Common Porsche 718 cayman problems
The Porsche 718 Cayman, a highly regarded sports car, is known for its performance and style. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Here are some issues that owners have reported, based on the search results:
- Fuel lines: An issue with the fuel lines in the engine compartment of Caymans made between 17 July 2019 and 15 January 2020 has been reported. It is advisable to contact your local Porsche dealer for further information.
- Engine failures: The earliest Cayman models had various engine problems, with oil starvation being the most common issue, particularly in the 3.4-liter models. Additionally, several of the earlier models of Caymans had issues with the intermediate shaft bearing (IMS). However, Porsche introduced an upgrade in 2006 to protect the engine against similar issues.
- Oil leaks: Degraded engine gaskets and oil leaks are common issues in older cars, but even used Cayman had similar problems. One of the most usual and alarming problems on the Cayman is that rear oil seals start leaking oil. A leaking rear main seal appears through the bell housing joint between the center of the engine and transmission joint. The leaking seal will quickly destroy a clutch in a manual car if not addressed promptly and can be a sign of other issues, such as spark plug seals and oil cooler seals.
- Rear axle carrier side: In 2021, Porsche Cars North America had to recall several 2014 and 2015 model Cayman, Cayman S, and Cayman GTS vehicles due to the rear-axle carrier side potentially fracturing. This issue could lead to accidents, and Porsche is replacing the rear-axle carrier side sections for free; however, recalls can be stressful and time-wasting activities.
- CEL and misfire at higher RPM: Some owners have reported that the engine has issues when it runs above 4,000 rpm, causing a misfire on a cylinder. This forces the engine to quit the cylinder. However, some experts downplay this problem, insisting that it's not a significant issue.
- Low battery power: Weak batteries and other battery management problems are common issues with the Porsche Cayman. In 2021, Porsche was forced to recall the Taycan because of power loss problems. The Cayman has also had hitches with flat batteries, creating additional headaches for the owners of this luxury vehicle.
These common problems do not necessarily mean that owning a Porsche 718 Cayman will be a negative experience. However, it is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing and maintaining a Cayman.
Are Porsche Cayman 718 reliable?
Its reliability rating of only 77.9% is concerning. Porsche as a brand fared better, however. It came 19th out of 32 manufacturers featured – a respectable result. If you would like to see the full reliability list, head to the What Car?
What is the common problem with the Porsche Cayman?
Likely Oil Leaks
The Porsche Cayman has a number of common sources for leaking oil. Some of the most common include rear main seal (see below), valve covers, spark plug seals and oil cooler seals. Less common are leaks from the cam seals and scavenger oil pump seal.
Is a Porsche 718 expensive to maintain?
Estimates from RepairPal put the average annual repair and maintenance cost for a Porsche at $1,192 per year, which is 83% higher than the industry average for all vehicles.
How many miles will a Porsche 718 Cayman last?
Porsche Boxster and Cayman models have similar mileage of around 150,000 to 200,000. This translates into 11 to 15 years with average use. However, it's not uncommon for these two models to surpass the estimated lifespan.

- Summary: I have a Porsche 718 Cayman [XXX] I purchase this vehicle October 16, 2020 with only 1,500 miles on the odometer from Porsche of Tucson 4690 E 22nd St, Tucson, AZ 85711. Purchase Porsche extended platinum warranty for 96/100,000 miles. My passenger side 3- point seatbelt will not retract back properly. This is definitely a safety issue for the passenger. I set up an appointment to have it fix with the Porsche of Tucson dealership. I was told that it would not be covered under the platinum warranty. The odometer mileage I have now on my Porsche 718 Cayman is 13,685. I believe it should be covered due to a safety issue and especially with low mileage on the Porsche 718 Cayman with passenger seat belt not retracting back it stays loose on the passenger when seat belt is on. As a driver I never sit in the passenger side and just recently notice the belt being twisted and not properly aligned when my passenger complaint about belt. BOTH CARS SUFFER FROM THE SAME DANGEROUS DESIGN DEFECT: AN EXCESSIVELY PROTRUDING CENTRAL EXHAUST PIPE. THE FIRST INJURY WAS SUSTAINED ON FEBRUARY 19, 2017, WHEN I LEANED AGAINST MY 2014 BOXSTER S, AND THE REAR OF MY CALF MADE DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE PROTRUDING EXHAUST PIPE. THE SECOND INJURY OCCURRED ON AUGUST 11, 2018, WHEN I PLACED A SUITCASE IN THE TRUNK OF MY 2017 718 CAYMAN, AND THE FRONT OF MY CALF TOUCHED THE EXHAUST. THE 718/BOXSTER S EXHAUSTS ARE UNREASONABLY DANGEROUS AS IT IS EXTREMELY EASY, EVEN WHEN BEING VERY CAREFUL, TO INADVERTENTLY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE HOT PIPES. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE PURPORTED 'WARNINGS' IN THE OWNERS' MANUALS, THEY ARE INSUFFICIENT AND FLAT-OUT ABSURD, AS THEY CANNOT BE ADHERED TO IF ONE USES THE TRUNK. I AM ASKING THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THIS PATENTLY DANGEROUS DESIGN DEFECT.
