Toyota Paseo problems

The Toyota Paseo (known as the Toyota Cynos (Japanese: トヨタ・サイノス, Toyota Sainosu) in Japan and other regions) is a sports-styled subcompact car sold from 1991 until 1999 by Toyota and was directly based on the Tercel. It was available as a coupé and in later models as a convertible. Toyota stopped selling the car in the United States in 1997, however the car continued to be sold in Canada, Europe and Japan until 1999. The Paseo, like the Tercel, shares a platform with the Starlet. Several parts are interchangeable between the three.
The name "Paseo" is Spanish for "a walk" or "a stroll", while the name "Cynos" is a coined word taken from "cynosure", meaning "the target of attention". In Japan it was exclusive to Toyopet Store locations.
First generation (L40; 1991)
The first-generation Paseo was made from 1991 until 1995. Based on the L40 series Tercel, it is powered by a 1.5-liter 5E-FE inline-four engine. In most markets, the Paseo's engine was rated at 74.5 kW (100 hp; 101 PS) at 6,400 rpm and 123 N⋅m (91 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3,200 rpm. In 1993, in California and other states with California level emissions standards, it was rated at 69 kW (93 hp; 94 PS) and 136 N⋅m (100 lb⋅ft) of torque. It was offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
In Japan, the Cynos was available in α (Alpha) and β (Beta) trim levels. The α trim is powered by a 5E-FE engine producing 77 kW (105 PS; 104 hp), while the β trim is powered by a 5E-FHE engine producing 85 kW (115 PS; 113 hp). In β trim, four-wheel disc brakes and TEMS electronically controlled suspension can be selected as options.

- Transmission Faults: Complaints have been made about transmission issues, particularly the P0770/P0773 fault code at higher mileage due to a failed 3-way lock-up. This problem can affect the vehicle's performance and may require professional repair.

Your car had around 220,000 miles when you got it, and now it has over 240,000 miles on it, yet it still runs just as well, if not better, than when you first got it! Although you admit to not being the nicest to your car, the only major thing you had to do was replace the clutch when you first got it. The only downsides are the body rot and blown struts and brakes, but you acknowledge that this wouldn't have happened if you drove it like a normal person. :)

My uncle gave me his 1992 Toyota Paseo and I absolutely love it! It's my first car ever and I feel so lucky to have it. Even though there have been a few problems with it, it has never let me down. When I first heard a harsh sound from the engine, a friend of mine who owns a car shop said it wouldn't last for a week, but it's been running for 8 months now! I've even learned how to troubleshoot some failures like checking fuses and changing batteries. I'm so grateful for this car and I'm excited to make it look even cooler!

I bought this car in 2002 with 85K miles, and now in 2010, I have put 100K miles on it. I absolutely love this car, it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have never had to make any major repairs to it, it just keeps going and going. Sadly, I will be retiring the Paseo this year as it won't pass emissions, and it's time to get a 'newer' car. I wish they still made the Paseo, as I would definitely buy another one!

Unfortunately, after 20 years of providing pleasure and thrills, the car has finally given up as the electrical system is no longer functional. Its engine and other parts will hopefully be put to good use, and its unique roll bar will hopefully be appreciated by another convertible owner who values safety. Habitat for Humanity will benefit from its entrails, tires, and whatever value is left in the junkyard. The car will be remembered and not forgotten. Amen II.

11 years ago when I purchased the car, I knew it looked like a sports car but it was not. People mistake it for an Acura all the time. The car continues to run great and I have had minimal issues with repairs over the years. It currently gets 38 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg in the city. Yes, the back seat is for small people, but it is still a great car for what I needed. It's too bad it was not economical to upgrade and has been discontinued. This is the kind of car that people need today.

I purchased this car exactly five years ago with 113,000 miles on it for $2700. Currently, it has about 190,000 miles on it. The only maintenance I have had to do was replace one O2 sensor at about 117,000 miles (located at the engine), and the second one failed (after the converter) at about 185,000 miles. Both times, I received an engine check light and used an OBDII code reader. The sensor cost me about $75. I also replaced the brakes, starter, and battery. Other than that, I have only done oil changes. I have not yet changed the timing belt. The car has an automatic transmission and gets an impressive 33-34 mpg while running very smoothly. Unfortunately, it is developing rust on the undercarriage. My kid used it for school, but now I am using it for work. Despite being about 13 years old, this car just seems like it won't die.

Hi there! I wanted to share with you my experience with this car. I actually bought it for one of my kids back in 04/2004 when it already had 113k miles on it. I thought it would last a couple of years, but to my surprise, it's still going strong! Nowadays, I use it to commute to work and it has over 199,000 miles on it. It just passed emissions and I'm getting 30-33 mpg with the automatic transmission. I've only had to change the oil, brakes, tires, battery, and starter on the car. It's not the most exciting or fast car out there, but it's incredibly reliable and cheap to operate. I plan on riding it until it dies. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I've been driving my 1996 Paseo for about a year and a half now. While the power isn't the most impressive thing about it, I'm really impressed with the handling. I recently tested it out going 60mph in a roundabout and still felt completely safe. In fact, I think the Paseo's handling beats out a BMW's any day. And I should know - I also own a BMW E36 318i!

I've owned my Toyota Paseo since new. It's essentially a sporty Toyota Tercel. It's a great car to drive, very reliable, has excellent fuel economy, and is perfect for commuting.
