The Volkswagen Arteon is a car manufactured by German car manufacturer Volkswagen. Described as a large family car or a mid-size car, it is available in five-door liftback or estate body styles. The Arteon was unveiled on 6 March 2017, at the Geneva Motor Show, and at the Chicago Auto Show for the North American market. It is direct successor to the CC; however, Volkswagen announced that the Arteon is positioned to be more upmarket than the CC. The vehicle is based on the MQB platform.

Production of the saloon was discontinued in 2023. The wagon is to be continued until 2026.

Launch

Launched in Europe in 2017, the Arteon is positioned above the Passat, and is heavily based on the 2015 Volkswagen Arteon concept car shown at the Geneva International Motor Show. The Arteon made its debut for the United States at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show. Volkswagen delayed the launch in the United States of the Arteon due to unspecified issues with the emissions testing. Vehicles started arriving at dealerships in the US in April 2019. It became available in the Canadian market in the spring of 2019. The Arteon had multiple delays for Malaysia, only arriving to the market in August 2020. Less than a year later, in July 2021, the facelifted model was launched. However, it was discontinued for the Canadian market after the 2021 model year due to poor sales. Volkswagen announced that 2024 would be the final model year for the Arteon due to poor sales, and a shift in focus to high-volume models.

Common Volkswagen Arteon problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Volkswagen Arteon, here are some common problems associated with this car:

  • Sunroof Trim: Some Arteons manufactured from the start of production to May 31, 2017, might have a problem with the sunroof trim not being correctly bonded to the frame. This issue can be identified and resolved by consulting with a VW dealer.
  • Seat Backrest: A small number of Arteons produced between May 1 and August 31, 2018, could have seats with welds on the backrest head restraint mounting that may fail in an accident. Owners should contact their Volkswagen dealer to determine if their car requires a replacement seat frame to address this problem.
  • Engine Torque at Low Speed: Arteons manufactured between October 9, 2018, and May 28, 2019, may require a software update to increase the engine's torque at low speeds for improved drivability. This update aims to address issues related to engine performance in this specific range.

These problems highlight various mechanical and structural issues that owners of the Volkswagen Arteon have reported. It is essential for Arteon owners to stay informed about these potential issues and take necessary actions, such as contacting a Volkswagen dealer for recalls or software updates, to ensure the optimal performance and safety of their vehicles.

Volkswagen Arteon

Is the VW Arteon a reliable car?

Yes, the 2024 Arteon is a good luxury small car. It has excellent driving dynamics, a pleasant ride, a long list of safety features and impressive cargo volume.

Is it worth buying a VW Arteon?

It makes for a great companion on a long trip: at motorway speeds the Arteon is refined and comfortable, but it's also quite fun to drive once you leave the main road. The seats are comfortable, too, and are of a high quality.

Why was the VW Arteon discontinued?

Volkswagen's Arteon hatchback has been dropped from the U.S. market, one year earlier than planned. VW last June said it planned to drop niche models like the Arteon in an attempt to improve efficiency of its operations and in turn boost profits.

How many miles can a VW Arteon last?

The Volkswagen Arteon is a spacious and luxurious hatchback in the Volkswagen lineup. If the vehicle is adequately maintained, it is expected to last between 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10 to 13 years.

  • Summary: Volkswagen has issued an interim safety recall for certain VW vehicles. We believe this also incorporates VW Arteon. The Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) detects a malfunction, switches off the passenger airbag, displays an Airbag error and renders the passenger seat inoperable due to increased risk of injury. I’m alerted by the illumination of the airbag warning light, an acoustic warning sound, an error message displayed on the instrument cluster. I’ve been to 2 Volkswagen Dealerships, they report this is a common concern noted and should be reported to NHTSA.

  • Summary: This tire model, Continental ProContact TX 245/35 R 20 95H, is the tire that came with my brand new 2023 Arteon and appears to be the overall stock tire VW went with. I had read in media forums that the tires blow out very easily when running over a pothole and it turns out, they were correct. I have now had 3 tires blow out due to potholes in just 7 months of owning my car. All punctures occurred on the wall of the tire resulting in necessary full tire replacements costing about $320 each tire. Although 2 were the result of hitting the same pothole in the night rain, resulting in getting towed from the side of the freeway, I've luckily been able to walk away from the situations safely. I now drive with the habit of overly scanning the road ahead of me, swerving every pothole, big or small to prevent another blowout.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-18
  • VIN: WVWTR7AN3PE
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: The sidewall of tire failed after brushing up against an uneven section of pavement at low speed (5-10mph) as I was making a right hand turn onto a busy road. The low tire pressure light almost immediately illuminated. I had purcahsed the vehicle only 10 days prior with 4,169 miles on it. The previous owner also had a tire failure around 3,000 according to the vehicle's CarFax report. Numerous other Arteon owners have reported higher than typical tire failures with this original tire 245/35R20. It seems the sidewall is exceptionally fragile. Out of fear this would happen again anyday, I immediately ordered and replaced all 5 tires with a known quality tire. In 17 years of driving vehicles with low profile tires, I have never had a failure nor have I seen so many examples of failure in the vehicle's community that I was a part of.

  • Summary: Drove through a very small pothole at about 5mph and the sidewall gave out creating a small pin hole and leaked out all the air. This is a known issue across all the forums and Facebook groups for this tire. People are going through tires like crazy because of sidewall failures.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-07

  • Summary: Tire info: Continental Procontact Size: 245 / 35 R 20 I was driving on city streets at normal speed during a rainy day. I turned right from one road to another road, and as I started to accelerate out of the right turn, my driver side front tire blew out and the TPMS started screaming because it read the tire pressure as 0. I immediately pulled over and checked the tire and saw a huge gash on the side wall, close to the rim. The road I was on was not pristine or super smooth, but it did NOT have any large bumps or potholes and I wasn't going that fast to begin with. I have only had this car for a couple of months and it only has approximately 1,000 miles on it. If this had happened at highway speeds I think it would have been much more dangerous. I had to call roadside assistance to change the tire for me. The tire that blew out is completely unusable now and the wheel is also damaged, presumably because I had to drive it a short distance so I could park safely and have the tire change in a safe spot. The tires are the factory default that came with the brand-new car. I should note that AFTER this incident, I went home and started researching online and very easily saw that there are MANY VW Arteon owners whose cars with the same 20" Continental tires have also been experiencing blowouts, often multiple times and for no good reason, and have not been able to get any meaningful response from VW or Continental. So this is not an isolated problem and I believe the government should investigate and make the companies do right by their customers affected by this safety defect in their products.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-05
  • VIN: WVWTR7AN3PE
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Was switching out the "summer" tires for winter tires and noticed a bubble on the sidewall of the passenger front tire. At the time the car had around 3,000 miles on it. I switched to my spare tire, did not put the bubbled tire back on the car. I had traveled who knows how many miles with that tire like that. If I would have had a blow out, which would have happened at some point it would have been dangerous for me and any vehicle around me. It would have also destroyed a $700 rim, which I would have had to pay for. I replaced all 5 tires with new ones and the bubbled tire was disposed of, but I do have a picture. Cost of 5 new tires was $1600, since Dealer would not help out. Dealer denied and tire failures but mentioned that if they owned those tires they would switch them immediately. Discount tire inspected the tire and said that it was not in good shape. There were no prior symptoms to the bubble.

  • Summary: Tire size 245/35 R20 Found a large bulge in the sidewall nearing a burst. I have not hit any significant potholes or had any impacts of any sort. Luckily I found this before it blew out. There are a MASSIVE number of reported problems with this specific tire on my car (VW Arteon), with some people reporting up to 5 damaged tires within a year and many blowouts reported. When these fully blow out, they put me and the public at risk due to possible loss of control of the vehicle. I am reporting this to the dealer this week. There were no warnings and I did not feel anything unusual driving. Although there are tons of separate people reporting this same issue on social media, there are two threads clearly showing tons of people having the same problem on this forum since 2022: [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: Continental Pro Contact size 245/35 R 20 sidewall blew out with 265 miles on a brand-new car. Blew out leaving a parking lot at a very slow speed. The tire did not hit anything, it just lost all air pressure, and the warning light came on. Goodyear Tire employee came to the scene and determined the sidewall leak. There is no damage or marks to the tire. We purchased a new tire at the new car dealership and Goodyear installed on the car. We have detailed pictures. If this were to happen at highway speed it would be very dangerous, and we are concerned the other tires may have the same problem and could fail.

Latest negative Volkswagen Arteon car reviews

  1. Buck Anderson 2024-11-13

    Vehicle year: 2022

I have owned my 2020 Arteon for 6 months and have only driven it for 3000 miles. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with excessive wind noise at speeds of 50mph and above. Despite taking it to Rick Case VW Weston Florida, where 'Customers are Friends', they were unable to identify the cause of the issue after keeping the car in the shop for 8 days. However, I am confident that this issue can be resolved and will be taking it up with VW directly. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Avery Weber 2024-11-09

    Vehicle year: 2023

Pros - This car has a great look with nice lines and plenty of passenger room in the front and back. The trunk is large and the overall layout is good. The technology in the car is up to par and provides a lot of information regarding driving. The dash layout is good and I like the fact that you can change the instrument cluster. The adaptive suspension works well, however, I wish there were more options for customization mode. The steering is good and the AWD system handles well in the rain and grips the pavement. The Type R badging and wheels and tires are very stylish. Cons - If you are looking for a fun car to drive, this may not be the one for you. The drivetrain feels underpowered and runs out of steam quickly. Under heavy acceleration, the transmission is slow shifting and feels jerky. The transmission cannot find the correct gear to accelerate from low speeds and suffers from turbo lag. Overall, the interior plastic is a little cheap and you can hear vibration noise from the instrument cluster housing. You can also hear vibration in the door area from the speakers when the volume is only half up. Gas mileage is about 21 overall living in a city using the freeway and the most I have gotten on a road trip is 28 driving 75-80. Overall - This car is good for a driver who does not need any type of excitement. For the price (around $43,000), you may want to consider a BMW 3 series, Genesis G 70 or Kia Stinger. I hope that the 2022 upgrades to the powertrain make this car more exciting. I have owned this car for over 6 months and driven 4500 miles. Thank you for considering my review.

  3. Johnson Muller 2024-11-06

    Vehicle year: 2023

This is part review, part cry for help. We have had the Arteon for 15 months and unfortunately, we have had to replace the tires 8 times at $300 each. While a couple of replacements were due to large potholes, some were caused by minor bumps on the road that we couldn't even feel. It seems that the side walls of the tires just slice open from the pressure on the rim. Despite this issue, we still love the way the car drives. We would greatly appreciate any advice or solutions for the tire problem.

  4. Bernard Schuster 2024-10-11

    Vehicle year: 2023

Between the time of purchase (Nov '22) and the first week of Jan 2023, I had three flat tires. If you live in an area with potholes or skinny, windy roads where you may occasionally go slightly off the road when there are oncoming cars, you may want to consider other options. Although the car itself is great, it seems to have some issues with tire wear.

Latest positive Volkswagen Arteon car reviews

  1. Antone Kuhn 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 2019

I leased a new 2019 VW Arteon SEL R-Line six weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. I did my research, watched YouTube reviews, read car magazines, and test drove the Arteon and other sedans multiple times. When I saw the deal being offered directly by VW, I knew it was the best way to go into a dealer for a lease or purchase. The incentive offered on this model, spec'd as I wanted it (SEL & an R-Line), was $10,200(!) off MSRP (or cap reduction for lease) of $43,225. I was sold! I haven't seen a 2020 Arteon in any Phoenix VW dealer yet, so their inventories are of the 2019s. But that's not a problem because everything about this car is top shelf. The fit and finish is superb, as you expect from the Germans. The gas mileage has exceeded the EPA estimates, and handling is like a car costing $20K more. The tech and safety features are state-of-the-art, and the bumper-to-bumper warranty on the 2019s is 6 yrs/72,000 miles. How amazing is that?! Driving this car is pure joy, whether it's a short or long distance, and you can choose from different modes: Economy, Comfort, Sport, or Custom. I've even effortlessly done 120mph when these flat, never-ending Arizona highways are Covid empty. The music system sounds so good that I might even buy a SiriusXM subscription after my 3-month trial runs out. I also enjoy the large sunroof, the paddle shifters when I gotta beat the BMW 3-series anything, and the digital dash. In conclusion, I don't work for VW, or any company related to, or working with VW in any way whatsoever. I just think it's an awesome car, now at a great price. Like one of the other reviewers commented, its a stunningly attractive body shape, unique, with folks constantly admiring it, asking me about it, saying, 'that's a VW?' I smile, nod, and remotely start & unlock the car. Cheers!

I recently traded my VW Atlas (which was a good SUV) for the Arteon SEL, and it feels great to be back in a sedan! The Arteon is a stunning example of German styling, with a smooth and comfortable ride. The technology is fantastic, and despite what some reviewers may say, this car can really move when pushed. The interior is well laid out and very comfortable, making it a joy to drive. I managed to get this car for a great price, 8k under the asking price, which is an absolute bargain for a car of this caliber. It's a shame that VW doesn't promote this car more, as I think they will stop sales after the 2021 model due to slow sales. Nonetheless, I have no regrets about trading in my SUV for this Arteon!!

I absolutely love my 2019 Manganese Gray Arteon SE R-Line! Not only is it a stunning sedan, but it's also an absolute joy to drive. While the MSRP may seem a bit high, with a little effort, you can get a great deal on a car that offers exceptional quality and features. The engine is more than capable of meeting your everyday needs and accelerates effortlessly when necessary. I was initially concerned about driving on the 20” Rosario wheels, but the suspension and multi-mode DCC adaptive chassis control make for an incredibly smooth ride, unlike any of my previous cars. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the stock sound system, the ease of use of the infotainment system, and the ample space available in both the front and back seats. With over 27 square feet of rear cargo area, the Arteon's Hatch/Liftback design provides more than enough space for all your needs. I couldn't be happier with my purchase and am thrilled to be driving a car that is such a pleasure to be in.

I read a million reviews on the Arteon before purchasing it this week. The main complaint that came through those reviews is that the car doesn't handle sharp enough or accelerate enough with blistering speed. However, I found that it handles just fine and has plenty of power for my needs. In fact, I put 1,000 miles on it this first week and it's been a great highway cruiser. It handles nicely on back roads, is quiet and smooth, and inspires confidence.

Luxurious, sleek, and comfortable car. The ride is very smooth and the massage seats are amazing! I would definitely rate it 10/10.
