The third generation of the BMW 6 Series consists of the BMW F12 (two-door convertible version), BMW F13 (two-door coupé version) BMW F06 (four-door "Gran Coupé" version) executive-sized grand tourers. The F12/F13/F06 generation was produced from 2011 to 2018 and is often collectively referred to as the F12.
The F12 shares a platform and many features with the F10 5 Series and F01 7 Series, with the two-door F12/13 models having a shorter wheelbase than the F10, while the four-door F06's wheelbase matches the F10's.
The M6 versions are powered by the S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. It is the first M6 model to use a turbocharged engine.
Production of the F12 generation ended, first with the Coupé in February 2017, then the convertible in February 2018, and finally Gran Coupé models which were discontinued in September 2018. The successor to the F12, the BMW 8 Series (G15), began production in June 2018. The 6 Series nameplate was re-used for the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32) which is still executive-sized being based upon the contemporary 5 Series (G30) and has features of a four-door coupé like frameless doors and sloping rear roofline; however unlike the F06 Gran Coupé which is a sedan the G32 Gran Turismo is a 5-door liftback succeeding the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07).

The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was not equipped with the reverse camera and that there was an additional cost to install the Back Over Prevention system. The contact stated that the Federal Law stated that vehicles manufactured after May 2018 needed the Back Over Prevention camera to be installed as standard equipment. The contact was concerned that the vehicle was not safe to drive or to be resold without the Back Over Prevention camera installed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was 36,423.

- Summary: ON 9/27/19 I LEFT THE GAS STATION WITH FULL TANK OF GAS AND STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT ON A BUSY ROAD IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THE LIGHT CHANGED GREEN MY VEHICLE SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT RESTART CREATING A SAFETY HAZARD. I PUT THE GEAR IN NEUTRAL AND PUSHED OUT OF THE ROAD. A LIGHT CAME ON "AUTO START/STOP DISENGAGED." EVERYTHING ELSE POWERED (WINDOWS, RADIO, REAR SHADES, SCREEN, PHONE AND NAVIGATION, ETC.) AND WORKED SO THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY. THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED 1 HOUR LATER, THE CAR WOULDN'T START, LOCKED UP COMPLETELY AND THE GEAR WOULDN'T SHIFT. THE DEALERSHIP HAD MY CAR FROM 9/27-10/10/19. DIAGNOSED CAUSE: BATTERY OLD/WORN, REAR BRAKES AND OIL LEAKING. THE CAR WAS SERVICED. ON 10/13/19 THREE DAYS LATER MY CAR CUT OFF AGAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AFTER BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, LOCKED UP IMMEDIATELY AND WOULD NOT START JUST AS BEFORE. THIS TIME THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND COULD NOT BE PUSHED OUT OF THE ROAD. I BLOCKED TRAFFIC AND HAD TO WAIT ONE HOUR AGAIN FOR ANOTHER TOW TRUCK TO TOW MY VEHICLE BACK TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP. JUST LIKE BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE WORKED (A/C, WINDOWS, LIGHTS, RADIO, BLINKERS, POWER SEATS, DISPLAY PANEL, ETC.), SO ONCE AGAIN IT WAS NOT THE BATTERY. AGAIN A SAFETY HAZARD WAS CREATED WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC TRYING TO AVOID HITTING ME. IT WAS DARK, I WAS ALONE AND STOOD OUTSIDE THE CAR TO WAVE VEHICLES TO GO AROUND PUTTING MY PERSONAL SAFETY IN JEOPARDY. ON 10/22/19 I HAD TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP AND ASK FOR AN UPDATE ON MY CAR BECAUSE I RECEIVED NO COMMUNICATION AT ALL. THE DIAGNOSED CAUSE: FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT AND THE FUEL PUMP CONTROL UNIT: EKPS FAILED BY EXCESSIVE AMPERAGE DRAW FROM THE FAILED FUEL PUMP. SAME PROBLEM, BUT TO REPAIR THIS TIME THE COST IS OVER $1500.

THE CONTACT RESEARCHED THE FAILURE AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS AN INTAKE FUEL FAILURE CAUSED BY UNDER VOLTAGE AND THE FUEL PUMP CONTROL UNIT FAILED FROM INSUFFICIENT AMP ELECTRICAL POWER. THE CONTACT CALLED THE SAME DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL COVERAGE; THEREFORE, THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY OVER $3,600 FOR THE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,519.

MY VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 25,000 MILES ON IT AND IT HAS A CRACKED WHEEL WITH NO REASON. THIS IS A CLEAR SAFETY CONCERN AS A RAPID LOSS OF AIR IN A WHEEL MAY CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL. - Summary: AFTER WORK (~ 5:30 PM, PST) WHILE DRIVING, I FLIPPED MY SUN VISOR TO PROTECT MYSELF FROM THE SUN. AS THE VISOR WAS BEING FLIPPED, THE VISOR FELL OUT OF ITS HINGE AND LOST ALL VISIBILITY. LOST ALL VISIBILITY. PANICKED AND SLAMMED ON THE BREAKS. ALMOST REAR ENDED AS I COULD HEAR THE CAR SLAMMING ON THE BREAKS. IF THIS HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY, THIS COULD'VE BEEN A MAJOR ISSUE. THE VISOR WAS PROPPED BACK INTO ITS SPACE BUT POPS OUT VERY EASILY. THERE SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW WITH THE WAY THE VISOR IS BEING SECURED IN THE HINGE. I AM WORRIED THAT ALL BMW SHARING IN THIS DESIGN MAY POTENTIALLY EXPERIENCE THIS ISSUE WHILE DRIVING. I CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE PRETTY NIMBLE AND REACTIVE. I'M GENUINELY WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OTHER DRIVES WITH THIS ISSUE.

- Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the back-up camera software, free of charge. The recall began November 8, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls-Royce at 1-877-877-3735. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.

- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 540d, 2018-2020 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive, M5, 530e, 530e xDrive, X3 sDrive, X3 xDrive, X3 M40i, X3 M, and 2019-2020 X4 xDrive, X4 M40i, X4 M, X7 xDrive, X7 M50i, 740Li, 740Li xDrive, 750Li, 750Li xDrive, 8 Series Convertible and Coupe 840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, X5 sDrive, X5 xDrive, X5 M50i, X6 xDrive, X6 M50i, 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, M340i xDrive, Z4 sDrive, Z4 M40i, 740Le xDrive and 745Le xDrive, 2018-2019 640i xDrive Gran Turismo and Rolls-Royce Phantom, 2019 M850i xDrive Gran Coupe and Rolls-Royce Cullinan and 2020 Toyota Supra vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
- Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the back-up camera software, free of charge. The recall began November 8, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls-Royce at 1-877-877-3735. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.

- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 BMW 540d xDrive vehicles. The crankshaft sensor may be equipped with incorrect firmware, preventing the sensor from properly processing input from the crankshaft reluctor ring, possibly resulting in a vehicle stall. On September 12, 2018, BMW expanded the recall to a total of 5,309 vehicles including certain 2018-2019 BMW 540d xDrive, 230i M240i, M240i xDrive, X2 sDrive28i, X2 xDrive28i, X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 330i, 330i xDrive, 340i, 340i xDrive, 330i xDrive Gran Turismo, 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, 530e, 530e xDrive, 640i xDrive Gran Turismo, 330e, 2019 430i Gran Coupe, 430i xDrive Gran Coupe, 440i Gran Coupe, 440i xDrive Gran Coupe, 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, 740i, 740i xDrive, MINI Cooper, Cooper S, JCW, MINI Countryman (Cooper, Cooper All4, Cooper S, Cooper S All4, JCW All4), and MINI Clubman (Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper All4, Cooper S All4, JCW All4) vehicles.
