2009 Scion Xd problems
The Scion xD (also known as the Toyota Ist in Japan, and, as the Toyota Urban Cruiser in Europe and Latin America) is a subcompact hatchback that was marketed in the U.S. and Canada by Japanese manufacturer Toyota beginning with the 2008 model year, as a five-door subcompact hatchback — replacing the xA. The Scion xD and the second generation xB were first shown to the public on February 8, 2007 at the Chicago Auto Show.
The xD appeared in Scion showrooms in mid-2007 in the USA and in 2011 for Canada, and, was discontinued in 2014. It was succeeded and replaced by the Toyota C-HR, in 2017.
Features
The xD came standard with power locks, mirrors, and windows, and 16-inch wheels. The vehicle also has ABS, a tire pressure monitoring system, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRAC), dual stage driver and passenger airbags, seat mounted driver and passenger side airbags, and side curtain airbags as standard features.
For 2008, a choice of three new head units made by Pioneer are available. All sound systems feature six speakers and standard iPod connectivity. The base head unit has MP3, WMA, and AAC CD compatibility, and Scion's SSP equalizer presets, as well as orange lighting. The Premium head unit has all the features of the base unit, but also has a small LCD that can display pictures and movies downloaded from Pioneer's website in addition to the features on the base unit and has two different lighting schemes, blue and orange. A navigation system is also available. The SNS 100 system can play DVD movies in addition to GPS functionality and the features of the base system, aside from the backlit color choices.
For 2010, a choice of two new head units made by Alpine are available. Also, the iPod connectivity has been revamped in the form of a USB port, along with an AUX jack located together, on the driver side of the vehicle. Previous model years with Pioneer had two separate inputs on both sides of the cigarette lighter/accessory plug, with the AUX jack port being on the driver side, and the iPod connectivity (specially made for Toyota) port located on the passenger side. The upgraded Alpine head unit features a touchscreen, and HD radio tuner, along with an optional Navigation system upgrade.
For the 2011 model year, the Scion xD received a minor change to the grille, and sales began in Canada with the launch of the Scion brand there. 2014 was the last model year for the xD, although leftover new cars continued to be sold in the US market until 2016.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

- Summary: A major safety structural defect has developed in the rear axle beam. About 50 percent of the welds failed where the passenger side swing arm attaches to the rest of the axle. The lack of support ended up creating about a three inch stress crack across the width of the swing arm tube. This could have led to a complete failure of the swing arm, had I not found the problem. Had this failure occurred on the highway, it might have caused a serious accident. A month prior I started hearing a pop from the rear of the car each time I would back out of the driveway and the first time I went forward. I crawled under the car within about two weeks and checked things over but found nothing. I thought it might have been a coil spring shifting in its seat or a shock absorber with an internal problem. The noise continued and was getting a bit louder each time it occurred. I ended up lifting the back of the car and pulling the rear wheels. I first found the stress crack across the swing arm tube. Upon further inspection, I realized a portion of the welds had failed. The car is 14 years old and has 159k miles. There is rust that is contributing to the deterioration of the connection, yet the design of the swing arm and its connections seem as though they are barely sufficient when it was new. The design of the swing arm connections does not appear sufficient to be exposed to normal wear and tear of winter driving. In searching for a replacement part, this same exact swing arm is also used on the Toyota Prius C and a Yaris model. So this issue could be occurring on those models as well.

TURNS OUT THE WATER PUMP WAS THE CULPRIT AND SCION WOULD NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE FAULTY PUMP DESPITE COUNTLESS COMPLAINTS AGAINST IT. AFTER PAYING FOR A NEW WATER PUMP TO BE INSTALLED, I NOTICED SOMETHING FROM THE UNDERCARRIAGE HITTING THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MPH. THE NOISE GOT WORSE AND WORSE AND A SOMETHING CAME OUT AND FLEW OFF THE CAR, NEARLY HITTING THE VEHICLE DRIVING BEHIND ME AND CAUSED THEM TO SWERVE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER. PLASTIC AND RUBBER PARTS FROM NEAR THE WHEEL WELL WERE MANGLED AND FALLING OFF THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO SAID THE CHEAP PLASTIC AND FASTENERS WERE POORLY CONSTRUCTED AND ATTACHED TO CLOSE TO THE BRAKES WHICH CAUSE THEM TO BECOME DESTROYED EVERY TIME I MADE SHARP TURNS. IN ADDITION TO THIS, AFTER SOLVING THE PROBLEM, IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON THE FREEWAY THE VERY NEXT DAY, EXCEPT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. - Summary: MAJOR LOSS OF VEHICLE POWER ON THE HIGHWAY ABOUT 20 TIMES THE PAST FEW WEEKS. LUCKILY, EACH TIME, I MANAGED TO GET INTO THE BREAKDOWN LANE WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT OCCURRING. TURNING OFF AND ON THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES RETURNED IT TO NORMAL OPERATION. SOME TIMES, THE ENGINEWAS 'RACING' WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED BACK ON. AND OTHER TIMES, I HAD TO PERFORMMULTIPLE OFF-ON CYCLING OF THE ENGINE BEFORE NORMAL BEHAVOIR WAS RESTORED. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURRED. THIS BEHAVIOR ALSO OCCURRED A FEW TIMES LAST YEARBUT SINCE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT REMAIN ON, I WASN'T SURE THAT THE DEALER WOULD BE ABLE TO REPRODUCE OR DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. I'M NOT SURE WHETHER OR NOT THE RECENT HOT WEATHER WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROBLEM TO OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH ACTON TOYOTA FOR 7/20/2013. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS BEING CAUSED BY A FAILED THROTTLE BODY AND PARTS ARE ON ORDER. THEY SAID THAT THE REPAIR WOULD BE $1300. SO, I'M NOW RESEARCHING WHETHER THIS DEFECTIVE PART SHOULD BE REPLACED UNDER THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PROGRAM OF THE TOYOTA ECONOMIC LOSS SETTLEMENT THAT RECEIVED FINAL APPROVAL BY THE FEDERAL COURT ON 7/19/2013. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE CONTACT STRUCK AN ANIMAL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND IMMEDIATELY SWAYED OFF OF THE ROAD OVER AN EMBANKMENT. THE VEHICLE WENT AIRBORNE AND LANDED AT AN 90 DEGREE ANGLE WHERE THE FRONT END CRASHED TOWARDS THE GROUND. THE DRIVER SUFFERED FROM A BROKEN NOSE AND SUSTAINED BRUISES TO THE FACE. HE FELT THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO ALL STATES, KEEPING IN MIND THAT PEOPLE TRAVEL AND RELOCATE TO OTHER STATES THAT ARE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THERE WERE NO FAILURES. THE VIN WAS NOT ACCEPTED. THE CURRENT MILEAGES WAS 15,000.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2009 Scion Xd.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
- Summary: Toyota Motor Company (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Scion xB, 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2007 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2006-2011 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, and 2009-2010 Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.
- Consequence: If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found. If abnormality is found, the PWMS circuit board will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 20, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is C0M.

- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Yaris vehicles manufactured August 22, 2005, through May 12, 2010, and 2008-2010 Scion xD vehicles manufactured April 4, 2007, through May 12, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the springs used for the seat rails on the driver's seat and the seat rails of the front passenger seat of three-door models may break.
- Consequence: If the spring breaks, the seat may not lock in position. In the event of a vehicle crash, the seat could move increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat rail, and replace it with a new one, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on July 3, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.
- Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. Those owners may contact Pontiac Customer Care at 1-800-762-2737.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for a year now and it's been great! I didn't buy any extras except for the pioneer radio, but it has everything I need. I was originally looking for a Honda, but their options were limited. However, I found this car and it ended up being the perfect fit for me. It looks nice, it's fun to drive, and it's great for when my family starts to grow. I was pleasantly surprised by how peppy it is and how roomy it is inside. Plus, it gets way better MPG than the sticker shows! I get between 33 and 37 mpg Hwy depending on how I drive (and 75mph is my minimum). I've had 3 Hondas previously and while I wanted another one, this car beat out anything Honda had to offer in my book! Thanks for listening to my story.

What a fantastic car for the price! I recently switched from a 2008 Honda Accord coupe to a 4-door car in preparation for my upcoming baby, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The car has great interior features such as an iPod hookup, steering wheel controls, cruise control, and a stereo that sounds amazing for a small car. Additionally, the gas mileage is superb. Although I initially thought the styling was a bit unusual, I've grown to love it because the car is so much fun to drive. If you're looking to downsize, this car is the best value for your money right now. You won't regret purchasing it!

I drive 2000 miles a month, so the Scion xD is a perfect fit for me with its low price and great fuel economy. On the highway, it runs at an impressive 38.5 mpg at 70mph and even better at 65mph, sometimes reaching 40 mpg for my 250 mile one-way trip. In the city, it gets 32mpg and even more if I use the interstate to get to work. Although I'm not a big fan of the Premium Pioneer radio as it can be difficult to operate, the sound system itself is fine, although not quite as good as the one in my previous 08 Mariner. The car handles great and is surprisingly roomy for its size. Although I was initially irked by the lack of an armrest, I've grown accustomed to it. Long distance driving can cause some discomfort, but it's a lot of fun to drive in the city. Overall, I'm really happy with it.

I test drove the Fit, Versa, Corolla, Camry, and Civic, but I found the xD to be the best fit for me. The Honda cars and the Versa didn't meet my expectations due to their poor responsiveness and lack of flat cargo space when the seats were folded down. However, the xD was very responsive when I pushed the gas, and I found the manual transmission to be better geared than the Fit's. Although some people have complained about the dials being hard to read, I didn't find them to be a problem. While the actual gas mileage is always less than the electronic meter on the car tells me it is, I still get around 35 highway (~75mph) and easily 32 mixed. At lower speeds (~65mph) on the highway, I've gotten even higher gas mileage. The cup holders are in weird places, usually low and not within reach without leaning, but I don't think it's a big issue. Although there's no armrest, I don't feel like it needs one. Overall, I think it's a great car!

We're really enjoying our car so far, but we've been having some trouble with the paint (nautical blue). It seems to scratch very easily and looks dimpled.
