The Kia Sephia is a compact car that was manufactured by the South Korean automaker Kia Motors from September 1992 to 2003.
The first generation Sephia was badged Kia Mentor in some markets, and as the Timor S515/S516 in Indonesia. This convention continued on with the second generation version, which was also badged Kia Shuma and Kia Spectra.
First generation (1992)
The first-generation Kia Sephia is the first car that was actually designed by Kia with their own chassis. Engines available were the B-series engines, with the 1.5-liter rated at 59 kilowatts (79 hp), the 1.6-liter 78-kilowatt (105 hp), and the 1.8-liter BP engine at 91-kilowatt (122 hp) from 1994. The car was presented in September 1992 to replace the aging Capital, which was rapidly losing market share. The Sephia proved quite successful, selling over 100,000 in its first full year in the home market (1993). A total of 472,920 Sephias were sold over the life of the original Sephia.
In the United States, sales began in late 1993 for the 1994 model year. This was the first Kia to be exported to the US. An update came in the 1995 model year when grille and tail lights were restyled and all US-market Sephias except California-market RS/LS models got upgraded to the new 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder BP engine as used in the Mazda Familia (BG). Kia licensed the engine design from Mazda, but manufactured it themselves.
It was launched in Europe in the spring of 1994 as the Kia Sephia in some markets and in others, including the United Kingdom, as the Kia Mentor. It was similar in size to best-selling European small family cars like the Ford Escort, but was priced similarly to smaller cars like the Ford Fiesta. Its key rivals in Europe were budget-priced Eastern European and Far Eastern imported products including the Daewoo Nexia, Hyundai Accent, Proton Persona and Skoda Felicia. In Brazil, the car went on the market in March 1994. It was only offered with the 1.5-liter twin cam engine with 112 PS (82 kW) and was considered a competitor to the domestically built Chevrolet Omega and Volkswagen Santana. To make a car suitable for the Brazilian market, Kia went through the trouble of studying Brazilian road surfacing and importing 1,000 litres (260 US gal) of Brazilian gasoline to properly program the engine management.
Kia presented a conceptual convertible version of the first generation Sephia, which was named "Kia Sephia Cabrio" at some auto shows.

I have to say, I was a bit skeptical when I saw the price. However, I got my 2001 Sephia for $9250.00, which included tax, title and license. I wanted a car to commute to work with that wouldn't break the bank, and I paid cash. I have never been happier with my purchase, as I have had no problems whatsoever with mine. I truly believe that Kia and Hyundai are now positioned in the same manner that the Japanese were in the late 70's and early 80's, offering quality cars for a great price, which equals loyal owners and repeat buyers. Therefore, I highly recommend this model.

I had very few expectations of this car, but it has really grown on me. It's excellent in every way. Reliable, fun to drive, and very zippy (except when driving over 80 mph. It gets a little scary at that point, but what do you want for the money?). I would definitely buy a Kia again. But, this car has over 85000K miles on it and shows no signs of stopping, so I'll keep it until the wheels fall off!

This car is an excellent choice for a late 1990's model. It received great reviews in 1996 (I found them online). The vehicle is well-built and repairs are inexpensive (in Korea). I purchased it for only $320 and it has been driven 25,000km over the past 1.5 hours without any breakdowns. The quality build has been tested on rough Korean roads, intercity and highway driving. Although there are some weaknesses such as a curling dashboard, radio electronic problems, and replaced drive shaft, ball joints, front brakes, master clutch cylinder, and 1 front strut, it is still a very dependable car. Additionally, I was able to get 4 new recycled tires for only $80! If mechanically maintained, this car is a great way to save money. Thank you!

However, after fixing parts and maintaining it properly, it ran great! Although parts were difficult to find, I did my research and found out that it shares the same engine as the Miata MX5 and the Mazda Protege. For how old the engine is, it's maintaining a decent mpg of 22 mixed. Now, for the safety part, I ended up going into a wall at around 70mph front first after another driver ran me off the road. With the airbags being nearly 20 years old, I was worried, but they still deployed and did me no harm. My front bumper was smashed up to my wheels, but I was able to walk away with only a bruised hip. I owe my car so much gratitude that my family can have me this Christmas!

Congratulations on your first car! It sounds like you made a great choice. I can feel your excitement every time you turn the key and that's wonderful. It's great to hear that your car is peppy, responsive, reliable and fuel efficient. I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any major problems with it, despite hearing horror stories about sephias. It's impressive that it survived a 16 year old learning to drive stick! I understand that there are a few things that could be improved, such as the easily dented body panels, terrible cup holders, cheap tires, and engine noise on the highway. However, it's great to hear that overall you're happy with your car and it's still going strong. Keep on grinning and enjoying your ride!

In January 1999, I purchased a used 1994 Kia Sephia RS from a single owner with 89,000 miles on it. Since then, I have taken good care of it by having the brakes done, regular oil changes & tune ups, and a new battery. I have also done some minor tweaking of the timing & general maintenance (headlights etc). The best part is that I have had NO PROBLEMS with it. It always starts & gets great gas mileage. In my opinion, this is the best car for its value that I have ever had.

I had to replace the engine once and it may need to be changed again. I'm not a big fan of this car, to be honest. I wouldn't recommend it. It might be better to spend a little extra money on a Toyota Corolla or Camry.

I purchased a 1999 Kia in 1999. Despite the issues I have faced with it, I believe that the safety features of the car could be improved. For instance, during a crash at 50mph, the airbags did not deploy. However, I am confident that Kia has since made significant improvements to their vehicles and I look forward to seeing their continued progress.

Although there have been some issues with our Kia, we have taken care of them promptly and efficiently. We have had to replace the transmission and repair an oil leak, but we have taken care of these issues and have not had any further problems. We have also had some repairs on the radiator, but we have addressed these issues as well. While we have experienced some difficulties, we have taken care of them and have not had any major issues since. We understand that every car has its own unique issues, but we are confident in our ability to handle any problems that may arise. We appreciate the opportunity to own a Kia and would consider purchasing one again in the future.
