Hyundai Kona n problems
The Hyundai Kona (Korean: 현대 코나) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The first-generation Kona debuted in June 2017 and the production version was revealed later that year. It is positioned between the Venue or Bayon and the Tucson in Hyundai crossover SUV line-up. The battery electric version called the Kona Electric (or Kona EV) was first launched in South Korea during the first half of 2018 and rolled out gradually worldwide afterwards.
Naming
The Kona is named after the western district of the island of Hawaiʻi. The company stated the name "reflects the lifestyle of modern customers", in line with its "progressive design" that it adopts. The Kona naming also continues Hyundai's tradition of naming crossover SUV models after famous travel destinations, including the Creta, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz.
The vehicle is marketed in Portugal as the Hyundai Kauai, as Kona is too similar to cona, a slang word for the female genitalia in European Portuguese. It's also sold in Iceland where the word kona means woman in Icelandic. Like Kona, Kauai is a place in Hawaii. It is also Hawaiian for lady.
In China, the vehicle was sold as the Hyundai Encino.

Common Hyundai Kona n problems
The Hyundai Kona N is a high-performance compact SUV that offers thrilling driving dynamics and a host of features. However, like any vehicle, it's not without its issues. Here are some of the most common problems reported by Kona N owners:
- ELSD (Electronic Limited Slip Differential) problems: A number of Kona N owners have reported issues with the vehicle's ELSD, which can cause a clunking noise in the steering on full lock. This issue has been traced back to a faulty brake switch in some cases, but in others, it has been found to be a more serious problem with the ELSD itself. This issue is covered under warranty, but it can be a frustrating and time-consuming problem to diagnose and fix.
- DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) recall: In 2022, there was a recall of certain Kona N models due to a problem with the DCT. This issue has been addressed by Hyundai, but it's worth being aware of if you're considering purchasing a used Kona N from this period.
It's worth noting that the Kona N is a high-performance vehicle, and as such, it's likely to have a higher incidence of issues than a more mainstream model. However, Hyundai has a strong reputation for reliability, and the Kona N is backed by a comprehensive warranty. If you're considering purchasing a Kona N, it's worth doing your research and being aware of the potential issues, but it's also worth remembering that many owners have had positive experiences with the vehicle.
Is the Hyundai Kona a reliable car?
The 2024 Hyundai Kona has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
Are there any problems with Hyundai Kona?
According to the recall campaign reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defective Konas carry a risk of stalling and, in some cases, spontaneous fires. The 2021 recall follows several prior recalls addressing other issues in certain Kona model vehicles.
Does the Hyundai Kona have transmission problems?
If you don't routinely and regularly change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your 2023 Hyundai Kona transmission will quickly slip.
How rare is the KONA N?
“Globally, Hyundai reported 5375 Kona Ns as sold over the first 10 months of 2022, or 3 per cent of all Kona sales. But in Europe, the N accounted for only 2 per cent of Kona sales (1420 out of 69,533) – each car sold polluting twice as much as a regular Kona Hybrid.” I'm not proud of that fact, but also...

- Date Complaint: 2024-03-10
- VIN: KM8KH3AC7PU

Hyundai Kona n 2023
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-03-09
- VIN: KM8KH3AC3PU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: After washing my '23 Kona N in a hand car wash, I experienced a sudden, complete loss of power as I was pulling into traffic immediately afterwards, nearly resulting in a rear-end collision. There was a flashing check engine light (CEL or MIL) on the dash, and I had to have the vehicle towed to a dealership. The stored OBD-II code is P132600 (knock sensor). The car has only 16k miles on it. This is a KNOWN ISSUE, and there are complaints about it all over Reddit, Facebook, and other Internet sites, and it also affects the same generation Elantra N. This issue can occur ANY TIME THE VEHICLE GETS WET. It is unacceptable that simply washing my car or driving my vehicle in the rain can cause me to lose all power and create an unsafe driving condition. PLEASE compel Hyundai to address this safety issue with a recall.
