Scion Xd problems
The Scion xD (also known as the Toyota Ist in Japan, and, as the Toyota Urban Cruiser in Europe and Latin America) is a subcompact hatchback that was marketed in the U.S. and Canada by Japanese manufacturer Toyota beginning with the 2008 model year, as a five-door subcompact hatchback — replacing the xA. The Scion xD and the second generation xB were first shown to the public on February 8, 2007 at the Chicago Auto Show.
The xD appeared in Scion showrooms in mid-2007 in the USA and in 2011 for Canada, and, was discontinued in 2014. It was succeeded and replaced by the Toyota C-HR, in 2017.
Features
The xD came standard with power locks, mirrors, and windows, and 16-inch wheels. The vehicle also has ABS, a tire pressure monitoring system, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRAC), dual stage driver and passenger airbags, seat mounted driver and passenger side airbags, and side curtain airbags as standard features.
For 2008, a choice of three new head units made by Pioneer are available. All sound systems feature six speakers and standard iPod connectivity. The base head unit has MP3, WMA, and AAC CD compatibility, and Scion's SSP equalizer presets, as well as orange lighting. The Premium head unit has all the features of the base unit, but also has a small LCD that can display pictures and movies downloaded from Pioneer's website in addition to the features on the base unit and has two different lighting schemes, blue and orange. A navigation system is also available. The SNS 100 system can play DVD movies in addition to GPS functionality and the features of the base system, aside from the backlit color choices.
For 2010, a choice of two new head units made by Alpine are available. Also, the iPod connectivity has been revamped in the form of a USB port, along with an AUX jack located together, on the driver side of the vehicle. Previous model years with Pioneer had two separate inputs on both sides of the cigarette lighter/accessory plug, with the AUX jack port being on the driver side, and the iPod connectivity (specially made for Toyota) port located on the passenger side. The upgraded Alpine head unit features a touchscreen, and HD radio tuner, along with an optional Navigation system upgrade.
For the 2011 model year, the Scion xD received a minor change to the grille, and sales began in Canada with the launch of the Scion brand there. 2014 was the last model year for the xD, although leftover new cars continued to be sold in the US market until 2016.

- Summary: The rear axel beam on the vehicle cracked on the drivers side. It separated at a weld and caused the entire wheel assemble to lean inward (extreme negative camber) and rub against the wheel well. Fortunately I was off the highway when the incident occurred and barely made it safely to my work place. If this had happened at a greater speed I fear for what may have happened to myself and others. It is UNKNOWN if this problem has been reproduced in other circumstances. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer or police. It was inspected by an independent service provider (mechanic). It is available for additional inspection if needed. There was no warning, message or any other symptoms prior to the issue occurring.

- Summary: A major safety structural defect has developed in the rear axle beam. About 50 percent of the welds failed where the passenger side swing arm attaches to the rest of the axle. The lack of support ended up creating about a three inch stress crack across the width of the swing arm tube. This could have led to a complete failure of the swing arm, had I not found the problem. Had this failure occurred on the highway, it might have caused a serious accident. A month prior I started hearing a pop from the rear of the car each time I would back out of the driveway and the first time I went forward. I crawled under the car within about two weeks and checked things over but found nothing. I thought it might have been a coil spring shifting in its seat or a shock absorber with an internal problem. The noise continued and was getting a bit louder each time it occurred. I ended up lifting the back of the car and pulling the rear wheels. I first found the stress crack across the swing arm tube. Upon further inspection, I realized a portion of the welds had failed. The car is 14 years old and has 159k miles. There is rust that is contributing to the deterioration of the connection, yet the design of the swing arm and its connections seem as though they are barely sufficient when it was new. The design of the swing arm connections does not appear sufficient to be exposed to normal wear and tear of winter driving. In searching for a replacement part, this same exact swing arm is also used on the Toyota Prius C and a Yaris model. So this issue could be occurring on those models as well.

- Summary: There is a repetitive problem with mold and AC leaks with the Scion xD. I’m having breathing problems and I feel sick. Geico and Toyota have discovered mold in my vehicle. It is actually visible but I have no idea how long there has been a leak or how long I have been breathing in mold. The AC line is under the carpet with no protective barrier which is an ideal environment for mold to grow. When I looked up a way to fix the issue several videos came up with many others who have the same issue which means it is not a maintenance issue it is a defect that has never been recalled. Toyota has serviced my vehicle for years and never brought up this issue. I didn’t notice a problem until there was a pool of water in my car and mold growing on my seats. When I brought it in to Toyota they told me what the problem was instantly. They’ve seen it plenty of times before. When I looked online I see several owners of ScionxD made in different years with the same problem. How long has my car had this leak and how long have I been breathing in mold before it was visible to my eye? Seeing as there are so many Toyota Scion drivers/owners with this issue I am reporting it to NHTSA and calling Toyota Scion Corporate Headquarters. Corporate headquarters did nothing about the issue even after I expressed my concern for the children in danger of being exposed to mold who ride in these cars everyday. I am still breathing heavy and suffering from headaches. The Toyota dealership said it would cost $4400 to fix the entire issue. Why place a tube under a carpet without protection? I wish I was informed of this earlier.

I FLOORED BRAKES AND GOT VEHICLE TO SLOW TO 40MPH. PULLED BACK INTO MY LANE, BUT COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO GO ANY SLOWER. I FELT AS IF I WAS GOING TO HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. WITH TWO BIG TRUCKS BEHIND ME, I FEARED CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I PULLED OFF ONTO THE GRAVEL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND CONTINUED DRIVING. I COULD NOT STOP SO THREW IT INTO PARK AT 40 MPH. ENGINE MADE A HORRENDOUSLY LOUD NOISE AS IF IT WAS GOING TO BLOW UP. TURNED CAR OFF AND ON. MADE SAME AWFUL NOISE. TURNED CAR OFF, WAITED 10 MINS, TURNED BACK ON AND IT WAS FINE. AFTER THAT I LEARNED OF THE UNINTENDED ACCLERATION (UA) ISSUE THAT TOYOTA DEALT WITH AND THE 1.2 BILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENT FOR THE VICTIMS WHO HAD DIED OR WERE HARMED IN ACCIDENTS. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED AT THIS TIME AND MY ENGINE IS A TOYOTA COROLLA. I CALLED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS AND WAS TREATED RUDELY AND SCOFFED AT . I CALLED MANAGER TO REPORT. - Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Yaris vehicles manufactured August 22, 2005, through May 12, 2010, and 2008-2010 Scion xD vehicles manufactured April 4, 2007, through May 12, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the springs used for the seat rails on the driver's seat and the seat rails of the front passenger seat of three-door models may break.
- Consequence: If the spring breaks, the seat may not lock in position. In the event of a vehicle crash, the seat could move increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat rail, and replace it with a new one, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on July 3, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

After my car accident in my former Scion xA (where I hydroplaned at 60 mph, hit a guardrail and flipped over, yet walked away without a scratch), I had to go looking for another car. I wanted a car that was safe, reliable, and had great gas mileage. The xD was the perfect choice for me due to its unique style and great driving experience. It's rare to see another one on the road, and I average 37-40 mpg depending on where I'm driving. Its small design makes it extremely easy to move in and out of traffic, and its excellent crash test ratings and standard side airbags set my mind at ease. I plan on keeping this car for a long time.

This car has been a reliable daily driver for me, with a fuel efficiency of around 30mpg on the highway. While it may not be a luxury vehicle, it gets the job done. Although there have been some cosmetic issues with the paint, I have had no major mechanical problems, with only the alternator and spark plugs needing replacement. While it may struggle on steep inclines, I plan on keeping this car until it is no longer drivable. While it may not be the most comfortable for long road trips, it does have a surprisingly spacious trunk. Overall, I am confident in the reliability of this car and would recommend it as a practical choice for daily use.

I recently sold my BMW Z3 during tough financial times and purchased a Scion, which I absolutely love. Unfortunately, I experienced a flat tire while driving through the California desert just before a major holiday. While I don't blame Toyota for the flat tire, I was disappointed to find that the tire for my xD model was not available anywhere. I spent $60 on my cell phone calling every Costco, Sam's Club, Pep Boys, and WalMart in the heavily populated areas of Riverside and Orange Counties. If I had checked into a hotel to wait for a tire, it would have taken 5 days. In the end, I had to settle for a tire one size up just to get me home. I plan to discuss this issue with my Toyota dealership this week. If they are unable to help, I may reach out to my local consumer media for assistance.

I recently traded in my 2005 Ford Escape for a new xD, and I am absolutely thrilled with it! The gas mileage is fantastic - I drive about 10 miles every day to and from work, and I never get below 32 mpg. On longer trips, I get close to 40 mpg, if not more. I love everything about this car - the styling, performance, stereo, and more. I researched many other cars before settling on the xD, and I'm so glad I did. It offers great overall value and a standard list of features that can't be beat. Even though I switched from an automatic to a manual, I had no trouble adjusting to the gauges. The only extra thing I got were floor mats, which I'm very happy with. I couldn't be happier with my new xD!

In late 2012, my son was involved in a severe accident that resulted in the destruction of his car. Despite the severity of the accident, none of the airbags deployed, and injuries were sustained. I contacted Toyota/Scion to investigate the matter, and after several months, I received a response stating that the car had performed as intended. However, I requested a copy of the report to verify their claim. According to the report, the bumper, grill, hood, and various engine components were designed to absorb and lower much of the collision's forces, which prevented the airbags from deploying. Although I am not an auto engineer, the car was totaled, and the first responders at the scene were also concerned.

Hey there! I noticed that you've only driven your xd manual transmission car for about 500 miles. Overall, it seems like a good little car that's decent on MPG (about 33 on combined driving). I love that it has a lot of features and standard equipment that you would normally expect in higher priced cars. However, I was surprised to find out that it doesn't have a water coolant temp gauge. I totally understand why you went with a standard transmission, as in my experience, these little engines don't do very well with automatic transmissions. Even with the 5 speed, the car seems to be a little short on performance. At Interstate speeds, 70-75 MPH, there is what I think is a harmonic vibration that can be very annoying. Let me know if you need any help troubleshooting this issue!

Although the gas mileage is not meeting my expectations, I have been able to achieve 22.3 MPG in mostly city driving with some highway. However, I have noticed some issues with the dashboard rattling, which can be distracting. Additionally, there are some blind spots due to the wide front struts and bulky side mirrors, which can obscure pedestrians in crosswalks and vehicles approaching on the right. While I am disappointed with these aspects, I am still evaluating the car and considering my options. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This car has been nothing but trouble since I leased it new in 2011. I have had to replace 3 batteries, 2 leaking A/C lines, and now my CD player is eating my CDs. The brakes have also been slow to respond since I got the car. Despite having only 15,000 miles on it, it runs like it has 45,000. However, I am fortunate that Toyota is allowing me to end my lease early without penalties. This experience has shown me the importance of reliable mechanics in a car.

I commute the freeways of LA daily for over 65 miles one-way. I have been driving the Xd for over 6 months and have covered more than 10k miles. While the car is satisfying in some aspects, it can be a bit annoying at times, causing a classic cognitive dissonance. The power is decent, but not exceptional, and the gas mileage is average. The radio can be a bit frustrating to use, and the audio quality is so-so. However, in LA, having a radio is essential to survive those long commutes. The AC struggles to keep up on warm days on the 101 fwy, and it's not even summer yet! The car has only one cigarette lighter that is 'on' only with the ignition, which can be a bit inconvenient. Additionally, there is no armrest, and the road handling can be noisy and a bit annoying. It can be challenging to see the cup-holders in the dark, which can be frustrating. While there may be better vehicles available for the money, the Xd is still a decent option.
