Mitsubishi Mirage g4 problems

The Mitsubishi Mirage is a range of cars produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi from 1978 until 2003 and again since 2012. The hatchback models produced between 1978 and 2003 were classified as subcompact cars, while the sedan and station wagon models, marketed prominently as the Mitsubishi Lancer, were the compact offerings. The liftback introduced in 1988 complemented the sedan as an additional compact offering, and the coupé of 1991 fitted in with the subcompact range. The current Mirage model is a subcompact hatchback and sedan and it replaces the Mitsubishi Colt sold between 2002 and 2012.

Nameplate history

The Mirage has a complicated marketing history, with a varied and much convoluted naming convention that differed substantially depending on the market. Mitsubishi used the Mirage name for all five generations in Japan, with all but the first series badged as such in the United States. However, other markets often utilized the name Mitsubishi Colt and sedan variants of the Mirage have been widely sold as the Mitsubishi Lancer—including in Japan where the two retailed alongside one another. In Japan, the Mirage was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

In the United States and Canada, the first four generations were sold through a venture with Chrysler as the Dodge Colt and the similar Plymouth-badged Champ and Colt. Later, the venture brought the Eagle Vista and Summit branded models which sold alongside the aforementioned. Confusingly, Chrysler has also offered an unrelated Dodge Lancer at various stages between the 1950s and 1980s. However, when DaimlerChrysler briefly controlled Mitsubishi through the DaimlerChrysler-Mitsubishi alliance from 2000 through to 2004, the license to the "Lancer" name was relinquished to Mitsubishi for usage in North America. Thus, after the fifth and final generation Mirage, replacement models in North America have adopted the new name.

Mitsubishi introduced replacements for the fifth series of Mirage, starting in 2000 with a new generation of Lancer—now larger, having moved up to the compact segment. Then in 2002, a subcompact five-door hatchback badged Colt globally became available. By 2003, the Mirage and its derivatives had been completely phased out of mainstream Japanese production. For the 2002-era Colt's replacement in 2012, Mitsubishi decided to resurrect the Mirage name internationally for a new sixth generation model.

With the rising popularity of boxy subcompact SUVs in Japan, the Mirage nameplate was used on a domestic market-only model called the Mirage Dingo, from 1999. The Dingo was facelifted in 2001 and canceled in 2003. However, New Zealand sold a very different Mirage from 2002—a rebadged Dutch-manufactured Mitsubishi Space Star labeled Mirage Space Star. This vehicle was not very popular and was discontinued in 2003.

Common Mitsubishi Mirage g4 problems

The Mitsubishi Mirage G4, a compact sedan, has been praised by some owners for its fuel efficiency and convenient features. However, there have been common problems reported by other owners that are worth noting.

  • Electrical issues: Some Mitsubishi Mirage G4 owners have reported electrical problems with their vehicles. These issues can range from minor inconveniences, such as malfunctioning interior lights, to more serious problems, like failed distributors.
  • Opening and closing system difficulties: A few Mitsubishi Mirage owners have experienced trouble working with the opening and closing systems on their cars. This can include issues with doors, windows, or the trunk not functioning properly.
  • Braking system faults: Some owners have reported problems with the braking system on their Mitsubishi Mirage G4. This can include issues with the brakes not responding as expected or the brake pads wearing out prematurely.
  • Doors falling off: In some extreme cases, Mitsubishi Mirage owners have reported that their doors have fallen off the car. This is more common in older models, such as the 2000 Mirage, but it is still a concern for potential buyers.
  • Short lifespan: The Mitsubishi Mirage is not known for having a particularly long lifespan. According to getjerry.com, the Mirage is predicted to last between 130,000 and 150,000 miles, which is far below the 200,000 averages for most similar cars.

It is important to note that not all Mitsubishi Mirage G4 owners will experience these problems. Many owners have reported having positive experiences with their vehicles, with no major issues to report. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their decision.

  • Summary: On [XXX], I was traveling back to Colorado from Missouri. The weather conditions turned poor while I was traveling just west of Topeka, Kansas. I lowered my speed to below the speed limit and continued. At one point, the car lost control. At this time, it veered to left and hit hard against median. Smashing the driver side front end substantially. Airbags did not deploy at this time. My head smashed into the frame to the left of the steering wheel concussing me. (Diagnosed later by an ER Doctor, notes provided in upload) After hitting on the left median, the car then bounced across both lanes of the highway and smashed the concrete median of an overpass. On this second collision the airbags also did not deploy. Before 2023 was over or in the first few days of 2024 I notified Mitsubishi of the issue. They quickly sent me a company called: TM Claims Service, Inc. Out of Pasadena, California. I provided them all of the documentation months ago and have received no communication after they've received it. To my knowledge, there were no previous issues with the airbags or the system that runs them. If I had to estimate the first impact would have been between 50-60mph and the second at least 40-50mph. I could have easily been killed in this situation and I am disappointed in the handling of this. Note the Police Report is not as specific as this and implies one collision, as seen in the photos provided there were two. At this point I do not know where the vehicle is, as it almost been a year and I was trying to work with Mitsubishi on this. I do know if the airbags were inspected following. [XXX] is my correspondence trying to resolve this matter or have it further investigated. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: The 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 has been having long issues with swaying when going over 60 mph. I kept bringing it back to the Mitsubishi dealership and complaining but they kept saying they could not replicate the problem. One day on the highway, a few years after constantly complaining the right front tire made a sound and the whole car swayed to the left almost flipping over. Luckily I maneuvered off the highway into a grassy area on the side of the shoulder. Several cars avoided colliding with me. Even after the almost fatal incident and being towed, the dealership claimed the issue could not be replicated. Now out of nowhere, for a paint issue while the car was in the shop they determined they found the issue and it has to do with the sway bar and rear axle, and want to charge me $3,700.00

  • VIN: ML32FUFJXNH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Vehicle is available for inspection. Soon after I bought this car last April I realized it's VERY difficult to see how fast I am going in certain areas that are shadowed, especially on cloudy/overcast days. I have the lights set as bright as they will go but when I get in darker areas during the day I can just barely make out the tips to the 50/60 mph marks and a lot of times when it's cloudy overcast and I get in a darker spot I can't even SEE the tips of the 50/60 mph marks. Turning on the headlights doesn't help at all. I constantly have to "guess" what my speed is and that's a safety issue. I believe the problem stems from a combination of how far back the dash is set and the black cowl that protrudes out over the area. I think the area should be backlit like computer keys or somehow made to light up the way it does at night. I even tried to put some small LED lights in there but they were too dim to help. Another problem I have noticed with this car is that if I have my lights on I can't see my backup camera either, so if I want to back up in a parking garage or during a rainy day when I have my lights on, I first have to turn off my lights so I can use my backup camera.

The engine light didn’t come on til way later after the car wouldn’t work properly. This is all a hazard to the person driving bc of the car goes limp out of no where it can cause an accident bc it stops working like if it’s on neutral but in reality it’s in drive. Please help!! • Date Complaint: 2022-08-07
  • VIN: ML32FUFJ5NH
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Vehicle produces loud heavy mechanical noises after ignition and upon turning electric power steering. Steering wanders considerably from side to side on highway straight aways provoking constant need to compensate so as to keep vehicle properly centered within lane and producing considerable fatigue. Even greater noises coming from what sounds like bottom of engine bay when I recently applied heavy braking to negotiate a rather deep storm drain while approaching the factory authorized Mitsubishi repair station. The whole bottom of the vehicle sounded as if it was about to fall out from beneath the vehicle. It sounded and felt like serious Steering, drive train and suspension problems! Vehicle is available for inspection upon request considering a replacement vehicle be provided to assist me with frequent medical visits as I am seriously disabled with Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) and Chronic Lyme Disease and Immune Compromised health status (veteran). Possible multi systems failure including steering. Dealer said everything is OK to my surprise and shock. Problems first appeared on the first day of use July 6, 2022. Uncertain No warning lamps or indicators have turned on, just extremely loud noises and bad steering.

  • Summary: So after my car at about 2,000 miles on it my front strut mounts gave out I had them inspected and was told that they were bad the car was practically brand new I was having a lot of noise coming from the front end and I noticed that my car took a lot longer to brake than it should. And I believe that this is a safety concern because it shouldn't be going out that soon and the increased breaking distance associated with it increases the risk of accidents. And the strut mounts should not be bad from that early on. Also another problem that my vehicle has had that I haven't gotten diagnosed yet is there is a popping sound coming from the transaxle where the axle goes into the transmission and a delay in acceleration sometimes and other times my car randomly jolts forward. And I have to explanation as to why. And the third problem that I've had from about the same mileage as my car randomly not turning on though not a safety concern unless you really need to get somewhere it still shouldn't have that problem with so little miles and it's never been in an accident. I just remembered one other thing my car rolls if the parking brake is not on which I feel like that is a safety concern it will roll about a good four or five inches and it is really sketchy and it does not have enough mileage on it to be doing this and I have never been in an accident it started doing this around the same time all these problems arose around about 2,000 miles on my car and I have to have my e-brake on just to feel comfortable to park it and I have a friend who also has a Mitsubishi and hers doesn't do that and I feel like it has something to do with the popping sound in the transmission area.

My so 2 years is in the car as well and his safety as mine was put in jeopardy and is something that needs to be fixed right away. And needs to be first on recall list.

Latest negative Mitsubishi Mirage g4 car reviews

  1. Stuart Hamill 2025-05-06

    Vehicle year: 2018

When I was a young adult buying my first brand new car, I was drawn to this car because of its affordable price tag and gas savings. While it may not be the most luxurious car out there, it still has some great features. The car's tiny 3 cylinder engine accelerates pretty well and it doesn't get blown around as much as comparable hatchbacks. Although the interior may not be the most stylish, there is plenty of space between the seats. The touch screen radio could be brighter, but it still gets the job done. While the eco boost can be a bit unpredictable, this car is still a great purchase for first time new car owners. However, if you're looking for a car that you'll love driving for many years to come, you may want to consider other options.

  2. Joey Johnson 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2017

Maybe because the particular car I was given had sat in a warehouse for an undetermined amount of time, but I am not thrilled with this car in the least. It is quite loud, and the engine, however good on gas mileage it is, makes a lot of noise. All the time. It feels like the car is going to explode when you accelerate. It has some pep to it once you've reached freeway speeds, but it's not the best for overtaking maneuvers or getting onto the freeway. The engine is quite loud, so you may need to turn up the volume on your stereo to drown it out. Speaking of the radio, it turns off without warning. Having the car for 7 months, I've figured out that it doesn't like being hot - you can't park it somewhere on a warm day or in direct sunlight and expect the radio to turn on when you return to your car. If you are out running errands, let's say you go to the gas station, then the grocery store, then pick up your kids, then go to a park, by the 3rd time you turn the ignition, the radio will not come on. It's dead for hours. In addition to that, the gas gauge isn't accurate. I've filled the tank up on numerous occasions and watched 20-40 miles disappear on the digital display after driving less than ten miles total. I don't feel safe in this car, it's like driving a soda can. There are better cars available for the money.

  3. Jerrod Moore 2024-11-22

    Vehicle year: 2018

I really enjoy my car, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the radio. Despite having taken it back to the dealer five times, it keeps turning off and won't come back on. Additionally, the apple car play caused my phone to shut off and it won't turn back on. Although my radio has been replaced twice, I have only had my car for five months, and so I have had to make almost two-hour drives every month to get it fixed. Thankfully, I have a warranty. While the gas mileage is great in town, it is not as good on the interstate. The car struggles with hills and consumes a lot of gas when it has to go up one. I believe that the apple car play radio system needs to be removed from these cars as it is not reliable.

  4. Adan Bode 2024-11-21

I am sorry to hear about the issues you faced with your car. It must have been a scary experience to see it roll across the street and hit your neighbor's shed. It is disappointing that the manufacturer and the dealer did not provide the assistance you needed, especially since it was a new car with only 7,000 miles. It is understandable that you were frustrated and angry with the situation. I hope that you and your family were not hurt during this incident. It is unfortunate that you had to pay for the damages caused to your neighbor's shed. I can imagine how upsetting this must have been for you. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration to improve our customer service relations in the future.

  5. Emmet Haag 2024-11-18

The car has a few drawbacks such as poor acceleration and a noisy engine, but it is great on gas. Additionally, the technology is impressive.

    Vehicle year: 2022

Another update: We have put lots of additional miles on our Mirage G4 and have had no problems. The car consistently gets 42+ MPG in a mix of driving situations. Dollar for dollar, this is probably the best automotive value we have ever owned. While there is nothing particularly exciting about this car, unless squeezing every mile possible out of each penny in a surprisingly comfortable, utterly reliable little sedan excites you, we remain very pleased with our G4. In June 2020, I started a new job that required a 52 mile round trip commute. The G4 has been great for this purpose. We have had no repairs and low maintenance costs for the first 30K+ miles. The fuel economy is over 40 MPG in a barrier mix of urban, suburban stop and go, and highway driving. While the car is a bit loud when driving at highway speeds and when accelerating, this issue is offset by comfortable seating and a great ride quality for an economy car. We are very happy with our Mirage G4 SE. We wanted a car to run errands locally and (very rarely) to take an 80 mile round trip to visit relatives. We also needed the car to fit a tight parking situation and have a trunk that can hold a folding wheelchair. After looking at the Versa (dreadful unless optioned heavily) and the Yaris sedan (pretty good), we drove the G4 SE. The car rides better than the competition on typical suburban streets and has very comfortable seats. The SE trim includes upgraded seats and fabric as well as a driver’s armrest. The exterior is simple, but attractive. The pearl white paint on ours is quite nice. The upgraded alloy wheels on the SE also look good and come with larger tires than the ES trim level. Acceleration is slow unless you really stand on the gas pedal. The engine drones during moderate acceleration but takes on a surprising growl above about 4100 RPM. I have no trouble getting up to speed on short on-ramps, but highway passing requires a bit of advanced planning because 50 to 70 MPH acceleration is pretty slow. Fuel consumption is awesome!I am happy to report that I average 41 MPG in mixed driving and have seen 50+ MPG during extended highway driving. The car provides great visibility, with strong headlights and effective wipers that provide coverage of nearly the whole windshield. I was impressed with the snow traction, which is very good, and during the brutal cold of last winter, the car had no trouble starting at -22 f and the heat was adequate even at arctic temps. The A/C is also great. After one year of ownership, I have grown to like the car much more than when I first bought it. I have not experienced any problems or needed any repairs during the first year, and maintenance is cheap. Overall, I believe this car is a great value for the money and we couldn’t be more pleased.

This is a cute little car, but it has been a bit disappointing. Other cars in this class have better gas mileage and acceleration. Although it takes a while to accelerate, once it gets going, it performs well, especially on the highway. The motor is louder than expected, and I have noticed some brake squeaking after only one month of use. This should not happen on a brand new 2020 vehicle. While the gas mileage is okay, it could be better. I hope Mitsubishi can improve this little car to be more like a Fit or a Versa. I am rebuilding my credit, so I plan to keep this car for at least a year, but I may trade it in later.

This car has everything you need in a vehicle: simplicity, comfort, style, and great value for your money. I switched from a minivan that could seat five kids to this car, which comfortably seats myself and three kids who are still at home. I am extremely pleased with my Mirage G4 SE, and the savings on gasoline are amazing! This leaves me with more money for entertainment :) I highly recommend the Evansville IN dealership, which deserves five stars. Judy Goad recommended Greg Roberts and Chris Parker, who were both fantastic.

I recently purchased a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE CVT in Wine Red and I absolutely love it! I traded in my 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES CVT with Navigation and the updates on the 2017 model are extensive. The interior has so many upgrades, such as seat fabric material, interior piano trim, seat support, sound insulation, new gauge cluster, new steering wheel, new audio unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 4 more horsepower and a new roller cam shaft, new suspension updates, smoother idle, fender insulation, heated seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, wide-angle rearview camera (G4), rear fold-down armrest with cup holders, and even the way the shifter feels going into gear is much smoother. The updates are amazing and make this car feel more substantial. I opted for the Light Gray interior, which adds a level of class to the interior, and I will be adding the Mitsubishi Center Console Armrest for $138.95 (my 2015 had it installed). The room inside the G4 is unreal, it's huge, and the trunk is cavernous! I also love the dark chrome alloy wheels and matching front grill. The Wine Red paint color is so unique and classy looking. I had no issues with my 2015 and only traded it in for the upgrades and the great deal I got on this 2017 Top Trim G4 SE. It was originally priced at $18,115.00, but I was able to get it for $12,714.00 at Renn Kirby Mitsubishi in Frederick, MD. You should definitely check out their deals! If you do, be sure to see Tommy Moberly. He sold us our 2016 Outlander Sport GT and our 2017 Mirage G4 SE and was amazing. While driving in town, the ride is much quieter and takes bumps with less of a thud, and the idle is 50% smoother and quieter. The seats feel extra stuffed and the material is definitely much more premium feeling. The Apple CarPlay alone is one of my favorite features, and I give props to Mitsubishi for incorporating it! Mitsubishi cars are very reliable, and they have been making 3-cylinder engines forever, which last a very long time with cheap maintenance.Keep up the good work Mitsubishi because I am impressed with the updated 2017 model Mirage and Mirage G4!!!

I have owned four of these cars, two hatchbacks and two sedans. One of them was a 5-speed manual, while the rest had the CVT. I only had to make a warranty claim once, for a cracked armrest on the door. The manual transmission is more fun to drive and gets better MPG, but if you want a loaded car, you are forced to get the CVT. Despite negative reviews from online reviewers such as Consumer Reports, Kelley Blue Book, and Edmunds, Mirage owners give it one of the highest consumer satisfaction ratings among its class. Why is this? Well, Mirage owners understand what this car is about: great MPG without the expense of buying a hybrid, great warranty, above-average reliability, great safety ratings, cheap car to insure and maintain, and a smooth ride. The Mirage offers great value for the money, and no other car manufacturer can come close on price. For example, the Nissan Versa was $3645.00 more expensive and had half the warranty. Don't pay attention to the sticker price; find out what the dealer is willing to sell it for. If your main concern is going from point A to point B, no one can do it cheaper than a Mirage. My big concern now for Mitsubishi is that Nissan owns the majority share. Hopefully, Nissan leaves Mitsubishi alone!
