Chevrolet G van problems

The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common Chevrolet G van problems

The Chevrolet G20, a popular choice for full-sized vans, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners.

  • EGR Valve Issues: A bad or disconnected EGR valve can cause knocking in the engine, particularly under specific throttle conditions. This issue is often caused by the ECM adjusting timing and fuel mixture when it recognizes an EGR fault.
  • Bad Hinges and Rust: The G20 is known for having issues with bad hinges, rust, a worn transmission (if abused), and front-end wear. These issues are common in older models and can lead to significant problems if not addressed promptly.
  • Computer/ECM Problems: Computer issues, such as problems with the ECM, can cause no-start conditions in the G20. Replacing the computer or related components may be necessary to resolve these issues.
  • Fuel Pressure Regulator Issues: Low fuel pressure in the line running to the throttle body can indicate a problem with the fuel pressure regulator. This issue can cause no-start conditions and may require rebuilding or replacing the regulator.
  • Spider Injection System: The spider injection system in some G20 models is known to be problematic. Leaks and other issues with this system can cause intermittent problems and may require replacement.

These common problems with the Chevrolet G20 can lead to significant downtime and costly repairs if not addressed promptly. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify these issues early and prevent more significant problems from developing.

WE WERE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED. THE AIR BAG CAUGHT MY LEFT LEG WHICH WAS CROSSED OVER MY RIGHT LEG AT THE TIME. I HAD TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR A DAMAGED LEG AND KNEE. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO GATES CHEVY WORLD IN SOUTH BEND INDIANA. THE VIN NUMBER WAS CHECKED AND FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NEVER IN ANY TYPE OF ACCIDENT. GATES PULLED THE FRONT DRIVER SEAT OUT AND THE UNDERLAY ON THE FLOOR AND FOUND THAT THE CONTROL BOX HAD DETERIORATED AND MAY HAVE SET THE AIR BAG OFF. THEY SAID THEY WERE GOING TO CALL FOR A TECHNICIAN FROM GM BUT NEVER DID. THEY SAID THIS HAD HAPPENED TO ONE OTHER VAN IN THE AREA. THEY FELT IT WASN'T THEIR FAULT THAT OWNERS ARE SUPPOSE TO TAKE OUT THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, TAKE OUT THE FACTORY INSTALLED UNDERLAY AND ROUTINELY DRY OUT ALL OF THE CHEVY COMPONENTS BY (HAIR DRYER OR DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN THE AIR )???? I DIDN'T READ THAT IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. THE VEHICLE IS IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION AND HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF. I CHECKED MY OTHER CAR MANUALS AND HAVE NOT READ WHERE WE ARE SUPPOSE TO BE AIRING VEHICLES OUT. THE VEHICLE IS A COMPANY WORK VEHICLE THAT WE HAVE LOST THE SERVICE OF FOR OVER 4 MONTHS. I STILL HAVE MEDICAL BILLS AND FUTURE MEDICAL BILLS FROM MY ANKLE. I HAVE FILED AN ASSISTANCE CLAIM # 71-527802216 WITH CHEVROLET. THE INITIAL PERSON, PEGGY CLARK, NEVER ASSISTED ME AND NEVER RETURNED CALLS. SHE HAD AN ASSISTANT DO SO, WHO WAS UNAWARE OF ALL THE INFORMATION I SENT,THAT THEY HAD REQUESTED. A CHRISTINE GRISWOLD TOOK OVER AND MOVED THE ASSISTANCE FORWARD. HOWEVER I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM CHEVY IN 2 WEEKS. WE ARE LOSING MONEY AND FAITH IN OUR DOMESTIC CAR COMPANY. HELP, SOMEONE! WHY DO WE NEED A LAWYER FOR THIS? *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-12-17
  • Date Complaint: 2003-12-28
  • VIN: 1GNFG15R1X1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MAJOR DESIGN FLAWS IN THE ECM MODULE ENCLOSURE AND LOCATION OF ECM IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAUSE PREMATURE AND CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. PERMANENT DAMAGE TO WIRING HARNESS ALSO OCCURS DUE TO WATER INTRUSION COMPLICATED BY ROAD SALT CONTAMINATION OF HARNESS CONNECTORS AND WIRING. ELECTRONIC PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS IN THE ECM BECOME EXPOSED TO ROAD SPRAY AND WHICH ALLOWS WATER TO POOL WITHIN THE ECM MODULE'S CASING. AFTER EVAPORATING, THIS WATER WILL LEAVE BEHIND THE ROAD SALTS THAT WERE IN SOLUTION CAUSING A BUILDUP OF SAME UNTILL UNIT FAILS. THESE CONDITIONS WILL BE FOUND ON NUMEROUS VEHICLES IN FREEZING/THAWING CYCLIC REGIONS. RECENTLY GM ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN THAT ACKNOWLEGES THIS PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, IT DOES NOT EFFECTIVLY REACH OUT TO THE OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLE WHO MAY HAVE TOTAL ENGINE CONTROL FAILURE OCCUR UNDER THE WORST OF WEATHER CONDITIONS THEREBY CREATING A REAL COLLISION SAFETY HAZARD. *AK

  • Summary: I OWN A 1997 CHEVY CUSTOMIZED VAN. I HAVE JUST HAD TO HAVE MY TRANSMISSION REBUILT WITH JUST 79,000 MILES. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT MECHANICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE VAN, MOST DURING THE WARRANTY PERIOD. I'VE REPLACED 2 STARTERS, 2 FUEL PUMPS, 1 SPEEDOMETER, 3 BATTERIES, AND FUEL LEAKS OVER THE YEARS. THERE WERE ALSO 2 RECALL ITEMS, ONE DEALING WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. ALL OF MY WORK HAS BEEN WITH LOCAL CHEVY SERVICE CENTERS, BUT NOT VERY HAPPY. AT AROUND 55,000 MILES, WE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION JUMPING OR SHIFTING ROUGHLY AT LOWER SPEEDS IN TOWN, BUT IT WAS INTERMITTENT. THE SERVICE CENTER SAID WE WOULD NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION AT A TREMENDOUS COST AT THAT TIME. MY QUESTIONS AT THE TIME ABOUT WHAT WAS THE CAUSE AND WHY AT SUCH A LOW MILEAGE WERE NEVER ANSWERED FULLY, AND I CHOSE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VAN. THE RECENT PROBLEM HAPPENED AT 79,000 WHILE CROSSING AN INTERSECTION, WHICH MY WIFE WAS LUCKY. THERE HAD BEEN A BIG BANG, AND THE RESULT INITIALLY WAS A LOST REVERSE GEAR. I HAD IT TAKEN TO A REPUTABLE LOCAL TRANSMISSION SHOP AND WHEN I WENT TO TALK TO THE MECHANIC, FOUND OUT THE PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WAS WELL KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE INDUSTRY. AS A MATTER OF FACT HE HAD 5 GM VEHICLES AT HIS SHOP FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WITH BASICALLY THE SAME MILEAGE ON EACH. NOW WHEN I STARTED TO RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I FIND MANY PEOPLE IN THE SAME SITUATION I AM, AND IT SEEMS THEY HAVE NO WAY TO GO, BECAUSE GM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THERE IS A PROBLEM, OF WHICH I BELIEVE THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT ALL ALONG. THERE ARE VERY FEW AVENUES TO HANDLE THIS KIND OF SITUATION AND I HAVE FOUND WORKING WITH THE LOCAL DEALERS AND EVEN THE CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICES TO BE A VERITABLE NIGHTMARE AND NO GUARANTEE OF HELP. I JUST WANT TO BE HEARD ALONG WITH THE OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME SITUATIONS OCCUR WITH THEIR VEHICLES. I ALSO FEEL LIKE THIS PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD ALSO BE COVERED UNDER SOME TYPE OF RECALL OR WARRANTY TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT OR REPAIR. *JB
