Infiniti Q40 problems

The Infiniti G Line is a series of compact executive cars manufactured and marketed by Infiniti, a luxury division of Nissan, for the 1991–1996 and 1999–2016 model years — across four generations.

The first two generations of the Infiniti G (P10 and P11) were sedans based on the Nissan Primera. Beginning with its third generation (V35), the Infiniti G have been rebadged versions of the Nissan Skyline line of sedans and coupes that were exported to the United States and Canada. The fourth generation (V36) introduced the hardtop coupe convertible. The Nissan FM platform, used with the third and fourth generations (V35 and V36) of the Infiniti G, also underpins the Nissan 370Z and has shared components with the Infiniti M, Infiniti EX, and Infiniti FX.

Infiniti established a new naming convention beginning with the 2014 model year; all passenger cars are designated by the letter "Q," while sport-utility model names begin with "QX." The Infiniti G was to have been replaced by the Infiniti Q50, but the G37 was revived as the Q40 beginning with the 2015 model year.

Common Infiniti Q40 problems

The Infiniti Q40 is a luxury sedan that has been praised for its innovation and dependability. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain issues that have been reported by owners. Here are some of the most common problems with the Infiniti Q40, based on complaints from owners:

  1. Malfunctioning of the VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control): The VDC system is designed to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle during sudden maneuvers or in slippery conditions. However, some Infiniti Q40 owners have reported that the VDC system can malfunction, causing the vehicle to behave unpredictably. This issue can be particularly dangerous if it occurs while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.
  2. Issues with the vehicle rolling away: Some Infiniti Q40 owners have reported that their vehicles have rolled away unexpectedly, even when the parking brake was engaged. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including problems with the transmission or the parking brake system. In some cases, it may be necessary to replace certain components to correct the problem.
  3. Faults in the transmission unit: Transmission problems are a common issue in many vehicles, and the Infiniti Q40 is no exception. Some owners have reported that their vehicles have experienced transmission failure, shuddering, or other issues that can affect the vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or manufacturing defects.
  4. Excessive noise: Some Infiniti Q40 owners have reported that their vehicles produce excessive noise, particularly when accelerating or driving at high speeds. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including problems with the exhaust system, suspension, or drivetrain. In some cases, it may be necessary to replace certain components to correct the problem.

It is worth noting that these issues are not necessarily exclusive to the Infiniti Q40, and they may be more prevalent in certain model years than others. Additionally, the severity and frequency of these issues can vary widely from one vehicle to another. If you are considering purchasing an Infiniti Q40, it is important to do your research and carefully evaluate the vehicle's history and maintenance records to ensure that you are making an informed decision.

  • Summary: I BOUGHT THIS NEW 2015 INFINITI Q40 AWD FROM INFINITI DEALER ON FEB 28, 2015. AFTER DRIVING THIS NOISY CAR FOR THREE MONTHS(3000MILES), I STARTED HAVING RINGING IN BOTH EARS (TINNITUS). I HAVE TROUBLE TO SLEEP AND START LOSING MY HEARING IN BOTH EARS. I HAVE CONTACTED THE INFINITI DEALER IN JUNE 2015, THE FIRST TIME I NOTICED THE TINNITUS CAUSED BY THE LOW FREQUENCY NOISE( RANGE FROM 100-400HZ ACCORDING TO THE ANALYSIS FROM ADOBE AUDITION CC SOFTWARE). THE NOISE BECAME NOTICEABLE WHEN REACH 35 MPH ON BOTH LOCAL AND HIGHWAY ROAD. THEY REFUSED TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM AND CLAIMED THAT IT'S NORMAL CAR NOISE. I TOOK MY DOCTOR'S SUGGESTION TO WEAR EARPLUGS WHEN DRIVING THIS Q40 SINCE THEN. AFTER ANOTHER 6 MONTHS OF DRIVING (TOTAL MILEAGE IS 11,000MILES NOW), THE TINNITUS AND MY HEARING DIDN'T GET BETTER. I CONTACTED THE CAR MAKER AGAIN IN DEC 2015. AFTER A SECOND ROAD TEST, INFINITI STILL CLAIMS IT'S THE NORMAL NOISE. THEY REFUSED TO GIVE ME FULL REFUND WITH THE COMPENSATION TO THE HEALTH DAMAGE ON ME. WITH NO CONCERN ON THE FACT THAT THIS NOISE ALREADY CAUSED SEVERE AND PERMANENT HEALTH DAMAGE TO THE CUSTOMER, INFINITI REFUSED TO RECALL THE CARS AND INVESTIGATE THE POTENTIAL HARM OF THE LOW FREQUENCY NOISE TO THE CUSTOMERS. 8574 OF INFINITI Q40 WERE SOLD IN U.S. SINCE JAN 2015 ( INFINITI SALES STATS: HTTP://WWW.GOODCARBADCAR.NET/2011/01/INFINITI-G-SALES-FIGURES.HTML). ALL THESE CUSTOMERS MAY SUFFER FROM THE SAME NOISE. SOME OF THEM MAY HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS RIDING WITH THEM, INCLUDING CHILDREN. THE PUBLIC SHOULD BE ALERTED THAT THERE IS POTENTIAL RISK TO DRIVE THIS CAR, FOR BOTH THE CURRENT Q40 OWNERS AND THE POTENTIAL BUYERS.

I TOOK CAR TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF TWO INDEPENDENT DEALERSHIPS 4 MONTHS APART..THEY BOTH KEPT IT OVERNIGHT, TESTED IT "THOROUGHLY." THEIR RESPECTIVE SERVICE MANAGERS SAID THAT THE AIR BAG MET ALL SPECIFICATIONS AND THAT THEY "CANNOT ADJUST SINCE IT IS SET AT THE FACTORY" I WAS REFERRED TO INFINITI REGIONAL OFFICE AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVE SAID THE SAME THING, BUT HE ADDED THAT GIVEN HER WEIGHT IF THE AIR BAG DID DEPLOY IT WOULD "BE LIKE A LETHAL WEAPON." I have owned my 2015 Q40 for almost 2 years now. While it has a good amount of power and is quick, I have been disappointed with my purchase. Despite being touted as a luxury vehicle, the interior is cheap with plastic everywhere and everything squeaks and seems to be falling apart. The technology in the car is outdated and the gas mileage is abysmal. I do about a 50/50 mix of highway/city and I have never exceeded 15.5MPG. However, I believe that Infiniti can improve their dealer network and support from Infiniti USA. If you are looking for a true luxury vehicle and experience, there are other luxury brands that may offer a better product for a better price.

I purchased my 2015 Infiniti Q40 AWD from Beshoff Infiniti (San Jose) on Feb 28, 2015. After driving the car for three months, or about 3000 miles, I began experiencing ringing in both ears (tinnitus). The ringing became more and more noticeable after driving the Q40, and it has been affecting my sleep. I have also noticed a loss of hearing in both ears, especially for low voices in group meetings or in noisy environments, or when speaking with someone who has a bass voice on the phone. I contacted Beshoff Infiniti in June 2015 when I first noticed the tinnitus caused by the noise. Although they refused to take the car back with a full refund, they did offer some suggestions. I took my doctor's advice and started wearing earplugs when driving the Q40. After another 6 months of driving (total mileage is now 10,000 miles), the tinnitus and my hearing did not improve, and it has been affecting my life and work. I contacted the dealer and the car maker again this month, but they asked me to do a second road test and still claimed that it's normal road noise. However, this noise is causing me a lot of discomfort and I don't think I can continue driving this car. Despite the dealer and Infiniti refusing to help me with the problem, I did some noise tests and analysis myself to figure out what's going on. According to the results from Adobe Audition CC, a professional audio analysis software, the noise mainly comes from 100-400 Hz, which is low frequency noise not sensitive to human beings. This means that even if the driver doesn't hear the noise, the energy carried by these sounds can still damage the auditory nerve cells without immediate impact. The low frequency noise of this Q40 AWD carries much higher energy than another model made by Infiniti, the Q50, at this range. This indicates that the company has the technology and capability to reduce the noise, but they did not apply it to Q40 for some reason. I am currently negotiating with the Infiniti regional affairs manager. Infiniti claims that it's normal noise and, as it's not a defect on any part of the vehicle, they cannot repair it or give a full refund as I requested, nor can they compensate me for the health damage caused. Despite the fact that this noise has already caused severe and permanent health damage to the customer, Infiniti refuses to recall the cars and investigate the potential harm of the noise to the customers. It can be difficult for individuals to negotiate and reach a desired outcome with a large company. So far, a total of 8574 Infiniti Q40s have been sold in the US since January 2015 (Infiniti sales stats: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01/infiniti-g-sales-figures.html, sales dropped from 1000 to 38 by November 2015). All these customers may suffer from the same noise. Some of them may have family members riding with them, including children. As a Ph.D. in Biology, I am aware that the auditory nerve cells are the only type of cell that cannot regenerate in the human body. Once you lose your hearing, it's lost permanently. The public should be alerted that there is potential risk in driving this car, for both current Q40 owners and potential buyers. If you are a current owner of this model of Infiniti Q40 and have the same problem, please contact Infiniti regional affairs. You sold it to Carmax for 12k. It's lowered on swift springs and has 5% tint on the doors and 35% on the front. It also has a Tomei exhaust with a YSR Y pipe. It's a shame that someone put a dent on the roof during the transition. It's too bad that you don't have your stock exhaust anymore. I know you miss that Tomei!

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some feedback on the car. While I think it's a decent car, I believe there is room for improvement in terms of the instruments on the inside. It could be much better. Additionally, I found it to be quite expensive. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
