The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972, succeeding the New Class Sedans, and currently in its eight generation.

The 5 Series was initially available as a sedan, with a wagon/estate body style (marketed as "Touring") added in 1991 and a 5-door fastback configuration (marketed as "Gran Turismo") available from 2009 to 2017. Each successive generation carries a distinct internal E- designation.

The first generation of 5 Series was powered by naturally aspirated four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines. Following generations have been powered by four-cylinder, six-cylinder, V8 and V10 engines that are either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Since 1982, diesel engines have been included in the 5 Series range.

The 5 Series is BMW's second-best-selling model after the 3 Series. On 29 January 2008, the 5 millionth 5 Series was manufactured, a 530d sedan in Carbon Black Metallic.

BMW's three-digit model naming convention began with the first 5 Series, thus the 5 Series was BMW's first model line to use "Series" in the name.

Since the E28, all generations of 5 Series have included an "M" model, called the BMW M5.

Summary: This vehicle has been re[aired for cooling system problems multiple time by BMW dealer. Now that the vehicle is approximately 90 days outside of warranty a cooling system leak has arisen with the engine oil cooling interface. On-line there is mention of this issue with the B46 Engine which is in this vehicle developing coolant leaks. The repairs are very expensive for this apparently well know issue.

DRIPPING APPEARS TO STOP AFTER CAR WARMS UP, SO MULTIPLE FAILED ATTEMPTS TO DIAGNOSE ISSUE. HOWEVER, NOW CAN SEE THAT ALL INJECTORS LEAK AND SPRAY FUEL FROM THE HOUSING...APPEARS TO BE WHERE THE PLASTIC AND METAL MEETS. CAR RUNS FINE THROUGHOUT THIS TIME. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET, IT APPEARS THAT THE FUEL INJECTORS ARE KNOWN TO BE FAULTY AND THE PROBLEM WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CORRECTED AT SOME POINT. THERE IS ENOUGH FUEL POURING OUT TO QUICKLY IGNITE AND BURN UP THE CAR, GARAGE, AND HOME IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. SHOP QUOTED WELL OVER $2K TO REPLACE THE INJECTORS, AND WAS UNCERTAIN IF IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. ASKED ME TO TOW THE CAR FROM THEIR LOT, FOR FEAR IT WOULD IGNITE. CLEARLY A DANGEROUS ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN AND IT I AM SHOCKED TO SEE THERE IS INFO ONLINE AND AT NHTSA, BUT NO SAFETY RECALL.

IT WAS A CLEAR DAY, THE SENSORS WERE UNOBSTRUCTED, AND THE ROAD HAD NOTHING ABOUT IT THAT SHOULD BE A PROBLEM FOR THE SYSTEMS. THE ACCIDENT WAS ABLE TO BE AVOIDED, BUT A CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEM ONLY INDICATED A FAULT RIGHT WHEN IT WAS NEEDED. THE DEALERSHIP WERE UNABLE TO FIND A FAULT AND BLAMED IT ON LIGHT BLINDING THE CAMERA.

Summary: I HAD AN ACCIDENT IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD ON MAY 8, 2019. ACCORDING TO BMW'S ACTIVATION SYSTEM THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT 6:58 PM. I TALKED WITH THE BMW CRASH ANALYST TEAM AND I WAS GOING 17.5 MPH WHEN I RAN THROUGH TWO SETS OF SCRUBS, HIT A GARAGE DOOR AND ENDED PARALLEL TO THE DOOR. ACCORDING TO BMW THE SEAT BELT ACTIVATED AT TIME OF IMPACT WITH THE FIRST SET OF SCRUBS AND WITHIN A MILLISECOND THE AIR-BAG DEPLOYED. I RECEIVED A BROKEN BACK IN THIS MINOR ACCIDENT. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THE AIR-BAG IS TO PROVIDE SAFETY TO THE DRIVERS UPPER TORSO AND HEAD. MY UPPER TORSO AND HEAD RECEIVED NO INJURY FROM THE ACCIDENT OR THE AIR-BAG. MY ASSUMPTION IS THE AIR-BAG HIT MY LOWER WAIST AREA RESULTING IN THE L-1 FRACTURE. TWO TITANIUM RODS WERE ALSO INSERTED TO STABILIZE THE L-2,3,4,5,11. WHEN DISCUSSING THIS 'POTENTIAL' FAULT WITH BMW N.A. IT WAS INDICATED THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA HOW THE AIR-BAG WILL DEPLOY AND THEY ARE GLAD THAT I AM OK ASIDE FROM THE BROKEN BACK. IF BMW DOES NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE AIR-BAG WILL DEPLOY IS THIS NOT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN TESTING FOR THE DEPLOYMENT. IF IT DEPLOYED AS UNDERSTOOD TO THE UPPER TORSO AND HEAD, I WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE HAD A BROKEN NOSE THAN A BROKEN BACK!

Summary: ACTIVE LANE KEEPING ASSISTANT IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE OFTEN WILL VEER OUT OF LANE TOWARD ONCOMING TRAFFIC OR OTHER OBSTACLE. THIS OCCURS EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE CLEAR LANE MARKINGS AND ALL OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR SYSTEM OPERATION ARE MET. IT HAPPENS AT HIGHER SPEEDS AND AT LOWER SPEEDS AS WELL. SINCE THE FEATURE DOES OPERATE CORRECTLY A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THE TIME, THE DRIVER IS PUT UNDER EXTRA STRESS HAVING TO BE CONSTANTLY ON GUARD FOR WHEN THE CAR WILL VEER OFF WITHOUT WARNING. BMW LITERATURE AND VIDEO SAY THE SYSTEM WILL MAKE THE DRIVE MORE RELAXED AND THE DRIVER MORE RESTED BUT IT IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THAT THE DRIVER IS ALWAYS ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE, THEIR VIDEO STATES THAT THE SYSTEM KEEPS THE CAR IN THE CENTER OF THE LANE WITHOUT DRIVER STEERING INPUT. I HAVE CONTACTED BMW AND MY LOCAL DEALER. ALL THEY SAY IS THAT THE SYSTEM OPERATES AS DESIGNED. BUT IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND WILL CAUSE INJURY OR WORSE. ADDITIONALLY, "WITH THE SYSTEM SWITCHED ON, THE PERSON WARNING WITH CITY BRAKING FUNCTION AND THE SIDE COLLISION WARNING ARE ACTIVE." THEREFORE, IF YOU TURN THE SYSTEM OFF BECAUSE OF THE DANGER OF VEERING OUT OF LANE, YOU WILL LOSE THE SAFETY FEATURES JUST MENTIONED. I AM VERY SURPRISED AND DISTURBED BY BMW'S FAILURE TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND ADDRESS THE FAILURES AND DANGERS OF THE SYSTEM. BEING MOST INTERESTED IN SAFETY OF MY VEHICLE I ALWAYS PURCHASE ALL THE SAFETY FEATURES. IN THIS SITUATION I HAVE BEEN SADLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE RELIABILITY OF THE BMW TECHNOLOGY.

Summary: FUEL INJECTORS LEAK IN EXTREME COLD TEMPERATURES. EXACT TEMPERATURE UNKNOWN BUT HAS BEEN -5F FOR THE PAST 3 DAYS AND THE CABIN FILLS WITH THE SMELL OF GAS WITHIN MOMENTS AND UPON OPENING THE HOOD YOU CAN SEE A MIST OF FUEL FROM THE INJECTOR. TRIED IT LAST NIGHT AT 8F AND NO NOTICEABLE LEAK, ALTHOUGH STILL FAINT SMELL. RESEARCHED ONLINE ONLY TO DISCOVER THIS APPEARS TO BE A CONSISTENT PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN VERY COLD AREAS AS MYSELF. I PURCHASED IT USED FROM A MUCH MILDER CLIMATE. VERY THANKFUL IT DIDN'T CATCH ON FIRE WITH MY KIDS IN IT. CAR WILL REMAIN PARKED UNTIL FIXED. I REALLY HOPE THIS GET LOOKED INTO. AS AN INSURANCE AGENT THIS IS VERY CONCERNING TO ME, BOTH ON A PERSONAL LEVEL AND AS A PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY. I AM NOT VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT CARS AND WHEN I SMELLED IT I THOUGHT IT WAS AN EXHAUSTIVE LEAK OR MY FUEL RUNNING TOO RICH BECAUSE OF THE COLD, AT FIRST. BUT AFTER GETTING A HEADACHE DRIVING TO WORK I DECIDED IT WAS MORE. INVESTIGATED TRYING TO FIGURE WHERE IT CAME FROM AND ONCE I DISCOVERED THE SMELL WAS MORE INTENSE UNDER THE HOOD I GOT WORRIED. MY HUSBAND INVESTIGATED WHEN I GOT HOME FROM WORK AND THOUGHT I WAS OVERREACTING SINCE HE ONLY SMELLED A FAINT SMELL AND LOOKED EVERYTHING OVER AND SAW NOTHING. THIS MORNING THOUGH, BEING COLD AND HIM RUNNING LATE FOR WORK, MY CAR WAS RUNNING WHEN HE WENT TO LEAVE.HE COULD SMELL IT AS HE WALKED BY. HE OPENED IT UP AND COULD SEE THE MIST OF FUEL. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MY 3 KIDS TO SCHOOL THE LAST TWO DAYS WITH FUEL SPRAYING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DEADLY SITUATION, BUT BECAUSE IT ONLY OCCURS IN EXTREME COLD IT IS EASILY OVERLOOKED AND MISDIAGANOSISED. ESPECIALLY AS THE VEHICLES ARE GETTING OLDER, THE DRIVERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO OVERLOOK ISSUES THINKING THEY LEAKING IN THE EXHAUST OR TANK ETC DUE TO DETERIORATION, AS I DID AT FIRST. *TR

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022 330i, 530i, X3 xDrive30i, and X4 xDrive30i vehicles. The mechatronics unit inside the transmission may not have been assembled properly, which could result in an internal leak.
Consequence: An internal transmission leak can result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the transmission mechatronics unit, free of charge. All of the vehicle population for this recall have been repaired. Owner notification letters were not mailed. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021 2 Series (230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, M240i xDrive), 330e, 330e Xdrive, 4 Series Coupe (430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive) M4 Coupe, M4 Competition Coupe, BMW 4 Series Convertible (430i, M440i), BMW X1 sDrive28i, xDrive28i, 2 Series Gran Coupe (228i, 228i xDrive, M235i xDrive), M2 Competition Coupe, 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, M340i xDrive, M3, M3 Competition, 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper, CooperS, JCW), X2 sDrive28i, X2 xDrive28i, X2 M35i, Z4 sDrive30i, Z4 M40i, MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper SE), MINI Convertible (Cooper, Cooper S, JCW), MINI Clubman (Cooper S, Cooper S All4, JCW), MINI Countryman (Cooper, Cooper All4, Cooper S, Cooper S All4, JCW All4), Rolls Royce Ghost, MINI Countryman (Cooper S E All4), Rolls Royce Phantom, Rolls Royce Cullinan, and Toyota Supra vehicles. The passenger seat belt Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) may deactivate early, before the webbing fully retracts. As such, these assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Consequence: During a crash, a seat belt retractor that does not function as intended increases the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and, if necessary, replace the retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. When shifting into Reverse, a small portion of the rearview image may be obscured, or the screen may not illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: If the driver relies on only the rearview camera image, the missing or reduced rearview image view can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rearview camera software and update it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 16, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive and 2021 740Li xDrive vehicles. The output shafts (left/right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels may break due to a heat treatment error during supplier production.
Consequence: A broken output shaft can lead to a loss of drive power or a rollaway condition in a parked vehicle (if the parking brake is not engaged), increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the output shaft(s), free of charge. The recall began March 24, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
