Scion Iq problems
The Toyota iQ is a city car manufactured by Toyota and marketed in a single generation for Japan (2008–2016); Europe (2008–2015); and North America (2012–2015), where it was marketed as the Scion iQ. A rebadged variant was marketed in Europe as the Aston Martin Cygnet (2009–2013).
Designed at the Toyota European Design and Development studio in Nice, France, the iQ is noted for its specialized engineering to maximize passenger space and minimize length. The design accommodates four occupants, although one of the seats has very little legroom and is not suitable for adults.
Following a concept presented at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the production iQ debuted at the March 2008 Geneva Motor Show. Japanese sales began in November 2008 and European sales in January 2009. In 2008, the iQ was named the Japanese Car of the Year.
The name iQ, an initialism of the term intelligence quotient, recalls a competitor, the Smart Fortwo. The letters "iQ" also stand for "individuality", "innovation", "quality", a hint at its "cubic form" and also a "cue" for owners to embrace new types of vehicles and lifestyles.
The iQ reached the end of production in December 2015, and it was discontinued in Japan in April 2016.

Common Scion Iq problems
The Scion iQ, a small city car produced by Toyota, has faced several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most significant issues is the car's size, which has been criticized for its small dimensions and limited space for passengers and cargo.
Another issue is the car's reliability, which has been a subject of debate among consumers and consumer reporting publications. While U.S. News based its reliability score on the J.D. Power predicted reliability rating of three-out-of-five, some other rating agencies evaluated the iQ lower.
The 2012 and 2013 Scion iQs have also faced a recall regarding a system cable for the front passenger airbags, which is an important safety concern.
The car's body and paint have also been a source of complaints, with the 2012 Scion iQ having the most overall complaints, particularly for paint issues. The most-reported problem is 'paint is peeling off,' with an average cost to fix of $600 and an average mileage of 41,000 mi.
Lastly, the car's fuel efficiency has been a topic of discussion, with some owners reporting noticeable oil usage, requiring frequent top-ups.
In summary, the Scion iQ has faced several common problems, including size limitations, reliability concerns, safety recalls, body and paint issues, and fuel efficiency concerns. Despite these issues, some owners have expressed satisfaction with the car's compact design and fuel efficiency, making it a suitable choice for those looking for a small city car.
Is Scion iQ a good car?
Slow, noisy, and uncomfortable, the iQ's few positives include exceptionally easy parking, and its very good 34-mpg overall fuel economy. The extremely tiny rear seats won't make anyone riding in the second row happy, and the numb and overly quick steering makes the iQ less-than-enjoyable to drive.
What is high mileage for Scion iQ?
1.3-liter, double overhead cam, four-cylinder engine with dual VVT-i. MILEAGE: 36 mpg (city), 37 mpg (highway).
How long will Scion iQ last?
Typically, a Scion iQ with excellent care and maintenance will survive around 200,000 miles, with the high mileage point at 150,000 miles and the good mileage point at 125,000 miles. The better you care for the system and drive well, the longer your Scion iQ will be able to survive on the road.
Is the Toyota iQ a good car?
Wonderfully agile, decently refined, easy to park and cheap to run, the iQ has a lot going for it. We ran one on our long-term fleet and loved it, because it's such a multi-talented city car, but as a new buy it was held back by Toyota's ambitious pricing.

- Summary: have a 2013 Scion IQ (auto/cvt). I had the 'check engine' and 'trac control' lights come on a few years ago.. I was driving on city streets. All I noticed was that the car didn't respond as it should when I gave it gas. ( nothing drastic ) I ran the codes. It said the gas pedal was the problem. I removed the pedal assembly. (it's easier to unplug it that way. I unplugged it and looked at the inside of the plug. All looked fine. Plugged the pedal back in and all was good then. (I'm sure I avoided a $500 bill ) Same problem just occurred a few years later. I didn't bother running the codes. I just unplugged/re-plugged the pedal. Saved another $500. Here's a scary one. I was driving the car the first light snow of the year. On a city street, going slow on level road. Just maintaining speed..... not slowing ..... not speeding up...... not turning. All of a sudden

- Summary: ROUGH IDLE AND ENGINE SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING. VEHICLE IS AT TOYOTA DEALER AND DIAGNOSTIC HAS BEEN PERFORMED. DEALER HAS DETERMINED THE CAUSE TO BE INTERNAL CARBON DEPOSIT IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS. TOYOTA IS REFUSING TO COVER THE REPAIR IN THEIR WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM ZG8 BECAUSE MY VIN WASN'T PART OF THE ORIGINAL CREATION FOR THE PROGRAM ZG8. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ISSUE DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY ENGINE IS UNEXPECTEDLY SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 41063 MILES ON THE ENGINE AND UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME THE 5 YEARS OR 60,000 MILES NEW VEHILE LIMITED WARRANTY HAS PASSED THE 5 YEAR MARK. THE TOYOTA MECHANICS WILL BE FOLLOWING THE TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN: 0008-16 IN MAKING THE REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY VIN IN THEIR WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM. I'M FORCED TO PAY $1761.75 OUT OF MY POCKET FOR THEIR ENGINE FLAW. I'M SO DISAPPOINTED WITH TOYOTA, THE WHOLE REASON I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE WAS BECAUSE I BELIEVED TOYOTA CARED ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AND THAT THEY MADE A DEPENDABLE VEHICLE, APPARENTLY I'VE BEEN MISLED BY TOYOTA.

- Summary: I GOT INTO 2 ACCIDENTS IN 3 DAYS WHILE PARKING INTO OR OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. THE FIRST ACCIDENT 07/04/2020, MY CAR WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT. I PLACED THE CAR IN REVERSE AND SUDDENLY IT ACCELERATED AND THE BRAKES FAILED TO WORK. MY VEHICLE ONLY STOPPED AFTER CRASHING INTO THE CAR BEHIND ME. THE SECOND ACCIDENT HAPPEN 7/7/2020 WHILE PULLING FORWARD INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND BRAKES FAILED TO WORK AGAIN. I CRASHED INTO A CEMENT POLE WHICH STOPPED MY VEHICLE. I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHY THESE 2 DANGEROUS ACCIDENTS OCCURRED? MY VEHICLE WAS JUST REPAIRED OVER A WEEK BC THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. THE MECHANIC SAID THE PROBLEM WAS FROM A CATALYTIC CONVERTER THAT WAS CLOGGED, SO HE REPLACED IT WITH A NEW OEM PART. THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS BLOWING HOT ALSO, SO THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE AIR COMPRESSOR IN CAR AT THE SAME TIME. I WISH TO FILE A REPORT BASED ON THE "SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION" DANGER.

- VIN: JF1ZNAA15D2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: RECALLED FOR POSSIBILITY OF A VALVE SPRING BREAKING POTENTIALLY CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STOP WORKING WHILE UNDER DRIVING CONDITIONS. RECALL NOTICE INDICATED THAT THE TIME FOR REPAIRS WAS APPROXIMATELY 2 DAYS AND THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT VALDOSTA TOYOTA WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS SCHEDULED FOR REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TIO THE DEALERSHIP ON 3-31-19 AND DROPPED OFF. IT WAS FINALLY FINISHED AND PICKED UP ON 4-20-19. THE REASONS THAT WE WERE GIVEN BY THE DEALERSHIP FOR IT TAKING SO LONG FOR THE REPAIRS WAS THAT THE TECHNICIAN DOING THE REPAIRS WAS CONTINUALLY NOT AT WORK. WITHIN A DAY AFTER PICKING THE VEHICLE UP FROM THE DEALER THE ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A CLICKING SOUND. IT WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THE CLICKING SOUND WAS NOT RELATED TO THEIR REPAIRS MADE UNDER THE RECALL, RATHER IT WAS BECAUSE THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS DEFECTIVE AND IT WOULD COST US $1940+ FOR IT TO BE REPAIRED. 5 DAYS AFTER PICKING THE VEHICLE UP FROM THE DEALER THE ENGINE CONPLETELY QUIT AS THE VEHICLE WAS ABOUT TO TURN ONTO ANOTHER ROAD AFTER STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN.. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT APPEARED THE PROBLEM WAS THE FLY WHEEL, NOT RELATED TO THEIR REPAIR. THERE NEVER HAD BEEN ANY PROBLEM WITH THE PERFORMACE OF THIS VEHICLE AND ITS' ENGINE BEFORE VALDOSTA TOYOTA TOOK THE ENGINE APART TO MAKE THE RECALL REPAIRS. WE HAVE NOW BEEN TOLD THAT A NUMBER OF OTHER CARS ARE IN FOR NORMAL REPAIRS AND THAT THEY WILL GET TO OUR CAR WHENEVER THEY CAN. WE ARE CERTAIN THAT VALDOSTA TOYOTA EITHER DID NOT PROPERLY REPAIR THE ENGINE DURING THE RECALL REPAIRS OR THAT THEY DID FURTHER DAMAGE TO IT WHILE THEY WERE DOING THE REPAIRS.

"I can't stop smiling since I've had it" was my response when a lady who practically ran across the parking lot asked how I liked it.I've had others taking pictures of it on their phones, people missing their "green light" at intersections because they were staring at it, another fella in a cammed up Corvette laugh with me when I motioned that I'd race him off the light.I never would have thought that this little commuter car would be such a blast to drive. It's smooth, quiet, roomy, solid and quick off the light.I drive alone, so I folded the back seats down, bought the cargo carpet and use it as a hatchback.

I bought this car in Los Angeles and drove it back to NYC. At first, I was considering a Lexus LX 470, but then I realized that finding parking in the city would be impossible. So, I took the southern route all the way back to NYC. Throughout the trip, I was able to maintain an average of 36 mpg while driving at speeds of 70 to 85 mph. The car felt great on the highway, just like any other small car. Before purchasing the 2013 IQ, I rented a mini cooper, which was much more cramped and 2+ feet longer. When I drove into NYC, I was able to find a parking spot very quickly and have been able to park in spots where no other cars could fit 4 out of 5 times. Overall, it's been a great experience!

This is a great opportunity to go green and help save the planet from global warming! The Toyota is a reliable car that is perfect for two people and shopping bags. The automatic transmission is shiftlessly smooth and reminds me of the very old Dynaflow. It is easy to drive and provides a smooth ride on good roads. When two people are in the car, you will think it is full-sized. The quality is good and the radio is excellent! Although the car has been discontinued by Toyota, there are bargains out there on the used car market for a great little city car. I did take it out on the expressway and it did nicely at 65 mph. Just remember to drive with two hands on the steering wheel! Also, be aware that it gives a rough ride on rough roads. Don't worry about the transmission dipstick, as it is nonexistent. The transmission is sealed and supposedly good for 120,000 miles. Basically, it's maintenance-free! There is a dipstick for engine oil, so use 0 W 20 weight. If you buy one, enjoy it and adjust as needed. I loved this car, but I traded it for a 1948 Crosley, a 50 mpg economy car that was way ahead of its time.

At 5'11, I have plenty of head and leg room in this car, which is important since I work out of it. It gets an impressive 37 mpg in both city and highway driving, making it a great choice for anyone looking to save on gas. The car turns on a dime, making it easy to navigate even the tightest spots. Unlike my previous Mini, this car has no blindspots, providing me with a phenomenal view in all directions. I also appreciate the lifetime plan that includes free oil changes and regular maintenance, as well as roadside assistance. Additionally, the car comes with a 3 year/36k warranty. There's even a convenient pull-out drawer under the passenger seat for my laptop. The power windows go completely down with just one touch, and I can easily control the radio from my steering wheel. The Bluetooth is also clear and easy to use, and my iPod sounds great through the car's speakers.

I've owned many cars in the past. Recently, I decided to trade in my truck for a new vehicle. On my way to work last Thursday, I stopped to put $25 worth of gas in the truck. However, the next day after work, the gas light came on and I was frustrated. Luckily, I was near the Toyota dealer and decided to take a look at their Scions. My daughter has one and I was impressed with its reliability. I learned that the IQ was the cheapest to maintain over 3 years, so I decided to trade in my truck for the IQ. The process was easy and I was on my way in no time!

I found the editor's comment about larger cars at the same price quite amusing. After all, the whole point of this car is its small size. Personally, I love zipping around in a tiny car like this. However, I do wish it had a bit more zip to it. Additionally, the fuel economy isn't much better than my Mazda CX-5 SUV, which is a shame. At startup, the engine sounds like there are loose marbles inside, and it can make other uninspiring noises from time to time. Unfortunately, the brake pedal also makes a loud, annoying clicking noise (although Toyota assures me that this is normal). It doesn't offer a lot of features for the money, but the tiny size is definitely a plus point.

I found the editor's comment about larger cars at the same price quite amusing. After all, the whole point of this car is its small size, which is perfect for people like me who want a zippy little car to get around in. However, I have noticed that it doesn't quite have the zip I was hoping for, and the fuel economy isn't much better than my Mazda CX-5 SUV. At startup, the engine sounds like there are loose marbles inside, and it can make other uninspiring noises from time to time. Additionally, the brake pedal makes a loud, annoying clicking noise (although Toyota assures me that this is normal). The comment by the editor that there are larger cars at the same price is hilarious. The whole idea about this car is being small. People like me want a tiny car to zip around. Only problem is that the car doesn't zip very much. And for a tiny car the fuel economy is not much better than my Mazda CX-5 SUV. The engine sounds like there are loose marbles inside at startup, and also makes other uninspiring noises from time to time. The brake pedal makes loud annoying clicking noise (normal noise, according to Toyota). It doesn't offer a lot of features for the money. The only good thing about it is the tiny size.

I bought this IQ with the expectation of great MPG, but unfortunately, I only averaged about 27mph. After doing some research on Google, I found that others had the same issue. It's disappointing that a tiny car like this can't achieve better fuel efficiency. I ended up returning the car with only 100 miles on it and was quite frustrated. Instead, I opted for a Prius C. While the back seats do touch the front seats, which can be a bit uncomfortable, I appreciate the extra space it provides. It's worth noting that you need to remove the headrests to fold the back seats, but overall, it's a functional feature. Although the IQ's back seats don't offer much storage space, I understand that they're there to accommodate up to four passengers. Perhaps it would be better to remove them entirely if they're not useful.

For a small car, it may not have the zip or exceptional fuel economy that you would expect. Additionally, it does not have rear disc brakes or any fancy features to justify its 'premium' compact branding. The engine can make a terrible noise and sound like it has valve problems, but it usually quiets down when warmed up, which may give some doubt to its long-term reliability. The steering wheel can make scraping sounds, and the brake pedal can make loud and annoying clicking sounds. However, it is important to note that Toyota technology and quality are not present in this car.
