The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common 2001 Gmc Sonoma problems

The GMC Sonoma, a compact pickup truck produced by General Motors, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. While the 2001 model year does not appear to be the worst in terms of overall complaints, it does have its share of issues that owners have reported.

One of the most common problems with the 2001 GMC Sonoma is related to starting issues. Some owners have reported that the truck exhibits problems starting, with no sounds or clicking when the key is turned to the start position. This issue is inconsistent and may be related to the change in weather, as some owners have noticed it more frequently during colder months. The problem might be caused by a bad ignition switch or a neutral safety switch. Before replacing the ignition switch, it is suggested to check for power getting to it while the trouble is happening and to check the output side of the switch as well.

Another issue reported by 2001 GMC Sonoma owners is related to the fuel system. Some owners have reported that the fuel gauge stops working, which can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous if the driver is unaware of the remaining fuel level. This problem has been reported in the 2000 model year as well, indicating that it may be a recurring issue in the Sonoma lineup.

The 2001 GMC Sonoma has also been reported to have issues with the electrical system, including problems with the alternator. Some owners have reported that the alternator fails, which can lead to a variety of issues, including difficulty starting the vehicle, dimming headlights, and other electrical problems. This issue has been reported in the 2002 model year as well, indicating that it may be a recurring problem in the Sonoma lineup.

In addition to these issues, the 2001 GMC Sonoma has also been reported to have problems with the interior, including broken door latches and door handles. These issues can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous, as they can affect the driver's ability to enter and exit the vehicle safely.

It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners of the 2001 GMC Sonoma and may not be representative of all vehicles in this model year. However, these issues do highlight some of the common problems that owners have reported, and potential buyers should be aware of them when considering a used 2001 GMC Sonoma.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-10-08
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: MY TRUCK RADIATOR STARTED TO SMELL AS IF IT HAD A LEAK. I TOOK IT TO A RADIATOR SHOP. THIS SHOP HAPPENS TO BE VERY CLOSE TO THE GM PLANT IN DAYTON, OHIO. THE MAN TOOK ONE LOOK AT THE TRUCK. HE EXPLAINED TO ME THAT ALL THE RADIATORS FOR THIS TRUCK FROM THE 2001 YEARS WERE SENT TO HIM PRIOR TO INSTALLING. HE SAID THEY HAD BEEN LEFT OUTSIDE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND ALL OF THEM HAD TO BE CLEANED OUT BECAUSE OF HEAVY RUST. HE STATED MINE MUST OF BEEN MISSED. THE RUST IN THE RADIATOR WAS SO THICK IT WAS LIKE MUD! HE REPLACED THE RADIATOR, HOSES AND EVEN HAD TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR FLUID RESERVOIR BECAUSE IT LITERALLY HAD INCHES OF RUST IN IT. THIS IS SOMETHING THE COMPANY KNEW ABOUT AND I SHOULD NOT OF HAD TO REPLACE IT. THE NEXT THING TO HAPPEN IS TO THE DRIVE TRAIN. THE TRUCK IS MAKING A WHINING NOISE - SOUNDS LIKE SOME TIRES DO. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO SEVERAL PLACES TO REPAIR AND NO ONE CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT IS CAUSING THE SOUND. WE HAVE REPLACED SO MANY PARTS, MANY OF THEM MORE THAN ONCE IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. I HAVE PUT OVER $3000 OF WORK IN THE TRUCK JUST OVER THE LAST MONTH AND AM NOT YET FINISHED. THE BRACKETS HOLDING THE REAR SUSPENSION IN PLACE ARE CRUMBLING IN MY HAND. THE MUFFLER IS LEAKING. IT IS STALLING FOR NO APPARENT REASON. AND IS IDLING VERY FAST EVEN THO IT HAS HAD REGULAR TUNE UPS AND MAINTENANCE. THE TAILGATE IS BROKEN - YOU CAN JUST PULL IT OFF THE TRUCK. THIS IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE WHINING CONTINUES WHENEVER IT IS BEING DRIVEN. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO COMPANIES BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THE QUALITY OF THE VEHICLE! GOD KNOWS MOST OF US CANT BUY A NEW ONE AT $35,000+ TO. *TR

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-09-27
  • VIN: 1GTDT13W21K
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: ON 9/27/2006 AROUND 8:45 PM (DARK) JUST NORTH OF PAYSON, AZ ON AZ HWY 260, I STOPPED FOR AN ACCIDENT BLOCKING A NARROW PART OF THE ROAD AND TURNED ON THE HAZARD FLASHERS ON MY 2001 GMC SONOMA. AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME (2-3 MIN.) THE HAZARD LIGHTS JUST QUIT FLASHING. I ALSO LOST MY TURN SIGNALS AND BRAKE LIGHTS. I VISITED A DEALER IN SHOW LOW, AZ WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM & GAVE EST. OF $400-$500 BUT COULD NOT REPAIR (PART NOT IN STOCK). I SPENT $50 TO PURCHASE MAG-MOUNTED LIGHTS THAT I WIRED INTO THE HIGH CENTER-MOUNTED LIGHT AT REAR OF THE CAB (THIS LIGHT WORKED, BUT IT IS HIDDEN BY A SHELL OVER BED OF TRUCK) & USED THIS TO DRIVE HOME TO UTAH. I CHECKED INTO RECALLS AND FOUND NONE ONE THE SONOMA BUT DID SEE ONE ISSUED ON JIMMY, BLAZER, TRAILBLAZER, ENVOY, AND BRAVADA (ALL SIMILAR TO SONOMA). THIS SAFETY RECALL DESCRIBED EXACTLY THE FAILURE I EXPERIENCED (NHTSA # 01V364000, GM # 01073A). ON TUE, OCT 3, 2006 I HAD MY VEHICLE REPAIRED AT A DEALER IN AMERICAN FORK, UT, COST: $447.34. I CALLED GM TO SEE IF THEY WOULD COVER IT (REF # 1-435884993). GM DECLINED TO COVER IT BECAUSE THE SONOMA MODEL WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. FOLLOWING UP, I LEARNED THE FOLLOWING: - MY VIN IS IN THE RANGE OF VINS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL AS VEHICLES THAT MAY BE AFFECTED. - MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED AT ONE OF TWO PLANTS INVOLVED IN THIS (LINDEN). - THE RESULTS OF THE "INSPECTION PROCEDURE" SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL MATCH EXACTLY THE SITUATION WITH MY VEHICLE, INCLUDING REPLACING THE "MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH." - PART # 26100837 SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL IS THE PART #USED ON BOTH THE JIMMY AND THE SONOMA (MY VEHICLE). MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SAFETY RECALL BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. MY FAMILY AND I WERE AT RISK AND COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR KILLED. THAT IS WHY I AM PURSUING THIS. THE DEALER WHO DID THE REPAIR DISPOSED OF THE OLD PART. THE GM AGENT I SPOKE WITH AGREED MY VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT GM POLICY PROHIBITED HER FROM APPROVING TO COVER IT. *NM

USUALLY THERE IS A DEPRESSION IN PATH AS WELL, I.E. CURB/DIP AT DRIVEWAY ENTRANCE, POTHOLE, ETC.
