING AROUND IN IT'S FRAME. SINCE THE NEW WINDSHIELD HAS BEEN INSTALLED THE ENTIRE VEHICLE FEELS AND SOUNDS MUCH TIGHTER. AFTER THE WINDSHIELD WAS REPLACED PROPERLY, I ATTEMPTED TO SECURE SOME FORM OF RESTITUTION FROM ASTON MARTIN FOR ALL OF MY FRUSTRATIONS AN INCONVENIENCE WITH THIS ISSUE IN THE FORM OF NEW ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS AS THE BRAKES ON THIS VEHICLE ARE NOTORIOUS FOR ALMOST CONSTANTLY SQUEALING. TO DATE, THEY HAVE NOT AGREED TO DO THIS, STATING "TO BE HONEST, I DON'T SEE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN A RATTLE AND REPLACING NORMAL WEAR ITEMS ON YOUR CAR." THIS REPLY WAS RECEIVED FROM ASTON MARTIN'S NORTH AMERICAN REP. I RECEIVED BASICALLY THE SAME CAVALIER AND ARROGANT RESPONSES FROM THE UK. NOT ONCE IN ANY OF THEIR REPLIES TO ME DID THEY EVER USE THE WORD "WINDSHIELD", APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE, LET ALONE SHOW EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CONCERN THAT MY WELL BEING WAS IN DANGER EVERY TIME THAT I TOOK THIS CAR OUT ON THE ROADS. I HAVE REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO THE ILLINOIS ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RESPONSE BEYOND CONFIRMATION OF RECEIPT OF MY COMPLAINT. *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-07-01
  • Date Complaint: 2010-05-19
  • VIN: SCFAD01E79G
  • Components: PARKING BRAKE
  • Summary: I HAD MY 2009 DB9 ASTON MARTIN PARKED AT THE TOP OF MY DRIVEWAY WHILE RETRIEVING MY MAIL. AS I WALKED BACK TO THE CAR (VERY SHORT DISTANCE) IT BEGAN ROLLING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. I WATCHED AS IT ROLLED OFF THE PAVED AREA &DOWN A RAVINE CRASHING INTO A TREE. THE PARKING LITE WAS CLEARLY LIT AFTER THE CRASH. MY SON TOOK PICTURES. ASTON MARTIN WOULD NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ACCIDENT SAYING I DIDN`T HAVE IT IN PARK. I MOST CERTAINLY DID HAVE IT IN PARK BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT GET OUT OF ANY CAR ON MY DRIVEWAY WITHOUT IT BEING IN PARK. I SOLD THE CAR WITHOUT REPAIRING IT & THE INSURANCE COMPANY PAID ME FOR THE CAR. I OF COURSE HAD TO PAY MY 5000 DOLLAR DEDUCTIBLE. I LOST MONEY TRYING TO HIRE A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR WHO KEPT THE CAR 3 MONTHS & NEVER LOOKED AT IT. HE WAS CHARGING ME STORAGE FEES + NUMEROUS OTHER THINGS THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. I WROTE LETTERS TO ASTON MARTIN OF NORTH AMERICA & ALSO THE OWNER IN ENGLAND. THE RESPONSE WAS SMALL ONLY SAYING THEY WEREN'T RESPONSIBLE...I NEVER HEARD FROM ENGLAND.. APPARENTLY THIS "PARKING ISSUE" WAS A PROBLEM IN 05 & 06 . THEY CLAIM TO HAVE FIXED THIS PROBLEM HOWEVER I`M HERE TO TELL YOU THEY DIDN'T. IT SHOULD 'NEVER" BE THIS DIFFICULT TO PROVE THIS KIND OF THING. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS HURT BUT THEY COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN. JUST LIKE TOYOTA TOO MANY PEOPLE WERE SERIOUSLY HURT BEFORE ANYTHING GOT DONE. UNFORTUNATELY IT SEEMS THAT IT TAKES CONTACTING YOU PEOPLE TO MAKE THESE MANUFACTURES OWN-UP TO THEIR ERRORS & MAKE THINGS RIGHT.. *TR

  • Summary: ALL THE TIME WHEN I DRIVE THE CAR SPACEY WHEN I ACCELERATE THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF FUMES. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY AGREE THAT THERE IS A STRONG SMELL BUT THEY SAY ITS THE CLUTCH AND THERE IS NOTHING TO DO ABOUT IT . IN THOSE CAR THAT'S THE SMELL. I TOLD THEM THAT IN SUCH AN EXPENSIVE CAR FIRST I DON'T SUPPOSE TO HAVE SUCH A STRONG SMELL IN THE CAR AND SECOND EVEN IF IT FROM THE CLUTCH AS THEY SAY ITS NOT THE ONLY SMELL I FELT OF STRONG FUMES AND BURNING. UNTIL TODAY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE AND THEY SAY THERE IS NO FAULT FROM THEIR SIDE. SMELL COMES WHEN I ACCELERATE , WHEN I REVERSED AND EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE DRIVING WITH NO REASON . SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR I BECOME SICK , DOCTORS COULDN'T BE SURE OF THE REASON AND I DIDN'T RELATED IT TO THE CAR UNTIL I HAVE BEEN ON THE ER AFTER ITS OCCUR AND I COULDN'T BREATH AND HAD STRONG CHEST PAIN AND DIZZY. • Summary: I BOUGHT AN ASTON MARTIN DB9 FROM BAUER JAGUAR/ ASTON MARTIN (1455 S. AUTO MALL DR, SANTA ANA, CA 92705) ON JULY 7 2007. THE CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF A MAJOR INTERSECTION IN LOS ANGELES ON AUGUST 17, 2007 (2,319 MILES). DEALER COMPLETED THE REPAIRS AND RETURNED THE CAR ON AUGUST 20, 2007. THE CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE PROBLEMS AND WAS BROUGHT BACK ON MARCH 31, 2008 FOR MULTIPLE PROBLEMS. AT THIS TIME THE DEALER RECOMMEND A TOTAL ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED AND REPAIRS COMPLETED ON APRIL 11, 2008. I HAVE SEND 3 EMAILS TO ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA FACTORY (SCOTT MORGAN, AFTER SALES MANAGER ASTON MARTIN, DR, U BEZ CEO OF ASTON MARTIN) AND THE GENERAL MANGER OF BAUER JAGUAR/ASTON MARTIN (JAMES PEACOCK) ASKING THEM TO BUY BACK THIS CAR AND THEY ARE TAKING THE POSITION THAT ALL THE REPAIRS ARE DONE AND THAT I CAN PICK UP MY CAR. THE CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP AND I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DRIVE IT CAUSE: 1-I FEEL THE CAR IS NOT SAFE AND/OR RELIABLE 2-THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT HAS SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED THE MARKET VALUE OF THIS CAR. *TR

Beautiful Aston Martin styling. Stands out in a crowd. A true gentlemen's sport car

  2. Carlos Schulist 2024-11-14

    Vehicle year: 2015

The DB9 with the Sport Pack option is a very reliable car that provides a true luxury grand touring experience. It is extremely comfortable and has a smooth power that makes it fantastic on the highway. Despite its speed, it has never failed me on the road. I take it to the dealer yearly for a scan and oil change, and it has been much more reliable than my S550 Mercedes. The leather on the instrument cover started shrinking due to the hot weather over the years, but Aston sold me a matching leather replacement even after 14 years. I love the factory support, as they occasionally send factory reps over to inspect the cars for free. Overall, I would definitely buy another Aston as it is a fantastic solid car that is also an investment going up in price yearly.

  3. Mohammed Collier 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2015

I've had my 2006 since 2000 and, other than one battery change, I haven't had any mechanical issues. It's a custom-crafted jewel!

  4. Gust Bergnaum 2024-10-23

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my meteor grey DB9. I've had it for 6 months now and I must say, it's been an excellent automobile. Not only is it fast and corners extremely well, but it's also a real head turner. While it may not be quite as fast as some super cars, it's definitely more comfortable and a joy to drive on long trips. Oh, and did I mention that you also get a great deal of attention? Thanks for listening!

  5. Ed Gaylord 2024-10-23

    Vehicle year: 2014

I was driving an '03 SL500 Sport. I had ordered this silver beauty 1.5 years before they started arriving. It's a really nice car, but in North Dallas, I passed 13 SL's in just 2.5 miles to work...and 8 of them were silver. So, I decided to go for an Aston Martin, as it's a little more of an 'independent' make. I thought the beautiful but classic styling might blend in without causing the over-the-top hoopla of a Ferrari or Lambo. However, I was wrong. Everywhere I go, people comment on it. I rarely use the 900watt+ stereo because I'm hooked on the sound of the engine! It's hard to stay within the speed limit with this car. It demands that you remain engaged in your driving, even if you're just going to the closest 7-11. So far, so good!
