Bmw X2 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X2 is a line of subcompact luxury crossover SUVs produced by BMW since 2017. It was first showcased as the BMW Concept X2 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, with a production version unveiled in October 2017. Sales commenced in March 2018. It is considered a sportier and less practical alternative to the X1, as is the case with other even-numbered X models with its respective counterparts, and is now in its second incarnation since 2023.

First generation (F39; 2017)

The X2 (model code F39) is based on the same front-wheel drive UKL2 architecture as the X1 and MINI Countryman, and features the same 2,670 mm (105.1 in) wheelbase length. The X2 is assembled in Regensburg, Germany and is produced alongside the X1. Being a part of BMW X family, the vehicle is also available with xDrive all-wheel drive on higher end models.

Both the sDrive28i and xDrive28i models are available in North American markets.

A plug-in hybrid variant, called the xDrive 25e, was unveiled in January 2020. In September 2020 BMW presented the special variant M Mesh Edition with a sporty look.

Production concluded on 11 October 2022, about 13 months prior to the launch of the next generation.

Common Bmw X2 problems

The BMW X2, a luxury crossover SUV, has been the subject of various complaints from owners. Here are some common problems reported based on the search results:

  • Infotainment System Audio Issues: Some X2 owners have reported issues with the audio capabilities of their vehicles' infotainment systems. The audio can go out due to faulty wiring or a software glitch. If you experience this problem, it may be best to have the system checked for defects.
  • Suspension Noise: Noise from the X2's suspension can be a common issue, even on smooth roads. This noise can become particularly noticeable when driving on uneven ground. If you hear strange sounds coming from your X2's suspension, consider having it inspected for potential issues.
  • Transmission Problems: Strange smells from the transmission, along with shaking and vibrating, can indicate a malfunctioning transmission. If left unaddressed, transmission problems can severely impact the vehicle's performance and safety. Regular servicing and maintenance can help prevent these issues.
  • Recall Campaigns: BMW has issued several recall campaigns for the X2 to address safety problems. These include issues with a crankshaft sensor with a software fault, steering gear tie rod assembly, battery production, seat and seatbelt screws, and the micro gas generator within the front seatbelt's retractor.

In summary, the BMW X2 has faced various issues, including faulty coolant systems, infotainment system audio problems, suspension noise, transmission issues, and safety recalls. Regular servicing and maintenance can help prevent some of these problems. If you experience any of these issues, it's essential to have your X2 inspected and repaired by a professional.

  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: WBXYJ3C38JE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My car started fire by itself. It was parked in front of my house. I drove 90 miles from my work in the same evening. I came home at 7:00pm, and since then my car was untouched. At 1:30am of the night, I heard something "pop" outside and it started making noise like something is on fire. And then I opened the window to find out my car is on fire. It was parked right in front of my house, the fire would move to my house anytime, but my neighbor called the police and fire station for me, and told me to get out of the house ASAP because it might explode. I was so panicked to grab my cats as I try to leave my house, and the police came right away, they started to water the rim of my house. The fire truck arrived in 15min or so, and it took about 30min to put the fire off. Thankfully, as it was right after that we noticed the fire, and the gas tank was almost empty, neither my house, myself, my family, my cats, and my neighbor were unharmed. Hawaii Police Department was there : Report #24-021263. My insurance company (GEICO) came and take a look, and they are taking care of it now. It is confirmed as "total loss". It has been showing the alert to check engine oil for about a week or so, but on the "vehicle status" screen, it was saying nothing was in immediate trouble. I even had made an oil-change appointment at the dealer on Mar 18th. I will upload some photos, but I have some videos of when the fire started also.

  • Summary: My battery died. After a AAA jump, the car started fine but the right-rear-taillight-signal malfunctioned. It was working fine prior to the battery dying. I purchased a new battery and the mechanic said my right-rear-taillight was getting an electrical signal and the bulb work, but I needed a completely new taillight component ($300!) because it still was not working. While researching parts, I came across a YouTube 'fix' that showed that within the lightbulb compartment, there was a little piece of plastic that was MELTED preventing a mental piece on the lightbulb casing from touching the metal on the compartment preventing the light from coming on. My mechanic sanded down the melted plastic so the two metal parts could touch, and low and behold, the right-rear-taillight-signal worked just fine. Now I don't know if a battery failure could cause an electrical shock to this little piece of plastic but in the comments on this Youtube "fix", this same scenario happed to someone else with an X2 and their battery died and the right-rear-taillight-signal immediately failed. Is there a connection? What caused that little piece to melt??

  • VIN: WBXYJ5C3XJE
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I have had trouble with both my right and left taillight blinkers failing at various times. In the first instance, I took the car into BMW of Seattle to get a new bulb, but this did not fix the problem. After talking with the parts department, the man informed me that it might be an issue with the bulb socket. We tried replacing this but it still didn't work. The technician ended up scraping corrosion off of the contacts in the taillight assembly, which makes it work for a time, but then work either intermittently or not at all. I was told that the problem is due to metal connecting to plastic parts, which can become corroded and cause the electrical connection to fail. The parts person said that he had heard of this problem with the X2 models. BMW quoted me $1000 to replace each of the taillight units. I'm assuming if I spend $2000 to do both, this will just happen again. Please add this component to a recall list. Note: Both times the taillight warnings went off for each side, it was when the temperature had dropped in Seattle. They were cold days with a lot of moisture in the air. Possibly this problem is due to condensation leading to corrosion of the parts.

PARKING ASSIST FUNCTION BACKED INTO A CAR THE FIRST TIME I TRIED IT, DAMAGING THE BUMPER. MOREOVER, IT IS A FLAW IN THE SYSTEM IF IT REQUIRES YOU TO BRAKE BUT WILL OPERATE WITHOUT USING THE BRAKES. IMPOSSIBLE TO READ SCREEN AND BACK UP AT SAME TIME. SYSTEM SERVICED, THE DEALERSHIP WAS CONFUSED ABOUT HOW IT FUNCTIONED ON DIFFERENT MODELS - THE "BMW GENIUS" AT THE DEALERSHIP THOUGHT IT SHOULD BRAKE FOR YOU, THE MECHANICS DID NOT. HE SAID HE THOUGH THE SYSTEM WAS MISALIGNED, AND IN HIS WORDS "WOULD NOT BE COMFORTABLE USING IT." THIS SYSTEM IS GOING TO INJURE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE CONFUSING AND INCONSISTENT. CLEARLY THE SALESMAN, "GENIUSES," AND SERVICE PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MODELS. THE MANUAL OMITS ANY REFERENCE TO USING THE BRAKES DURING THE PROCESS WHICH IS COMPLETELY INCONSISTENT WITH OTHER MODELS AND THE BMW VIDEO ON HOW TO OPERATE THE SYSTEM.

  1. Benedict Stiedemann 2025-04-19

    Vehicle year: 2019

In just 24 months and with a mere 18,000 miles, my X2 requires new brakes (front and back, rotors and pads), an alignment, and new run-flats, amounting to a couple of grand. As an experienced driver of 40 years, I have never encountered a car that required brakes or four new expensive tires at such a low mileage. This is an unacceptable situation that needs to be addressed immediately.

  2. Alexzander Barrows 2025-04-05

That's a nice looking car! It's pleasant to drive, although there is some annoying cabin noise. One thing to be aware of is that when the turbo is needed, the car can hesitate at first, which could be dangerous. Unfortunately, the trunk is quite small and there's no place for a spare. Additionally, the trunk is cheaply finished. It's worth noting that the console only shows the speedometer in miles, not in km. Finally, the electronics can be a bit tricky to master, but once you do, it's smooth sailing!

  3. Colin Dach 2025-04-04

    Vehicle year: 2018

I bought the 2018 BMW X2 Xdrive for a few reasons. Firstly, I needed to have a better trade-in/resale value of the 340i I owned as it was getting up in miles. Secondly, I would be traveling into hilly, snowy areas, where an AWD would suit my needs better. At the dealership, I test drove the X3, X3 M340i and the X2 x drive. I really liked the crossover look of the X2. However, during the test drive, I noticed a slightly rough idling of the car at a stop and was not pleased with the hesitation and slightly mushy breaking. I expressed my concerns to the salesman, but he explained that it was because I was driving a car with less performance. Despite my reservations, I bought the car anyway. Unfortunately, I was wrong. During the car's first checkup, I was given a loaner X2, and it was a totally different ride! The car dealership looked into my X drive X2 and stated that all of the diagnostics were fine. They also confirmed that the loaner was not an AWD. I was surprised to learn that BMW cannot account for the variations necessary in an AWD vs FWD, and correct for good breaking, no hesitation, and this intermittent rough idle. I would not recommend buying this car as the hesitation alone is dangerous, and I have experienced more than one precarious situation due to this car's hesitation factor. That is why I rated one star for reliability. I hope BMW reads this and takes action to improve the car's performance.

I'm so happy that I leased a BMW X2! It looks amazing from the outside and the driving experience is fantastic. Although I didn't opt for navigation or driving aids, I was still impressed with the overall performance. It's a good thing my partner drives it regularly as I'm 6 foot with a fit body and find it a bit cramped inside. For example, the cup holder is quite small and can't fit a medium-sized cup from Dunkin' Donuts. Additionally, it's a bit inconvenient to reach for my coffee around the stick shift when I'm tired. Another downside is that there's no designated spot for my sunglasses near the rearview mirror. When I connect my iPhone, the Glimpse Map keeps popping up, which can be a bit annoying. Lastly, I can't seem to skip music tracks from the steering wheel, so I have to reach near the A/V display to change the song. Overall, it's a good-looking small SUV, but it's not my first choice. I can't wait for the lease to be over!

Get behind the wheel and you'll notice the difference with the X2. It offers a driving experience that's engaging and unique among SUVs in its class. We absolutely love ours and don't mind the slightly reduced cargo space. As empty nesters, this model fits our daily lifestyle with ease. It's also been completely reliable, incredibly comfortable, and impressively fuel-efficient.

I recently purchased my X2 M-Sport Edition in the gorgeous eye-catching M-Blue. I wasn't planning on buying a car for myself when I stopped at my local BMW dealership. I was actually car shopping for my son. While waiting in the showroom, I saw the X2 and couldn't resist taking a closer look. As a car enthusiast, I knew I was in trouble as soon as I sat inside. The interior is perfectly laid out, making it easy to keep your eyes on the road while still handling everything else. I loved everything from the two-toned interior to the bright blue exterior. It comfortably seats my family, despite our varying heights. I decided to take a test drive in the fully appointed one with the M-Sport Package and it was a thrill to drive. I'm not a fan of a 'smooth floating car' and this one did not disappoint me. It drove just like I suspected... I could feel the road like a gentle massage... a true BMW. After my son was done, I left the dealership but couldn't stop thinking about the X2 and how it could make my life easier. I went back two more times to price out various options and even took a test drive with my husband. He knew from the layout of the controls to the height adjustable tailgate that I had found the perfect car for my needs. After several rounds of negotiations, we finally saw them take the Blue M-Sport X2 off the showroom floor. Our salesperson worked hard to score me the best deal and we were thrilled with the outcome. This was the third car she has sold us and we couldn't be happier.I must say, this car has exceeded my expectations. It is absolutely stunning, and every detail, from the design to the way it handles on the road, is a delight for any BMW enthusiast. I have received countless compliments on my car, and every time I drive it, I can't help but smile. I am so grateful that this car has come into my life, as it has truly made a huge difference. Not only is it a pleasure to drive, but it has also made my life much easier. Even my service dog loves it! I would also like to mention that BMW offers a Mobility Program that can help cover the cost of modifying the car to suit the needs of disabled individuals (up to $2500). They are willing to make any necessary changes to further accommodate my needs. I feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled upon the X2, and I am grateful every day for the journey that led me to BMW!

I had never driven a BMW before, but last year I needed a car quickly and walked into a BMW dealership. I leased the vehicle without even test driving it once. The first time I drove an X2 was when I got my lease and took it home. Why? It may sound crazy, but the introductory movie about the X2 was shot on an island in my home country, a place that is very well known to me, and I was hooked. I have no regrets about my decision, though I will likely never do anything as impulsive as that again. I trusted my instincts and they were correct, at least this time. I got the cheapest AWD model with minimal extras, and it drives wonderfully. I love it. From the Sports mode when I need it, to the Eco Pro mode that I am in most of the time, it is a pleasure to drive. I drove 6 hours without stopping once and got out of it without feeling stiff. I have only driven it in very significant snow once, and it did quite well, almost as good as my prior Audi quattro A4 (but quattro is unbeatable, in my humble opinion). The fuel mileage is great. I mostly commute in NYC between the Bronx and Brooklyn, and I get 25-27 MPG, depending on how dense the traffic is. I get easily 32 MPG on pure highway driving. It is a very enjoyable driving experience, and it is a pleasure to just sit in it and move. I remember the Ultimate Driving Machine ads, and I have to say, this is exactly it, in my opinion. I got 4K off the price for a 3-year lease, which really reduced the total payments by a lot. However, it is a very costly experience to repair anything. This may not be just this vehicle or only BMW, but it does feel a bit more expensive at BMW than, for example, Audi. For instance, just recently, something hit my windshield and caused a large crack that needs windshield replacement. The same thing happened twice on my Audi, and the replacements were no more than what Safelite demands for this BMW, about 600-700. However, the BMW dealership gave me an estimate of 1800-2400 when a school bus took down my side mirror, which was quite expensive. An Uber scratched my headlight and it will cost over 2000 to replace it. However, I am hoping to get the scratched glass replaced with an OEM part ordered from Europe for a fraction of that price. Luckily, my vehicle is still under warranty and I haven't had any mechanical problems yet. If the car ever has problems after the warranty expires, repairs could be expensive. Sometimes the shifting feels uneven, but it may be nothing. I had a Land Rover Freelander transmission that reminded me of this feeling many years ago, which completely failed some 20K miles later and was a fortune to replace. I have found 2018 X2s with 12K miles on them (same as my vehicle) that cost 27K after one year of use, while my vehicle at the end of the 3 year lease will have about 30-40K miles on it and is priced in the lease agreement at 24K. So, it would make very little sense to buy it at that price, since it seems to lose so much in value after only a year and 12K miles. Overall, I am very happy with the vehicle and the lease price. I think I got a very good deal.

As a car enthusiast, I was immediately drawn to the perfectly laid out interior and the stunning two-toned design. The bright blue exterior was also a major selling point for me. Despite my family's height range (6'-6'4I must say, this car has exceeded my expectations.
