The fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E46, which was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1997 to 2006, and was the successor to the E36 3 Series which ceased production in 2000. First introduced in November 1997, the E46 was available in sedan, coupé, convertible, station wagon and hatchback body styles. The latter has been marketed as the 3 Series Compact.

The M3 performance model was introduced in June 2000 with a 2-door coupé body style, followed by the convertible counterpart in April 2001. The M3 is powered by the BMW S54 straight-six engine with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed SMG-II automated manual transmission.

The E46 line-up was phased out starting from late 2004, following the introduction of the E90 3 Series sedans. However, the E46 coupé and convertible body styles remained in production until August 2006.

Common 2002 Bmw E46 problems

The BMW E46, produced from 1997 to 2006, is known for its reliable inline 6-cylinder engines, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. One of the most prevalent issues is the weak rear shock mounts, which can result in abnormal noises, uneven tire wear, excessive vibration, and increased wear of shock absorbers. To address this concern, BMW offers a rear shock mount reinforcement part that can be installed to prevent further damage.

Another significant problem affecting all E46 models, especially those exposed to snow, salt, and moisture, is the rear subframe mounts. These mounting points can crack or tear, causing the car to shift while in motion, making it unpredictable and unsafe. This issue is crucial to address when buying an E46 or an E46 M3, as repairs are not easy or inexpensive.

The M54 and M52 6-cylinder engines in the E46 are prone to PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) failure and clogging. A clogged crankcase vent valve can lead to leaky, oil-weeping seals on the timing cover, oil pan, and the PCV valve cover. This problem is caused by unreleased pressure and can result in severe engine issues. Therefore, it is essential to check for all and any oil leaks on the 6-cylinder inline petrol engines.

The double Vanos engines (320i, 325i, 330i) are known for their Vanos issues, which can make an E46 a nightmare to own and maintain.

The E46 also has cooling system failure and leaks from plastic components, as the cooling system is full of plastic fittings, clips, and reservoirs that can crack and cause coolant leaks and depressurization.

Additionally, the front lower control arm bushings can wear out, causing a clunking or knocking noise from the front suspension, especially when turning or going over bumps

Lastly, the window regulators can fail, causing the windows to stop working or fall into the door

When buying a used BMW E46, it is crucial to be aware of these common problems and check for them before making a purchase. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the E46.
