The Infiniti QX80 (formerly called the Infiniti QX56 until 2013) is a full-size luxury SUV marketed by Nissan's luxury division Infiniti. The first-generation QX56 was built in the United States and is based on the first-generation Armada. The second-generation model was released in 2010 as a model produced in Japan, which used the sixth-generation Patrol (later also marketed as the second-generation Armada since 2016) as the base vehicle instead. Since the 2014 model year in 2013, the vehicle was renamed to the QX80 as Infiniti renamed their entire product line under a new nomenclature.
First generation (JA60; 2004)
The first-generation QX56 (model code JA60) is based on the first-generation Armada, while also sharing the F-Alpha platform with the first-generation Titan. It is the first Infiniti built in the United States. The QX56 was only marketed in the United States, Canada, Russia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Development on the JA60 QX56 began in early 2000 alongside the WA60 Armada. A final design by Masato Takahashi was reached in early 2001, with an August 2001 design freeze for early 2004 start of production.
The rear door handles were installed on the C-pillar as a Nissan design tradition started with the D21 Pathfinder released in 1985 to visually make it appear like a two-door truck with a camper shell, with conventional door handles on the front doors.
The first-generation QX56 was powered by a 5.6-liter VK56DE V8 engine (320 hp (239 kW) at 4,900 rpm and 393 lb⋅ft (533 N⋅m) torque at 3,600 rpm) and a 5-speed automatic transmission with an overdrive. As is common with aluminum blocks, each cylinder in the engine was lined with cast iron. The valvetrain was a DOHC design with four valves per cylinder. Infiniti designed the QX56's throttle responsiveness to correspond to specific drivetrain modes: when the driver selects all-wheel drive, the throttle becomes less sensitive, presumably to allow easier regulation of acceleration when off-road.
The QX56 had around 9,000 lb (4,082 kg) of towing capacity. Mileage at peak performance drain is 12 miles per US gallon (20 L/100 km; 14 mpg‑imp). It comes in one trim level, with only key options such as: DVD entertainment system, 4WD/2WD, and a bench instead of captain chairs as the second row. Other features which came standard were a ten-speaker Bose system, DVD-based navigation system, leather trim for all seats, dual-climate control, 18-inch chrome alloy wheels, and an adaptive cruise control system. A Precrash system was a unique feature in the market as well.
Since the demise of the Q45 (which was priced above the QX56) after 2006, the QX56 was the most expensive Infiniti sold in North America and was Infiniti's only full-size vehicle.
In early 2007 for the 2008 model year, the Infiniti QX56 received a minor facelift which included a revised grille, a redesigned interior, a new intelligent key system, more standard equipment, new third-row seats that fold electronically and standard 20-inch chrome wheels. Introduced at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in January 2007, the facelifted model went on sale in April 2007.
After the 2010 model year, the QX56 and Armada no longer share the same body, as the first-generation Armada continued to be produced in the United States until the 2015 model year, while the second-generation QX56 switched to the body used by the Y62 Patrol.

- Summary: The primary instrument gauge for the QX80 starts to lose illumination from around the speedometer and tachometer. The vehicle has 55,000 miles and is a 2018 model. This is the SECOND time this has happened, with the instrument gauge being replaced first at approximately 32,000 miles for the same reason. Currently the instrument gauge is continuing to lose lighting - making the speedometer impossible to see at night (SAFETY ISSUE). Infiniti Dealership reports that there is a +/- 2 YEAR waitlist for replacement instrument clusters, and that this is a known problem. The same dealership that replaced it a few years ago. This 2nd instrument cluster started going out in the 20-45 mph segment, then 6500-8000 rpm tach, then 0-20 mph.

- Summary: The plastic trim on the steering wheel that is colored to match the other plastic trim in the car has cracked at the 2:00 clock position. The cracked plastic sometimes lifts when turning the wheel which I feel may cause an accident. I have not had it inspected by the dealer of manufacturer as I'm aware they won't repair it currently. There were no symptoms before it happened, it was just cracked/separated one day. Nissan/Infiniti should be required to repair this potential safety issue.

- Summary: The most glaring safety issue caused by below is the SUV will try to move forward on its own while stopped and the brakes pressed that can potentially cause a fender bender. Infiniti/Nissan 5.6L engines have a history of failed or failing viscous cooling fan clutches. This goes back over a decade based on the TSG released by NISMO. When the viscous fan begins to fail, the most glaring symptom is that ECM will compensate by revving up the engine RPM...specially with the AC on. This can cause the RPM to go from around 500 to 1000 RPM during an RPM surge. The surge is enough to move the SUV forward at a stop unless the brake is firmly pressed. On hot weather days, this risk is frequent and significant at a top. This viscous fan issue also puts signficant load on the engine and causes significant power loss to the drive train. This issue does not cause any type of "check engine" light since it is strictly a mechanical failure of the mechanism containing the fluids in the viscous assembly.

Instead they are seeking nearly $4k in repair work. The torque converter should last up to 200k miles and my car started having this issue around 65k miles. Ive escalated to Infiniti HQ and they will not listen to my complaint and continually are telling me there is not a recall. This recall needs to be put into place for model year 2019, the issue is NOT fixed!

- Summary: The airbag system in my recently purchased (4 months ago)QX80 Infiniti 2015 is malfunctioning/failed. It is available for inspection upon request. The warning light came on within 2 months of my purchase. I took it to the dealerships for repair, was told “this is unusual for this age car & mileage” stating it was the driver curtain airbag module which I paid a large amount to have replaced. When I received the car back, the warning light was no longer on. A month & a half later, the warning light returned. Took it back to the same dealership where I am now told that when it was repaired prior it was merely a guess as to the problem & that now a different part of the system needs replacing (airbag diag system) “in hopes of this being the issue” There is also an accompanying hefty price for this repair. But I was also told (at this juncture) that if this part replacement did not take care of the problem, the next step would be to replace the airbag wiring harness which would cost $7,500.00 (total for all these “repairs” would be above $12,500) If they believe they had repaired the problem with the first repair, why do they not start there? Is/was my driver’s side airbag system working after the first repair or not or was the warning system just reset? I’m concerned that if they only can “believe” they have fixed the problem, how can I be assured that the system IS REPAIRED & will work in case of an accident? Did the system actually “work” with the first repair only to stop working or then oddly another component stop working a month & a half later? I was not able to be assured that even if the harness (most expensive repair of the 3) is replaced that this would actually take care of the problem either. I was told this is the “next step” in the Infiniti step decision tree. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE. I have looked for recall info but have not found any recalls. I am wanting to know if this problem/issue has been reported before on this make/model/year vehicle. Thank you

- Summary: While waiting in a parking lot, I was reviewing the settings available on the lower center display, one of those options was for "Camera." Inside this menu I found and made adjustment for options like brightness, contrast, tint, color, and black level... and while most of those seemed to work well, and I was able to make suitable adjustments to the camera--the tint and color options seemed to have no effect on the image. So, I opted to adjust tint from the default/middle value all the way to the left/lowest value and save the settings. Even then, with that saved, I was able to switch to the camera and could see there was no difference in the image still. I then remained with the vehicle, still parked with the engine idling, waiting another ten minutes or so before preparing to leave. When I put my vehicle in reverse gear, I was shocked to see that the camera displays had gone completely black. I could no longer see the rear images when backing up. I tried going back to park and again to the rear setting--still, there was no image being displayed for the cameras. I could see some items on-screen still, like the button to switch camera views and to toggle the parking sensors on/off. When switching camera views/angles, the system would continue displaying the same two black/empty displays. I tried turning the engine off and back on--but that didn't seem to have any effect, the system remained broken. I was able to use the rear view camera on the reviewer mirror--but the normal backup cameras remained non-functioning. I promptly tried opening the camera settings again to reset all of the brightness, contrast, tone, color, and black level settings to the default values... but still, the preview area was black and no image could seen. I've verified the outside of the vehicle... these cameras are not blocked at all. There was nothing that could've cause these to go dark. I drive the vehicle home (~5 miles), and found the camera still not to be working.

I love my Infiniti QX80! It's the perfect vehicle for driving my three children around all day. I feel safe and secure in it, and it's my second one because I traded in my older model for a newer one. I had no issues with my previous QX80 after owning it for three years.

This is my fifth INFINITI product, and I have had many of their smaller cars and SUVs in the past, and I have always been very happy with them. I decided to get something bigger for family use so that we could travel comfortably. The ride quality and interior are excellent, and the safety systems work great! Reliability is what keeps me coming back to the brand, as all of my INFINITI products have been flawless! This is a very comfortable long-distance cruiser, and the rear seat entertainment is easy to use. The heated/cooled seats work quickly, and the leather quality is good and resistant to discoloration (I have the wheat-colored quilted leather). Overall, the only downside is that the technology is badly outdated, but it still does the basics. Gas mileage is predictable for a large naturally aspirated V8, and the sound it makes is great with strong, smooth acceleration! Overall, I would buy again as this is an excellent luxury family do-everything proper (truck-based) SUV!

Great SUV! I've owned Mercedes, Escalate, BMW and a Tahoe, but by far this one is the best I've owned. The gas mileage is what you would expect from a large 400HP engine, but I have no complaints. It's really comfortable and easy to drive around town, and it doesn't feel big at all.

When the outside temperature is between 40 and 60 degrees and the vehicle climate control is set to Auto, the center and floor vents tend to run 15 to 20 degrees warmer than the other vents, which can be quite uncomfortable. To avoid sweating feet, the outside vents need to be closed and the interior temperature should be controlled by the center and floor vents. However, this can make your arm closest to the door feel cold when the outside temperature is in the 40s, unless you are wearing a jacket. I brought the issue to the attention of the dealer I purchased the vehicle from, but they kept it for 4 days and told me that it was normal. I decided to take the matter to another Infinity Dealer and presented them with temperature gauges and photographs of the outside air temperature readings and interior controls to illustrate the temperature difference between vents. The service adviser was great and contacted the Infinity Rep, who validated my concern. However, after another 24 hours without my vehicle, the answer from Infinity was that all the QX80s have the same issue and it is normal. While this may be normal for the QX80, I have not experienced a 20 degree split between vents in my Lexus or Toyota, or any other vehicle I have owned. Although this is a great vehicle, if you live in a four-season climate, you will need to compensate for this climate control anomaly twice a year. I would think that the fix would be straightforward, either a sensor or software issue. The climate control issue may make me consider a different vehicle when the time comes for another SUV. As for the gas issue described in another review, I have found it to be accurate - the amber light illuminates after using around 19 gallons. However, this does not bother me now that I know that at 15mpg, there are only 105 miles left in the tank if you drive easy. I generally fill all my vehicles at 1/4 tank.

If you're looking for a stylish and comfortable vehicle to move people or tow something, this is a great option. However, if you're someone who enjoys weekend trips to the cabin with all your gear and family, this may not be the best fit for you. I previously owned a 2008 QX56, which was one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. It was incredibly comfortable, versatile, and had plenty of storage space. Comparing it to the QX80, I noticed that the storage areas in and around the cabin are smaller. The rear storage cu. ft. is reduced, and it's not as easy to remove the 2nd row center console for pet beds or to put long items in through the rear. Additionally, the rear seats don't fold completely flat, which can be inconvenient for storage. Infiniti also reduced the hideaway storage in the back, which was useful for storing things like trailer hitches and straps. Some other design choices, like putting the heated steering wheel button in a hard-to-reach spot, seem a bit odd. The rear entertainment system only has one HDMI input, which means that kids can only watch one thing at a time from their phones or other devices. Finally, the oversized knob for switching into 4wd is located by the shifter, while the control knob for the menu system on the dash is harder to reach. Overall, the QX80 is a great vehicle, but it may not be the best fit for everyone's needs.Removing the trailer hitch cover could be made easier with some re-engineering. The performance is impressive, with substantial power and great fit and finish. While the shifting may not be as smooth as expected, it is still manageable and something to get used to. Getting in and out of the vehicle may not be as easy as the old QX56, and the seat adjustments and smaller mirrors can make backing up with trailers a bit more challenging.

I had the pleasure of driving the QX80 for a weekend as a rental, and I must say, it was a very comfortable ride. The interior is luxurious and the car is well-designed. However, I did notice that the car is based on a 10-year-old platform, which may make it feel a bit outdated. Additionally, I was surprised to find that some features were missing, such as air-conditioned seats, heated rear seats, an entertainment system, and a standard audio system. While these may seem like small details, they are important to consider when purchasing a car in this price range. Overall, I think the QX80 is a great car, but there are some areas where it could be improved. If you're looking for a more affordable option, the Armada may be a better choice for you.

When I start to pull out of the garage in the morning, the motor revs up before pulling out. The dealer says that this is standard for this car. Additionally, when I turn the steering wheel either way, I feel a shudder. The dealer says that the tire tread is causing that and they don't warranty tires. Lastly, the rear axle assembly started to howl and they say they can't tell where the noise is coming from and won't repair any of these issues. It's disappointing to experience these issues with a car that only has 2200 miles on it. It's important to me that these issues are resolved, and I hope we can work together to find a solution. We've had this vehicle for about 5 months now and due to Covid, we've only driven about 5000 miles. We've noticed an issue with the cruise control, which has also been described by others here. When cruising at around 70 mph, the engine is running smoothly at under 2000RPM. However, when there's a slight incline in the road, the gearbox kicks down two gears and the engine revs up to over 5000RPM! It's a bit odd and disconcerting, and the mechanic at the dealer felt the same way. However, Infiniti has issued a directive stating that this is a normal operating characteristic of the vehicle that has been reported in multiple cases, so no further diagnosis should be performed. Other than that, it's a great truck if you can live with the size and fuel economy. The only other issue we've noticed is that the fuel gauge will indicate empty, but when you fill up, it only takes 20 gallons. The spec sheet says the size of the fuel tank is 26, so it signals empty with 6 gallons left in the tank.
