The Kia EV6 (Korean: 기아 이브이식스) is a battery electric compact crossover SUV produced by Kia. Introduced in March 2021, it is the first Kia dedicated electric vehicle, and the first model developed on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. It is also the first model to be named under the new nomenclature designated for a line of Kia electric cars, which will range from EV1 to EV9. The EV6 is the 2022 European Car of the Year.

Overview

The EV6 was released on 2 August 2021 after a set of pictures were revealed on 15 March 2021. Developed under the codename CV, it is the first Kia model based on the E-GMP electric car platform.

The GT model is claimed to have a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time in 3.5 seconds, with dual electric motors producing 430kW of power (576hp) and 740Nm of torque combined, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, a rear electronic limited-slip differential, electronically controlled suspension, and minor exterior and interior changes.

It features a panoramic curved display panel inside, which opens up more space while a controller for transition between infotainment and HVAC below the navigation screen and touch buttons for using heated seat as well as steering wheel further enhance driver usability. The EV6's boot space is 520 L (18.4 cu ft) (VDA standard) and it can be increased up to 1,300 L (45.9 cu ft) when the rear seats are folded. The crossover is claimed to be furnished with eco-friendly materials across the interior, fabric or artificial suede/leatherette seats, and ambient lighting. It's also availbale with an augmented reality head-up display, 360° camera option, remote controlled parking, along with safety technologies including Lane Follow Assist, Highway Driving Assist 2 (semi-autonomous adaptive cruise control) including auto lane changing, AEB collision avoidance, remote smart parking assist and Safe Exit Assist.

Common Kia Ev6 problems

The Kia EV6, a popular electric vehicle (EV), has faced several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include recalls, battery efficiency, charging system problems, and build quality concerns, particularly in the 2022 model year.

One major issue with the 2022 Kia EV6 is the recall due to severe battery efficiency and charging system problems, which has led to numerous customer complaints. Kia has been proactive in addressing these concerns, but the 2022 model year still stands as the worst for the EV6 according to MotorBiscuit.

Another common problem with the Kia EV6 is uneven panel gaps and premature wear on upholstery, which have been reported by owners. Kia has been addressing these concerns through recalls and updates, but potential buyers are still advised to approach the 2022 model with caution.

The Kia EV6's reliability largely depends on the year of manufacture. While the 2022 model faced recalls and problems, the company's proactive measures in addressing these issues reflect its commitment to reliability. The upcoming 2023 model aims to build on this commitment by addressing the earlier version's shortcomings, incorporating improved quality controls, technological advancements, and stringent testing protocols to enhance overall reliability.

One owner of a 2023 Kia EV6 reported dissatisfaction with the lack of over-the-air (OTA) updates compared to Tesla models. The owner also expressed concerns about the charging infrastructure and the compact space of the EV6, which may cause some potential buyers to look for better alternatives.

In terms of build quality, the Kia EV6 has received praise for its phenomenal build quality, especially considering it is a Kia. However, some owners have criticized the Meridian music system for being pathetic and not living up to the hype. The system lacks bass and has high vocals, making it inferior compared to other luxury vehicles in the same price range.

In conclusion, the Kia EV6 has faced several common problems, particularly in the 2022 model year, including recalls, battery efficiency, charging system problems, and build quality concerns. However, Kia has been proactive in addressing these issues, and the upcoming 2023 model aims to build on this commitment to reliability. Potential buyers are advised to consider these issues and the vehicle's reliability score when making their decision.

What is the problem with the Kia EV6?

Warnings the problem is developing can include audible chimes, a Check Electric Vehicle System warning light, a Master warning light, a Charging system warning light, Stop vehicle and check power supply warning light, a power down (turtle) warning light and, eventually, loss of drive power.

Are EV6 reliable?

We expect the 2024 EV6 will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2022 and 2023 models.

How long does the EV6 last?

With a MotorTrendRoad-Trip Range of 260 miles and the ability to replenish its battery with 164 miles of range in just 15 minutes, the EV6 makes traveling with an EV easy.

What is the software problem with the Kia EV?

Kia will recall 56,016 EVs. Errors have been found in software of the integrated charging control units used in 170,000 Hyundai and Kia EVs, which could make it difficult to power a low-voltage battery and lead to the possibility that the vehicles could stop while driving, the ministry said.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
  • VIN: KNDC44LA1N5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: EV6 12v Battery isn't being maintained by the system and has failed and needed replacement. ICCU has been inspected under the recall but not replaced. The 12v battery is out of 36k mile warranty and has to be replaced out of pocket, when early failure is likely due to keeping the battery in an undercharged state.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
  • VIN: KNDC4DLC1N5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I recently experienced a serious safety issue with my less than 3-year-old Kia EV6. The 12-volt battery unexpectedly failed, rendering the vehicle inoperable, including the doors. This occurred twice: once while the battery was still under warranty, and again after the warranty expired. The second failure left my wife and daughter stranded in a dark parking lot at night. Despite numerous online reports of similar incidents, Kia refused to replace the battery under warranty, citing the mileage. This is a significant safety concern, as a failed battery can leave drivers stranded in dangerous situations. I contacted Kia corporate to request compensation for the replacement battery, but they declined. I believe Kia should take responsibility for this widespread issue and replace these defective batteries at no cost to consumers.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: KNDC34LA5P5
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Car vibrated to degree it was hard to control. Initial tire balancing did not fix the issue. The tire was removed from the rim and a separated balled-up foam tire liner was found and removed. My concern is if this happens again in one of the other tires and causes an accident.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-13
  • VIN: KNDC44LA4P5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Vehicle does not charge at the full 11 kW it's rated for on a level 2 EVSE. It gets charge interrupted. I've had the SC311 installed which causes the car to lower the charging rate automatically instead of just dropping charge. But I still can't get the full charge rate. This occurs on my home level 2 EVSE, on each of the 12 level 2 EVSE ports I use at work, and out in town. The charging port gets extremely hot when charging and is not designed to pass the full 50 amps it's rated for. It struggles at anything over 25 amps. The extreme temperatures of the charging port can cause a fire or burns to people. The car needs to be recalled and the J1772 charging port and sensors needs to be replaced. This complaint is very common in the various EV6 owner's forums.

  • Summary: I was pulling into a mall parking lot. The vehicle started beeping and popped up a message on the dash saying "stop vehicle and check power supply". The vehicle slowed to maximum 25 miles per hour. The battery died completely the vehicle has no power at all and cannot be driven or even moved off the roadway - there is no way to even get it into neutral now. The dealership wont look at the vehicle for 2-3 weeks even though it is only 1 year old. I did pull off the road before all this happened but it was so sudden and happened so quickly that I was very aware of how dangerous this could have been had I not heeded that warning immediately.

  • Summary: On multiple occasions, while driving on the freeway, the vehicle experienced a clunking noise and complete loss of propulsion. Safety was put at risk as the vehicle had to navigate off to the shoulder of the freeway at a speed significantly slower (due to no acceleration available) than traffic with reduced braking capability. Once on the shoulder the vehicle needs to be turned off then on again then it functions as normal. Due to the intermittency of the issue, the dealer was not able to reproduce the problem, therefore they will not fix it. When the issue occurs, there are no warning messages on the display. The dealer has stated there are no error codes stored in the computer. This issue seemed to go away after an ICCU fix was applied, but came back after the ICCU recall was recently applied. • Summary: The sunroof glass exploded on a hot day while my wife and I were in the car traveling 55 mph with the air-conditioning on. The remaining glass edges were flared up and outward. The sunroof glass was fully closed and the cloth sun shade covered the glass. It was either improperly installed or the materials could not withstand the heat. Nothing impacted the glass. The glass could have cut & injured us badly or blinded us, causing an accident with another vehicle or property. I felt this was a manufacturer's defect, but Kia denied us a warranty repair. I have pictures of the large hole in the middle of the glass. The vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was available for inspection. My insurance was notified. There was no warning or symptoms of this problem.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-18

  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My Kia EV6, AWD Wind has the exact problem described in this Ionic 5 video, [XXX] , which addresses your TSB 24-EV-003H. It appears my EV6 uses the same electric oil pump (EOP) as the Ionic 5, so I am not sure why the EV6 was not included in your TSB? The first 14 months I owned my car, I loved it, then in June after I started driving for 45 to 60 mins, the car ride started becoming rough or unsmooth. After researching it on the Internet and purchasing some diagnostic tools, I figured out, that when I start driving the car there is a demand signal for the EOP but the pump has no rpm, no torque and no DC current. Depending on driving conditions, it appears the rear motor stops propelling the car when it reaches 190 to 205 degrees and the front motor kicks in to do all the propulsion. Under the front motor propulsion, the car has a definite “lag” in responsiveness which I consider extremely unsafe as I expect to get an instantaneous response when I step on the accelerator not a lethargic response with no “zip”. It is similar to the difference between a turbojet engine and a turbofan engine. It has been to my Kia dealership’s service dept where they told me they duplicated the the switch from the rear to the front motor but after talking to Kia this condition was “normal” as the computer calculated this was the most efficient operation of the car I said that was BS and asked them if they checked the oil pump and was told yes. Bottom line, it’s the same EOP as the Ionic 5 and the EV6 has the same problems with it except there is no displayed fault code so Kia fails to acknowledge the problem. Also, based on what I see when the motors switch, the on board screen display shows the front motor with 5-7 bars of whatever the measurement is and the rear motor has only 1 or 0 bars but the OBD data shows both motors with the same rpm? Three EV6 problems: EOP inoperative, no fault code, data disconnect (OBD vs displayed data). INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: Originally this 2022 Kia EV6 on the dashboard was showing 225-230 miles at 100% charge. Then the dashboard charge at 100% showed only 180 miles. I got the Recall Notice about this matter, took it in to the Kia dealer. They did a software download and then the dashboard charge at 100% showed 195 miles. I took it back and Kia did another software download, then the dashboard charge at 100% showed 205 miles. Kia declared my EV6 was fixed. I have driven it only 10,000 miles !!!! The software download did NOT fix the problem because it is still not showing the pre-software problem charge at 225 miles. This is a 10% loss of range

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Kia EV6. The contact stated that the controls for the heating and cooling system on the steering wheel were too close and were a distraction. The contact stated that sunlight made it difficult to check the controls. While checking the features, the contact veered off the road. The contact stated that his hands lightly touched the controls, and he was unable to determine if the features were activated for the heated seats or the steering wheel. The contact stated that the controls needed to be less sensitive. The seats and steering wheel became hot. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 4,000.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-03
  • VIN: KNDC5DLE9P5
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The brake lights illuminate too early and often under [even very] gentle deceleration. My '23 EV6 GT is driven primarily in Level 1 (minimal) regenerative braking mode and the threshold for brake light activation clearly is far too low. The appearance of "riding the brakes" is dangerous because those who follow are not alerted when the driver transitions from [essentially] coasting to actually hitting the brakes. Also, at least in my mid-Atlantic suburban area, even the appearance of "brake checking" other drivers incites road rage, which I experience most days, especially when using cruise control, unless driving with regenerative braking disabled (Level 0). SC273 was necessary and prudent because the brake lights failed to illuminate under significant deceleration, confusing those who follow. SA541 was necessary and prudent because the brake lights illuminated inconsistently on uneven road surfaces, confusing those who follow. Another VCU software logic upgrade is necessary and prudent because the brake lights fail to distinguish between [essentially] coasting vs. significant deceleration, confusing those who follow, and potentially (demonstrably!) inciting road rage. Other owners agree: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

    Vehicle year: 2023

As the owner of Two EV6 2022 EV6 wind2023 EV6 GT line, I have been experiencing issues with charging the battery. Despite charging at home at night, the charge gets interrupted without any apparent reason, leaving me with no charge in the morning. Although I have contacted Kia, I have not been able to find a Kia approved technician to take a look at my problem. While Kia has suggested that the issue may be with my charger, I have ruled this out as my GT EV6 charges without any problems. As a result, I am disappointed with Kia's response to my issue.

  2. Edgar Nienow 2025-03-04

    Vehicle year: 2023

The EV6 is a super comfortable car, perfect for relaxed drives. The suspension is well balanced, not too stiff and not too soft. The front seats are comfortable, although they feel more like seats you sit on rather than in. The car is relatively silent, making for a peaceful ride. Charging is fast, with 80% reached from 7% in just 21 minutes. However, the steering is a bit disappointing, lacking feedback and directness. Additionally, the visibility could be improved, with rather thick a pillars and side mirror covers that block visibility to the right side. Lastly, it would be great if the speedometer and range indicator were displayed in the center of the instrument cluster, as they are often hidden by the steering wheel. Overall, the EV6 is a great car for comfortable and peaceful drives, with some room for improvement in certain areas.

  3. Vince Cronin 2025-01-13

After driving for a year, the reviewer encountered a number of issues. The center console was poorly designed and caused a lot of rattling, which made it difficult to store anything without getting OCD. The brakes were great under normal conditions, but when activated over a manhole cover in the rain, the ABS system went haywire, which was quite frightening. The range was not accurate, and Hyundai/KIA was sued for overstating gas mileage on ICE cars. The Wind model did not come with ambient lighting, and the headlights were not great. The fit and finish were average, and the Meridian sound system was not impressive. The service department could use some improvement. Despite these issues, the car was fun to drive, quiet, and mostly smooth riding. The reviewer paid 3k over MSRP 51k, 10/22, and after one year and 5,000 miles, the car was in perfect condition and was offered 30k at Carmax. That's KIA.

I purchased my 2022 EV-6 GT-Line AWD in May of 2022. It was a fantastic experience driving it, with its sporty design and advanced technology. However, I would like to share some important information with you. The AWD model has a maximum range of 274 miles, which can vary depending on the weather and your driving habits. It's important to keep the battery between 20-80% charge most of the time, and only charge it up to 100% right before going on a long drive. For daily driving, you can charge it to 80% which gives you 212 miles range and recharge at 20% which is 53 miles range, leaving you with a usable range of 159 miles. In extremely cold conditions, electric cars can lose up to 40% range. Additionally, the EV tax credit is non-refundable, which means it will only come off what you owe the IRS up to $7,500. To benefit from the EV tax credit, make sure you adjust your payroll deductions so that you will owe the IRS when it comes time to do your taxes. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision about purchasing an EV.

The car is a decent vehicle, but unfortunately, the service in the DMV area is not up to par. It seems that very few technicians are familiar with the car, and even dealerships that have technicians won't be able to service it for weeks. I had a critical battery management system failure after only 3900 miles, and I was unable to contact corporate. Local dealerships were not helpful either, and they even tried to find a way out of honoring the warranty. If you're looking for a reliable vehicle with good service, I would recommend a Tesla or another brand. They will at least provide you with the service you need.

I have a T-shirt with a picture of a Harley Road King and the caption 'If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand.' That's how I feel about my 2022 Kia EV6 First Edition. As someone who has owned 22 vehicles, mostly performance-oriented, I have to say that the EV6 is my favorite. It provides a driving experience that must be experienced to be believed, from the eerie quiet to the instant-on torque of the two motors. Look, electric vehicles aren't for everyone, but for me, the EV6's 277-mile range is more than enough since I don't need a car for long distances (there's an Audi A6 diesel in the garage for that). I installed a level 2 charger in my garage so I can charge overnight and always have a full tank of electrons. The cost of running and maintaining it is less than 1/3 that of my previous vehicle, a Mustang GT. It's fast, nimble, and a pleasure to drive on the back roads of Central Texas. I often find myself looking for an excuse to take it out of the garage. It's like I'm 16 years old again!

Last October, I reserved a 2022 Ford Mustang Mach E Premium Long Range AWD, but unfortunately, I have received limited production timing information from Ford. The local Ford dealer I selected has also provided no input regarding the estimated timing of production. However, the KIA EV 6 caught my eye last summer when it was introduced to the U.S. market. Although I did not reserve a vehicle at that time, I continued to follow media updates and test reviews of the EV 6. In early February, I started checking local dealers' inventory and was lucky enough to find an EV 6 GT Line AWD that had just arrived at the same dealer group I purchased my 2019 Audi A4 allroad prestige through. With all the delivery delays and long production times, I immediately arranged a test drive to confirm the mostly glowing reviews the EV 6 was getting. My biggest concern was some reports of a too firm ride and particularly how it handled sharper impacts like expansion joints and the infamous Michigan potholes. However, I was immediately impressed by the quality of the vehicle both inside and outside. The panel gaps were excellent, and the features of the GT Line were equal to those of my allroad prestige. I really appreciated the blind spot view images that come up with turn signal activation - a feature lacking in my Audi. Considering you get a 360 camera (with high resolution display), a Heads Up Display, Smart Cruise Control, 14 speaker stereo system, Powered Sun Roof and a full group of safety technologies, I was very impressed with the GT Line EV6. During my test ride, I found the ride to be very controlled, with sharper impacts damped to the point that expected cabin intrusions were handled extremely well. Once I confirmed that I could purchase the vehicle at MSRP, I immediately placed a deposit and arranged completion of purchase for the following week. I can confidently say that my ownership experience and satisfaction with the EV 6 deserves a 5-star rating. There are a few items that have been noted or reported in reviews, such as the two-tiered stereo/HVAC control panel that can accidentally switch to HVAC mode when you manually try to adjust the volume knob. However, I have found a solution by using the steering wheel volume control, which is actually more convenient and safe once your brain is trained. While there are areas for improvement, such as the addition of more soft-touch and higher quality interior surfaces and a more intuitive voice recognition system with expanded control features, I find all the positive elements of this vehicle move it into the higher ranks of sporty EVs with the added bonus of hatchback versatility. In many ways, I consider it an electric version of my Audi A4 allroad, which is a great compliment. For some reason, the word 'station wagon' is frowned upon, especially in marketing a vehicle in the U.S., but I considered this EV 6 more of a wagon than an SUV from its release. I am so impressed with KIA's quality and features for the price point that I plan on following the availability of the high-performance GT EV 6 later this year.

My spouse and I recently made the exciting decision to purchase an electric vehicle. We test drove a Ford Mustang Mach e and were impressed, so we ordered one. Unfortunately, due to Ford's inability to deliver, we had to look elsewhere. We test drove an Ionniq 5 and liked it, but couldn't find the exact model we wanted. After some research, we discovered that the EV6, which is based on the same architecture as the Ionniq 5, might be a good fit for us. While we found some EV6s available in Atlanta, the prices were over $10K over MSRP for the 1st Editions, which was not within our budget. However, we were able to find one in Montgomery, AL that was less than 5% over MSRP and decided to purchase it. Although we never thought we'd pay over MSRP for a vehicle, according to the WSJ, 82% of people are paying over MSRP these days for new cars. We've only had the car for a little over a week, so this review is limited. Our initial impression after driving the car home 190 miles from the dealership where we bought it is that the car rides great and is very quiet. We give the Meridian sound system an A+. The interior is a great place to spend time and we much prefer the layout of the EV6 digital screens to the large center screen used by Tesla and Ford on their EVs. The GT Line that we purchased comes very nicely equipped with heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and a 360-degree camera view, which is great when backing out of parking spaces. The seats are comfortable and there is plenty of room despite it being a relatively small vehicle. However, the roofline is low, so egress and ingress might be a bit challenging for tall people. The AWD version that we purchased comes with the extra front motor, raising both horsepower and torque. Acceleration is exhilarating and is stated by Kia to be in the mid 4-second range. There are certainly faster vehicles out there, but this is plenty for us. While this car may not be as nimble as a Porsche Cayman in the twisties, it still handles well despite some body roll in corners, which is to be expected given the battery pack creating a nice low center of gravity. The car feels really solid, and the doors have a nice, satisfying weight when closing.

Thanks to a generous offer by my wife's employer, we were able to charge our EV for free at work. When we decided to purchase an EV, we were surprised to find that the stock had become depleted. Although the Kia EV6 was not our first choice, we fell in love with it after test driving it. After a month of driving, we have saved $400 on fuel and are enjoying the cutting-edge technology and seat cooling. The EV6 also has emergency power supply capabilities, making it feel like a premium choice. We are thrilled with our black-on-black beauty and the new Kia logo adds to the futuristic feel of the car.

I really like the car! Although, I must admit that the technology has a bit of a steep learning curve. The car takes off like a rocket in any of the drive modes and the sound system is fantastic! There are some minor tweaks that could be improved, such as better door handles, and all trim levels are missing a rear window wiper.
