Toyota Rav4 ev problems
The Toyota RAV4 EV is an all-electric version of the popular RAV4 SUV produced by Toyota until 2014. Two generations of the EV model were sold in California, and to fleets elsewhere in the US, with a gap of almost ten years between them.
The first generation was leased from 1997 to 2003, and at the lessees' request, many units were sold after the vehicle was discontinued. A total of 1,484 were leased and/or sold in California to meet the state's mandate for zero-emissions vehicle. A small number were sold or leased in fleet sales in other states. As of mid-2012, there were almost 500 vehicles still in use in California. Production of the second generation EV was limited to 2,600 units during a three-year run, with sales limited to California beginning in 2012. Production ended in September 2014. A total of 2,489 units of the second generation model were sold in California through April 2015.
Toyota worked together with Tesla Motors and Panasonic to develop the second generation RAV4 EV, and the electric SUV was released in the United States in September 2012. The US Environmental Protection Agency rated the second generation RAV4 EV with a range of 103 mi (166 km) and a combined fuel economy rating of 76 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (3.1 L/100 km).

Common Toyota Rav4 ev problems
The Toyota RAV4 EV is an electric SUV produced by Toyota in collaboration with Tesla. While it offers a silent drive and zero gas stops, there are several common problems that owners have reported.
- Gateway/Communications ECU: This component can disable the vehicle, often indicated by a Check EV light. This can leave the driver stranded and unable to use the vehicle until the issue is resolved.
- Motor/Gear Box Noise: This problem requires motor replacement, as the noise is caused by a fault within the motor or gearbox. This can be an expensive repair, and may also indicate a larger issue with the drivetrain.
- Heater Failure: This issue can take out the DC to DC converter, which is responsible for converting high voltage DC power from the battery to low voltage DC power for the vehicle's accessories. This can leave the driver without heat, and may also affect other electrical systems in the vehicle.
- DC to DC Converter Failure: This component is responsible for converting high voltage DC power from the battery to low voltage DC power for the vehicle's accessories. If it fails, the vehicle may not be able to operate certain electrical systems, such as the lights or radio.
- Onboard Charger Failure: This can prevent the vehicle from recharging, except for JdeMO equipped cars with CHAdeMO quick chargers. This can leave the driver unable to charge the vehicle, which may require a costly repair or replacement.
- Leaking Oil from Gearbox: This issue has been reported in both the RAV4 EV and the Mercedes B-Class ED, which shares the same Tesla Model S drivetrain. This can lead to a loss of power and potential damage to other components.
- Check EV System Message: This message can appear for various reasons, and often requires four ON/OFF cycles to clear. This can be frustrating for the driver, as it may indicate a larger issue with the vehicle's electrical systems.
- Charge Timer: This issue can affect the vehicle's charging capabilities, and may require a reset or repair to resolve.
- Entunes: This is the infotainment system used in the RAV4 EV, and can have various issues such as connectivity problems or software glitches.
- 12 Volt Battery: This battery provides power to the vehicle's accessories, and may need to be replaced if it fails or becomes weak.
- Charge Port Door Sticks: This issue can affect the vehicle's ability to charge, and may require a repair or replacement of the charge port door.
These issues can affect the reliability and usability of the RAV4 EV, and may require costly repairs or replacements. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems, and to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician before purchasing.
Why did Toyota discontinue the RAV4 EV?
If you didn't have a Level 2 charging station, it took at least 24 hours to get a full charge. That wasn't practical for daily drivers. That's the main reason why there wasn't enough interest in this electric SUV. It played a big part in Toyota's decision to discontinue production after the 2014 model year.
How long does a Toyota RAV4 electric battery last?
A common question among Toyota RAV4 owners is, “How long does a Toyota battery last?” The average lifespan of a Toyota RAV4 battery can vary depending on various factors, such as driving conditions, maintenance, and climate. The RAV4's issues include excessive oil consumption, steering wheel problems, lagging transmissions, fuel system problems, and electrical complications, among other troubles.
What are the disadvantages of a RAV4 hybrid?
Things We Don't Like
- Noisy Cabin. Excessive interior noise from different sources is an issue with the RAV4 Hybrid. ...

- Nothing Special Inside. ...
- Technical Difficulties.

- Summary: In reference to Toyota Motor North America - Customer Support Program ZKG. My Toyota vehicle has experienced paint peeling on the exterior metal body panels. I have applied to receive coverage from Toyota for the paint peeling as part of the ZKG Program. Toyota has denied my request for coverage and did not provide me with notice of the ZKG Program. The paint color of my vehicle is the original factory applied Blizzard Pearl (070) paint color. The vehicle experienced noticeable paint peeling around 9.5-10 years past the Date of First Use of the vehicle. I reported the paint peeling to my local Toyota dealer service center around two (2) weeks after the car was ten (10) years past the Date of First Use. Because the ZKG program coverage had expired by the time I had reported the paint peeling, the Toyota dealer service center referred me to the Toyota Brand Engagement Center. The Toyota Brand Engagement Center denied my request for coverage because the vehicle was reported shortly after the Duration of Coverage. I did not receive notice of the Customer Support Program ZKG from Toyota. I became the owner of this vehicle in the same year that the program notification was sent out. The paint peeling did not start until very close to time of coverage expiration for my vehicle. I was unaware that I would be required to report the paint peeling issue to Toyota by a certain date as I was never made aware of the Customer Support Program ZKG from Toyota.

- Summary: This car was purchased in March 2024 at Peak Motors in Hickory, NC and on [XXX] 2024, while driving the Check engine light, power steering, oil lamp, A&T temp oil, battery, tire and seatbelt light came on, the RPM went to 0 and we could no accelerate so we coasted down a hill and pull off to restart the car. After restarting it, all the lights disappeared and proceeded home and it happened 2 more times on the way home. The next day our mechanic and tested the battery and alternator, the alternator was good, but battery was weak so we got a new battery. A couple weeks later, the same thing happened and took it back in the mechanic but they could not get any codes nor could get it to reproduce what was happening so nothing could be done. They cleaned the mass air filter, but the same thing happened a few weeks later. The car has been in the shop for a total of 5 times and kept at the shop for 3 weeks. On [XXX] 2024, the car engine died again while in a drive thru and immediately took it to the mechanic 10 minutes away and they were able to get the code P1604 Startability Malfunction but the code is too generic they couldn't pinpoint specifically exactly what is the problem. Because of this being a HUGH safety issue, I contacted the dealer and they said they inspected it but could not provide proof when I asked for paperwork. I contacted Toyota in Asheville, NC where it serviced and they haven' returned my call. I contacted Mike Johnson Toyota in Hickory, NC where it was bought and they had no service records regarding this vehicle. It has passed inspection in Buncombe, NC but nobody can figure out what's going on. I am scared to drive the car because it happens at random times and it puts us at risk of being hit since we suddenly loss power but also puts others at risk as could hit us harming themselves and damaging their car. We drove the car for only a month before all of this began to happen and we just want to feel safe driving and riding in this car again. If a small-top battery is used for replacement and the hold-down clamp is not tightened correctly, the battery could move when the vehicle is driven with forceful turns. Safety Risk The movement could cause the positive battery terminal to contact the hold-down clamp and short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. Remedy Toyota is currently preparing the remedy. When the remedy is available, Toyota dealers will replace the battery hold down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover with improved ones FREE OF CHARGE. At this time, Toyota estimates the remedy will be available in the middle of 2024 but this is subject to change. Until the remedy is available, owners who have not had the free inspection performed under Consumer Advisory 21TG01 should be encouraged to do so.

I purchased my Toyota RAV4 EV from Toyota of Palo Alto in December 2014. Although it had a range of only about 100 miles, I found it to be a very peppy and fun car to drive. It is incredibly versatile and has tremendous torque! Most people don't realize that we don't drive more than about 50 miles in a typical day, so the range limitations of this car are immaterial. It's perfect for my daily errands around town and even handles longer trips to nearby Los Angeles with ease. With about 105,000 miles on the car, I estimate that I've saved around $12,000 on gasoline purchases thanks to my solar electricity at home. The car has been almost maintenance-free, with only the need for new tires every 40,000 miles and a replacement of the 12-volt battery once. Toyota even replaced the motor and transmission under warranty due to engine whine at around 45,000 miles. Overall, it's been one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. I can't bear to part with it because Toyota isn't making a decent all-electric replacement yet. I'll keep waiting to see if they can get their act together. I feel so lucky to own this gem of a car!

This EV is a fantastic car for commuting to work or a suburban lifestyle that combines overnight charging with an annual daily mileage average around 60 miles per day. With off-peak charging, you can save a significant amount of money with gasoline prices at California highs.

Vehicle year: 2013
This is a great car, with some seriously mediocre traits. The best thing about it is that it is Pure Electric, has incredible range, is quick and really fun to drive. In fact, it feels like the power train is outperforming the suspension, so be careful. The exterior styling of the car is great, and it's fairly comfortable. However, the console containing entertainment and climate controls is not so great. I'm not sure what happened here, but the hodgepodge approach set back the notion of intuitive interface to the ice age, they are truly awful. It feels like they took components that never quite worked in other cars and dumped them in here just to get them out of inventory. With that said, we have made it ours, and we love driving it, even with the disappointing controls.

I love this car! It's so well-equipped that there's really nothing more you could ask for. I even had leather seats installed because I adore the little luxuries.

If you're a golfer, you may have heard of a 'Poor Man's Pebble' in reference to Pebble Beach. Well, this is a 'Poor Man's Tesla'... by the way, this is a compliment. As other reviewers have mentioned, you're getting the Tesla motor without having to put down an additional $20k+. My previous cars include an Audi A4 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Although this car does not have 4WD, it matches or exceeds their speed and torque off the line, has as much storage as the Jeep, and provides a smoother ride than either. I am very pleased with it. I understand that the model is being phased out by the end of 2014 due to the meeting of CA EPA regulations, so get one while you can!
