The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series consists of the BMW F10 (sedan version), F18 (long-wheelbase sedan), BMW F11 (wagon, marketed as Touring) and BMW F07 (fastback/hatchback, marketed as Gran Turismo) executive cars and were produced by BMW from January 2010 (for the 2011 model year) to 2017, with F10 being launched on 20 March 2010 to domestic market and F11 in the summer of 2010. The F07 Gran Turismo was produced from early September 2009 to 2017, being launched in the domestic German market in late October 2009.

The F10 5 Series shares a platform with the F01 7 Series full-size luxury sedan and the F12 6 Series executive-sized grand tourers. The F10 generation is the first 5 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain, a turbocharged V8 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, a dual-clutch transmission (in the M5), active rear-wheel steering (called "Integral Active Steering"), electric power steering, double-wishbone front suspension, an LCD instrument cluster (called "Black Panel Display") and automatic parking (called "Parking Assistant"). A long-wheelbase sedan version (model code F18) was sold in China, Mexico, Turkey and the Middle East. Introduced in 2011, the M5 model is powered by the BMW S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The Gran Turismo (F07) is the first and only 5 Series to be produced in a fastback body style with a hatchback truck opening.

In February 2017, the G30 5 Series was released as the successor to the F10. G32 6 Series Gran Turismo (based on the G30 platform) succeeded the F07.

Common Bmw 535d problems

The BMW 535d is a diesel-powered sedan that has gained popularity among drivers who prefer the driving dynamics of diesel engines. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues with the BMW 535d:

  • Vacuum Hoses on the Turbos Perishing: Another common problem with the BMW 535d is the perishing of vacuum hoses on the turbos. These hoses are crucial for the proper functioning of the sequential turbo system, and their failure can result in a loss of boost, which can significantly impact the vehicle's performance. Regular inspections and timely replacements of these hoses can help avoid this issue.
  • Gearbox Slamming: Some BMW 535d owners have reported issues with the gearbox slamming during shifts. This problem can be caused by various factors, including worn-out clutch components, faulty transmission control modules, or issues with the vehicle's software. In some cases, a simple software update or replacement of the affected components can resolve this issue.
  • Water Ingress: The BMW 535d, especially the touring models, is prone to water ingress, which can cause various electrical and mechanical issues. Water can enter the vehicle through the panoramic roof, rear window micro switch, wiring near the hinge, or the rear spoiler aerial. Regular inspections and maintenance of these components can help prevent water ingress and the resulting problems.
  • Cam Chain Stretching and Failure: Some BMW 535d owners have reported issues with cam chain stretching and failure. This problem can occur due to various factors, including poor maintenance, high mileage, or manufacturing defects. Regular inspections and timely replacement of the cam chain and tensioners can help avoid this issue.
  • Bearing Failure and Engine Replacement or Rebuild: Some BMW 535d owners have reported bearing failure, which can result in the need for engine replacement or rebuild. This issue can be caused by various factors, including poor maintenance, high mileage, or manufacturing defects. Regular inspections and timely replacement of the affected components can help avoid this issue.

In summary, the BMW 535d is a powerful and capable diesel sedan that offers excellent performance and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners should be aware of. Regular inspections, timely maintenance, and prompt replacement of the affected components can help avoid these issues and ensure the vehicle's longevity and reliability.

Bmw 535d

Is the BMW 535d engine reliable?

In the past diesel engines were a toss up. They've always been workhorses that can last forever, but the maintenance costs were high. One of the benefits of today's well-made diesel engines is fewer maintenance needs. And the BMW 535d is one of the most well-built engines on the road.

How good is the BMW 535d?

And crucially, the 535d has the extra fraction of driver engagement it needs to stand out. What really sets its apart is the sensational performance. The 5 Series was fastest in all of our acceleration tests, helped in no small part by its eight-speed transmission.

Is the BMW 535d fast?

At our test track, both cars ran an identical 5.5 seconds from 0-60 mph. The gas-powered 535i edged out the 535d in the quarter-mile running a 14-second flat compared to the 14.2 seconds. Trap speed was to the gasser also at 99.3 compared to 97.1 mph.

Is the BMW 535d twin turbo?

As with many BMWs, it's the 535d's remarkable engine that's the star of the show. The twin-turbo unit serves up scintillating pace and remarkable economy, while the smooth auto box is one of the best around. The adaptive dampers and four-wheel steering are costly options, yet deliver much sharper driving dynamics.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-21
  • Date Complaint: 2023-10-02
  • VIN: WBAFV3C59ED
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: In July 2023, on the interstate in Des Moines during rush hour traffic, the car suddenly lurched once and abruptly stalled. We were in the passing lane with no chance to cross 3 lanes of traffic, so I coasted onto the left shoulder. We were towed to the BMW dealership where we were eventually informed of a “catastrophic” failure of the fuel system requiring complete replacement. This was not an ordinary fuel pump failure. There were no warning messages prior to the stall and when it did stall we were not warned to pull over safely in “limp mode”. Had we been in either of the center two lanes when it happened, we could have created a multi-car accident— which easily could have resulted in injuries or deaths. After several conversations with BMW of North America Customer Relations, I learned that some cars of this year, make and model have been recalled and others were issued an extended warranty (10 years or 120,000 mile— we were at 9 years and 125,000 miles). Despite my complaint and concern for the risks involved, BMW has chosen to do nothing further. By internet review, this fuel pump— the Bosch CP4— is a known problem in the United States.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-18
  • Date Complaint: 2023-09-25
  • VIN: WBAFV3C55ED
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: BOSCH CP4 HPFP failed and released metal shavings throughout all fuel lines, injectors and gas tank. BMW had a recall for 12K vehicles but mine was not on the recall list and BMW cannot explain why given that my fuel pump exploded like so many other BOSCH CP4 pumps. I am not in at least 7K in repairs to replace all the fuel lines, pumps and injectors that the faulty part ruined. I believe BMW knew that these pumps were bad and did not notify all owners that had them in the car. My year, make, model and build date all fit into the recall notice but i was not included. BMW cannot explain why and will not agree to pay for the repair bills.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-24
  • Date Complaint: 2023-04-26
  • VIN: WBAFV3C51ED
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: On/around 4/24/2023, I was driving home at approximately 35mph when I heard a loud noise under the car as if I had run over something. I was able to safely pull into a parking lot and immediately shut off the engine. The vehicle was hard to steer but I managed to do it. There were no warning lamps or messages and the control center said "all systems are okay" I looked under the car and saw a significant amount of oil coming from underneath the car. I opened the hood and saw significant oil on the lower engine. I called AAA and had the vehicle towed to my local BMW dealership where I had worked done recently around 11/2022. My service advisor was able to check the car in and told me he would give me an update the next day. I received an inspection video on 4/25/2023 in which the service technician stated that the car experienced a catastrophic failure: the driveshaft broke and knocked a hole in the oil pan and broke a few other things. The technician is recommending replacing the driveshaft and the engine assembly. The technician stated that there could be other repairs involved. To date, I'm still awaiting to hear back from the service advisor for the cost of repairs. This was a very scary incident and could have been fatal if I was driving on the highway at a higher rate of speed. In fact, it could have been fatal on the road I was traveling on because it was during rush hour traffic. I was extremely lucky to have been able to pull over to safety. I did some research and found that BMW did some recalls regarding the drive shaft failures on certain Xdrive vehicles but mine was not part of those recalls. I have well maintained the vehicle and this should not have occurred. Anything that you can do to assist would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
