Common Genesis G90 problems

The Genesis G90 is a luxury sedan that has been praised for its comfort, interior, and performance. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported with this vehicle.

One of the most significant issues reported by owners is engine problems with the 5.0-liter engine in the G90 Ultimate AWD model. One owner reported that their car had a myriad of problems, including noise and vibration issues, and eventually went into limp mode after hard acceleration. The dealership was unable to identify the problem for over two months, and it was eventually found that a rocker arm was never installed in the #1 cylinder valve train. This issue highlights serious concerns with Genesis' quality control processes, and the owner ultimately hired a lemon law lawyer to seek a remedy.

Another issue reported by owners is anxiety-prone driver safety features. The 2023 Genesis G90 has a number of safety features that are designed to assist drivers, but some owners have reported that these features can be overly sensitive and cause unnecessary anxiety. For example, the lane departure warning system can be overly aggressive, causing the car to suddenly jerk back into the lane.

The new V6 engines in the 2023 Genesis G90 also have poor fuel economy. Genesis has ditched the 5.0-liter V8 for a pair of twin-turbo V6 engines for this year. While these engines produce more horsepower, they also consume more fuel. This can be a significant drawback for owners who are looking for a luxury sedan that is both powerful and fuel-efficient.

Consumer Reports expects the 2024 G90 to have about average reliability when compared to other new cars. However, it is important to note that the G90 has had some reliability issues in the past. For example, the 2018 Genesis G90 had below-average reliability, with owners reporting problems with the car's engine, transmission, and electrical system.

In summary, while the Genesis G90 is a luxurious and capable sedan, it is not without its issues. Owners have reported problems with the engine, safety features, and fuel economy. It is important for potential buyers to do their research and consider these issues before making a purchase.

What is the problem with the Genesis G90?

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023 Genesis G90 vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side, passenger-side, and rear seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment.

Is the Genesis G90 a reliable car?

That's only somewhat true. According to consumerreports.com, the Genesis G90 has a reliability rating of about two out of five. That's not very good, even compared to other luxury sedans. But not every source is as negative.

How long will a Genesis G90 last?

The Genesis G90 can last for more than 40,000 miles and even up to 100,000 or more miles without many issues.

Do Genesis have engine problems?

Genesis is recalling 2019-2022 G70 sedans, 2018-2020 G80 sedans, and 2017-2022 G90 sedans equipped with 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engines because an oil leak may develop and cause a fire. 28,349 vehicles are included in the vehicle. Earlier this month, Kia recalled some vehicles for the same issue with the same engine.

  • VIN: KMTF34PA9MU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: This is not about a tire failure but rather dangerous mis sizing of tires from factory.I bought the car new. It was never in an accident or had a flat tire and did not have service call until this week at 13000 or so miles.the service included tire rotation and balance, but the service man called and said he wasn’t going to do it because the driver rear tire was the wrong size!!!! It was supposed to be 275/40 R19 101W but was 245/45R19 98W. The two front tires are 245’s as they should be but BOTH rears are supposed to be the 275’s! Clearly this affects handling, wear, stability etc. I’m a very careful driver but someone less careful could roll over on a fast corner turn! How many more Hyundai/ Genesis tires are mis sized? No one checks that when you buy a car!

Genesis G90 2022
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-06
  • Date Complaint: 2022-11-16
  • VIN: KMTF34PA5NU
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: Seat memory #1 was working when I purchased the vehicle on 9/30/2021. Meaning as I got into and started the vehicle the seat automatically went into the correct driver's position to safely drive the vehicle. It was later learned that one of the options on the vehicle was an easy out feature. Meaning the seat would move back all the way so the driver could easily exit the vehicle. The seat at this time did not go back all the way. So, the dealership installed the new part on April 6, 2022, to correct the easy out feature. After the new part was installed the seat memory for #1 would not work at all as before. Meaning the seat would not go into the number #1 position to drive the vehicle safely. Also, the new part after the installation did not correct the easy out situation either meaning the seat will not move all the way back at all for an easy out. Now when I get out of the vehicle, I have to manually repeat manually move the seat all the way back and down to force myself repeat force myself to hit the number #1 seat position when I get back into the vehicle to reset the seat in order to safety drive the vehicle. The dealership has said per Genesis the seat is operating as designed. I was not informed of this design flaw when I purchased the vehicle and if I was, I never would have purchased the vehicle.

Latest negative Genesis G90 car reviews

  1. Friedrich Kutch 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 2020

This car is undeniably a remarkable vehicle and an absolute joy to drive. Despite the unfortunate discontinuation of the Genesis brand by the dealership I purchased from in Jan 2020, I remain confident in the car's exceptional quality. While the Valet service was a significant selling point for me, I understand that it is provided by the dealership and is limited to a radius of about 50 miles from the dealership. Although I was disappointed to learn this, I remain satisfied with my purchase and the luxury experience it provides. My confidence in the Genesis brand remains unwavering, and I look forward to continuing to enjoy my exceptional vehicle.

  2. Dameon Considine 2025-01-01

    Vehicle year: 2020

Hi there! I recently purchased a brand new G90 at full MSRP from Genesis, who stated that they would provide required vehicle maintenance for 3 years and a loaner car. Unfortunately, I have discovered that loaners are not actually provided, and I have been struggling to get routine service and a serious warranty issue handled since June 16, 2020. Despite my efforts, the car was not picked up for service today, August 2, 2021, and I was informed that no loaner would be provided. Can you please help me resolve this issue? Thank you!

  3. Mathew Waters 2024-11-14

    Vehicle year: 2018

This is my 2nd Genesis. Mechanically, they are great and a pleasure to drive. I recently put on my 3rd set of tires with about 46k on the car. This time, I went with Michelins at about $1,700 per set. I found that Michelins ride better than Continentals, which were staunchly recommended by the dealer. The front tires are a different size from the rear, so normal rotation is out of the question. Subsequently, the dealer derated the tire warranty by 50% and told me not to expect much more than 20k miles out of the tires on this vehicle. I didn't know that they were low profile tires when I bought the car (note to self - research better next time;). I had a

  4. Napoleon Watsica 2024-11-04

    Vehicle year: 2022

I wanted to share my experience with the Genesis vehicle. I loved it for 11 months, but then I started experiencing some trouble. Despite owning several Mercedes and a couple of BMWs, I decided to buy a full-size luxury sedan, and what really attracted me to Genesis was the concierge service they offered. However, I live 50 minutes away from the nearest dealership, and I had some trouble with the service. During my first two PMs, I had to call three times and talk to three different people, all of whom told me I was not covered. After finally getting an appointment, they did not show up, and the same thing happened on the second PM appointment. It took three more appointments, and each time it took three 45-minute phone calls to reschedule another. I probably spent 10 hours on the phone arranging PMs. A month after my second PM, the vehicle shut down while I was pulling off the interstate. It had been shaking after decelerating from higher speeds for several weeks. It had to be towed back to the dealer, and it took them a week to even look at my car. The service manager told me they were busy. First, they blamed my gas and charged me $600 to remove the gas. Then it took two weeks to get parts, and two more weeks to get more parts. Fuel injectors and sensors were replaced, but the car has never run the same since. For the last six months, it still shakes when decelerating, and service cannot find the cause or reproduce the issue. Apple CarPlay shuts down after 20 minutes, dashboard settings and units change without touching it, and the screen goes blank. I cannot get anything done about it. In June, a crack formed in the center of the windshield. Safelight looked at it and said it was defective, and there was no sign of impact. The windshield could not be found, but my customer service rep found an OEM one for me and arranged for the dealer to replace it. She said it would be paid for by Genesis. After the windshield was changed, and I assume the old one was destroyed, they gave me a bill for $2900. Unfortunately, the windshield cracked again just 3 months later. In my 40 years of driving, I have never had a cracked windshield before. There are probably a few other things I am forgetting. I must say that the customer service for a vehicle that costs $100k is not up to par, and opening a case on their customer support line is not very helpful. They have no way of communicating except through the Genesis portal. I have asked to talk to a supervisor at least a dozen times, but unfortunately, nothing has been done yet!

  5. Oran Beatty 2024-10-28

    Vehicle year: 2020

I have experienced poor customer service, particularly from Lisa in the case department (case #16737287). In the past, I have had to change the front tires three times within 8000 miles, resulting in significant delays. Based on my experience, I would advise against purchasing this car. However, I regret my decision to buy it.

Latest positive Genesis G90 car reviews

  1. Bennett VonRueden 2025-04-21

    Vehicle year: 2021

I purchased a 2017 Genesis G90 5.0 AWD off the showroom floor in May 2017 and I absolutely loved that car! When I saw the 2020 refresh, I knew I had to have one. However, wanting one and getting one were two different things. First, they were sold in Korea and Canada long before I could even order one in the United States. Finally, in late January 2020, I was able to order one in Uyuni White with the Beige and Havana Interior. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and South Korea shut down the Genesis factory. I had actually given up hope of ever getting one, but low and behold, I finally got my car on May 20th. Even with the COVID scare, I went to the dealership and relinquished my 2017 for a brand new 2020 G90. The only thing that could get me out of the 2017 G90 5.0 AWD Ultimate was a 2020 G90 5.0 AWD Ultimate. It might be my imagination, but the 2020 seems to actually ride better than the 2017. Of course, a brand new car will probably always ride better than a three-year-old car, everything else being equal. Having said that, I loved the 2017 and I love the 2020 for all the same reasons - ultimate luxury, power, and coddling interior with lots of features. Really, this is a fantastic bargain for the price. Yes, $79,000 for a car can hardly be called a bargain unless you compare it to the German top-end cars that cost north of $100,000 (usually WAY north!). The 2017 was a fantastic car with no major problems (except for a mass airflow sensor) for 3 years and 32,000 miles, and I expect this one will be as trouble-free. If it isn't, they have a great warranty and free loaner cars along with concierge pick-up and drop-off. I have had a lot of nice cars in my 72 years, but the 2017 and now the 2020 rank right up there at the top, and I include a couple of Germans in my past. These are great cars at a great price that is not well advertised, and most people have no idea what a I've noticed that not many people seem to be familiar with the 2017 and 2020 models, as I've received a lot of blank stares when mentioning them. I understand that with many people staying home, there may be limited opportunities for questions. However, I believe that if the Genesis Division of Hyundai were to build stand-alone dealerships and increase their advertising efforts, they could potentially sell more vehicles. In the three years that I owned the 2017 model, I only saw two other G90's on the road or in parking lots. As for the 2020 model, I have only seen one, which is currently parked in my garage.

After almost 4 years of ownership, I have driven my car for less than 24 thousand miles, but I still believe it is an excellent value. I purchased a brand new 2019 Genesis Ultimate G-90 V-8 all-wheel-drive sedan in February 2020. Previously, I owned two new Lexus LS Sedans, but I find the G-90 to be just as good. I was disappointed with the new LS sedan from Lexus, which removed the V-8 and made the styling unappealing. In contrast, the G-90 Ultimate V-8 AWD is a handsome and capable machine with an excellent ride, outstanding road feel, and impressive fit and finish. It is also a great value compared to similar models from Mercedes and Lexus, and I believe it is even better than the Lexus. With a 124-inch wheelbase, the ride is limousine smooth with a competent suspension. On our Southern Virginia back roads, my wife complains that I drive it like my Corvette, because it takes the curves and hills and high crowned roads at high speed with ease. The eight-speed transmission is silky smooth, and the 5-liter 420 horsepower fuel-injected V-8 makes passing on 2-lane backcountry roads a breeze. The cars being passed must wonder what that blurry Bentley-like car was because it went by so fast, they had no clue as to its make. The interior is incredibly comfortable, and I can load up the trunk with many hundreds of pounds of cargo without affecting the engine, transmission, or suspension. This all-wheel-drive V-8 powered silky smooth machine is a great value at $50,000 less than a Benz S-class, just like the original Lexus LS sedans in the early and mid-2000s before Lexus ruined them and upped the price. I recommend snagging a low mileage V-8 one because the turbo V-6 engine they are putting in the new Genesis cars is not as good as the V-8.The all wheel drive works wonderfully in slippery conditions at low and high speed. These cars are a joy and a steal. Everywhere I go and park, I return to find someone gawking at the car and inevitably asking me what it is and how much I like it. This car is a keeper. Along with the Lexus LX 570, the V-8 G-90 AWD Ultimate is a road car with manners that handles road imperfections with aplomb and carves through sharp hilly curves as if it was a train on railroad tracks. It's comfortable, handles excellently, has smooth and powerful acceleration, and amazingly good gas mileage. The service has been great at my local dealer. If I didn’t already have a G-90 AWD V-8, I would go looking for a 2022 today. Everything I said in the original review still pertains. We have taken this car on many long road trips and it performs almost as well as my Corvette ragtop, yet the ride is so silky smooth and comfortable that my wife with a just replaced knee can ride home from the hospital in it comfortably in the back seat as if she was in a stretched limo. The right rear seat has a 22 position adjustment with heat and cooling. 2022 was the last year for the naturally aspirated 420 horsepower 5 liter V-8, so if you can snag a newer low mileage G-90 Ultimate AWD, hurry up before they are gone. The 2023 and later models are V-6 ONLY and the price tag has gone up by almost $30,000. HURRY UP before the 2022’s with the V-8 are gone! You will not regret it. UPDATE in November of 2023: still a great touring sedan with impeccable road manners and an athletic suspension with an agile and responsive drivetrain. If you can find a used G-90 Ultimate all wheel drive with the 5.0 420horsepower V-8, BUY IT. That wimpy V-6 with turbos is no match for this car.

Took delivery of a Genesis G90 in March and I am extremely pleased with it. The ride, handling, technology, materials, build quality, quietness and performance are all excellent. The twin turbo V6 is an absolute gem - even more responsive than the very good V8s in other Genesis and Equus cars I’ve owned. In the past, I have owned a wide range of cars, domestic and foreign, including luxury cars, sport sedans, muscle cars and sports cars. This is my 5th Hyundai-built car. It all started when Hertz gave me an XG350 during a business trip. The XG was then the top of the line and, although I'd never heard of it, I liked it and subsequently bought one. Later, I traded the XG on an Azera, traded the Azera on a Genesis 4.6 Ultimate, traded the 4.6 on an Equus Ultimate and traded it on the G90, so I know top-of-the-line Hyundais pretty well. Each new one has been a significant step up from its predecessor. However, all of them have been very well built using quality materials, performed well and were dead reliable. I have never had to have repair work of any kind on any Hyundai-built car I've owned. In my opinion, the G90 is close to the equal of a similarly equipped S-Class that costs $45,000 more. The G90 does not equal the Mercedes in prestige or status and probably never will. But it's a fine, world-class luxury car at an outstanding price. UPDATE: After driving the G90 for more than a year, I am even more pleased. I have had zero problems. When I occasionally drive another luxury car, I am reminded how much better the G90 is. I am now convinced it is at least the equal of an S Class. The main difference with the G90 is that there’s not as much risk of appearing pretentious - a definite plus for some people.

Been driving from luxury cars to Honda Civic for 40 years. This is merely the best car I've ever owned for this price. It makes me feel like I'm driving a spaceship!

I absolutely adore my 2020 Genesis G90! As a car enthusiast who has owned over 25 cars, including a Mercedes 600 sedan and multiple other Mercedes and Lexus models, I can confidently say that the Genesis is at the top of my list, if not number one. I opted for the V6 twin turbo as a family man who didn't want my kids to have all the controls in the backseat, and I'm still impressed with its quickness when needed while getting a nice 20 mpg and almost 500 miles per tank full. The interior is incredibly quiet and the sound system is delightful. The 2020 model is especially luxurious with Nappa leather and real wood throughout. I've even received compliments on my sporty rims from young men! Living in Colorado, I also appreciate the AWD. I feel truly blessed to have this car and plan on driving it to 100,000 miles to see its quality last. I give this vehicle 5 stars across the board!
