Mercury Capri problems
Capri (later Mercury Capri) is a nameplate marketed by the Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford Motor Company over three generations between 1970 and 1994.
From 1970 to 1978, the Capri was a sport compact marketed in North America by the Lincoln-Mercury division without any Ford or Mercury divisional branding; it was a captive import, manufactured by Ford of Europe and sold simply as the Capri. From 1979 to 1986, the second generation Capri became part of the Mercury model line as a U.S. built pony car. From 1991 to 1994, the third generation Mercury Capri was a roadster manufactured by Ford Australia and marketed outside North America as the Ford Capri.
In North America, the first and third generations of the Capri were marketed without a direct Ford-brand counterpart but were sold in other markets under the Ford brand.

Common Mercury Capri problems
The Mercury Capri is a popular car model that has been around for several decades, and like any other car, it has its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most common issues that Mercury Capri owners have reported:
- Inside Door Pull Handle Breaks: This problem is specific to the Mercury Capri and is caused by the design of the door pull handle. The handle is made of plastic, and over time, it becomes brittle and breaks. This issue is not a safety concern, but it can be frustrating for the car owner. The only solution is to replace the broken handle with a new one.
- Water Leaks from Convertible Top: This problem is common in Mercury Capri convertibles. The top of the car is made of fabric, and over time, it wears out, causing water leaks. This issue can be fixed by replacing the convertible top or repairing the damaged area. However, it is an expensive repair, and it is recommended to take the car to a professional for this repair.
- Sudden Engine Problems: Mercury Capri owners have reported sudden engine problems, especially in the 1991-94 models. These problems are often caused by moisture in the engine compartment, which affects the electrical system. This issue can cause the car to stutter or hesitate, especially after sitting overnight or in wet conditions. The best solution is to let the car idle for a few minutes to dry off any moisture before driving.
- Fuel Pump Shut Down: The Mercury Capri's automatic fuel pump will shut down if the car is lightly bumped by another car or a bad pothole. This issue was a safety feature, but it can be frustrating for the car owner. The solution is to open the rear trunk and press the red button to activate the fuel pump again. If the problem persists, the fuel pump may need to be replaced.
- Radiator Cracks: Many Mercury Capris now need their radiators replaced because the plastic tops are cracked and leaking. This issue can be fixed by replacing the radiator with a new one. However, it is recommended to search online for an OEM metal radiator that is a perfect fit for a lower cost.
- Electronic Ignition Failure: The electronic ignition can fail suddenly, causing the car not to start. This issue can be caused by a faulty ignition coil or a damaged wiring harness. The solution is to replace the faulty part with a new one.
- Engine Will Not Rev Up Past 3000 RPM: This issue is common in the 1993 Mercury Capri. The engine will not rev up past 3000 RPM, slows down, and makes a horrible sound. This issue can be caused by a faulty throttle body sensor, a dirty air filter, or a failing fuel pump. The solution is to check the air filter box, clean the intake, check the exhaust, and check the woodruff key. If all else fails, it may be necessary to replace the fuel filter or the fuel pump.
In conclusion, the Mercury Capri is a great car, but like any other car, it has its common problems. These issues can be frustrating for the car owner, but most of them can be fixed with simple repairs or replacement of faulty parts. It is recommended to take the car to a professional for any major repairs.
Is the Ford Capri reliable?
The Australian-built Capri was intended primarily for export to the US. Exports began in 1991, as the Mercury Capri. When the car was new, it had a poor reputation for reliability, although many still exist today perhaps due to the mechanical robustness of the Laser/323 upon which it was based.
Are Mercury Capris rare?
For enthusiasts, this Fox Body-based Mercury is far rarer than Mustangs, making it an exciting collector's vehicle.
Did the Mercury Capri have a V8?
During its production, the second-generation Capri maintained powertrain commonality with the Ford Mustang, with inline-four, inline-6, V6, and V8 engines offered during its production; the only Mustang model with no Capri equivalent was the Mustang SVO.
What is the top speed of the 1991 Mercury Capri?
But a 4-speed overdrive automatic is optional the engine is not as smooth or quiet has some fours on the market. But it's not obtrusive either. And the XR 2 is pretty sprightly.

This is such a fun little car to drive with lots of pep! The Mazda engine performs great. I've driven this car for 30,000 miles over the past couple of years and haven't had any major issues, just some minor interior trim pieces that broke. Overall, it's a great car for the money!

I'm so glad you're interested in my little convertible! I bought it used back in '97 with about 45K miles on it. Unfortunately, the dealer wasn't very forthcoming about the fact that the car had been in a wreck. Despite that, I'm only the second owner, and for the first three years, the vehicle was completely trouble-free. While the body construction is a bit flimsy and dents easily, the handling, pick-up, comfort, and maintenance are all worth overlooking this minor flaw. And let's not forget the gas mileage - it gets over 30 mpg in the city and who knows what on the highway! With regular oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, and other routine maintenance, this car has been a great investment. I've been more than pleasantly surprised by how well it's held up over the years!

I purchased this car on 5/01 with 80k miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had to spend $700 on repairs every 4 months since then. The car has been a headache since day one. Here is a list of parts that I have had to replace: the entire exhaust up to the catalytic converter, 2 brake rotors, the alternator and belts, water pump, radiator, driver side window regulator, thermostat, and the sensor. Just yesterday, the automatic transmission stopped functioning. I have decided to junk the car and look for a more reliable one, or at least one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix. It seems like every part has to be special ordered or custom installed.

I inherited my XR2 from my dad, who bought it new in '91 upon retirement. It has less than 12K miles on it! He recently replaced the top, but the driver's headlight doesn't pop-up, the door locks are questionable, and the interior quality control is sorely lacking. However, it's in great shape overall. It's really fun to drive, but there is considerable turbo lag and front-wheel drive, so it tends to oversteer. Installing wider, stickier tires and a strut brace will help. It looks nice with the top down, but the tiny wheels and skinny tires give it a dorky appearance. I'm currently looking for 15-inch, 7-spoke rims from '94s. I also have a '94 Mazda RX7, which is a real sports car! The XR2 is more of a sporty econobox with a soft top. Surprisingly, it's comfortable, roomy, and has a good ride. The drop top is easy to use, and the trunk is large for a small car. It also gets awesome gas mileage at 30+ mpg on the highway, although the brakes are a bit spongy.

I absolutely loved owning my Capri for 11 years! It was such a fun and maneuverable car, and surprisingly comfortable for its size. While I did experience some mechanical issues, the car was generally reliable. The only downside was the poor quality automatic transmission, which unfortunately remained a problem even after repairs. The front seating area was spacious enough for long legs, but taller individuals may struggle with headroom. The back seat was a bit cramped, but still manageable for short trips with the top down. It's worth noting that body work can be quite expensive. Despite these minor issues, the heater and air conditioner worked extremely well for most of the car's life. Overall, the Capri was an incredibly enjoyable little car, especially considering its initial price.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it in May of 2010 for $800 with only 78k miles and it was in good shape inside and out. The engine was clean as can be! Although the top was bad, I was able to find a replacement on eBay for a really cheap price, so now it looks great. I've driven over 23k miles in less than a year and the only issues I've had were having to replace the fuel pump (which was my fault) and a wheel bearing. Despite only having 100hp, the transmission is geared out to have decent pick up. It runs really smoothly at 70mph on I95 and with the top down, you can barely tell you're in a convertible. Thanks for listening!
