Ford Focus rs problems

ford logo

The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.

Naming

The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.

First generation (C170; 1998)

Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.

Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.

In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.

For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus rs problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Ford Focus RS, common problems with this car include:

  • Build Quality Concerns: Some owners have complained about the build quality of the car, citing issues such as loose seat rails, HVAC system problems, and rattling interior components. While the performance-focused nature of the Focus RS may have led to compromises in interior quality, these issues can still be a concern for some buyers.
  • Ride Quality: Another common complaint is related to the ride quality of the Focus RS. Due to its performance-oriented design, the car may offer a rougher ride, which might not be suitable for those seeking a more comfortable driving experience. It's important to note that the Focus RS prioritizes performance over road-trip comfort.
  • Engine Issues: The unique 2.3-litre Ecoboost four-cylinder engine used in the Focus RS has been associated with reliability problems. Issues such as cooling system failures, leaks causing overheating, and the use of incorrect head gaskets leading to coolant circulation problems have been reported. In some cases, engine replacements have been necessary due to these issues.
  • Suspension and Comfort: The firm suspension with limited travel in the Focus RS can make city driving and journeys on bumpy roads uncomfortable. Additionally, the Recaro seats, while sporty, may not offer the level of comfort expected for daily driving. These factors highlight the car's focus on performance rather than everyday comfort.

These problems highlight the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance when considering purchasing a used Ford Focus RS to avoid potential costly repairs and ensure a satisfactory ownership experience.

Latest positive Ford Focus rs car reviews

  1. Zander Prosacco 2024-08-18

    Vehicle year: 2016

I absolutely love this car and everything it offers up front, but I must admit that my opinion may be biased. If you're considering this car, be aware that the seats may take some getting used to, especially if you're accustomed to less supportive seats. The gas mileage is not the best, but that's to be expected when you're having fun in a hot hatch. One major highlight of this car is its resale value, which is particularly noteworthy given that Ford is no longer producing these cars in the states. All in all, if you're looking for a hot hatch, you likely already know what you want, and this car is definitely worth considering.

When I was there, I told the manager that I had an Edmunds certificate for a price on the car, and they honoured the price. Next thing I knew, I was driving it back home the next day, once I got approval on my loan!

  3. Darrin Jaskolski 2024-03-20

    Vehicle year: 2016

I'm adding to my original review, which still stands. I wanted to share that I added a Cobb tune for 93 octane and high flow air filter that improved performance, drivability and gas mileage. The launch control feature is amazing and makes you feel like a pro. If you're feeling adventurous, you can put the computer in drift mode and turn off the traction control completely to experience real drifting. Just make sure you find a safe and wet parking lot to play around with this option. I say wet because the Michelin Pilot Sport Two tires are so sticky on dry pavement that it's easier to drift on wet pavement. At $290/tire, they last a lot longer, allowing for more fun. The fun factor is off the charts! The RS delivers practicality and high performance in a neat package. With four doors and a hatchback with folding rear seats, it turns into a small van that can carry a ton of odd shaped items and luggage. It can outrun cars costing twice as much on the track and is a great daily driver. Gas mileage is very good overall, but premium fuel is required. Safety is outstanding with a great level of electronic nannies to keep the all-wheel drive under control at all times. Traction is incredible and braking is immediate and linear. The ride is a bit stiff even in standard mode, but personally, I don't mind it and no one has complained when riding along. The balance is perfect. The seats are comfortable, and I am 6'5
