Kia Forte problems

The Kia Forte, known as the K3 in Asia, the Forte K3 or Shuma in China and Cerato in South America, Australia, New Zealand and Russia, is a compact car manufactured by South Korean automaker Kia since mid-2008, replacing the Kia Spectra. It is available in two-door coupe, four-door sedan, five-door hatchback variants. It is not available in Europe, where the similar sized Kia Ceed is offered (except for Russia and Ukraine, where the Ceed and the Forte are both available).

In some markets, such as Costa Rica, Australia and Brazil, the Forte is marketed as Kia Cerato, replacing its predecessor of the same name. In Colombia and Singapore, the name Cerato Forte was used for the second generation, while Naza Automotive Manufacturing of Malaysia has assembled the vehicle since 2009, selling it there under the name Naza Forte.

First generation (TD; 2008)

The first generation Forte was introduced in 2008. In North America, the Forte replaced the Kia Spectra, while the Forte retained the Cerato name in numerous markets. It shares the same platform as the Hyundai Avante/Elantra (HD), though employing a torsion-beam rear suspension in place of the Elantra's multilink design. Kia has stated that the Forte was specifically designed to target younger buyers attracted to sharper auto designs.

Succeeding the first generation Cerato or second generation Spectra, several elements of the interior and suspension were changed. The car received a wider (4 cm) and longer (3 cm) body, a longer (4 cm) wheelbase and a wider (7 cm) gauge. However, ground clearance was reduced by a centimeter, thereby reducing the height by a centimeter. At the same time, the design of the rear suspension was simplified, which instead of independent multilink thrust became semi-dependent double-lever, with an elastic beam, which made it more reliable and easy to repair and maintain.

Three body styles, which are compact 4-door sedan, 5-door hatchback, and a new 2-door coupe body style was introduced.

Common Kia Forte problems

The Kia Forte is a popular compact car that offers affordability, practicality, and reliability. However, some model years have their fair share of problems, particularly with the engine and speakers.

One common issue with the Kia Forte is speakers not working due to a software glitch. This problem affects the 2011-2016 and 2018 models, with symptoms including no sound from the speakers at all, preventing the use of the radio, CD player, and navigation feature. This issue typically occurs around 73,000 miles and can be resolved with a hard reset by disconnecting the car's negative battery terminal and reconnecting it after 15 minutes. If this doesn't work, a mechanic should be consulted for further diagnosis.

Another common problem with the Kia Forte is engine issues, particularly in the 2017 model. These problems can manifest as abnormal knocking sounds, excessive stalling, shaking, idling, misfiring, and complete engine failure. In some cases, the engine may suddenly die while driving, increasing the risk of accidents. These engine problems have been linked to bad ignition coils, which can cause multiple crashes and injuries. Owners have reported taking their subcompacts to dealerships for ignition coil replacements, but the root cause of the premature wear is unknown.

Exterior lighting malfunctions are also a common problem with the Kia Forte, particularly in the 2015 model. All exterior lights, including headlights, may randomly malfunction for no apparent reason, which can be bothersome to deal with.

The 2014 Kia Forte has also had issues with leaky interiors, which have been addressed with recalls and free part replacements at dealerships. Structural problems, such as steering coupler failures and trunk latch issues, are also common in the 2014 model. Steering coupler failures can cause a ticking noise when rotating the steering wheel, while trunk latch issues can be caused by a faulty wiring harness or physical button. These issues can be resolved with wiring harness replacements and/or button replacements.

In addition to these common problems, the Kia Forte has also had issues with airbag problems, particularly in the 2014 model. Owners have reported that their airbag light illuminates while driving, and in more severe cases, their airbags failed to deploy entirely during an accident. While there have not been recalls issued for these airbag problems in the 2014-2016 models, newer models have received recalls to address the issue.

Electronic malfunctions are also a common problem with the Kia Forte, particularly in the 2014 model. These malfunctions can cause faulty cooling fans, faulty brake pedal stoppers, and premature bulb burnout. These issues can increase the risk of engine fires, accidents, and expensive repairs. Recalls have been issued to address these electrical issues, and dealerships will replace the necessary parts at no cost to the vehicle owner.

In summary, the Kia Forte is a reliable and stylish vehicle, but some model years have common problems that potential owners should be aware of. Speaker issues, engine problems, exterior lighting malfunctions, leaky interiors, structural problems, and electronic malfunctions are some of the most common issues reported by owners. If you are considering purchasing a Kia Forte, it is recommended to research the specific model year and any recalls or common problems associated with it to ensure a safe and reliable driving experience.

Kia Forte

Is the Kia Forte a reliable car?

The 2024 Kia Forte has a predicted reliability score of 87 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

What years did Kia Forte have engine problems?

The most severe problem with the Kia Forte is with the Theta II engine found in 2012 to 2015 models. This engine design is known to be highly problematic, with serious issues affecting Fortes equipped with the 2.0L or 2.4L engines. Engine problems include oil leaks, knocks, and complete engine failure.

What are the downsides to the Kia Forte?

Less Engaging Driving Experience

While the Forte provides a smooth and comfortable ride, it may not deliver the same level of driving dynamics or sportiness as some of its competitors. The steering and handling can feel slightly detached, which might be a drawback for those seeking a more engaging driving experience.

Why not to buy Kia Forte?

The budget-friendly, compact Forte has some positives, including simple controls and impressive fuel economy. However, it suffers from a too-stiff ride and a noisy cabin.

  • VIN: 3KPF44AC2NE
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I got into an accident i On December 10th, 2023 my car was totaled out. My steering wheel felt like it was doing its own thing and I crashed straight into a curb and some rocks. I was injured and they had just fixed my steering because of the recall but I don’t know if they did it correctly
Kia Forte 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: KNAFK4A69F5
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine lost pressure while being driven on the interstate. My daughter was able to pull over and then the car began to smoke. She and a passenger immediately exited the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the nearest shop and was diagnosed with engine failure. My daughter indicated that no check engine light illuminated nor did the temperature gauge note that the vehicle was overheating, but it just began to lose pressure even when she tried to accelerate. I was researching cost to have the engine replaced and came across other Forte owner's testimony that they have had engine problems as well, but the Forte was not listed under the Kia recall for engine issues. But perhaps, it should be.
Kia Forte 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 3KPFL4A87HE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 92,000 miles - check engine light flashing Dealership mechanic says “leaking oil” Oil level barely touching dipstick. Right at 5,000 miles since synthetic oil change. Have a concrete driveway and car has not leaked oil at all. Mechanic suggested replacing oil pan gasket. There is an oil pan recall on 2017 & 2018 Kia Forte but supposedly my car isn’t covered. Still under warranty but dealership claims it’s not covered under that either. I think all 2017 & 2018 Kia Fortes should be covered under the recall if we are also having the same issues. Having my lawyer friend look into this for me.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KNAFW6A30D5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On [XXX] , my 2013 Kia Forte SX Koup caught fire while I was driving on the tollway. Kia failed to notify me that I was sold a Lemon Car, leading to this life-threatening incident. The steering wheel and gas pedal became unresponsive, and my brakes stiffened, making it extremely difficult to stop. I feared for my life and safety as I struggled to pull over. After parking, I smelled fumes and saw fire under the hood. I called 911, and emergency services arrived to extinguish the fire. As a result, I now have respiratory issues from inhaling fumes, migraines from hitting my head, and a pulled muscle from forcing the locked steering. I have been unable to seek medical care due to the financial burden of renting a car, which has cost me $1,083.74 so far, using funds intended for rent. I contacted Kia on October 9th, 2024, but they delayed their response until October 15th. Since then, they have continuously prolonged the process, now saying it will take over a month and a half. Kia also failed to notify me of a recall related to this issue, which I later discovered on my own. I am requesting immediate action from Kia, including reimbursement for my rental, vehicle replacement, and compensation for medical expenses. Kia's delays and lack of concern for my safety and well-being are unacceptable. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: Was driving and vehicle started to stall and slow in traffic with no warning lights at all. Discovered that oil was empty after we had checked it before a trip. No oil warning lights came on to tell us that was no oil. In turn this damaged our vehicles timing chain and it needs repaired. I spoke with dealership and wanted them to do an oil consumption test because there was a problem and should not be using oil and not warning you of a low or no oil. They advised that was not an issue and could not do it. There are recalls on Kias for this exact thing but not my model. This is a safety issue because could case an accident without any warning.

  • Summary: So I've been going back and forth with Kia for a year now my car completely lost all capability of driving and reversing after taking it to the dealer at Perris kia they claimed it was my wiring harness and that I needed to pay $7,200 because I'm the second owner of the vehicle and it's not covered under their 60,000 mile warranty as I have 70,000 on my vehicle that was after 3 months of them having my car and I was not given a rental during this time and when I didn't have the 7200 fixed they threatened to put a lien on my car if I didn't tow it that day out of there so I went and got it and after further research that's the motor blower connector actually melted and messed up the wiring harness which I found on your website that Kia did acknowledge the fact that it is a defective part and how to fix it now I am trying to get my car fixed and they are not cooperating with me and saying that I'm out of warranty but it's not a warranty issue it's a defective part.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-22
  • VIN: 3KPF24ADXKE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: approximately July 2023, while my car was still under warranty @ 90k miles through KIA, I took it in due to excessive oil burning/leaking, engine "missing". They performed an Oil Consumption Test, which failed the 1st, but "passed" the 2nd phase. I was told to put in Oil Stabilizer in between oil changes. Car continued to burn oil. Warranty has since expired, and car is STILL running shabby. I took it in & another Consumption test was run, with negative results per KIA. I then took it to MY mechanic, who performed an oil dye test to see where the problem is. Results were my engine had "Blow by", and that I would need to replace engine. I then took it BACK to KIA 2 weeks AFTER 2nd consumption test and was told I in fact DO need a new engine, 2 catalytic converters (reason it has been running shabby the past year plus) and a manifold accessory kit. I stated to them that I presented this issue well within the KIA warranty guidelines & informed my vehicle was perfectly fine. But was told that now my vehicle is out of warranty so I am solely responsible for ALL repairs. They stated they requested a Goodwill Exception through KIA but I was denied. I submitted EVERY receipt of repair from other mechanic that was performed since 2020. I simply just want repaired what was failing since my warranty was still in effect. I presented these issues when my car had 90k miles. Vehicle currently has 111,188 miles on it. This has been a devastating, ongoing problem trying to get KIA to do what is well within guidelines of the warranty.

I worried about my safety especially because i have a baby. Any airbag could’ve gone off for no reason. I don’t feel safe in my car. After taking it to Viva Kia here in El Paso, they did not offer any inspections just a number to call. I was scared when they sent me off in a car like that with no diagnostics done. No lights were on prior to this incident so I definitely was not warned about it.

I purchased a 2019 Kia Forte from Dan O'Brien Kia in Concord NH, but unfortunately, I have experienced multiple issues with the car's transmission. Despite having to replace the transmission three times within a year, the service department at Dan O'Brien Kia has not been able to resolve the issue. The safety of my family has been compromised due to the car stalling on the highway twice. As a result, I have lost confidence in the Kia brand and will not be purchasing a Kia again.

I've had this car since April and I drive it a lot for work. Unfortunately, at 18500 miles, the CVT transmission stopped working while I was at a light. After turning the car off and on again, it moved slowly. I did some research and found that multiple other people have had the same issue with their Forte CVT. I brought it to the dealership and they confirmed that I need a new transmission. However, due to the high demand, the part is on back order for 6 weeks. Overall, I really like this car, but this issue is a deal breaker for me.

We purchased our 2014 Kia Forte used from a reputable dealership and initially, it was a great little car. My husband loved its sporty design and impressive fuel efficiency. However, after only two years of ownership and 20,000 miles driven, the car experienced a catastrophic failure without any warning. My husband parked the car in the driveway one night and everything seemed fine, but the next morning, just 15 minutes into his commute, the engine started knocking. Upon inspection, we discovered that the oil wasn't registering and we had to add 2.5 quarts, which the car burned through in just 25 minutes. After letting it sit for a few days, we checked under the hood again and noticed that the radiator was almost dry. Despite having recorded maintenance records, we were told by a few places that it would be more expensive to repair the car than to buy a new engine. We believe that such a catastrophic failure with no warning on a relatively new car with low mileage is unacceptable. We urge Kia to consider a recall on their engines.

Hey there! I see you're interested in the Kia Forte SX hatchback. If you're thinking about buying one, I highly recommend going for the six-speed manual option. In my experience, the 2.4-liter engine doesn't pair well with the six-speed automatic, resulting in slower acceleration and poor fuel efficiency. Interestingly, my previous car was a 2004 Honda Accord EX-L with a manual 5-speed transmission. Despite having less horsepower and torque than the Kia, it was quicker and got better gas mileage. However, the Kia does have its strengths, such as its spacious interior and sleek design. Let me know if you have any questions!

The other day, while driving through a roundabout in my 2017 Kia Forte, my engine locked up on me. Unfortunately, I couldn't take it out of drive, and all of my computer functions shut down, including my screens, radio, and gauges. My sister, who also owns a 2017 Kia Forte, had a similar problem while parked in her driveway. Additionally, both mine and my sister's trunk latches broke within 2 years of ownership, and a friend of ours who has owned 2 Kia Souls has had the same issue. It's quite frustrating. I hope Kia recalls these faulty trunk latches. I'm sharing my experience to help other potential car owners make informed decisions. On a positive note, I recently traded in my Kia for a Subaru Impreza, and I'm very happy with my purchase. If you're in the market for a new car, I highly recommend considering a Subaru.

Very smooth ride. You made a great choice by shopping with Kia again, especially since you loved your previous Optima. The Forte is a roomy car that comes with a lot of great safety features to keep you and your family safe on road trips.

I've driven 34k miles with absolutely no reliability issues. As someone who is nearly 6ft tall and 220lbs, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable I felt in this small car. In fact, I found the footwell to be notably more spacious than both the Focus and Mazda3 I recently rented on business trips. As someone who loves manual transmissions, I specifically chose this car for that reason. The clutch action is very predictable, and gear changes are positive, making driving this car a lot of fun. While it's not exactly a fast car, the manual transmission adds an extra element of excitement to the driving experience. I average about 33mpg in mixed driving and 37+ on sustained freeway trips. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone who enjoys driving and is looking for a reliable and comfortable option.

During my recent vacation, I spent two weeks in a Forte, albeit by mistake. Despite being a bit crowded with three people in the back and suitcases in the trunk, the car handled and accelerated well. On a long highway trip, we even managed to average 47 mpg! I was pleasantly surprised that the transmission did not seem like a CVT and did not exhibit any of the annoyances that those transmissions are known for. However, I do wonder about the reliability of the car after 100,000 miles, and it's worth noting that CVTs are not rebuildable, so a new one would cost around seven grand. One design flaw I noticed is that the hood release latch is too exposed. I accidentally kicked it open three times during my two weeks with the car, but luckily, it only happened when I was getting out. Overall, I had a decent experience with the Forte, and I would recommend it for short trips with a lighter load.

I have a 2021 lxs model. The mileage ranges from over 40 around town to well over 45 on the highway and that's over mountains of North Carolina. I'm really impressed with this car. It drives very well, corners very well, and has very good pickup. The continuous variable transmission takes a little getting used to but it's more than adequate. And of course, the warranty is amazing. Out the door for around $20,000, this value cannot be beaten.

You may have noticed that your vehicle's acceleration is not as strong when going uphill.
