The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972, succeeding the New Class Sedans, and currently in its eight generation.

The 5 Series was initially available as a sedan, with a wagon/estate body style (marketed as "Touring") added in 1991 and a 5-door fastback configuration (marketed as "Gran Turismo") available from 2009 to 2017. Each successive generation carries a distinct internal E- designation.

The first generation of 5 Series was powered by naturally aspirated four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines. Following generations have been powered by four-cylinder, six-cylinder, V8 and V10 engines that are either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Since 1982, diesel engines have been included in the 5 Series range.

The 5 Series is BMW's second-best-selling model after the 3 Series. On 29 January 2008, the 5 millionth 5 Series was manufactured, a 530d sedan in Carbon Black Metallic.

BMW's three-digit model naming convention began with the first 5 Series, thus the 5 Series was BMW's first model line to use "Series" in the name.

Since the E28, all generations of 5 Series have included an "M" model, called the BMW M5.

IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THE AIR-BAG IS TO PROVIDE SAFETY TO THE DRIVERS UPPER TORSO AND HEAD. MY UPPER TORSO AND HEAD RECEIVED NO INJURY FROM THE ACCIDENT OR THE AIR-BAG. MY ASSUMPTION IS THE AIR-BAG HIT MY LOWER WAIST AREA RESULTING IN THE L-1 FRACTURE. TWO TITANIUM RODS WERE ALSO INSERTED TO STABILIZE THE L-2,3,4,5,11. WHEN DISCUSSING THIS 'POTENTIAL' FAULT WITH BMW N.A. IT WAS INDICATED THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA HOW THE AIR-BAG WILL DEPLOY AND THEY ARE GLAD THAT I AM OK ASIDE FROM THE BROKEN BACK. IF BMW DOES NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE AIR-BAG WILL DEPLOY IS THIS NOT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN TESTING FOR THE DEPLOYMENT. SINCE THE FEATURE DOES OPERATE CORRECTLY A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THE TIME, THE DRIVER IS PUT UNDER EXTRA STRESS HAVING TO BE CONSTANTLY ON GUARD FOR WHEN THE CAR WILL VEER OFF WITHOUT WARNING. BMW LITERATURE AND VIDEO SAY THE SYSTEM WILL MAKE THE DRIVE MORE RELAXED AND THE DRIVER MORE RESTED BUT IT IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THAT THE DRIVER IS ALWAYS ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE, THEIR VIDEO STATES THAT THE SYSTEM KEEPS THE CAR IN THE CENTER OF THE LANE WITHOUT DRIVER STEERING INPUT. I HAVE CONTACTED BMW AND MY LOCAL DEALER. ALL THEY SAY IS THAT THE SYSTEM OPERATES AS DESIGNED. BUT IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND WILL CAUSE INJURY OR WORSE. ADDITIONALLY, "WITH THE SYSTEM SWITCHED ON, THE PERSON WARNING WITH CITY BRAKING FUNCTION AND THE SIDE COLLISION WARNING ARE ACTIVE." THEREFORE, IF YOU TURN THE SYSTEM OFF BECAUSE OF THE DANGER OF VEERING OUT OF LANE, YOU WILL LOSE THE SAFETY FEATURES JUST MENTIONED. I AM VERY SURPRISED AND DISTURBED BY BMW'S FAILURE TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND ADDRESS THE FAILURES AND DANGERS OF THE SYSTEM. THIS MORNING THOUGH, BEING COLD AND HIM RUNNING LATE FOR WORK, MY CAR WAS RUNNING WHEN HE WENT TO LEAVE.HE COULD SMELL IT AS HE WALKED BY. HE OPENED IT UP AND COULD SEE THE MIST OF FUEL. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MY 3 KIDS TO SCHOOL THE LAST TWO DAYS WITH FUEL SPRAYING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DEADLY SITUATION, BUT BECAUSE IT ONLY OCCURS IN EXTREME COLD IT IS EASILY OVERLOOKED AND MISDIAGANOSISED. ESPECIALLY AS THE VEHICLES ARE GETTING OLDER, THE DRIVERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO OVERLOOK ISSUES THINKING THEY LEAKING IN THE EXHAUST OR TANK ETC DUE TO DETERIORATION, AS I DID AT FIRST. *TR

  • Consequence: An internal transmission leak can result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the transmission mechatronics unit, free of charge. All of the vehicle population for this recall have been repaired. Owner notification letters were not mailed. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The passenger seat belt Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) may deactivate early, before the webbing fully retracts. As such, these assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
  • Consequence: During a crash, a seat belt retractor that does not function as intended increases the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and, if necessary, replace the retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021.   • Consequence: If the driver relies on only the rearview camera image, the missing or reduced rearview image view can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rearview camera software and update it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 16, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

  • Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive and 2021 740Li xDrive vehicles. The output shafts (left/right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels may break due to a heat treatment error during supplier production.
  • Consequence: A broken output shaft can lead to a loss of drive power or a rollaway condition in a parked vehicle (if the parking brake is not engaged), increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the output shaft(s), free of charge. The recall began March 24, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
