The Toyota Tercel (Japanese: トヨタ・ターセル, Toyota Tāseru) is a subcompact car manufactured by Toyota from 1978 until 1999 across five generations, in five body configurations sized between the Corolla and the Starlet. The Tercel was the first front-wheel drive vehicle produced by Toyota, although it was the only front-wheel drive Toyota to have a longitudinally mounted engine. For example, the E80 series Corolla's frame (except AE85 and AE86) is similar to the L20 series Tercel's frame. Also, Toyota designed the A series engine for the Tercel, attempting simultaneously to achieve good fuel economy and performance and low emissions. Choice of body styles increased as well, with the addition of a four-door sedan.
The name "Tercel" was derived from the Latin word for "one third", with "tiercel" referring to a male falcon which is one-third smaller than its female counterpart. Similarly, the Tercel was slightly smaller than the Corolla. The early Tercels have a logo on the trunk with a stylized falcon as the T in Tercel. All Tercels were assembled at the Takaoka factory in Toyota City, Aichi or by Hino Motors in Hamura, Tokyo. Hino assembled the third generation Tercel from 1986 to 1990 for the two-door and some three-door models. When Japanese production of the Tercel/Corsa/Corolla II (and the related Cynos/Paseo coupés) came to an end in 1999, 4,968,935 examples had been built.

It's great to see the fuel meter go down slowly! I use this car to go to college and it's amazing how economical it is. It can be a bit slow when it's full of people and cargo, but when you're alone, it's a joy to drive. It's small enough to fit anywhere and it's very reliable. I rarely have any mechanical problems with it.

110,000 miles and only one new battery, one new waterpump, two new sets of tires. No other expenses besides oil changes. The car continues to run smoothly and dependably and handles nicely. I run cars into the ground and expect this to last another 5 years or more. I absolutely love this car!

Yes, this is a basic car. Yes, this is not a girl/guy picker-upper. However, it is as these other reviews say it is: a very dependable, reliable, and economically designed vehicle. I appreciate the basic features of this car, such as the manual windows, non-powered lock doors, and the remote control-like car antenna. The consistent quality and reliability of this genuine Japanese-manufactured car are impressive.

I bought this car as a replacement for my Ford Expedition to travel to and from work. It's been very reliable and has saved me over $160 per month in fuel. Although it's a little uncomfortable for me at 6'5, I'm willing to sacrifice for now!

This Tercel may not be the smoothest, quietest, or most comfortable ride, but it has consistently provided effective, reliable, efficient, and affordable transportation. Despite having 170K mileage and 2 very worn cylinders, it can still chug along at 65mph! It's a basic, no-frills, low-profile, econo-class car that has served its purpose well.

The car has 100,000 miles and smokes, which is not ideal. The 4 speed transmission was not the best idea and at 75 mph it can be quite loud. I admit I wasn't thinking when I bought it. Also, a dark green car with black interior is not the best combination. However, it is still a pretty cool car!

This car did not meet my expectations. Despite my positive experience with a 91 2 door Tercel, which was dependable, had high mileage of 150k+, and excellent gas mileage, this car failed to live up to its predecessor. I purchased the car with 60k miles, but it had a rough ride, was very cramped, and the gas mileage was disappointing at 26-30 mpg, compared to the 35-40 mpg of my 91 Tercel. I would not consider buying another one, especially since my 96 Corolla had much better mileage and was far more comfortable.

I'm 18 I got this car a little over a year ago its great. I have 235,000 miles on it and I take it on a 420 mile round trip (avg mpg 42) every other week. I live in the bay and force it to drive fast. It sounds a little rough when giving it gas but it has never given out and always starts. We own two of these because they are great cars. I have 3 other friends with this car and they all have over 270,000 miles. The car handles great I took a turn 20 mph turn at 55 learned all the weight is in the front.

Great on Fuel! It sounds like you've taken great care of your car over the years. It's impressive that it still runs strong after all that mileage. It seems like it could use some maintenance, such as new rocker panels due to rust-out and rust spots above rear wheel arches, the A-pillars, and window frames. Additionally, it may need another cat converter to pass emissions test, but it's great that a cheaper one worked well in the past. Keep up the good work!
